"Music" library listed under my ipod now?

I just bought a separate ipod for the gym and when I plugged it in I suddenly had another "Music" library listed directly under my Ipod icon. I even (somehow) created a playlist underneath that but when I went into the tab to click "Sync" music it erased all of what I had just built.
I've never seen this before. Is it a new feature? If so, what is it's purpose and is there any documentation on this new setup?
Thanks!

Hi aubiem,
Welcome to discussions. The "music" library that shows up when you dock an iPod is simply a way to see what is on it while connected. This can be useful if you have a music collection larger than the capacity of your iPod as it provides one convienient place to review everything you have decided to add. Keep in mind that this is not editable directly. Changes must be made by selecting the tabs at the top of your iPods main page. You can elect to add your playlists by clicking on the "music" tab.

  • Can I Use My Music Library With itunes and ipod if it's Only Saved to an External Hard Drive?

I have very little space left on my internal hard drives. I have the same music library saved on an external drive.  To get some space back, can I delete my music library from the internal drive C and just use the library on the external drive? Will it work in my itunes library and ipod? I want to download more music but I'm afraid to right now, because there is hardly any space left!

    Rick,
For everything you should know about Time Machine, see http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html.
If your photos were on your internal drive then, yes, they are likely to have been backed up by Time Machine.
However, if Time Machine starts running out of space, it will delete old back ups and thus your photos aren't really 'safe' just on a Time Machine back up. What you really need to do is either:
    Buy another external hard drive for storing your photos and other files, or;
Back up your photos to DVD's: there are a number of cataloging apps that you can use to catalog your files or, if you have named them something specific, use something like DiskTracker.
Either way, don't rely on your Time Machine back-up to store your photos.
Good luck - call back if you need more information,
    Clinton

  • Is it common to keep a music library on an external drive now?

I did this about five years ago, when it was relatively new, and stopped because it was sometimes wonky. Given the popularity of the MacBook Air I'm thinking that perhaps the wrinkles might be ironed out? I have a very large music library (200 gig) and would love to move it to our Time Capsule. Does this make sense with a fleet of devices (iPad, iPod Touch, iPod Classic, Nano) and one main computer (MBP) on a very fast WiFi LAN? One more snowflake detail: Our Time Capsule began exhibiting to exhibit the odd "connection has been interrupted" error when I tried my Calibre Library on it. If you recommend going forward I'll just switch back if this becomes an issue. I mention it in case someone reading this knows of a workaround.
    I appreciate any help.

Brilliant; thank you! I hadn't heard about locking in the IP but it makes perfect sense. Should be easy to do in Airport Utility, too.
Only the first part of my question remains. Does keeping a music library on an external drive work well now? Are there any pitfalls to avoid? Should I consider breaking up my collection into two libraries: one for audiobooks and the other for music?

  • Why will my music library download onto my iPod nano but not on my iPod touch (5th gen.)?

I imported a few CDs to my music library earlier and I tried to download them onto my iPod touch and it wouldn't work. The songs just have grey dotted circles beside them. I'm not sure what this means.. Anyways, since it wouldn't work on my touch I thought I'd try and put them on my nano. And sure enough when I synced it, it worked. Can someone please help me out? I'd rather not have to carry around 2 iPods around with me now..

  • Problems transfering music library from RealPlayer to IPOD

Just bought the 80 gb IPOD. When I transerred my music library, which is very large and (unfortunately) on RealPlayer, many of the songs are cut off when I play them on the IPOD. They still work fine in RealPlayer on my computor. But the IPOD cuts out (and goes on to the next song) when there is approximately 15% of the song left to play. Very strange.
More key facts: 1. library is about 68GB. 2. All of the library was originally saved using the RealPlayer software. 80% of the library is in the RealAudio format (.ra extension); the balance is with the MP3 format. The songs that cut out on the IPOD are all ones that were saved with the RealAudio format. The ones with the MP3 format work fine on the IPOD. So, 80% of my songs on the IPOD end early 3. Most of the songs were saved on the then-current RealPlayer version during 2004 or 2005. So it was not ancient technology. All was saved at 192kb/s whether it was in MP3 or RealAudio format. Any help would be very much appreciated.

"The songs that cut out on the IPOD are all ones that were saved with the RealAudio format. "
That is the problem. That format is not compatible with the iPod.
You need to convert them to a format that is.

Are the songs checked in iTunes to sync to the iPod?
Is the iPod signed into the same account that purchased the songs?

  • I downloaded the new itunes and updated my ipod 3, anyone else having problems getting music library to sinc to ipod?

I am having trouble sincing my music library to my ipod touch 3g after the update, is anyone else having this problem?

Read this Apple Support Article on handling error 69  it may be a bad corrupted file.
Or worst case the iPod Hardisk need to be check, as you are saying that it is taking longer than usual.
Do the iPod Disk Diagnostic as posted earlier by tt2, it wont fix your problem but helps in troubleshooting.

  • IPod Touch 5th Gen: Music not listed under artists nor albums, only in Songs

I just purchased a new iPod Touch 5 Generation, I have lots of albums on my PC, tried to copy them to iTunes, works perfectly and existing in iTunes, when checked the iPod Touch 5th Generation, the songs appear under Songs But nothing under Artists nor Albums!
All my Albums are with well maintained id-tags.
    I checked the compilation, It's already un-tick.
    Please help...

Nothing shows in the artists or albums columns at all, or specific songs don't show up in the corresponding artist or album listings?
Standard things to try would be a reset, then a restore (although with a new machine that ought not to be necessary).
I'm leaning towards the possibility of multiple tags. iTunes is much happier when files have a single ID3v2.3 tag. Where multiple tags exist there is the possibility that iTunes and iOS might process different tags. Select the tracks of a test album, uncheck the tracks and sync to remove from the device. Select again, right click and use Convert ID3 Tags... > None and click OK. Repeat the process two or three times just to be sure. Then use Convert ID3 Tags... > v2.3. You will need to refetch/reembed any artwork. Check the tracks again and sync. Any better now?

  • The newest version of Itunes does not have all of my old music library currently on my Ipod/Ipad. I have purchsed songs now in new Itunes and I can't sync to get them on my Ipod.

I downloaded the new version of Itunes but it is missing all of my playlists. And I've purchased new music now in the new Itunes but it will not upload to my IPod

Well, OSX 10.9.2 is free, which should solve the iTunes problem, but 10.9.2 isn't bug free, & you'll lose the ability to run any PPC Apps if that important, as well as needing to update many Apps & Printer Drivers.

  • Cannot get music videos to appear in Music Video list on 80gig iPod

Hi I'm on a mac here and my 4th iPod and first video, when I take a music video that I know will load onto my new iPod as a movie (the only video I have from the 'iTunes Music Store' is Kraftwerk - Robots and is listed as movie and iTunes will not give me access to the otion button to choose movie or music video it is greyed out) and set it as music video after syncing going to the iPod reveals an empty music video library at root or via the 'all' playlist and if the song had been in my movie folder .. it no longer is.... any mac users out there who can tell me what i must be doing wrong with my music videos?
I believe those who have the music video playlist working are enjoying having your music videos playing on shuffle rather than having to select each one individualy in the movie list. If you read this and can't help but can say one way or the other, please post if you are on a mac and the feature works or does not work for you, it would help me work out if its a problem local to my mac or a general issue needing a fix from Apple... also does your ipod list the music videos by artist or just the track name?

That worked! Thanks Limnos! Can't believe I didn't think of that, it was so obvious.

  • Library list with tilde (~) character - now ignored

    Hi
on my music lists on my other ipod, I used the ~ character before a genre to move it to the top so I wouldn't have to scroll through a pile of them. Now, the new version ignores the tilde. Is there a way to revert so that the ~ is not ignored, and is near the top for alpha numeric characters?
    thanks

I don't think so. For artists, albums, composers and songs you can alter how they are sorted, but unfortunately not for genre. It's apple trying to be helpful. My advise would be to stick an AA in front instead, no other way round it really as far as I'm aware.
