Music from ipod to mac and/or iphone

hi, for years i would import my CDs into itunes as MP3's and put them on my ipod. i thought you used to be able to get the tracks off the ipod so i didn't save them anywhere else. the computer that had all the files on it is now gone. i have all these tracks on my ipod and it won't let me add them to my new mac. i saw a post on how to get purchased music off the ipod which worked but there are probably about a thousand songs from my CD collection sitting on my ipod that it won't let me drag onto my mac or iphone. these aren't even protected tracks in any way, they're off my own CD's. i can't even go from my ipod to my iphone. any ideas? am i screwed?
next time - back up to something other than the computer. gotcha.

There is actually a way to transfer songs from your ipod to a Mac or PC without any 3rd party software. Cnet.com had a story about it some time ago, it involves putting the ipod in disk mode and on a PC when you open up the ipod in the windows viewer then turn on show hidden files and lots of folders will pop up each with ~30 songs in them and you can then move them to the computer manually. It works in a similar way for Mac but I don't own one so I am not exactly sure how it works. I searched on cnet for the article but I can't seem to find it. Maybe they took it down, but you can try to search for it.
Edit - Note, this will not work for your iphone since it does not have a disk mode like the ipods do.

  • Moving photos and music from iPod to Mac

I have a MacBook and my hard drive just died. I was wondering if I could move my photos and music that are currently on my iPod back on to my mac's new hard drive. I had the box in iTunes checked that said store full resoultion photos on iPod after enabling disk use, but I currently don't have disc use enabled. Could I enable it and then sync the photos and music back?

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Changing to manual will also enable the iPod for disc use: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Senuti Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
iPodDisk PPC Mac Only (experimental version available for Intel Macs)
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac & Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac & Windows
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you have full resolution copies of the photos on the iPod have a look here: Apple Knowledge Base article - Use Disk Mode to copy photos from iPod
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Play music from iPod to Mac

Is there a way to use an iPod 5th Gen as an input device on a Mac?  I've tried it with a cable on all 5 of my Macs with no luck, the sound pref panel doesn't see it as in input device.
I ask due the recent death of the network drive iTunes lib was on.  Yep, backed up but due to some time constraints there's been no opportunity to switch the source in iTunes wait while it updates the library then go in and rebuild everything. When ever I've upgraded iTunes or restored from backup iTunes looses track of everything with 4Tb of media, well you can guess. So I want to play whats on the pod through the mac till I get time to do the iTunes shuffle.
    Wordy yes, hope clear.

  • How can I transfer my music from iPod to iPad and iPhone without a PC

I have all my music on my iPod nano and want to transfer it to my iPad and iPhone. How can I do this. I don't have a Mac or PC.

    You can't without a computer.

  • Everything frozen when trying to move music from ipod to mac. Cannot eject.

My hard drive recently crashed, and as a result I lost all of my music. I had most of it on my iPod, so today I downloaded a program called iPod Viewer 3.0.1
    ( http://download.cnet.com/iPod-Viewer/3000-18545_4-24961.html?tag=mncol )
I put my iPod (30gig iPod Video) into disk mode, and connected it, and began to transfer my music. About a tenth of the way through, the program froze. I pressed "Cancel," and eventually hit "Force Quit."
I had been importing the music into the iTunes Music folder.
Now, iTunes won't open, the program iPod Viewer won't start working again, and I cannot properly eject my iPod. Neither program is running, but when I try to press "Eject," Finder tells me that the iPod is in use and cannot be ejected, and I need to quit applications and try again.
    Help?

See turingtest2's user tip on Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for information on various 3rd party tools that can be used to recover content from iDevices to iTunes.  You can also achieve a partial recovery (media only, possibly without artwork), as follows:
Run iTunes with your iPod not connected, select Edit > Preferences > Devices and check the Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically box
Connect your iPod, select the Summary tab and check the Enable disk use box
    Exit iTunes
You should now be able to see your iPod as a disc drive in Windows Explorer.  Make sure that you've configured Windows to show hidden files and folders (Organize > Folder Search and Options, View tab).
Open the iPod_Control folder on your iPod, and copy the Music folder that you'll see there to your desktop
Still using Windows Explorer, right click on the Music folder just copied to your desktop and make sure that both the Read-only and Hidden flags are cleared.
Run iTunes, select File > Add Folder to Library..., navigate to and select the Music folder on your desktop
The previous content of your iPod should now be added to your library.  Any songs/albums for which you'd previously used the Get Album Artwork function will no longer have associated images, but these should be easily redone.
This should be regarded as an "emergency" procedure only.  There's no excuse for not maintaining an up to date backup of your iTunes library (as with any data that you value) - computers, and in particular hard drives, always fail ... you just don't know when it's going to happen.  See another of tt2's user tips - Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy - for a suitable/recommended method.  Although cloud-based backups are the way things are headed, its probably still simpler to use an external hard drive - this may not be as high-tech as using the cloud but is more robust, at least as far as not having dependence on an internet connection.

  • How do I sync music from both my mac and pc?

    Okay...here is my problem.
When I bought the first ipod all the music went on my pc. I then bought a second ipod and, using the same account, bought other music on my imac.
Now I can either put the music on my ipod from the pc, or the mac, but not from both. When I try and sync the two, 30 of the songs say they won't transfer.
    Any solutions?
    Thanks!

Maybe you should switch from auto sync to manually manage music. Then you can click and drag the items/playlists from either computer to the iPod when it's connected.

  • Switched from PC to Mac and syncing iPhone issues

I switched from a PC to a Mac computer and now my iPhone 4th generation will no longer sync to iTunes.  Any suggestions?

Is you computer authorized for the Apple ID(s) used to purchase the apps (in iTunes>Store>Authorize This Computer)?   Did you check "Sync Apps" on the apps tab of your iTunes sync settings and check the apps you want to sync?
For contacts, are you trying to sync your contacts with a supported program on your computer such as Outlook?  Did you check to do so on the Info tab of your iTune sync settings?  Caution: be sure not to sync with an empty contacts or calendar app or you will lose both.  Be sure there is at least one contact and one calendar event on your computer prior to syncing, which will trigger a merge or replace prompt when you sync (choose merge).

  • How to transfer Music from iPod to Computer/Windows/Mac

I want to transfer iPod music to my mac, because iPod memory is not enought to use, whether I need a tool to help me to transfer music from iPod to my mac, because apple devices is not allowed to direct transfer music from ipod to mac, whether you have some good idea? Please help me!!!thanks!

1.The first thing you want to do is connect your iPod to your computer via the white USB cable.
2.After your iPod is connected, open My Computer, or just Computer from the start menu and look for the iPod drive. It should be in the (F:drive. You will see the iPod logo in the listing of disk drives.
3.If you are using Windows 7: Open the iPod drive and click on ORGANIZE. Then folder and search options tab. Then View and Show hidden files and folders.
If you are using Windows XP, open the iPod drive and click tools then Folder options then View tab then click show hidden files and folder. Finally click Apply.
4.Now you should have a new folder called ipod_control. Open that folder up and you should see the following: Calendar, Contacts, ipod_control, notes, photos, ect. If you are trying to save all of your music then the ipod_control folder is the only one you need to worry about.
5.Open the ipod_control folder then open the music folder. Copy each one of those folders (should look similar to these: F00, F01 ...) onto your computer. You can do this by creating a new folder on your desktop and dragging the files into the folder.
6.Open iTunes and insert the new folder you created on your computer's desktop into: library ---> Music
You can now transfer music from your iPod to this new computer with out losing all of your music.
    Hope it can help you.

  • Can't get my music from ipod onto new computer?

So my iPod has been synced to our desktop, and I have bought some music from my ipod that is not on the desktop. But now i have a new computer and i want my music from my ipod, not the desktop, on the itunes on the new computer, but transfer purchases isn't working. So.. is there a way to transfer from the ipod on to the new itunes? Or can someone at the genius bar do that for me?
    -Thanks

First of, in iTunes, select "Store" in the menu and authorize the computer.
Then, when your iPhone is connected right click on it and select "Transfer Purchases", this should move your content from your iPhone to your computer.

    Hello there,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link after the Apple support document below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

  • Trying to transfer music from iPod to Music Library in iTunes, impossible?

I have an old monochromatic iPod from about 5-6 years ago, 20gb. My desk top just crashed and I had to reinstall the operating system. Lost all programs and files. Reloaded iTunes with a clean Library. How can I sync my iPod and restore the Library without losing everything on the iPod? Most of the music was transfered from CDs.
Would greatly appreciate the help. I know enough about computers to get into trouble. Great at following directions though.

  • Can I download music from my PC onto my new iPhone and still have my iPhone use iTunes on my Mac without a problem? I have no music on the Mac because it is new. Can I download music onto iPhone on both PC and Mac?

Can I download music from my PC onto my new iPhone and still have my iPhone sync with my Mac without a problem?
I've had an iPod over a year and have not done much with it except download music onto it from my PC. Just recently have purchased the iPhone.  When I got my iPod I didn't have a Mac, but now I do.  I am really into my iPhone, so now I want to make sure that I don't do anything wrong. So can I connect my iPhone to both my PC and my Mac without it getting mixed signals and stop working.  I have no music on my Mac but plan to download music into iTunes on it.  So can I download music from both computers without problems onto my iPhone?

    StoneMountainGirl,
No. You can only music to your iPhone from one computer at a time.  If you try to load music onto it from a 2nd computer, it will erase the current content on the iPhone and replace it with whats in the iTunes library you are connected to,
