Music on iMovie

Hi,
I'm tring to use iMovie on my Mac for the first time, and I want to get a music on it.
But I'd like to have just a few second of this music, right at the middle of the song, at the very begenig of the film.
How can I cut the beginig of the song and the end of the song ?
Thank you

There are several ways to do this.
1) One way is to drag the music track in from the Music browser, and drop it on the frame where you want it to start. The music track shows is a ribbon beneath the video clips. You can drag the left edge of the music clip to the right to shorten the beginning. You can drag the right edge of the music clip to the left to shorten the ending.
2) You can drag in the music track as before. Then click on the small gear icon at the left of the music track. You can open the Clip Trimmer and trim the music track there.
Here is help for the Clip Trimmer.

I recommend that you watch this video tutorial from iMovie 08 days for how audio works. There are some new capabilities in iMovie 11, but the basics are the same.

I'm having the exact same issue, but still haven't figured out what it is. I note that at the top of this thread it indicates that there are two "helpful" entries and one "solved" entry, but I can't find the solved one, so maybe someone will repost it here or kindly link to it.
There is one icon missing though.
As I read through the excellent tutorial at http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/imovie_09stone.html I scroll down to the point where he talks about dragging music in from iTunes, which is what I'm trying to do. I can see, in his screen shot, the extra little icon that is a red oval and a white "1" in it. I don't get that icon when I am trying to drag my music into the video. I do get the green and white plus icon when I try to drag my music in. Also I DO get BOTH the red 1 and the green plus when I try dragging in a sound effect, which I can do with no problem. But why not the music?
I've been able to drag in music with no problem in other productions, so I can't figure out what is going on with this one. I'm sure there is a setting somewhere that got flipped, but I can't figure out where.
In desperation I also tried adding an extra title slide at the end of my video just to make sure there is more video time than music time in the production, but that didn't help at all.
    Any help guys?

    Hi
Due to some kind of copy protection in iTunes - I don't copy directly from this in iMovie
to my projects. (Most often the result of doing it in iMovie is a DVD without any sound)
    I do
    • In iTunes - collect needed audio into a new Playlist
    • then burn this out as an Audio-CD .aiff (NOT .mp3)
    • This CD I copy into a folder on my Mac (often containing other material that's connected to the project)
    • And then I drag and drop these .aiff files into my movie project in iMovie.
This works Greatly and even more so when I do my DVD.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Is there a way to fade music in iMovie for iPad2?

Is there a way to fade music in iMovie for iPad2? I am making a short presentation using photos - not video. The music soundtrack ends abruptly. Is there a way to have it fade out?

It shouldn't crash but it could be that your library has some user-agent detection that's going awry when running in an unknown browser.
You can always use the HTML5 WebAudio API to go beyond simple audio file playback.

  • ITunes music on iMovie no longer works (iTunes 7)

I just upgraded to itunes 7 and now the music i had on an imovie does not work - saying the computer is not authorized (but it is!!!).
The same song on itunes is fine - imovie does not play that song!
    Help.

Same problem. I created my iMovie project on my iMac (G5), stored it on my LaCie drive which I then plugged in to my Mini so I could burn it to a DVD. Now I'm told I'm not authorized to use the two songs in the project - but only on my Mini. I just updated all the Mac software on the Mini tonight, and it still does not work.
I have OS 10.4.7 on every mac I own, and all the software levels are the same on every computer. However, the Mini is an Intel, and my other stuff is G5. Does that make a difference?
The project is Christmas greetings from home for the troops in Iraq, and it's my daughter's 4H project. We have to mail the DVDs by December 1 in order to get them to Iraq by Christmas, so I urgently need some answers.
    Thanks!

  • Finding Music in iMovie

I would like to know where I could find the music files that are used in the iMovie trailers (in iLife 11). I have gone to my system drive > Library > Audio > Apple Loops and found music there but not the stuff thats used in the trailers. The music I find there are the loops and "stingers"  from soundtrack pro and garage band. Can someone point me in the right direction? Many thanks!

In Finder go to Applications and right-click (or control-click) on iMovie.app - in the window that opens select Show Package Contents. In the Contents>Resources folder you will find all the Trailer music. The name of each track starts with SoundTrack. See this picture:
    John
PS. It's OK to copy and paste stuff from the Contents>Resources folder, but don't otherwise mess with items there as it could cause problems with iMovie.

  • How can I get the background music from iMovie trailer, "Romance"to be used in another imovie?

Is there any way to download the background music from the  iMovie trailer template "Romance" to be used in another iMovie of greater length than that of a trailer?

In addition to Tom's good advice, another method is to access the audio file in iMovie's package contents folder.
In Finder, in the Applications folder, right-click (or control-click) on iMovie.app and select Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu. Open the folder Contents>Resources. In that folder you will find components for each Trailer, including the soundtrack. The file you are seeking is named "SoundTrack - Romance.m4a".
Copy then paste the file to your Desktop (don't otherwise mess with items in package contents folders!). Open the file in QuickTime - it is titled "Love Story FC2". Opening the Inspector in QuickTime (Window>Show Movie Inspector) reveals it as AAC format. If you wish, as Tom indicated, you can Export the file from QuickTime in other sound formats, such as AIFF. If preferred, you can import either the AAC file or the converted file to iTunes (or other audio apps) for use as required.

  • Getting Error Message when importing iTunes Music to iMovie 6?

Am I missing something? I used to be able to import my iTunes music to a movie creation in iMovie 6. I'm now getting an error message "Error during import. The file could not be imported: The file could not be found."
I have moved my music to an external drive - don't know if that made a difference.
    Thanks

Interesting...I have moved my iTunes music onto the external drive probably six months ago. That music still works off the external via iTunes. I just looked in iTunes and my preferences are showing my local drive to store music. And recent music that I have purchased (last few months) is showing in the local drive. When I picked one of the songs from the local it works.
So now I guess the question is what will happen if I move the music from the local to the external and reset the preferences in iTunes. It should work right?

  • Need help adding music to Imovie.

I've been working on a slide show in Imovie and importing music I've purchased at Itunes. I find some of the songs need to be shortened to work with the amount of pictures I have. What I did was purchase a song at Itunes, burned this song to a CD, then saved it back to my hard disk to work on it in Jasmine- an audio editing program. I was told this was the way to do it in the Itunes discussion group. When I save it out of Jasmine after shortening it, I saved it as an AIFF file. I then tried to bring it into Imovie, but the program doesn't seem to allow me to do it. Am I going about this all wrong? Is the a simpler way to do this?
    Dick Skover

    Hi!
Jasmine- an audio editing program. I was told this was the way to do it in the Itunes discussion group.
I am sure that everyone in the itunes discussion group gives very good advice. However, have you tried simply importing the burned song to imovie and
    i then
editing it by splitting and deleting or by direct trimming?

  • Am I licensed to use music from iMovie on You Tube?

I made a video on iMovie with all original content. The only thing I used that was not mine was the (I thought) royalty free music and sound effects that iMovie supplies. I publised it on You Tube. I just recieved an email from YouTube mthat says:
Your video "Oregon Coast Ocean View Home for Sale - Port Orford", may have content that is owned or licensed by rumblefish, but it’s still available on YouTube! In some cases, ads may appear next to it.
This claim is not penalizing your account status. Visit your Copyright Notice page for more details on the policy applied to your video."
And my video now has ads playing next to it! You ube does this without any prior notification, nor any way to contact the supposed owners of the license/copyright.
Is this correct? Can they do this? If not, why is Apple allowing these guys to hijack our videos for  profit?
    Thanks for any insight.

This question comes up from time to time. YouTube and Facebook are both wrong.
    Have a look here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/10620134?messageID=10620134#10620134?messa geID=10620134
    and

There are a number of con-men who think that they can earn a quick buck from claiming that they own the copyright to Apple’s royalty-free jingles and sound effects included with the iLife applications. These are all free to use.

  • Can you use ilife music on imovie videos to post on Facebook?

I thought that it was safe to use the music/sounds that came with IMovie on videos and post them without copyright issues.  But when I tried to post one to Facebook they told me it was a copyright infringement, and are requiring me to dispute it.  Before I do that I want to make sure I have not made an error.
    Can someone answer this question?
    Thank you.

You have the right to use the music. Unfortunately, even record companies can use these sounds as well, and then they try to slap a copyright on it. But you are totally within your rights.
Specifically, this is permitted in the Apple End User License Agreement for iLife, section 2.G.iii. which you can see here. http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/iLife11.pdf
When you dispute it, do not claim to have original music, or that you own the copyright. Just state that you are licensed by Apple Computer Inc to use the music according to this document. It may help to name the jingle or sound that you are using.

  • Using purchased music with imovie/idvd

Apologies if this has been answered...these threads get too long to look back and back. Haven't used imovie/ idvd much since 2003-4-- so the copy protection measures on the latest version look very restrictive. Do I have this right: I make a slide show or movie via imovie-- I use music from a song purchased via the itunes store, I burn the slide show/movie to a dvd/ I give the dvd to 6 relatives, i.e. not for commercial use... and could it be that the dvd will not play with music unless I authorize their computers? In other words what exactly does that message mean than pops up that says the file won't play the music on another computer, unless it's authorized. Will it play on a burnt dvd, played on a TV?

I burn the slide show/movie to a dvd/ I give the dvd to 6 relatives, i.e. not for commercial use...
It's not legal, even though you're not charging for the DVD (copyright laws apply even when there's no commercial gain involved, hence the many suits the RIAA has filed against people sharing via Limewire and other P2P networks). Music you purchase, whether from the iTunes Store or via CD, is for your personal use and cannot be given away. If you want to create a video or slide show that you're going to give away, either obtain royalty-free music - there are a number of web sites where you can obtain such tracks - or create your own using GarageBand or a similar music creation package.

  • Can the music in iMovies trailer be changed?

I am using the imovies trailer but i really want to change the music. Does anyone know how to change the music?

If you choose File>Convert Trailer to Movie, you'll be able to edit or delete all the individual elements including music.
Then you can just drag in your replacement music.
