Music files from flash drive to new itunes

ive been slowly transfering music from my old PC to a music library on my MBP.  the weird thing is that on a fair number of folders, when they transfer, some songs seem to get left behind and not copied.  i'll have an album with 11 tracks, and move it as usual to the flash drive, then when its gets loaded onto the mac three or four of them are gone.  i must be really behind the times, because i cant fathom the file allocations that itunes uses.  ill load the batman begins soundtrack folder into the music folder, and it will split it into to two separate files - one with the original folder title and another with the artist listed and consolidiating them manually doesnt work.  it just resplits the **** thing - am i still to PC-if-fied?

... unless you have a backup copy of your *iTunes library file*. do you use time machine or any other means of backing up ?
What is the easiest way to link the now newly installed itunes to these external files?
if the answer to above question is no, you will have to start from scratch, i.e. no playcounts, ratings, playlists, etc. from your old library will be there.
assuming you have *copy files to ... when adding to library* checked in preferences > advanced, option-drag the folder containing your media files into an open iTunes window. iTunes will index the path to the location of the original files, but won't copy them physically.
btw, pointing *iTunes media folder location* to another spot will only tell iTunes where to put newly added content, not where the current content is.

How do I move music files from the startup disc to iTunes in the other internal hard disk os 10.5.8?
The music I want to move was in iTunes but is now just files. I had to reinstall a new iTunes and lost all my old music.
    Thank you!

That article is about using your iPod as an external hard drive, to move files from one computer to another computer.  It is not related to your question.
You can't use iTunes to move song files from iPod to computer, except for songs you purchased from the iTunes Store (and you can also re-download purchases).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can move song files from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your current computer, add them to that computer's iTunes library by dragging the files (or folder containing the files) to the iTunes window.  After confirming everything is there (and fixing the data issue you mentioned) you can sync the iPod.  You may want to do a Restore on the iPod, if it might have a data corruption issue, which will erase the iPod's hard drive, re-install the latest software, and set it to defautl settings.

  • Transfer iTunes files from external drive onto new iMac

I had all of my iTunes files on an external hard drive with an old eMac. I want to transfer the files to my brand-new iMac.
It's easy to copy the iTunes Library folder from the external drive onto the iMac hard drive, and change the preferences so that new songs are stored onto the iMac, but it doesn't change the settings for iTunes. Then, if I "Add to Library" I get two copies of everything: the file that's on the external drive PLUS the file that's on the new iMac. If I delete all of the "old" duplicates, it will mess up my playlists.
Isn't there an easy way to point iTunes to the new Library on the iMac and have it change the location setting for all of the songs?

okay, let me rephrase my question:
when you moved your files from the old Mac to the external, did you
    (a) drag the entire iTunes folder from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music to the external
    or
    (b) use the +consolidate files+ command to move the files to the external
if (a), connect the external to the new Mac and launch iTunes while pressing option on your keyboard. when prompted, click on +choose library+ and select the iTunes folder on the external.
if (b), copy the iTunes folder from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the old Mac to <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the new one, overwriting the iTunes folder in place there. connect the external to your new Mac and fire up iTunes normally.
if you want to move the media files from the external to the internal disk of your new Mac, go iTunes > preferences > advanced and point +iTunes media folder location+ to the iTunes folder in <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music. also on the advanced tab, make sure there is a tick in the boxes next to +keep iTunes media folder organized+ and +copy files to ... when adding to library+.
then file > library > organize library > consolidate files. this will copy all your media files to the location you specified earlier in the advanced tab. when done, you can (if you want) erase the external and use it for other purposes. or keep the files there and use the external as your backup.

  • Undelete music files from external drive?

    Quick version:
External drive got reformatted, but music files maybe still there. Know a good, and reasonably priced, software with best chance for recovery? Cannot affort to send drive to pros to recover. Thx!
    Longer version:
I have an external/USB hard drive which had a lot of music for my iTunes library. Unfortunately a computer guru, working on my system, reformatted that drive. Using a free trial of some undelete software it appears the song files may still be there. But reviews of most software online are very mixed as to recovering music, versus other, files. Sounds like many of them cannot recover music files and may even corrupt them more in the process.
Does anyone know from experience a good and reasonably priced, or free wouldn't be bad, software I could use to recover these music files? I understand the files may be trashed, but I'm looking for my best shot at recovering them and cannot afford to buy several software apps trying to undelete these, or to send the drive off to a drive recovery service. Thanks in advance!!

thx for your speedy reply. Let me ask, was the recovery for general files or for music files? What I read was that many of the recovery programs do good jobs on basic files, like Word and Excel, but that music files are much harder to recover and software might be very poor at recovering them.

  • Transfer music files from internal drive to external drive

Prior to purchasing a new computer, I transferred the music files and library.xml file from my old PC to an external drive. Now I want to transfer the music to my new PC.
The issue I have is that the Library.xml file points to the music on the F: drive and I want to put the music on my D: drive. I tried to do a find/replace within the .xml file, but the file is so large (20MB) that it takes forever to open and do a find/replace.
Is there an easier way to transfer my music files to my new PC and use my Library.xml? If so, how? I have spent countless hours organizing my Library so I don't want to start all over.
    Help! Thanks.

Well, a really easy way to do it would be to simply force windows to use a different letter for your drives. Where you currently have your music on D:, you could tell Windows to start calling that drive F:. Of course, this could cause problems if anything like the registry, programs, or shortcuts refer D:. To make this change, right-click "My Computer" and choose Manage. You can do this right in the start menu of Windows XP. A new window will open. Select Disk Managment on the left and all your drives should show up on the right. Right-click the drive you want to change the letter of and choose "Change Drive Letter and Paths". I can't verify if these options exist on XP Home, but it works on my XP Pro.
I'm running into a similar but more complicated problem, which I will post somewhere if I can't find a solution. I have my library split between two drives and now I want them all on one new drive I bought. Ick!

  • How do I move music files from G4 to my new macbook?

I would like to move my music library from my G4 to my new macbook. the macbook doesn't have a firewire port. It has an enternet and usb ports. what is the simplest way to do this.

The easiest way would be to turn on file sharing and connect both computers to each other using an Ethernet cord, and transfer the files over the mini-network that would result. This would actually be faster than Firewire.

  • Linking music files from Windows Media Player to Itunes

How do you link music between WMP (this is where I download my music) and ITunes without having to copy all the files so I don't need to use up hard drive space?

iTunes will not accept Window Media player tracks that are protected. If you imported them off your own CDs, did you check the option to apply protection to them? If so, your only choice is to re-rip those CDs.

  • How can I recover files from flash drive?

I've apparently lost a bunch of '.pages' files on a 16GB Lexar flash drive that were present yesterday.  The '.pages' files were contained in a sub-folder.  The main folder is still there and apparently okay.  I am at a total lose as to where the files (and their sub-folder) have gone to.  Any suggestions on a program or procedure to try to see if they're still there and recoverable?  Any guidance will be GREATLY appreciated!  Thanks!
    I have a MAC Mini (Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.6.8), 2.4 GHz Intel Core2Duo 8GB mem.
If I've selected the wrong community to post this question to, please help me find the right one.  Thanks, again!

    Peter,
Thanks for suggesting Disk Utility.  I didn't know it existed, but found it and ran it.  I checked 'Verify Disk' and it "Found 335234 orphaned clusters, 25174 files, 6428792 KiB free (803599 clusters)"  And, then responded (in Red) "Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk."
After I checked "Repair Disk" it responded: "Volume repair complete. Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required."
After then checking the flash drive the 'lost' folder and files are still not present.
I've been looking on the WEB for 'recovery programs' for MAC.  I'd just as soon find a 'free' application, but would consider purchasing a program if it would work.  What do you know about these 'recovery programs':
        http://www.wondershare.net/ad/data-recovery-mac.html?gclid=CKuo48CPn8ICFY_m7Aodx jYABQ
        http://help.cleverfiles.com/usb-flash-drive-recovery/

        http://www.easeus.com/mac/mac-data-recovery-resource/recover-mac-usb-drive.htm
Have you had any experience using any of them?  There are many more out there including ones that will 'scan' your flash drive ('free') and tell you what files it can recover, then you have to purchase the full program (~$99) to actually recover them.  Two of these programs are listed below:
        http://www.macintosh-data-recovery.com/?gclid=CPzujPKOn8ICFQNk7AodqFoAVw
        http://www3.softcity.com/mac-data-recovery/?tracking=SC_EN_PP_GO_SE_MDR&keyword= recover%20lost%20files%20on%20mac&gclid=CN7ArqaPn8ICFe_m7AodtFUAHg
I had even converted 7 of the original '.pages' files to '.pdf' files to eMail some friends in the universal '.pdf' format on Nov. 28th.  The '.pdf' files were saved back to the original folder on the flash drive.  They, also, cannot be found anywhere!!??
I can re-build the files (~150-200 photo pages from vacation trip back in May), but there were many comments and some special research (maps, etc.) I had included that I would probably not be able to duplicate exactly.  Luckily the '.jpg' photos from our trip are still present on the flash drive and also on the camera's memory stick - THANK GOODNESS!  However, now I am hoping that one of the recovery programs listed above might solve my problem.
Again, thanks for your help, but I'm not THERE yet!

  • Saving and Opening files from Flash Drive Mac to Windows Computer

    Hi!
I recently purchased a generic Flash drive (2gb). I am having problems saving things on it. Sometimes when i drag a file to the flash drive icon it doesn't load properly or transfers well. I try opening it and it says: "FILE ERROR
Couldn't open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn't recognize." Some documents do open well. I also tried opening files on a windows computer and it says it has to be formated. I format it and of course everything deletes.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
    Thanks

    OK. I did.
But here is the problem, it still doesn't save certain file on the flash drive. Most of the files are either jpg.,cwk.,pdf., or mov.
The mov. won't even play. It works fine when i save files from a windows computer, but not when i save from my mac.
I really have no idea why its doing this. I am aware that certain file can't be opened from a mac to a window, but i just don't know why, when i place a file into the flash drive icon and try to re-open it, it says the error message again (On my mac).
    Thanks.

  • How do I transfer my music files from Sony Sonic Stage to iTunes?

When iTunes prompts me to transfer my music files into iTunes the files in Sonic Stage are not transfered and I cannot find a way to transfer them over.
    Dell Inspiron 1150   Windows XP

I tried to transfer songs from Sonic Stage but the formats simply aren't compatible. I ended up burning all of the songs I'd purchased with Sonic Stage onto cd's and importing them in to iTunes. Pain in the butt and time consuming but at least I didn't lose my music.
Don't trash your Sonic Stage though! I moved my songs to iTunes and now am unable to burn with it. I'm so glad I didn't wipe out everything from Sonic Stage since I've reverted back to using it when I have to burn or if I want to do a compilation cd. Can't hurt to cover your bases.

  • Error copying files from flash drive

I'm not entirely sure this is a Windows compatibility problem, but it seems plausible. We have an external USB drive that is used to carry files back and forth between home, where we have a MacBook, and my husband's job, where he has a Windows machine. He has had a problem on several occasions copying files between the external drive and the hard drive. If he copies an entire folder, the copy will sometimes throw an error and then abort the copy process. This then results in anything that previously existed in the target folder and didn't get copied being completely wiped out (instead of them just being left there).
I was able to replicate this behavior for the local copy of the files that are now on our hard drive, just trying to copy to another folder on the hard drive. The error message I saw was a "File in Use" error on a file that was definitely not open in any application, and then the aborted copy process (and the complete erasure of any files that previously were there). It was intermittent: I had a successful copy-and-paste of the folder once, and another that displayed the error behavior.
    Other info:
I can copy using "cp -r" on the command line, this only happens with the Finder.
The file that I saw the "File in Use" error on has an extended attribute set (I noticed this due to the "@" sign at the end of the permissions). When I look at it, it is a com.apple.FinderInfo attribute but I don't know what the values/fields mean.
The files all show the username & group name from the Windows system my husband uses at work (we haven't set any groups at home -- the files show "staff" as the group so I presume this is from the Windows system).
Some of the files were originally created on the Windows machine, others originally on the Mac machine.
The external hard drive is formatted as MS-DOS (FAT32).
I'm thinking there is some permissions issue between the Mac attributes and the Windows attributes that is causing the copy to fail (ungracefully) but that's a theory and I don't know how to fix it. Thanks for the help.

I never did figure out why the files wouldn't copy over. Eventually, I deleted them and reformatted the drive. I don't know if that "fixed" anything, and I have not tried to copy such large files from the Mac to drive or vice-versa, but the drive seems to be fine. So, the problem and the solution remain a mystery!

  • Transfer itunes music from flash drive to new pc

I have a new PC, HP Envy.   I had previously copied my Music, etc. onto ex-hard-drive from my old PC but do not know how to get this music onto my new PC.   I have an I-Pod which I attach to my computer on occasions to update it.  I have just downloaded I-Tunes 11.0.5.5 but dont know where to go from here.   I also thought that I-Tunes held backups of ones music, is this so?

Drag it to the internal drive and then into the open iTunes application window. If the external drive contains an entire iTunes library, you can also launch iTunes with the Shift key held down and point it there.

  • Uploaded entire music library from external hard driveto new iTunes account.  Only purchased music will play.  When I try to play other files, iTunes says it can't be used because original file can't be located and an exclamation point appears before song

    Please help

You may be getting that error message if the setting 'Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library' is not turned on (in Preferences>Advanced>General).
To sort all your songs out in one batch, my suggestion would be to remove all your songs from your iTunes library and re-import them all. However, as someone who also has a 5,000-song collection, I wouldn't want any of your songs to be deleted, so either do a backup or write-protect your iTunes music folder.
