Music files turn to "0 bytes"

I have been having a problem with my music in iTunes. It seems that whenever my computer defragments, some songs become unplayable. The file is still in iTunes and in the itunes music folder, but it's size is 0 bytes. I don't know if it is from the defragmenting, a bad external hard drive, or iTunes. If anyone else has had this problem, please let me know what you did to fix it.

Nasty. Your best bet is to use data recovery software to extract & backup whatever files you can, then completely reformat it.

  • Music files turned to Other files, now can't play music? help

I ejected my ipod while i was importing a cd and then it restarted itself. now all my music (65 gb) has turned to 65 gbs of other files on my ipod, and it says i have no music on my ipod. What do i do? can i get the songs back, or do i have to restore my ipod and put all my back-up files on the ipod? i would much rather just get back my songs obciously but i dont know how. any suggestions?

Yeah...that happened to me too one time. I had to restore the ipod and it worked fine afterwards. I don't know if there's another solution but at least restoring it works.

  • Original file cannot be found for most music files, w/large external drive

    Hello.
I am getting the error message "original file cannot be found" most times that I play a song in iTunes 6, though I am always able to locate the music file in my iTunes Music Folder. This is infuriating!
My music collection is large -- 90.08 GB, and is on an external FireWire drive.
    Can somebody help me?

    mgallope,
    welcome to Discussions.
Everytime you turn your ext hd off, iTunes reverts your library to its original location, which is within your mac HD.
In order to locate the music files, turn your ext hd on, plug it into your mac and wait it be recognized in Finder. After that, open iTunes Preferences>Advanced and change the location of your library from the original location to the new one. Wait until iTunes reorganizes the library and try playing any song.
Unfortunately, you´ll have to do this every time you shut your ext hd off.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers,
    Paulo

  • IPod Classic won't turn on due to water damage, is there somewhere I can take it to recover the music files on it since they're not saved on my computer?

Please help, will lose thousands of songs if I can't save music files or turn on iPod, it's an iPod Classic Video.

If I'm reading your post correctly, you mean your iPod is not waking up from sleep properly?  If your iPod's controls aren't functioning correctly, a software restore on your iPod is the recommended course of action, though doing so will wipe the contents of the iPod and requires a resync to your library.
Could you elaborate further on what the exact problem is, when it happens, what you're doing as a result, etc?  Does it still play music when it's asleep? Does it wake up when plugged in to your computer or dock?  All of this information can help us pinpoint the problem and offer a better solution.

I was on Itune match last year and I do not want to renew this year.
I turned it off, but I can't see my music files anymore...
How do I get all my music back to my computer?

What about if I want the entire playlist available so that I can view it in my finder the way I was able to before I made it a playlist?

  • My movie files turned into music files

I connected my ipod to a different computer the other day and I didn't realize that the itunes wasn't up to date. Because of that, somehow all of my movies & tv shows became music files. I was able to fix some of them, however, I am still unable to switch some of the movies/tv shows back to videos. Some of the videos lost were ones bought on itunes..
So I'm just wondering if there is any way to retrieve the videos without having to buy anything for a second time.

i don't have all of the things saved on the computer anymore.
i deleted them to create more room on my computer.

  • Just updated my OS to os5...why did all of my music and video file turn into an "other" file and how do I fix it?

I just updated to OS5 and all of my video and music files are gone and now I have an inaccessible "other" file about the size of the of the old music and video files.  When I go to sync music files in itunes they never show up on the phone.  Help!

Never mind.  Just read some similar questions and tried restoring it to backed up version and now everything seems to be working.  What a relief!

  • Importing Existing Music Files to New Computer

    Hi:
I have a new computer and am trying to get iTunes to recognize the existing music files on an external drive (created via my previous laptop). I changed the Pref-Advanced=Folder location to the external drive but it does not see the existing files. If I import folder then the first one works but the second messes up the existing album/folder structure and I get 2 or 3 songs per folder, even for the folder that came in OK (I have turned on "Keep iTunes Folder organized") . Also, very tedious to import one folder at a time. Is there no way to say "get all the stuff under this main folder or drive"?
    thanks
    don

Don - If "Get Info" looks like it is not editable, that usually means the song file is set to "Read Only," which you can fix in Windows via right-click, Properties.
As far as consolidating albums, after the songs are imported you can highlight a group of them and use Get Info to edit the "Album" and "Album Artist" to new values.

  • Questions on organizing/sharing music files on 3 PC networked drive

I just added 1Tb network drive to 3 pc home network... I am planning on moving my iTunes music folder from the older, smaller network drive. I exceeded the 160GB size of the old drive when converting all of the WMA losselss files to Apple lossless while maintaining the old WMA files(I still think the Windows Media Player system is superior). With the new addition to our network, I am planning on the 3 pcs sharing music files... (my wife has been using iTunes for a while, I have just recently went over to the dark side)
What is the best way to organize the files??
-How to shuffle all without the folder of Christmas & Holiday music playing.
    -Segregate each users individual files.
Any advice or suggestions are appreciated, I know it would save a lot of time and pain instead of the trial and error method.

Thanks, Jason & Mike. This is how I resolved the problem. Turned out the disk with the data was in NTFS format. Neither my eMac nor my wife's Carbon iMac (prehistoric, in other words) was able to read it, on repeated attempts. In process I discovered (to my surprise) that the external hard drive attached to my eMac (a 320 Gig My Book) was formatted in FAT 32 format, and that the PC laptop (Thinkpad) read from it, and wrote to it, without any problem. (Is FAT 32 less than optimal for use with a pre-Intel Mac?). So I just copied the needed files from the NTFS disk to the FAT 32 disk, via the Thinkpad. When I reconnected the FAT 32 drive to the eMac, it turned out that it was easy [with some fiddling] to put the titles of the new music into the iTunes Library, without having to copy the music itself into iTunes. Making playlists does still seem to have to go manually. Sometimes the "New Playlist from Selection" option automatically gives a name (the original name) to the album from which the music came, sometimes it doesn't. Rationale not clear to me. Other problem: often the sequence is jumbled (this is after I added the whole collection of folders containing music to my iTunes Library in one fell swoop). Usually it was possible to correct this by copying track names for albums one album at a time from the external HD (in Columns view, selecting all the tracks in each folder simultaneously) directly into the playlist; the playlist name then always had to be copied or typed in separately. I don't know if I'm missing an easier route. Also, I see that I have version 4.7.1 of iTunes - I'll download a newer version! Don't know whether newer version will affect what I want to do in a positive sense.

  • ? After updating my iTunes match, I noticed that some music files were no longer listed on my cloud on my laptop.  They are still listed on my iPhone. These are files imported to the cloud from legitimate CDs.

Just updated iTunes Cloud.  Noticed that some music files are missing, entire playlists.  They were here a few hours ago, now they are not.
But they are still on the cloud menu on my smartphone.
Files uploaded to cloud from CDs, legit, no boots or anything like that.
My iTunes is 10/7.0.21.  I have the newer version on a desktop and don't much care for it, so have resisted updating on the laptop, which is my primary computer.
I've rebooted the computer, turned off iTunes Match and turned it back on again.  No change.
Lots of questions.  How can my cloud catalog be different on different devices?  How can I get this stuff back on my lap-top cloud?  Anyone else having problems like this?  I'm trying to trim my physical collection by importing stuff to the cloud and discarding the physical media.  Am I shooting myself in the metaphorical foot?
    Suggestions much appreciated.

You might want to post this over in the iTunes Match forum.

  • ITunes not finding all my music files.

My itunes says it cannot find alot of my music files yet they are in the folder specified in my Itunes preferences iTunes Music Folder Location.
How can I get iTunes to confirm the location and correct this?
On a side note I find that my iTunes changes the location specified for the "iTunes Music Folder Location" from time to time. Why would this be happening?
    I am using iTunes 8.1 (50)

    Thanks for the quick response.
Yes the folder is located on an external drive so it could be that it was not turned on at some point. That being said how do I get it corrected in iTunes? Is there an quick way to fix this? How do I get rid of the ! in iTunes?
Thanks and I look forward to your reply.

  • Why does iTunes move my music files and create new albums?

I'm running iTunes 11.4 on my iMac running Mavericks 10.9.4. My iTunes library is stored on a WD MyBookLive NAS.
I've not had any problems with this set up until today. When I double clicked on a song it moved it completely into another album, gave the file the wrong name but still played the right music, it had also changed the file information to match the wrong folder. When I re-added it to iTunes it put it back into the wrong album!
I have also seen it move songs as I double click them to play from one album to a new album of the same name but the artist name goes from 'Soupdragons' to 'The Soupdragons' Both these folders then exist on my NAS. This is crazy, what is happening? Fortunately these errors have happened to old music that I have the CD's for so I can easily rectify it, but any help as to why it's happening would be great.
    Thanks Tim

Go to iTunes > Preferences > Store and turn off
Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases
Share details about your library with Apple
On any iOS device go to Settings > Music and turn off
    Show All Music
Close and reopen iTunes and/or reset the device and you should see your version of the metadata for each track rather than the original store data.

  • Why does iTunes corrupting my music files!??

Ok its been a week since I've gone out an bought myself a well 160gb iPod Classic, looks fantastic and have used mates iPods before with no problem.
A week later... I've been pulling my hair out.. not good at my age.
Every song I play in iTunes (any version) or transfer to the iPod ends up garbled, distorted, skips the file all together, plays like a chipmunk.
Converted a movie to .mov played fine in iTunes and perfect on the iPod.
All other music programs play these files fine! Until I open up iTunes and right click on a song and click get info, pop up tells me about the file etc.
Closing that and then trying to play the song in another music app the song fails!
Playing it in Media Player Classic outputs this error:

Guys and Gals I've tried everything over the last week and thinking about returning this headache. For the money spent on it I'd expect it to work straight away, the iPod itself crashed 45mins into playin with it trying to sync music to it!!
Seriously any help is great. I've tried the apple support page and everything is up to date in terms of drivers and software, directX etc.

  • Missing music files since iTunes upgrade 7.7.043

I have several problems right now with my iTunes. It appears that maybe it could be related to my recent upgrade to iTunes after reading through other posts about lost files.
My problem is that I have all my music on an external drive which used to read as the E:/ drive. I just recently signed up for wireless internet with Verizon and have an USB modem. When I first installed that and then opened my iTunes all of a sudden my external drive became the F:/ drive. So then all of my music in my library could not be found. So I changed the location of my iTunes library to the F:/ drive.
So I reinstalled my music into my library and unfortunately doubled my music because it duplicated all of it. So I slowly began the process of deleting duplicates.
I got to about H in my albums...and the next time I opened iTunes to continue this tedious process....the files couldn't be located. With those lovely ! symbols next to each song.
So now I have duplicates of my music....26,000+ songs and they can't find their files.
I then decided before I delete everything...I would reorganize my iTunes library because for some reason all my music seems to be in multiple folders. But during this process I was not able to locate almost half of my music files.
This was my last attempt tonight...I opened iTunes while pressing the Shift key and created a new iTunes library and imported my iTunes folder. I now have 10,000 songs but am missing about 3,000. Is it really possible that iTunes lost some of my music. Can I get my music off of my iPod?
    Any ideas...or am I screwed?

After weeks of working out what the problem was I finally found out. In my case I had recently purchased Paragon NTFS for Mac so that I could write to an NTFS formatted external hard drive. This was where the issue was when iTunes tried to write to the external drive where I keep my iTunes library and iTunes media folders. Every time I tried to download a song from iTunes, it could not write to my external drive and said that the file or folder was in use. The Paragon NTFS for Mac software 'driver' was causing this to happen and as soon as I turned the driver off on the Paragon software admin tool, my problem was solved! Seemed like the driver was locking out iTunes when trying to write. So if anyone else has this issue, turn off the driver when using iTunes. If you are not running Paragon, then perhaps you have a similar conflict with another application.
