Music disappearing from iTunes media

I was recently editing my music and doing the iTunes Music Match when I noticed many of my songs had the little exclamation mark next it (and most of these were items I paid & downloaded through iTunes on this computer).
I did a search on my computer and couldn't find it. The music is still on my iTouch so I used a software program to copy over all my music on the iTouch. When ever I copy it over to my iTunes media & import it to my Library, it disappears from the iTunes media folder.
Why is this doing this? I am not the only person I know that is missing music from their systems either. I had a whole FaceBook thread going on it yesterday, so its not my computer. Plus the music is still on my computer in a back up folder.

I've just had the same problem - first time iTunes has been unreliable in many years! I bought and downloaded a music album to my iPad on Saturday morning. Listened to it all and then purchased a gift copy of the same album for someone.
But, having synced at least twice since Saturday, only one of the album tracks remains on my iMac and iPad.
First question is how and why this might have happened. Second question is: how do I get back the missing tracks I've paid for?

music has been disappearing. some disappeared altogether, others still show in my library but can't be played because music "can't be located". much of it is still in my iTouch and can be listened to there.
in my "purchased" folder, there are about 70 songs and 4 audio books that "can't be found".
I have a lot more music that I copied from CDs that has disappeared or "can't be found". Some of it is still in my iTouch. these are not new, they go back a ways.
one time when I synced my ipod it went a step further and deleted much of the music from my iTouch. I'm slowly re-installing that. since that time I've had music purchased from the iTunes store go missing from my computer, but (so far) not from my iTouch.
any recommendations as to how to make it stop and where to find things that have disappeared.
    thank you.

  • Music disappeared from itunes

I have done nothing to my computer but I loaded up iTunes this evening to find that all my playlists and more importantly, the music, has been deleted!
Thankfully I managed to find the track on my hard drive and then imported the 'My Music' folder back into iTunes.
However, all my 'play counts' and star ratings have disappeared and so have the playlists.
Is there a way to get these back?

umm...very new to iTunes (and to Mac,) building an iTunes Music folder from CDs mainly to have tracks to use in videomaking.
Started recently to have tracks come up flagged with exclamation point and message box saying "original file cannot be found, do you want to search for it?" I can always locate them, but it's cumbersome.
I haven't read the iTunes directions (don't even really know where they are...) and have probably done all sorts of things to confuse or **** off iTunes - I've moved around folders, backed up my iTunes Music folder by just dragging it onto the external hard drive and renaming it, made little special subfolders, in short, acting like the PC user I have always been...
I know all the music I've imported is still on my Mac hard drive (and duplicated (twice) on an external hard drive,) so I'm not worried about losing it. Today I reinstalled iTunes and the new blank iTunes music folder was working fine. Ripped 2 CDs and their tracks were accessible, no exclamation points. But when I lassoed, highlighted and dragged all the album icons from one of the backup folders into the new iTunes Music folder, they had the same old problem.
Is there a way to import, copy/paste, drag or otherwise transfer the music from my backup folder into the new iTunes Music Folder so that iTunes will understand that they are there? Or, at worst, how should I proceed from now on? What would be the correct way to back up the iTunes Music Folder? (And what's the difference between the Music Folder and the Library, BTW?)
And is there anywhere I can read about this in some systematic way?
sorry for long post, thanks for any help...

  • Music disappearing from Itunes

    Hi,
I have read most posts about disappearing music but none of them seem to have the same problem as i do.
My computer is in good working shape and i use itunes regularly because i host a karaoke night at a near by club. I am constantly adding CDs to my library and i have noticed that some of my songs are missing. They seem to be disappearing in a really organized way which is baffling to me. I'm Losing them by artist, not at random. It seems that everytime i host my monthly event im missing music. I have tried everything from saving my music in two different places on my hard drive to reloading all my music multiple times. I am getting frustrated with Apple at this point...
When i backed it up on the hard drive it wiped it in both places...
    What can i do?
    Help?!?!

I'm having this exact same problem. I'm not deleting music, but it goes missing. It's not in the library and no longer on my computer. I've looked, I've run searches in iTunes and Windows, and it's gone.
My computer is virus and spyware free and I am the only user with access to it.
It was deleting whole albums alphabetically by artist. Several artists starting with A went missing. Then B. Then C. Now songs randomly go missing. Sometimes albums. Upgrading/reinstalling iTunes doesn't solve the problem. I keep everything on my computer up-to-date because I work from home and rely on my computer a fair amount.
I'm getting really frustrated with this problem, and I'm really hoping to find a solution before I give iTunes the boot. No other players appeal to my inner-organizer as well as iTunes does.
    Can anyone help?

  • Why are TV Shows and Music Disappearing from iTunes 10.6.3?

It started with my season pass for Walking Dead. I open iTunes mid-week last week, and they all showed a missing icon. Odd, but I'd watched them all, so I didn't really panic or even invesitgate. A couple days later, an entire album goes missing. Today, I have probably 20+ showing missing without any pattern as to why those files are missing. Some are part of complete albums, others are not. Some are .mp3 some are .aac files. I can guarantee you I did not delete them in iTunes, on my phone (whole library sync'd minus music videos) or on my iPad (limited sync).
    iTunes 10.6.3
    iTunes Match On

Unfortunately your 4S  phone could have worked with an older iTunes that works with your old system version but Apple makes it so a new phone requires the version of iTunes current at the time of purchase.  You do not tell us what model computer you have. Go to the apple in the upper left corner, then About This Mac, then More.  If it says Intel in the processor information you can upgrade your system to 10.6.3 by purchasing a Snow Leopard DVD from Apple online ($20), then free update to 10.6.8 to run the newest iTunes.  If you have a PPC Mac (older than about 6 years) you can only run the newest iTunes by buying a newer computer.

  • Music completely disappeared from itunes and computer

I got on my iTunes today and my music all said that the location could not be found. I don't know how or why, for I haven't changed anything or moved my music folder around. Out of over 2000 songs, only 800 remain. But all my folders are still there. All the artist folders in my iTunes folder are all there...but I have no idea where the music went. I did a search and the songs didn't come up. WHY did my music disappear from iTunes and WHY only some of them?! I'd love to say I have them saved on my iPod but my iPod is only 4 gigs and I had over 12 gigs of music so obviously I can't recover all of them. Someone help me find my music!!!

Nobody likes replying to posts like this - if you've searched all your hard drives and the music files are gone, then they're gone.
I assume you looked in the Recycle Bin and did a Win Explorer search instead of just looking in the known folders?
Who knows why this happened! Disasters like this usually convince folks to make regular backups.

  • HT1451 Music has completely disappeared from ITunes library! Please Help!!

Music has completely disappeared from ITunes library! Please Help!!
Hours and Hours of renaming, adding cover photos and so on have been for nothing. Itunes cannot find the files since they're not in the library at all!
I still have the music on my computer but don't want to add it as it is, as I have spent a lot of time "fixing" it! PLEASE HELP!

Did you use spotlight to search? (I'm assuming you have a Mac as given above despite this thread being in the Windows forum). How long have you used iTunes on this computer? Is there a backup to your library, perhaps an only copy of it on a machine you've "retired". Is the media present in the media folder? (Yes, you've answered that earlier.) If so then the media files should have absorbed all the tag changes that you made and reimporting the media into a new library might not be a complete disaster, though playlists, playcounts, ratings etc. would be irretrievably lost.

  • How do you stop synched iTunes music disappearing from my iPhone 5?

I have about 35G of music on my iTunes on my iMac, a good % of it having been purchased on ITunes.  The music sync setting for my iPhone 5 is automatic / everything.
For the past couple of months, I've been noticing music disappearing from my iPhone when it's offline (eg on the plane, when I listen to my music on my iPhone the most).  Such music would come back as "in the cloud" when I regain wifi / data access.  I would then download them onto my iPhone again.  And then they would disappear again!  How can I stop such annoying behavior?  Does switching music sync to manual help?  Thank you.

    Hello claire267
In the Messages app, in the drop down menu go to Messages > Preferences. Once there click the Accounts tab and then remove the iMessage account and that will stop all messages associate with your phone number from showing up on your computer.

  • Music disappearing from playlists after sync with itunes?

So I have a bunch of songs that I ripped from CDs or got the MP3 files from friends. I add some of them to a playlist, that's fine. But when I purchase a few songs from iTunes on my phone and add them to the playlist, they appear there temporarily. The problem happens when I sync my phone with iTunes, then all of my purchased music disappears from the playlist. It's still on my phone, but not in the playlist. Why does it do this, and how do I fix it? This is really discouraging me from using iTunes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

my computer broke down and now i bought a new  Mac,  how can i get my music back from iTunes??

Unless you subscribe to iTunes Match , Apple does not keep a backup of your iTunes library.  Even then it is not the library as it exists on your computer, but some version of the media, and only media files, not playlists.  Even then not all media are definitely available since anything removed from the iTunes Store since you purchased it is not available for re-download.

In your case it sounds like you will have to obtain non iTunes purchases from their original source or a backup you may have made at some time in the past.

  • IPod Touch stops syncing and disappears from iTunes

I have a problem with an iPod Touch 8GB: when connecting it to a MacBook, it starts syncing and transferring songs, but after a while it just stops syncing and disappears from iTunes. The iPod will still show "sync in progress", and it will still show up in the System Profiler, but not in iTunes.
If I cancel the sync from the iPod, the song library will be inaccessible ("Cancelling sync" or whatever it says) until I unplug the USB cable. If I keep trying (by unplugging and re-plugging it in), it will eventually finish syncing all songs, but it takes ages that way.
I have tried 2 different USB cables and upgraded to firmware 1.1.5 (it was 1.1.4 before). Any ideas?

I have upgraded to 2.0.1 and the latest itunes as of today and still have the exact same issue. I have even tried the following with no luck :
    1. Restart the ipod after this occurs and then sync again.
    2. Deleted my entire list of Music and Videos from itunes and reloaded them back.
    3. Formatted and Reinstalled Windows and tried syncing again.
Thanks to this issue, i dont even have a single song or Video on my ipod....
    Can someone please Help.

  • 4.3 upgrade on 3GS, Music disappears from phone once you download a Podcast

Anyone having the same problem? Since I've upgraded to 4.3, if I download a podcast on my phone via wifi, all my music disappears and so do my podcasts. They are still on the phone but it says "there is no music, download from iTunes"
Music is easily restored if I connect the phone with my mac and play a song from my phone through iTunes.
Anyone know how to "cure" this?

The basics from the manual are reset, restart, restore.
Have you tried any of these?

Solved! Music was in Itunes folder but not in Media folder within that. It doesn't seem like a very user friendly system so far!

Sorry, kcrail, this is a Community Forum.  All support is done here.  (BTW, posting your phone number in a Public Forum is somewhat akin to writing it on the wall of the bus station.  Never a good idea!)
Since you are running Windows 2000, you most likely have a pretty old version of Windows Media Player.  Easiest thing for you to do would be to puchase a USB Card Reader that supports Micro SD cards, and simply drag and drop your music to the /AUDIO folder on the card.  Put the card back into your phone and you're done!

Media is not burned to iDevices.  Burning an iDevice would destroy it.
Why will iTunes not allow you to sync media to the iDevice?  What happens when trying to sync media to an iDevice?

    Changed password to what?
    Pull up what account?
What does this have to do with iTunes?
One does not pull up an account to access their media, they simply launch iTunes.
Changing a password has nothing to do with accessing the media on the computer when one launches iTunes.
What is the actual issue that is occurring?

iTunes has nothing to do with putting media on a non-Apple device.
