Music does not play in iTunes

When I play a song in iTunes or in the iTunes Store, the Play triangle symbol turns into the two line Pause symbol, but the time does not tick up (stays at 0:00, I can click on the timeline and then it'll just stay on that time) and nothing plays.
I've had iTunes for a long time and it's always worked before. I re-downloaded it and did 'repair' but it didn't fix the problem.

A long shot, but try turning off the Compatibility Mode; it may have been off and something else has turned it on:
iTunes for Windows: How to turn off Compatibility Mode
If that doesn't help, there are some additional suggestions in the document linked at the bottom of that page.
Hope this helps.

• ITunes 7.0 Update - now music does not play

After updating to the latest iTunes, music does not play. I see old posts about this with versions 5 and 6, but now I have it with 7. I've tried uninstalling both QT and iTunes and reinstalling - same problem exists. When a music file is selected for play, the scrolling diamond never advances. I've dragged the diamond to the middle of the file; it still just stays stuck. I've tried deauthorizing and reauthorizing: same problem remains. I;ve checked that the exe is not set for "mixed-mode" (an Apple article), but it isn't in that mode. All files are findable through iTunes and they will download to the iPod through iTunes. Windows XP Pro is completely up-to-date through Microsoft Update (it already was before the upgrade - on auto-update - but I double checked to be sure). An audio CD has the same behavior: the tracks are read and displayed, but they will not play. The CD spins up for about a minute and then stops. The same CD plays fine in Windows Media Player.
Does anyone have a clue on this one? I see these old articles about the same problem in previous versions, but there are no fixes or suggestions, other than what I've already tried above.
Any help greatly appreciated.

I decided to revert to iTunes 6.0.5, which I found on the Apple site. Uninstalled 7.0.0 and installed 6.0.5. It wouldn't start, complaining that itunes library.itl was created by a newer version of iTunes - great! Well, it turns out there is a backup of the old library file in the iTunes directory. I replaced the one created by 7.0.0 with that older file. The music is again playing!!! We're back to where we were before the 7.0.0 update, so that's some relief, but we're currently at a deadend on the update cycle. Not sure where to go from here, except nowhere.

• 11.0.5.5 64-bit on Win 8: music does not play after update

Recently prompted to update itunes software to 11.0.5.5 64-bit (Win 8). Did so and now music does not play. Music library is correct but when I select a song and then push the "play" triangle itunes says it is playing but tracker does not move off of "0:00". Any ideas?

The issue is probably not the machine you purchased the music on. The issue is very likely the Apple ID you used to purchase the music.
It sounds like the music being skipped on your iPhone 5 was purchased with some Apple ID that is not currently authorized in the iTunes (on your computer) that you sync to. So you should go to that computer, open iTunes, do Store > Authorize This Computer from iTunes' menu, enter that Apple ID and password, then sync your iPhone 5 to that iTunes.

• Music will not play in iTunes 10.5

Music does not play in my iTunes. iTunes freezes when I try to play any song or video clip. I have updated to iTunes 10.5.

My case was escalated to Apple Engineers or the development team. Apple Support was told that 10.5 now requires 512mb minimum memory. My computer has only 384mb of ram. I was advised to upgrade my Pentium III with its maximum memory of 384mb, and not to upgrade my iPhone 3GS to 5.0 because it's to risky of failing the upgrade. I took the risk and upgraded to 5.0. My iPhone successfully upgraded with no problems. Then over wifi updated to 5.0.1 update successfully. I waited for iTunes 10.5.1 to release (11/18/2011) then installed the 10.5.1 software update. Problem solved! Glad I waited for 10.5.1. An iTunes update has resolved similar problems before. Unfortunately the Apple iTunes developers do not always tell support all the bugs or fixes. All songs in my music library play as expected! Thank me for being such a patient, loyal and devoted iTunes user. What would I have done with my 70GB library, 70% imported, 30% purchase from iTunes!

• Music does not appear in iTunes after consolidation and xfer to E drive

I followed the instructions listed on the web site for xfer of the music to an external hard drive. After I did the consolidate portion, the music did not show/appear in the e drive folder created for the music. The music does not show in iTunes now. I have not deleted anything since I can't see music in the e drive folder.
I am currently copying the music from the older folder to the newer folder to see if this helps.
Where does the consolidated music go?
Can it be shown in iTunes at all now that it has been consolidated?
Will pod sync now since music does not appear in iTunes?
Any help or information would really be appreciated.
Thanks!

Rather than move individual files you might want to move the whole collection:
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

• When I open Power Point files in Keynote the music does not play. How can I solve this?

When I open Power Point files in Keynote the music does not play. How can I rectify this?

That issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

Hi deb253,
If you are having sound issues with your new iPod Nano, you may find the following article helpful (it is aimed at the 6th Gen, but the steps should be similar for the 7th):

• The music I buy in the Iphone does not play in itunes

When I buy music on my Iphone 4 and then sync with Itunes on my PC, the songs appear in the list but does not play. and then some songs on my Iphone 4 does not play properly or play other song. what is wrong?

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
Windows users see tip at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18879381
2011 Transferring your iTunes library - http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/ - An article with good background information, particularly if you are not sure your media files are all grouped for quick solution above. Unfortunately it uses the single term "transferring library" for two very different moves; relocating just your media (not recommended unless you really need this configuration) and relocating media+database (really your whole "library"). Make sure you understand the difference before electing to move only media.
If you put it in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there. (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

• My music is not playing on iTunes

Hello, I was wondering if anyone else is having the same problem. When I open up iTunes and go to my Library, it shows all my music, but when I try to play a song (any song) it does not play. This is only happening on my iMac... I am able to play all my music on my iPad as well as iPod. I've only recently gotten my iMac, and do believe that the music was working at some point, but I can't remember. If someone could help, that'd be wesome! Thanks

lol Limnos, No plane ticket needed. I have literally been trying to get the music to play for like 2 months and nothing worked. I finally decided to ask the question on here and literally 2 minutes after I submitted the question, IT STARTED WORKING! I didn't change any settings whatsoever, so I have no idea. lol Thanks for trying to help so quickly! I guess this thread can be deleted now. haha

• Music will not play from iTunes during a slideshow that is run from flickr. ATV says turn on homesharing...it already is on! HELP!!!!

Music will not play during a slideshow launched from Flickr. After choosing music and starting slideshow, the screen says "loading" and it never stops. Under the computers section it says, turn on home sharing in iTunes on the computer with the music library. It is on but apple tv wont recognize it. I've signed out and signed back in over and over and home sharing is on but music wont play. Is this a bug with flickr? Music will play when i launch a slideshow from the iPad but it doesnt have as many cool options for slideshows as flickr does. I want the flickr slideshow to play with music!!! Grrrrrrrr!!!!! Can anyone help???

ok, major miracle. it is now working. here is how i fixed it, and it was a stroke of luck to even find this. opened iTunes, went to edit, then to preferences. box pops up, went to the sharing icon and clicked share my local library on my local network. then scrolled down and checked all the boxes that were applicable. for the heck of it i went through all the other headings to see what else might be hiding from me. i never thought this would do anything but went to ATV, selected flickr, chose some music and wa-la....its playing. also, under the computers heading, it still does not show my iTunes library but clearly its there someplace. oh well, it works...i'm happy! your reply inspired me to keep working so thank you for that!

• Sample music does not play past 10 seconds?

I am hoping someone can please help.
When I am trying to listen to/sample music on the iTunes store, the sample song will not play past 10 seconds or a little more sometimes. Some sample tracks play just fine all the way through the entire sample time allotted (1 min. 20 sec.) It does not matter if I am logged into my iTunes account or not. It does not matter if I am using my desktop or my laptop (they are not linked on a network). I have taken both devices to Geek Squad to be checked; both are fine.
Have tried to resolve the issue with the help/support of iTunes professionals and they are not able to help. They gave me a telephone number to help for further assistance however, I do not wish to pay $49.99 for help. I never had any issues prior to about 3 months ago maybe..?? Cannot recall downloading any new software, etc.
Sometimes if I purchase a song that does not play the full sample (1 min. 20 sec.) the purchased song will not play in full either. I can email iTunes and they will re- download my purchase which plays properly after I have to download it again. It's not a HUGE deal, but it's EXTREMELY annoying.
No one can seem to solve this stupid mystery. Pleeeeaaaassseeee, someone save me. Many thanks.

What're you using to playback the MP3s? Is this Creative Mediasource? If so does it playback with WinAmp, Foober 2k or some other program?
Some versions of Creative Playcentre had a preview option which played the first so many seconds of an MP3. However you have an Audigy 2 ZS which is unlikely to have Playcentre.

• Theme Music Does Not Play

I have created a slideshow using one of the themes. I have added music to the slideshow using music from my iTunes. The iTunes library is on my Macbook drive but the music files are stored on an external drive. If I close iPhoto and reopen it, the slideshow will play but the music will not play. If I re-add the same song from iTunes, it will not play it. It will play any other song but not the one that was the original. If I copy the song file from the external drive to the main drive and add it to the slideshow it will play the song. It will also play the song if I close iPhoto and reopen it and try to play it. It seems like when I close iPhoto is loses the path to the music file but it won't let me re-establish it. Any thoughts on how to solve this problem?
ITunes 8.2.1
IPhoto 09 8.0.4

Do you haveownership set to be ignored on the external HD? Also you might find that file and check it's ownership and permissions.

• My purchased music does not show in iTunes on my new mac

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro. The iTunes library was transferred over by the Apple store employees, but my purchased music does not show. How can I get my purchased music to show in iTunes? (I previously had a Windows PC). Thank you!

The 'Purchased' music is just a special Playlist. You can create your own and drag the links into the 'Purchased' PL.
Using the command CMD-J you can add the Purchase date to your list view - sort by date - drag the tunes to the 'Purchased' PL.

• After upgrading my iPhone to new 5.1 iOS, and reloading all of my files back in , my music appears to be in the phone, but when I press play, the music does not play, even though the pause button is now lit.

After 6 hrs. Of upgrading to 5.1 iOS , and reloading all data my music will not play. The music was reloaded from iCloud, and shows up in library, but will not play.

Basics from the manual are restrt, reset, restore.
Have you tried each of these?
