Music in Browser = Stereo... Music in Timeline = Mono... WHY

So I've extract .aif files from my cd... loaded them in my project... play them in my browser and they are stereo... play them in my timeline and they are mono...
they are linked as a stereo pair when i go to modify, and they are panned hard right and left... but nevertheless when i go to get it duplicated, their scope reads it as mono... i watched the screen and was stunned... i can't figure out why...
I have a .dv clip that plays as stereo in the same project, but all of my music is reading as mono... as far as i could tell in my project i thought it all was stereo, but then the qc department of the production house informed of different and we've spent days trying to figure it out...
can anyone help me or am i gonna have to make the plunge and pay apple support to help me figure this out... it's very important and very time-sensitive... thanks in advance!

Double click the stereo pair audio track to open it in the Viewer. Do NOT unlink the stereo pair in the Timeline!!!! When you open the file into the Viewer, you should see one tab that says "Stereo (a1a2)". If not, your file is not stereo.
When opened in the Viewer, you should see 2 tracks of waveforms there under one tab, and the pan should be -1.
I'm not sure what "scope" you mean, as there isn't an "audio scope" per say. What "scope" are you refering to?
Highlight the audio file in your Browser, right-click (cnt+click), and in the drop down menu go to "Item Properties", then to "Format..." Look down that list of info in the left hand column to find "audio". In the Clip column it should read "1 Stereo" and under the A1 column, "Left" and under A2 colun, "Right".
If the format info does indeed show the info I've specified here, you do in fact have a stereo track.
If not, your AIFF file you imported is not stereo.
The only other thing to verify is this; Go to your Timeline, then to Sequence Settings under the Sequence menu. Look at the Audio Outputs tab, make sure you have two outputs and that it is set to "Stereo" and NOT to "Dual Mono".
It is really that cut and dry. The file is not a true stereo file, or you have your outputs set to only 1 or dual mono. Simple as that. Nothing else can change all this (unless you unlink the stereo pair and mess with the pan, thus NEVER unlink them, and the stereo pan will be automatic).
Check all this out and let me know what you find.

Captured stereo convert into Dual Mono

Hi all,
Some of the footage I have to work with is captured as DV with stereo audio tracks.
That's not so nice, because the audio is actual 2 mono channels (2 different mics on interviews)
I know I can switch off the stereo pair in the timeline. But that's tedious. I need to alter everyclip everytime I drop it in the timeline. Also I cannot Unpair the clip in the viewer, while I do need that because I want to lower the level of only one channel during chosing the quotes (because of wind in 1 mic for instance).
So it would be nice to be able to alter the master clips in the browser from stereopair to dual mono.
But I canot figure out how. Can this be done in FCP?
Can this be done in Quicktime.
Any ideas.

NB (I know how to set up dual mono in Log and Capture. It's just that 10 tapes, that someone else did capture in stereo, and I need to work with)

UODATE:
Just opened one of the good clips (captured as DUAL Mono) in Quicktime. Then I see 2 seperate soundtracks. Sondtrack 1 with one ch1 set to MONO and Soundtrack 2 with one ch1 also set to MONO. It that way it differs from the two channels in the one Soundtrack 1 in the clips that were captured as Stereo.
Export the original masterclip from FCP with Export using QT conversion. and set it to export 2 discrete channels will indeed create a file with 2 Mono cannels. And they import as such. "2 Mono" it says.
Reconnecting the master clip to the newly created Dual Mono clip let FCP still think this is a stereoclip (As Andy pointed out, this is indeed not working)
Reconnecting the sequence clips to the newly created Dual Mono clip seems to work. But when I do match frame, then there comes again a stereo-version of the clip in my viewer. (also of course this is because it is looking to the original masterclip that we cannot change in FCP, as we saw in the previous sentence).
So I found a way to create new Dual Mono masterclips, but still I'm not able to alter the originals to the sequence clips.
The building will close here. So have to leave.
But I will try if I can change the settings of the masterclips from within an XML...
OR the solution would be in QT to split the two channels in two soundtracks in Quicktime... But how?

Stereo audio rendering as mono

My husband and I recently purchased a MacBook Pro last November, recently installed Final Cut Pro 5 on it 2 months ago, and now we're experiencing audio problems we've never encountered before.
Fresh new project, new timeline, import a stereo audio file, double click and playing from the viewer it's perfectly fine, but put it on the timeline, shows up on two separate tracks and needs rendering, we render it and it turns into mono. It didn't do this before, we don't know what we changed, it used to work but now it doesn't. We must have changed something but we can't figure out what we did wrong. Even if we separate the stereo track into two mono tracks on the timeline, pan one left and the other right, it remains mono.
Please help, we're completely stumped on this one! Thanks!

The only problem with converting the audio files to 48 is that we have about 200+ audio files, living on about 17 layers, each with their own settings for speed and reverse and eq and more. Going back to reimport all that stuff would kill our deadline by about 40 hours = not possible.
But I did download that utility you suggested, it discarded our prefs, and now everything seems to be better. I'm having to "fool" FCP by placing an EQ filter set for 0 gain (i.e. no change) onto each clip, which trashes the render file, and when it rerenders it's ok, sometimes. For the ones that aren't changing out of mono I go back in and throw away that eq filter and re-render and then it's in stereo. Very strange. Also strange is that some of these animation clips now have 1 frame of black at the tail end before cutting to the next clip - very odd since the original files have NO black at all.

If you mean the headphones work but the speaker does not:
- Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
- Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost

least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
- Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

Stereo import problems creates mono to stereo problem/question

After 10 hours of uploading video to the hard drive I'm finally ready to work on the project, but something odd happened. After the first tape upload all the files switched from two track stereo to one track mono.
How does this happen? I don't relish redoing 9 hours of video input and I'm hoping there's #1 a simple way to return it to stereo with out it ever doing this again and #2 are the mono tracks still recorded in stereo and able to be processed into two track stereo.
I've looked around the archives and found little, I'm even having difficulty finding the audio capture settings as I'm working off an FCP book.
In all the years of recording off his camera it's never switched from it's stereo settings so I'm a bit befuddled.
Any help/hope is appreciated.

Do you still have two audio tracks, eg. A1 & A2?
If so, select both tracks and hit Option-L.
This will make two mono tracks a stero pair. You will see two sets of small forward facing triangles to indicate the action is done.

I have a stereo audio file. I'd like to put it into GB2 with one side of the stereo file as one mono track and the second side of the stereo file as a second mono track.

Leon, Here is a file explaining what Monomaker does.
Monomaker is a simple mono-merging and stereo-recentering utility plugin.
You can use the mono merge parameter to progressively merge your stereo audio channels into a single mono signal. Turning mono merge all the way up to 1 will make your sound completely mono. Turning mono merge all the way down to 0 will leave your audio unaffected.
You can then recenter your signal using the pan parameter. The panning is equal power (meaning that as you move further over to one channel, sound from the other channel is copied over to the first channel in order to keep the total volume consistent).
Also, in case it's useful, you can re-route the 2 input streams in a variety of ways by using the input selection parameter. "Left-right" means that everything is normal, "right-left" means that the left and right streams are swapped, "left-left" means that you lose the right stream and get the left stream copied to both inputs, and "right-right" means that you lose the left stream and get the right stream copied to both inputs.
Monomaker's signal path is input selection first, then mono merge, then pan.
I have just downloaded it myself and have not looked at it yet. I apologize in advance for not checking it first before posting it. It may or may not help you, and I do not know if it works in Garageband.

well depending on how your audio is brought into your system you can select it as two streams of mono or a stereo pair. In reality, unless it's mixed in stereo, that's just two streams of mono locked together. Other streams brought in via other means, can have a lot more audio channels, e.g. 8, 16, 24.
In your case, with what you're doing, two separate channels works best, so you can control the levels of two very different audio sources. If, for instance, you were taking the feed from the mixing board during a concert, you might want their stereo out. Otherwise you might be dealing with the 1.2 zillion channels that they're mixing live.
I like separating the tracks coming in. I work with people who prefer to lock them together. Locking means the tracks move together during editing. Ok, fine, but I'm usually dealing with different audio sources, like you are: a camera mic (safety on location) and a close mic (shotgun, lav). Or I have a shotgun source and a lav. I want to determine the best source audio for the shot. Sometimes it's a lav, sometimes a different feed from somewhere else, sometimes the shotgun, and sometimes a mix of two sources. But if they're locked together and pre-set to come out evenly from both speakers there no way for me to make a determination. The other guys like to cut and figure out the audio later.

If by "music" you mean the Music app, do you have the same playlists set up in iTunes? You could be losing them when you synch.

If you are syncing music to the iPhone automatically, you won't be able to drag and drop tracks on to the iPhone and the music will be grayed out.
You'll have to Manually Manage the music.
Configure iPhone, iPad, or iPod for manual management
If you have iTunes 7 or later*, follow these instructions:
Connect the device to your computer.
Open iTunes.
Select iPhone, iPad, or iPod in the Devices list.
Click the Summary tab and select "Manually manage music and videos".
Click Apply.
Even when you have enabled manual management, you can still sync some content automatically. Select any content tab, such as Video, to enable automatic syncing for that type of content.

Fcp5 stereo to fcp 4 mono

i know this is a pretty obscure issue, but recently i digitized some footage in FCP 5.1 onto an external HD, then opened the scratch clips in FCP 4.5 and upon importing the audio automatically converted from stereo to channel 1 mono (erasing audio channel 2).
has anyone else ever experienced this, or know of a way to preserve the clip's stereo soundtrack?

Actually, Andy and Leigh are on the right track - this is a QT-related issue.
FCP 5.x (or later) captures dual mono media as two separate sound tracks in the created QT file (do a quick Command-J in QT Pro to observe 2 Sound Tracks). Previous versions of FCP, as you're seeing, expect to see dual mono in a single sound track in QT.
The only workaround that I can remember - and it's been a long time since I've had to do this - was to open the QT files in QT Pro and export using Stereo audio. FCP 4.5 should then see both channels.
Of course, you'll probably have to break the stereo pair in FCP, but at least you'll be able to work with both channels...

How to Use Multiple iDevices with One Computer

The column browser is no longer available when trying to view music in iTunes. I'm only able to use the column browser only when viewing playlists. Why?

I noticed that after one of the recent updates to iTunes, I am unable to view my music using the column browser type view. Only when I select one of my playlists is the music displayed with the column browser. When I select Music to view the contents of my library, only the album covers are displayed on the right side. The old column browser type display is not available any more - it is grayed out. I do have "show list views for all media" checked in my Preferences / General tab.
Did Apple screw up or is it me?
