Music on new PC is missing in iTunes - saying unable to locate

After downloading iTunes to new PC, (the old one is now broken).  In my new PC, in Itunes, some music in hte library has an ! next to it and when you try to play it a message says "some music can not be located".
Most of this music was originally purchased from iTunes. I have looked in the apple support but can not see a solution. THis music which is missing is on my old iPod, is there a way to upload it from there back into my PC, in order that the new devices (on which the music wont download) can be updated?
Please reply in a non-tecnical way, as some of the solutions are a bit over my head.
Thanks

all of my songs purchased from itunes say unable to locate original file

Did you recently move any files around on your computer. iTunes looks for the files in the original location; if they are moved this can create problems. One possibility is to right click on one of the songs with an exclamation point, and the go to "Get info." This will open a pop-up window that has several tabs.Click on "Summary." At the bottom of this screen, there is a section that says "Where:" This is the path of the original file. Check that location and see if the file is located there (probably not, or you wouldn't get the warning).
Next, I would search Windows for the particular song. Assuming that you find it somewhere, I would bet that is where the rest of the missing files now reside.

  • My media drop menu for music, tv shows, etc. is missing in iTunes?

My media drop menu for music, tv shows, etc. is missing in iTunes?

A lot of it may be artwork. My iTunes is 40,000 songs (213Gb and I have almost 9Gb of artwork - and that's been downsized to 300X300 "web optimized" images too)
Also, there is a discrepancy between the way iTunes shows files size and the way OS X does.
iTunes (most likely because there is also a Windows version) uses "binary" calculations (1mb = 1024kb and so on) where OS X uses "decimal" calculation (1mb = 1000kb and so on).
120gGb in iTunes is 122,880mb. That same 120Gb in OS X is 120,000mb.
The files are the same size, but OS X will show more available space than iTunes will.
Still, artwork and duplicates are the #1 & #2 culprits.
Lastly, the bit rate of your music can be a factor. If everything is 320kbps or more... or Apple Lossless (800kbps+ usually) your music files are a lot bigger than you probably need, unless you're a music professional (DJ or producer). Try converting them down to a bit rate in the area of 160 or 192kbps. 192 is the MAX for anything in my library, because I only use it for home listening.

I'm trying to sync music and ringtones into my iphone, but itunes says my phone is using a different library and i have to deleate it but i dont to do that, how can i still sync my new stuff?

The screen that says "Download Now" also shows the proposed iTunes version number (in the box below):
    Be sure it indicates 11.1.3.

If in the message window it says that "...MSVCR80.dll was not found", go to this guys webpage: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/msvcr80-dll-not-found-missing -error.htm.  I followed his instructions exactly and problem solved.

  • HT1349 I am trying to burn music to a CD - message says:  unable to locate the original file and will not burn the playlist.  Is there a setting that I must change.  ?

I am trying to burn music to a CD-R-  message says:  unable to locate the original file.   Music is on the iTunes program but will not play or burn.  Is there something I should change to be able to burn to CD?

If they were songs you purchased from itunes, try redownloading them from your purchases...
if that doednt work, make sure the optuon to copy files to itunes media folder is checked in settings, then find and download from the net. and re-add them to your library

  • IPod says unable to locate music video question

Big time newbie here to the whole iPod thing. I bought the touch for my wife for Christmas and I'm trying to load it up with some stuff before I give it to her. I bought a music video on iTunes and when I sync and try to load it I get a message that says "unable to locate video". I look in the iTunes folder and I can see it there. I restarted the iPod and the computer and still got the same message. I can watch the video on my computer via the iTunes player. Any suggestions? Thanks.

If you backed it to iTunes you should be good with all the pictures, videos, etc. and they are still here. However there isn't really any way to retrieve them without the use of 3rd party software. Sorry for your loss

  • I have now transfered my files of ripped CD's to my iTunes library three times. On each occassion, the conversion seems to occur fine, the files play, but when I close my computer and return the next day, iTunes says it cannot locate any of those files.

I have now transfered my files of ripped CD's to my iTunes library three times Since upgrading to iTunes 11 and Windows 8. On each occassion, the conversion seems to occur fine, the files play, but when I close my computer and return the next day, iTunes says it cannot locate any of those files. Three times. Beginning to lose my temper. Advice? Suggestions? Could the fact that my original library is located on a network drive have anything to do with it? Thanks for your help, all.

    Repair security permissions
Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and system full control to this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7/8 shouldn't be too different.
Repeat for the media folder if it isn't a subfolder of the iTunes folder.

Great, that's what I was looking for.  Thanks for the quick response.  I knew that that feature existed in this router, but I couldn't remember what it was called or where to find it.
The funny thing is, I recall distinctly setting up the DHCP reservation initially, but when I went to check it now, the reserved client list was empty.  I have no idea how it could have become depopulated, thus opening the door for internal IP address reassignment of the Remote Desktop computer which led to the RDP ports no longer being forwarded to the right internal IP address and thus the failure of the Remote Desktop connectivity.

  • Does anyone know what to do after the IOS 5 update when it wont sync your music or apps or even register with itunes saying device is not connected/ the required file is not found?

My iphone after the update to IOS 5 (which i had problems updating first anyway) wont even register with itunes saying its still half way through a restore when its not i have already restored it 4 times but still wont sync music or apps or finish restoring my phone because it always comes up device is not connected or the required file is not found?
Any ideas?? ive gone the 02 shop and they just said to keep trying to restore it but its really not solving anything.

Unfortunately yes, though technology would never move on if it kept to older standards and did not strive to do more.
The app store always gives you the option to use a previous version of the app IF it is available for your device.
Sorry but you are stuck without new hardware.

  • My Itunes says it cant locate my files what should i do

Today I went on itunes and tried to play a song and it says it cant locate it, I checked my Ipod and all the songs are still playing fine on it, Some of the songs are bought off of Itunes. Is there a way to redownload it or transfer the songs from my ipod to itunes?
Before this I was trying to copy the songs from itunes to Windows Media Player and not all the new songs were in the file

Have you deleted the original files you copied? Deleting means moving to the Trash and emptying the Trash.

  • After trying to install last update my itunes now doesn't work- have tried reinstalling and it gets struck saying mobile device not responding. Itunes says unable to successfully install itunes.

After a message on my computer to install an update a few days ago- I now can't open Itunes and have a message saying a module isn't working and I need to re install Itunes. However when I try to reinstall Itunes I keep getting an error message saying mobile device not working and then a message saying unable to install itunes.  Any clues- Is apple stuffing up agian or is my computer mis behaving?

Try a more recent version of my advice. The "for older video cards version" may work when the default version doesn't.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

  • How do I get all my music from new external hard drive into itunes????

Just loaded all my music on my new external and need to put into itunes, how do I do that??

There may be other ways but I think the easiest is to just reinstall iTunes. when you reinstall it gives you the option to search for all music, just make sure the external is pluged to the PC and on when u do it. An other thing is with your music on a external, anytime u turn it off or unplug it you will get abunch of ! beside all the songs in iTunes until u turn it on and plug it back in

  • I tryed to download to tracks of new music and they won't download they just say unable to download on iTunes (ipod 5th gen), I tryed to download to tracks of new music and they won't download they just say unable to download on iTunes (ipod 5th gen)

I have tried to delete the song of the download list and it doesn't appear on my purchase playlist plz help!!

You need to delete the music you got from your friend. You fried does not have the licence/right to give you a copy of it.
I would restore the iPod from a backup on your computer and sync your own media to the iPod.
