Music Library keeps defaulting to iTunes folder on Hard Drive

I have gone into advanced preferences and changed my iTunes folder to a folder on an external hard drive connected to my Airport. It works fine until there is n interruption in the connection. Then, the iTunes folder always defaults back to the original iTunes folder under Music on the hard drive. Because I have a very large music collection, it takes a good ten minutes to change back to the external folder. Also, because of the size of my collection, storing he music on my Mac is not an option.
This happens frequently because my airport connection frequently disconnects for a couple seconds and, then, automatically reconnects.
I have even attempted to trash the original iTunes folder but the computer just creates a new empty one to default to.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I have my iTunes Music Library on an external hard drive connected to of the three Macs on my home LAN. If the machine with external HD is not on and I launch iTunes on one of the other machines, the folder location reverts to the default location as you described. When I boot the host machine and then reestablish all the LAN connections, I simply relaunch iTunes on the other machines and they all happily find the correct Music Folder locations. A relaunch of iTunes is all that is required.
If you are playing iTunes and a relaunch is not possible, you need to look strengthening the Airport signal to avoid an interruption. I don't use any wireless setup so I'm not familiar with that procedure.

" When I did this, my library showed all the music I have "purchased" from itunes but did not have the music that I downloaded a long time ago through itunes from my old CDs."
    Correct.
" How can I get that music to show up in my library now on my new computer?  "
Copy it from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer.
The sync is one way - computer to ipod.

iTunes helper launches OK, but not iTunes itself. Am I being dim?

The iTunes application should be installed on the system drive. You may need to repair iTunes to fix that error regarding a missing .exe.

  • Accessing iTunes music library that's been moved to external hard drive

I copied my music library to an external hard drive, using the iTunes instructions "Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive."
Now, when I open iTunes, no music is listed. I can see that the music files are in the external hard drive, and I was also able to restore them to the original iTunes music library. (That also was blank until I dragged them back from the desktop.) I'd like to keep the library in the hard drive and add future material there, but for now it seems like it's in two places but inacessible in both. Any ideas on what I need to do, or have I totally screwed up?

  • Adding songs that are not in iTunes folder on hard drive

I'm trying to drag and drop songs from a hard drive onto by 120G ipod classic. I keep many of my MP3s on a separate drive that is dedicated just to music files, but this means they are not in my iTunes Music folder (C:...\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music).
Basically, my problem is that I can drag some songs over but not others. I don't get any sort of error, but when I drag most songs onto the iPod (using iTunes 8.2.1.6) the status at the top will quickly flash "syncing ipod, do not disconnect", but the songs are never added to the pod.
Can anyone help? iTunes is set to Manually manage the songs (as opposed to syncing) since I don't necessarily want them sync'd!
    Thanks for any help!

It wasn't clear from your post, are you trying to bypass iTunes entirely and drop songs (native files) directly to the iPod? You can keep songs outside of the iTunes Music Folder, and you can drag songs from your iTunes library to the iPod, but you can't drag a song's native file directly onto the iPod -- you have to add the songs to iTunes first, then add the songs from iTunes to the iPod.
You can still have your music in iTunes but keep the native files organized how you want them outside of the iTunes Music Folder. Just de-select the options "Keep iTunes music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" (see your iTunes Preferences on the Advanced tab).
If I mis-read what you're doing and you really are trying to add to the iPod from iTunes, then the problem might be with the native files. Do they play OK in iTunes? What version are the tags?

  • How do I get all my music library from my iPad to iMac after hard drive replacement?

Recently my iMac hard drive crashed and was replaced with a new one.  Thankfully the entire music library was still on my iPad.  However, with the new hard drive, iTunes will only let me move over the purchased tracks from the iPad to the iMac.  This is not good since most of our music was purchased on CD and loaded into iTunes.  iTunes states that you can only sync with one computer and the iPad is showning a different library than my iMac.  How do I fix this?  Apple is holding my legally purchased music hostage!

No, they aren't holding it hostage. You are relying upon Apple to provide a service  you should be doing by backing up your computer properly.

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer is designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is purchased content.

For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • IPod Music Library Deleted, but when I browse iPod hard-drive...

I've been listening to my iPod from Winamp for about 2 weeks now, and have had not a single problem. I doubt I've used iTunes in the passed three weeks, so I don't see why this problem would arise.
The problem: I cannot view any of the media files in iTunes, Winamp, or on the actual iPod. But, when I browse the iPod's harddrive, I can find all my media files, of course it's in the iPod-readable format where all the names are random number/letter strings. Nevertheless, I'm able to open the songs from Ipod_Control folder, and play them in Winamp, but when I go to the 'Portables' tab on Winamp, it shows I have 0 files. The 'about' option also shows that I only have 9GB left, being it's a 30GB iPod.
The diagnosis: I've been told to tweak iTunes, and to use the iPod updater (What a travesty) and so far I have had no real diagnosis, or solution. So I'm asking, before I go ahead, and sell this **** thing, how do I restore it back to what glory it once had? And don't even respond if you suggest I do something that might cause all my information to dissapear, because I have 21gb's of music and ID3 tags totally filled out, including album art. (60+ hours of editing/adding/downloading)
PS: My iPod is not under warranty.

That's kind of absurd considering that the files are all there, the iPod just isn't 'picking' them up. At this point, I really don't care, mainly because I sold it, but I would hope this gets answered for those who are having the same problem.
Last time I buy from Apple. Yay for Pop Culture.

  • I am using a T61 ThinkPad with an external hard drive and my itunes library keeps disapearing but remains on the external drive. Any idea how to fix this so my music doesn't disapear all the time? It's a real drag pulling music back into iTunes each week.

In iTunes 11 uncheck the preferences setting in in the iTunes Preferences panel "Advanced > Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library"

  • Itunes folder on external drive keeps reverting back to local iTunes folder

So I have all my digital music, pictures and videos stored on an external drive. I have 3 different MBP acessing these files and itunes randomely reverts back to the default local itunes folder and then I have to change and organize all over again which includes dups that I have to manage and delete later. What a pain in the arse! Does anybody have a solution that prevents this from happening, running Lion on all 3 MBP.

They are all using the library (and by that I specifically mean the library file, not just the media files) at the same time?  Maybe when one is actively using the library file it prevents the others from using it or somehow interferes and makes them think the library on the external is not usuable and they revert to the internal one.
If this is set up through some fancier nettwork then probably hte person who can answer your question will want to know the details.  iTunes typically revets to default when it cannot find a library on an external drive and perhaps something is happening with the network to change the identity of the drive in the way your computer perceives it.

  • By backing up the iTunes Library via saving the iTunes folder on an external drive, is it also backing up all iPad and iPhone backups as well as App Data and Documents from your devices?

If I backup my iTunes Library by saving the iTunes folder on an external hard drive using the instructions contained in the link below, will it also back up all my iPad and iPhone backups as well as App Data and Documents from my devices? In other words, will it also create backups for the backups? Thank you.
Back up your iTunes library by copying it to an external drive
Furthermore, when it is time to restore the iTunes folder I copied to my external drive to a new iTunes program on my new computer, how will it merge the information once I plug in my iPad or iPhone to that new laptop to sync? If I did the iTunes library backup a couple months ago and I've added documents/music/pictures on my devices since then, what will happen when I try to sync it with the new laptop now working off of the iTunes library backup from a couple months ago since the information is no longer the same? Which information will dominate and thus be kept? Will it delete the new information/data/pictures/documents/music off of the devices since it is not on the iTunes program when it syncs?
Sorry for so many questions, but they are all related to backing up and restoring iTunes. I am not very tech savvy if you cannot tell

It would be a good idea to look into a bigger hard drive. They are not that expensive any more and can save a lot of headach. This is even more important if you are buying music from the iTunes music store. If you lost those files they are gone.
The point of having it on your PC and iPod is to have a backup. If the iPod fails, or you need to go back to the DVDs and find they are scratched, or just can not be read you have lost days of work converting and organizing all of those songs.
Or the iPod could hard drive could fail and then you will have to try to bring all of those files back from DVDs. You end up with a mess since some songs will probably be on multiple DVDs, have different names ect. Trying to reorganize it all can be a pain.

  • How can I import my library that is saved on a  external hard drive but it's not saved on the iTunes media folder?

I need to restore my computer to it's factory settings but I don't want to loose my playlists and my library (windows). I can copy any file from the computer because it's in good working order. All my music it's on a external hard drive, but there's lots of media files that I don't want to sync but need to keep! Any way to do that!?
    Best Regards

I think that I didn't explain my self correctly, My iTunes media it's not consolidated. May I consolidate the media on a external drive (X:\). ?
Yes. But consolidate to X:\iTunes\iTunes Media.
The why I'm asking is because the music library (176gb) is way more than the computer drive (C:\). Remember that all the media is on a external hard drive (J:\)
The steps I gave earlier will work to copy the whole library onto the new drive, in the correct layout for future ease of use.

If the entire library is on the external drive then simply copy the iTunes folder into <User's Music> on the new computer, then install iTunes. If you've already installed iTunes you will want to remove the empty iTunes folder in <User's Music> first.
If it turns out you only have the media folder on the external drive then take a look at this post...
