  • ITunes multiple library syncing for music composed on 2nd Mac

    Gentlemen,
    *I know* this question has been asked and answered before more than once. The answer is NO. I fully understand why Apple has this policy.
    Question
    Syncing with two iTunes libraries in two different Macs
    *But this is my case*
    I have a MBP at home with a LaCie 6TB eSATA HDD RAID box with all I need when at home. I am using around 1.7TB of space currently. The box weighs 23 lbs (11kg) so not portable.
    I am happy syncing my music on the MBP when I am at home. So far so good.
    I travel a lot though, every week a different country (marketing work) and happen to be a prolific composer. I have a second mac, a PowerBook G4 with Logic Pro 8 for my composing. When I am at home use a vintage Fender valve amp and a Gibson guitar too... bliss. But let's not get carried away.
    The issue is I do most of my music creation (1 or 2 full songs, lyrics and all) every week so have a few albums in my PowerBook G4 when I am in, say, China.
    *Issue to resolve*
    I need to be able to sync MY OWN CREATIONS into my iPhone when I am away, but the message is always the same "...this will erase all your music and replace it with...".
    I need this to, while I spend 9 hours flying over Siberia, be able to listen to my partially completed musical work on the iPhone and make notes, to improve it etc. next time I get the time in the next hotel with the second Mac plugged to the wall.
    How do mobile music composers working on a mobile music station (my PowerBook G4) who also have at home a normal music collection keep it all in sync?
    _I need an expert to explain to me if there is anything Apple sells as part of Logic or whatever that will let me sync my creations on this second mac without losing my usual music when I am in (let's change country) Russia._
    Appreciate the help,
    best regards
    Signed: a happy marketing professional, prolific musician and frustrated Apple customer

    Thanks,
    had seen that before.
    I am actually looking for something that Apple may offer for (many many many) customers who are music creative people using Apple's software and hardware exclusively (so the real good customers, right?) and work on the move on a G4 or MacBook Air and at home with a bigger box/laptop but cannot use their iPhone for both.
    As a last resort I may try your advice....
    cheers..

  • Spotlight classical music composer

    "I guess no one listens to classical music anymore"
    spotlight on the iphone does not search composer names which makes it useless for classical music and hence for me.
    A internet search for this issue returns no results which leads me to this conclusion.
    I hope this can be changed in the future.
    or am I missing a setting?

    the only setting i can think of is
    Settings -> General -> Search Results -> Music
    if that is on and it's still not finding it suggest it at
    http://apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
    there is a search in the ipod app itself... launch the ipod app and choose Artists then scroll down and a search will appear at the top... im not sure if if it syncs over more than artist, title, and album...

  • What music composing software for Mac?

    Hi
    I am looking for a reasonably low-cost program where I can play around with composing using different tracks etc. I don't have an external synth, so it would just be for playing about on my Mac and setting up tunes to use in midi format etc.
    I tried Easy Beat which had a good user interface but wasn't reliable - suddenly changed all my keys, timings and some sounds - messed up hours of stuff that couldn't be redone...not impressed.
    I'm a proficient musician but an amateur when it comes to things like this...not helped by not being able to play the keyboard well (or having one!) so it's all input note by note!
    Any ideas?!
    Thanks...

    Hi!
    As the last poster noted, Garageband is a great solid program that comes with a lot of good loops and sounds and is very similar in structure to Apple's professional Logic recording program. You can get Garageband 3 with iLife 06 for $79 (or $59 with student discount) or wait for the update of iLife 07 to come out in spring.
    I personally use Logic Pro which is one of the most versatile, flexible, and powerful programs on the market. Logic Express is the same program minus some of the fancy plug ins and workflow enhancements that Pro comes with. You can get it for $299 or $99 as a student from the online store or a local Apple store.
    I highly recommend Logic Express for anyone to buy, epecially for only $99!

  • Music composer?

    I have listened to some compositions made my ZREO which is basically Zelda music "reorchestrated". I think it's amazing. I wondering if there is any software for Linux that could do anything like that. I had a look at Rosegarden, but it didn't have many instruments...TuxGuitar has no instruments for some reason??...Does anyone have other suggestions?

    energyXT2 is great..So is Renoise. And did I mention Reaper? But those are overkill if you just want to experiment..
    Use this script if you want to use VST(i):
    pkgname=lmms
    pkgver=0.3.2
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="The Linux MultiMedia Studio"
    arch=(i686)
    url="http://lmms.sourceforge.net/"
    license=('GPL2')
    depends=('qt' 'sdl_sound' 'wine' 'stk' 'festival' 'jack-audio-connection-kit' 'libsamplerate' 'ladspa')
    source=(http://downloads.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/$pkgname/$pkgname-$pkgver.tar.bz2)
    build() {
    cd $srcdir/$pkgname-$pkgver
    ./configure --prefix=/usr \
    --with-qtdir=/opt/qt \
    --enable-hqsinc
    cd plugins/vst_base
    make -j1 || return 1
    cd ../../
    make || return 1
    make DESTDIR=$pkgdir install
    md5sums=('2485d283d11ab09ea27dd81c2e1bed4e')
    If the speakerbot plugin is crashing the app then add --without-singerbot configure option and remove festival dependency. Random segmentation faults, add --disable-surround Any other question drop by ##lmms in IRC. • Royalty free music that doesn't suck

    I'm not a music composer (and I don't play one on TV) but I am someone who needs music for projects sometimes, mainly video modules for conference openers. The big problem is that, more often than not, my clients aren't willing to pay for an audio engineer/composer to do up a custom track for them. I know, in the big scheme of things, that this is cheaper than me sitting for hours/days sifting through websites with royalty free music but they see the price tag for custom work and freak out.
    So, since Google will allow you to pay to up your placement in their searches, I am fed up with searching sites that suck and thought that, while it doesn't exactly have to do with fine Adobe products (of which I've purchased several [including Audition], spending many thousands of dollars over the years, for any Adobe personnel out there who might read this post and doesn't think it applies to this product), I thought I'd come to this forum and ask you people directly if you know of any sites with RFM that don't suck. You know what I mean, if I have to hear another 60 sec. clip of "atmospheric strings", I may just puke. I did try to find an audio forum to ask this question on but, once again, Google let me down.
    There's simply got to be some music library out there somewhere that's fairly consistently good, or at least the amount of corporate hoaky blech is at a minimum. Or maybe you, as a composer, have your own site with decent stuff that doesn't appear within the first 100 returns of a Google search. Please, let me know! I've got a project I'm working on right now where I'm in a similar bind with a client who thinks they're David Foster without the audio board and doesn't understand that all this costs money, even if it's only $39.95 (and the additional hours of all my searching). They also don't understand that just because they own the CD doesn't mean you're allowed to set pictures to it and call it your own. And if I have to listen to "Simply the Best" used in another video, I may just scream.
    Thanks for any help you can provide!

    I have been using IB Audio for years. Ian is a great composer (and nice guy). It's a yearly membership or by the track. The membership is the best value. For one price you get HUNDREDS of tracks and loops.

  • Music App with Both Chord and Solo Keyboards?

    For a while now, I've been looking for an iPad app that I'd think there'd be dozens of, but I've yet to find one.
    It would be a simple music composing app that lets you play a melody line on a keyboard while simultaneously playing a chord (via button or second keyboard) from a (modifiable) selection of chords. So, one hand composing melody, one finger (on the other hand) playing supporting chords.
    It seems like it'd be a fairly intuitive way to quickly save rough musical ideas, but maybe it's just me.
    Most of the apps I've downloaded let you make, play and/or record a sequence of chords, but there's no way to play a melody at the same time. I'd like the ability to control the playing of the melody and chords...tinker around with the combinations, you know?
    The closest I've found is "SongSynth," but that just plays a push-button chord off the same note you're playing on the (only one-octive) keyboard. What if I want to play a G note in the melody over a chord that isn't rooted in G?
    Anyway, hope this makes sense, and hope this app exists and you can steer me to it!

    I agree!
    It's hard enough to juggle earpieces, expensive hardware and belts (etc) for keys (etc) with software when exercising.
    Particulary since most running log apps can't control Playlists directly.
    Which to launch, then, start first…!
    The simpler and better-integrated such handling is, the better.
    It's tempting to think the changes are part of Apple's bigger plans to 'break up' iTunes, which has become unweildy, given all the functionality it's had to grow to encompass - when compared with a simple audio manager ten years or so ago.

  • Embedding HTML Music-Player in Flash-Website?

    Hello everyone!
    I am a music composer and I'm working on a site to use as a sort of web-presence/portfolio. I'd love to be able to designate one of the "pages" in my animated site to my music, and the best way I can think of would be by using a scrolling pane and various instances of some flash player (I love the quicktime one's simplicity, but it allows you to download the music, and I'd prefer to just have my audience listen and not copy =). I like the google player best after the quicktime one for it's minimalistic look (and if you check out the site-in-progress, you'll see why I favor the sleek, grey players =)
    That, or ditch the scrolling pane and have a static page with a player/playlist of my tracks. Either way, I'd like the listener to be able to select one song at a time. (I also do SFX work, and I'd like to have use a similar format to let the listeners hear the various sound effects.
    Anyways, that's enough out of me... Is there any way to embed an HTML player into a flash movie clip or something? I'm really new to this stuff, you'll see in my little "blog" area under  "profile" on the site that I just opened flash for the first time last weekend.
    If HTML doesnt work in flash, what other options do I have? I'd love to be able to incorporate a streaming player!!
    Thank you in advance!!
    site:
    http://hawkduncan.com/1index.html
    **Please turn your speakers down, the site is still using the templates sound effects and they are kinda "crunchy" sounding for some reason**

    Thanks Ned!!!
    Ok, I'm going to look into the Actionscript 2 music player options out there.
    One question, incase I have a hard time finding what I need, would it be too difficult to have a text box open a new window, and in that window, have all the HTML music player?  I found this site and I'd be OK with something like this:
    http://digitalmedia.oreilly.com/2005/02/23/mp3_embed.html
    My only criteria would be to not have a download file link and that it would stream. Just curious if this would be an option since I've had such terrible luck trying to figure this whole music thing out.
    Thanks again, Ned!!!

    Music Player for Symbian^3 Version 16.10.38.
    Device details Nokia N8 OS Symbian Anna, Software Version 022.014(.356.02=Custom)
    There was a time that I was telling friends that now cell phones are equipped with all the best features when it comes to music also. But that was thing of the past.
    1. Artist & Albums Menu. No Separate selection for each available.
    a. Artist:
    How it is: Artist names are shown with album names.
    Problem: If one had to play all songs of (single) desired artist, he can’t as he doesn’t get “PLAY ALL SONGS” option in that.
    How it should be: Type or scroll to the desired artist name, tab (open) it then you will find out options as “Play all songs” or “Play Album (named separately as XXX, XYZ)”. Previous Media Players had that option.
    b. Albums:
    How it is: As explained in Artist menu.
    Problem: I have albums which are multi artists (especially Indian movie songs which are mostly various artists) so if one had to listen to that complete album, he simply can’t.
    How it should be: As explained above for artists. Previous Media Players had that option.
    2. No type tool available to search in desired fields.
    How it is: The most important thing, the typing tool is unavailable,
    Problem: If one have huge music collection and have to search for song either by artist, album, genre, or by all songs option, the only way is to scroll, while scrolling he is guided by alphabets but still it not powerful tool.
    How it should be: It’s easy to find if one just type the first few alphabets (of first or any word in the field) works as filter, whatever you typed remains on screen the rest hides. Previous Media Players had these options.
    3. Missing Music Composer Menu.
    As these options were available in older phone’s media players like Nokia N95, N73 etc but in new once they are missing, Changing in manifestation is good, adding new and attractive features is great, improvement in ease of use is best but eliminating power features is doing something which is equal to downgrade to Stone Age............ I don't think so people will appreciate.
    4. Custom Equalizer Settings.
    How it is: There few selective factory presets for the equalizer.
    Problem: There are millions of Genres Worldwide and not every part of the world matches the music presets they stored in device and most of time people match the sound on their Audio devices (Car Stereo, Home and other) so they need to edit the equalizer for the best optimum sound quality.
    How it should be: As in older devices had and one can change and save his own setting.
    5. Expecting to add more menus: Suggestions for more menus (like year, mood etc) will be greatest things you will do.
    Who will go and buy a separate device just for music if he has all these features supported by his cell phone specially when the manufacturer claims that it have music player inside.
    People don’t have to stop on highways or stop skating for a while just to select the next song, allow people to go by several options.
    In one simple line to explain, keep all the options of older music player, just change the display styles to new one. Add the suggestions.

    Yep as I said in my post tried that obviously aswell as ...  well, the other things i mentioned in my posting.
    Now does anyone have any ideas?

  • Loop a piece of music in a podcast

    I have a piece of music composed by a friend that I use as an intro bumper and that I play in the background while I talk during a podcast. The piece lasts about 4-5 minutes, and I would like to be able to cause this to loop over and over until I finish talking, usually around 30 minutes. Currently I do this by pasting it in over and over until I get to the part where I finish talking, then I cut it. Is there a way to do this that is easier?

    Put the cursor at the end of the region you want to loop until it turns into a "chasing arrow" symbol. Drag to the right, and the region will loop.

  • Starting a podcast promoting music, but i dont know anything about the law (copyright). Do i need to get permission from all the labels or can I start broadcasting right away?

    Any information regarding this issue is very appreciated!

    Any recording made in the last 50 years, or any piece of music composed by a person who died less than 70 years ago (Europe) or I think 50 years ago (USA) is copyright protected. This would therefore apply to any recording made in the modern era. (Corporations have also been able to extend the copyright of a work beyond what would otherwise be the expiry date - this is known as the 'Mickey Mouse Act' as Disney were among the first - and this may apply to the works of certain popular composers, though only in the USA.)
    In order to include such a recording in your podcast - an action which amounts to publishing it - you must have written permission from the owners of copyrights in both the recording and the music; or possession of a podcasting licence from a recognised authority (I believe these are only available in the USA).
    Without these, to publish such items would be a breach of copyright and could possibly render you liable to a civil suit for recovery of damages - this could also apply to Apple who might be regarded as co-publisher. If Apple spot you doing this they will reject your podcast.
    Many podcasts do exactly this, as complete recordings or 'mixes', and get away with it: this simply means they haven't been noticed or their actions are being ignored. However, the strict answer is that you must get (and very likely have to pay for) individual permissions or a licence.
    If you are in the USA you maybe able to get such a licence: I can't advise on this but Googling is certain to bring up some information. If you do this you will have to find a way to inform Apple that you have such a licence, or they may assume that you are in breach of copyright.
    Sorry to go all 'last-will-and-testament' on you, but you did ask and I'm afraid that that is the strictly accurate answer.

  • IMovie 09 has trouble importing large video files from my JVC HD-40. I am trying to edit files such as these in 09. What should I do? Would buying iMovie 2011 help? I am shooting AVCHD files instead of the other mpeg2 file format.

    Hi,
         I am new into the Apple Community. I have a camcorder known as the JVC GZ-HD40 US and I currently am trying to use iMovie 2009 to edit my movies. With my camcorder, I have the choice to use two different video formats: AVCHD or Mpeg2. All my videos are shot in the AVCHD (HD) file format. This camcorder also has a 120 G Hard Drive built into it. When I plug in the camcorder through USB to my MacPro, the Hard Drive of the camcorder shows up as a icon on the desktop. Many of my video clips are at least thirty minutes in length, inside the camcorder. When I try to import in iMovie my video files, it only imports around ten minutes of the video and skips to the end of the clip. I would greatly prefer to use my MacPro desktop to edit movies instead of my Windows 7 computer which seems to work fine. Is there a solution to this problem? Would the new iMovie 2011 application solve this problem? I also have the Final Cut Express to work with, and also, can't get it to work. What should I try doing?

    Hi all,
    I have the exact same problem. I've just been to Thailand with my girlfriend, and we recorded a lot of stuff with my brand new Sony HD camcorder. And whenever the we ran out of camcorder memory we just emptied everything onto my HP laptop using the supplied Sony software, which produced m2ts files. When we got home, I realized that my Mac Pro/iMovie09 was not able to import this format. What a huge disappointment! Especially considering the fact that I just bought my mac back in March (my first mac ever) only for video editing and music composing (no problems with music composing, however!).
    Well, I needed a solution, so last week I just bought the Voltaic HD converting software (35$), and it works great. No problems. Only thing is that my Mac Pro (quad intel core) had to work 24 hours a day for four straight days/nights in order to finish the converting job - resulting in 434 GB worth of mov-files. This is no problem as such, and the quality is great. BUT it seems rather stupid that this converting has to take place. If I use Sony Vegas on my PC, it works out of the box with my original m2ts-files. And I would really appreciate if Apple would implement a simple import function of m2ts-files in their software - one that would (if necessary) automatically convert the files to mov. Or even better: would work natively with the m2ts-files.
    Best,

  • Problems with EFI Firmware Update to 1.5 for mid 2010 Mac Pro, and sleep issues

    Hello to the community, I have run into an annoying issue.
    I need to update the EFI firmware on my 8 core mid-2010 Mac Pro. I downloaded the EFI update from the apple website from here : http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1321
    But everytime I download it, as I click to install, it gives me the message:
    Alert
    This software is not supported on your system.
    But clearly this is the correct EFI for my computer. I tried burning the Firmware restoration onto a CD from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1320
    But the computer did not respond the way it said it should (with the 3 flashes/beeps etc.) and have the optical drive open for the CD.
    So I'm completely stuck.
    *Also my Mac Pro had issues with sleep, when I put it to sleep, sometimes when I try to bring it back, it restarts itself, and other times, it just turns itself on and the monitor screen remains black, so I have to hit the power button to turn it off then back on again. This only happnens when the computer has been put to sleep for a slightly extended period of time, roughly 20mins +, sometimes longer.  I was trying to solve this problem by first updating the firmware because I think it could be related to that, but I've had this problem with the firmware so I couldn't find out. This is actually the bigger problem for me because it will affect my work. I am currently using an iMac while I fix up this mac pro.
    I'm a music composer so I've upgraded many aspects of my system due to work. I have a 1TB Samsung 840 evo SSD, 2 seagate 2 TB HDD, and 1 WD 1TB HD (the original one in the mac pro), along with 32 GB of RAM. So my only problems are the firmaware and the weird activity when the computer is put to sleep.
    Some help would be greatly appreciated!
