Music files getting renamed (why?), iTunes loses them

This has happened once every month or two since I started using iTunes on my laptop. I haven't been able to figure out what triggers it, but every now and then my music files get renamed. Not all of them, but, for example, this time every song on 24 albums out of about 100. It's always entire albums. When it has happened, I double-click on the song, I get the message saying the "original file could not be found", then I re-find it and it starts playing. When it starts playing, iTunes will usually rename it and/or move it to another folder. Sometimes the album ends up in the "unknown artists" folder, or in the "compilations" folder, but once I track it down (through iTunes "do you want to find it") it gets moved back where it belongs.
It was only this last time that I noticed that these lost files were not only getting moved, but they were getting renamed as well. When everything's working fine, my music has been moved and named like has been renamed by iTunes and looks like "C:\My Music\The Dresden Dolls\The Dresden Dolls\03 Missed Me.mp3". Some process in iTunes or in Windows is renaming only certain albums to look like "C:\My Music\Stephen Lynch\A Little Bit Special\10-Gerbil-Stephen Lynch-A Little Bit Special.mp3".
When the files get renamed like this, iTunes can't find them anymore until I go in and fix things, file by file. This takes forever. If not for the fact that I need to preserve my playlists and my play count numbers, I would just blast the whole library and reimport the folder, but I can't do that.
So, any one have any ideas why this happens, how to keep it from happening, and a way to fix things while preserving my metadata without having to double-click on a few hundred songs?
  Windows XP Pro

Actually, I found a good solution based on another question. If I re-import the folder, it finds all of those misnamed files and adds them to the library. Then I tell iTunes to keep my music folder organized, and it fixes all the file names and folders. Then after I make sure the original entries work again, I can sort the list by date added, and delete the new entries.
But I still have no idea why those albums are getting renamed. It's not just the most recent ones or the oldest ones, it's not ones that haven't been played, it's just random-seeming.

  • Why do music files get corrupted in iTunes?

Why do music files get corrupted in iTunes? All kinds of files;( mp3, mp4, aac, etc., either purchased from iTunes, Store, downloaded from online, or uploaded from an audio disc) SUDDENLY GET CORRUPTED AND STOP PLAYING! Even if I delete the file from my iTunes and then re-open it from the source, it appears to be corrupted. My system has been thoroughly scanned and does not have and never has hAd, a virus. Music files should not have a shelf life. They're just non-living pieces of information. So why should they suddenly go bad? It is unacceptable that over the past year I have had to delete many files from my iTunes library and find some other source for the same song. It has been an exhausting headache and an exasperating waste of my time.

this is not necessarily the case, I had an itunes library go bad on me. I noticed the corrupt files on my ipod, they were either skipping real bad or sounded like there was some crazy modulation filter applie. Anyways, i went to iTunes and the files were bad there, so I played them in WMP, also bad, so obviously it was a file issue, BUT, what was the source of the corruption.......also, this happened ONLY to mp3s, no other audio file.......so i had backups and copied the bad files from a dvd and played them in WMP, files were good, then i import them to iTunes, and the files are crap again, so I tried just adding to library, still bad. So the file was fine before, once iTunes touched it, the file went bad, I **** you not. So I uninstalled iTunes from my PC, downloaded the newest version and reinstalled, same problems, so i continued trying with a different version, and making sure all registry entries were cleared before installing etc. NOTHING, so in the end i had to start using Winamp and all those files have not since caused me problems. So NO, it does not have to be hard drive issues, assess your own situation and you should be able to figure out if it is your HDD. My problem seemed to be iTunes library corrupting my metadata. However, I could never get it to work. I am glad to say I have since abandoned my PC and bought a new iMac on which i once again happily running iTunes with all the same audio files as before

  • New iTunes Install.  Must I Now Import Music Files?  Or Does iTunes Include Them Automatically?

I have just installed iTunes on my new computer.  All of my iTunes music files are on my hard disk.  Do I have to take some kind of affirmative action to "connect up" my music files to iTunes?  I don't seem to be able to access any of my music files with iTunes.  Do I have to import all of my music files into my iTunes library before I can listen to the music?  I know this sounds like a dumb question, and I suspect the answer is, "Of course, stupid," but I want some confirmation of what I should do at this point before going ahead.  Anyone?

I previously had my entire iTunes library on another computer, along with (of course) iTunes as well.  I could happily listen to all the music I wanted with a huge library to select from.  All was well.  Then my computer died.  Fortunately, I had everything backed up - in Carbonite, actually.  I got a new computer last week and recovered all of my data files (including my iTunes music files), which are now on the hard drive of my new computer.
Then I downloaded iTunes onto my new computer, thinking that, somehow, iTunes would "reach out" and grab all of my iTunes music files, without my having to do anything.  I don't think it works that way, right?  I think I have to import all of my music files into the newly installed version of iTunes, before I will be able to access those files through iTunes.
    Is this correct?
(I still have the first computer, but I am unable to boot it up.  Since I have recovered all of my music files through Carbonite, I don't see the first computer as an issue, right?)

  • I would like to use GarageBand to remaster downloaded music files that are in iTunes.  Poorly mastered files keep clipping and damaging my speakers.  When I try to use an iTunes file as a new project, it greys out the iTunes songs so I can't select them.

As I said - look whether your original file is damaged or not. If not, I wouldn't change it and find out what in your system makes it sound like it's clipping.
Good sound file, with volume maxed out. No need to change anything.
The same song clipped - no chance to repair.

  • Libraries - how can iTunes lose them?

I am at a loss. iTunes is a famous Apple product and yet it is apparently so unstable that if you dare to move the files, even when following instructions, suddenly you can be left quite helpless, with not a song in sight. I have spent the entire evening resurrecting my iTunes folder on the second attempt, which I moved to my Hard Drive from my external drive, and (at great length) also fixed the artwork which was really muddled (a lot missing that had been there before, as well as some that was quite wrong). Then I decided to make a second library for some work files.
I followed the help file carefully but now I cannot open my entire, large, collection although it is there in the music folder. The new library I gave a new name to, but iTunes does not see it.
It's rather a bleak outlook, isn't it, because I see a lot of unanswered posts on this forum, and that suggests that there is something not quite right with the software, if so many people are having problems and there is not adequate help either in the form of articles or as people online to help sort it out. What a pity!
But if someone can shed light on this, I would be very grateful! It seems that I cannot select the new folder by using preferences. Why not? I am sure I have done it before.

I rip a music Cd. It goes to the itunes music folder. I transfer this ripped Cd out of the itunes music folder. Hi.
I'm struggling but making some progress. I did find the artwork I was installing last night (that's good) but not where I expected, and I found all sorts of iTunes files all over the place. I think what I've got is actually what you described, as I did drag my music folder over from the external drive and dropped it into a new (named differently) folder, but I have no idea now whether iTunes is pointing to that folder or not. It does not contain a data file called iTunes Library. The 'good' album artwork folder is somewhere else!
Where are all the files that you need to run iTunes on your set-up?
I think one problem that many of us must be running into is the naming of the components. You said that you delete all the music in your iTunes Library - but I don't think you can't do that unless you mean delete the data file called 'iTunes Library'. What I suppose you did is delete all the music files in 'iTunes Music'. But I don't see how iTunes knows where to look for the files in the place that you put them - because that folder will not have the iTunes data files with it.
And did you know that the iTunes Music folders all contain data files that look identical to the data files in the iTunes folder but I am not sure if they are....What are they? For example, in among my music, looking just like one of my albums is a folder called 'Album Artwork'. And I'll bet you've got one too.
In other words, iTunes makes an 'iTunes' folder with various data files in it and your music folder called 'iTunes Music' and then, inside 'iTunes Music' are some files with identical names to the data files. Why are they there? Can I delete them? Why is the structure of this set-up not explained anywhere? More to the point, how do I put it all back together again into one operating whole?!
I hope some people will think about this but I can't get back for a few days.

  • Transfer music files from Nano to iTunes/hard drive ...

I hope someone can help me ... my hard drive crashed recently so I lost all of my music files that were on iTunes because I did not back them up (smart, huh?). Fortunently, I do have most of my music on my Nano. I am trying to transfer all of the music files from the Nano to iTunes. I tried dragging the files, but that doesn't work. Does anyone know of another technique to use in order to accomplish this? Any help will be appreciated :)

You can't sync your music back from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward..

  • ITunes 7.1 has changed how my music files are organised - why?

My preference is to store all the music on my PC underneath iTunes, thus:
    My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\{artist}\{album}
I do not purchase music from the iTunes store (there hasn't been one in my country until very recently) but I do import CDs from my own collection, and also mp3 files which I obtain (legally) from other sources such as emusic.
I have had the "keep iTunes music folder organised" and "copy files to iTunes music folder" preferences checked. To avoid duplication, when I have new tracks to add to my library I move them into a 'New Imports' folder inside 'iTunes Music' and then invoke "File > Add Folder to Library" in iTunes.
Id tags in these mp3 files are not always consistent w.r.t. artist names, so I often have to select a few tracks, and edit the info so that the artist/album names are standard. When I do this the files are physically moved into the correct folder (and so I have one "Beethoven, Ludwig van" folder, rather than the dozen or so variations on that name which have been imported, and the other now-empty folders have been deleted).
So far so good - up until the latest iTunes upgrade, that is.
It appears that this version has changed the way iTunes operates, and it now uses the "Album Artist" field in preference to the "Artist" field. Actually that can't be strictly true, there must be other factors at work too: this afternoon I imported an album with 33 tracks; the album artist was empty while the artist was spelt in two different ways. I selected all the tracks in iTunes-Music and used "Get Info" to give all 33 tracks the same artist; the result moved 32 tracks into one folder (named as "artist") and left track 23 in its original folder. I then selected track 23 alone and checked the artist and album artist fields, and the result moved the other 32 tracks into the same folder as track 23 (named as "album artist").
What's going on? A "what's new in iTunes 7.1" document would probably be useful but if Apple have released one I can't find it.
    Cheers
    T

iTunes keeps no memory of the previous folders things were in so no obvious way to reverse the change. iTunes shouldn't move your files about if that option isn't ticked except if you use the option File > Library > Organize Library > Rearrange files in the folder "iTunes Media" (or you "consolidated", in which case the originals would still be in place). If it's not that then I've no idea why it did what it did. Ideally you would have a backup to recover from such a situation.
If your files are all correctly tagged with their respective genres so that it is easy to identify "audiobooks", "teaching", "study" etc. within iTunes then you could modify my script ConsolidateByMoving to move selected files to precisely where you want them.

  • HT1711 My computer caught virus,  My songs are listed in my library, but the music files are gone!  I have them on my  separate hard drive but don't know where to put them back on my computer so itunes recognizes them.  Help !

My computer caught a virus.  My entire drive was wiped clean, however, I had recently done a backup to a portable hard drive.  When I got my computer back from the tech, and logged into my itunes, my library shows all my songs, but NONE of them have a music file associated with it - therefore I cannot play it.  I have located the music files on my external hard drive, confirmed they play, but don't know how to go about getting them from my hard drive to my computer.  Can someone please help me?????

In iTunes, go to File > Add to Library and select the files/folders you would like to add.
You can also choose to consolidate library after that to move them off the external.

  • How do I get my music files to imported to itunes

I recently bought the latest iMac and used the Migration Assistant to import all my music from my old computer. I can see on the iMac where my music files are but iTunes won't import them. No clue what's going on right now.

How did you Migrate? On original Startup, or after starting up and creating a user.
If the latter, then you migrated data is in the migrated user's account.
If that is the case, log into the other account and move the music into the /Users/Shared folder. Then, log into the account you want to use and import the music into iTunes.
If that is not the case, please explain where your music is located.

Hello, I have deleted many songs from my Windows iTunes library; but, the music files remain on my hard drive and are taking up space.  I need to quickly and efficiently find these music files to delete them.  I would prefer to not have to download another utility to accomplish this.
While I now have iTunes setup so that any future deletions will prompt me to move the music file to the recycle bin, I want to clean-up my hard drive.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I have 274 music files that my itunes library can't locate. About 75 of those songs I have purchased through itunes store but still can't find and I can't re-download them but they show up in my "purchased" playlist with the i warning next to the song. Please help me determine what is wrong.

    Hello Hmahon,
The Default Location for iTunes Music on your Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music/iTunes/
(Username is your Account Name on Mac) go to the location as mentioned above and see if you find your Music there, if No Music is available there then you can download the Purchased songs by Deleting the Dead Tracks from your iTunes Library and then Download it from your Account.

  • Copying music files to Mac HD iTunes folder, but iTunes doesnt display them

Hi. Presently I am copying all the my iTunes music files from a hard drive that was used on my old PC onto my iTunes music folder of my new MacBook. Having copied a selection of these files my iTunes does not pick them up and the only way i can make it find them is to go to the folder of the individual artist album files and highlight to Open in iTunes.
Surely there must be an easier way!
(The files which i am copying are MP3 while the files i already have on my Mac iTunes are MPEG 4... does this affect it?)

Drag the files into the Library icon in the iTunes source list. iTunes uses a file to keep track of the songs in its library and the location of each instead of checking the contents of the iTunes music folder to determine what appears in the library; therefore, items added to the iTunes music folder manually won't appear in the library.

  • How can I get my Mac to read my Sansa Fuse mp3 music files and sync with iTunes?

I have a SanDisk Sansa Fuse and my computer recognizes that it's pluged in but my music files are shown as empty on the computer.  My Mac is not reading my music files.  My goal is to transfer the music I currently have on my Sansa Fuse to my iTunes library.  Help!

.exe files are Windows Applications and therefore they will not run under Mac OS X.
You will need to either :-
    1. Install BootCamp (Apple), then purchase and install a copy of Windows.
    2. Purchase a copy of Parallels and a copy of Windows, install both.
Both of these solutions will allow you to run Windows apps on your Mac.
Remember though that when you are running Windows in BootCamp you will not be able to use iMovie. It may also not be very easy to move content from the Windows applications into iMovie.
