Music on one computer, applications on another. Possible?

I just got a new iPod Touch
Here's my problem.
My main computer is a MacBook, which has all my contacts, calenders, etc. It has a 160GB hard drive. I also have an iMac with a 250GB hard drive. I would like to have all my music on my iMac, but everything else on my MacBook. Can I use my iPod in this way? With my music library coming from one computer, and everything else coming from another?
Thanks!

i think you will need to manage your iPod manually to do that, but i think it's possible.

  • Music on one computer, photos on another

    Hi folks,
I have an iMac in my living room that I use solely to store my music and play it through iTunes. I also have a PowerBook that I use for everything else, including managing photos in iPhoto and contacts in Address Book.
I would like my iPod to automatically sync its music when I plug it into the iMac, and to automatically sync everything else when I plug it into the PowerBook. Can this be done?
With automatic syncing, I would expect to lose my music whenever I plug into the PowerBook, and to lose everything else whenever I plug into the iMac. I realize I could use manual syncing to prevent losing my music. However, I add a lot of new playlists each week for a class I teach and it's too easy to forget to add those to the iPod (especially since I can't select more than one at a time); and I don't see a manual sync option for photos or contacts.
The only options I can think of are: 1) removing iTunes from the PowerBook and removing iPhoto and Address Book from the iMac, so that those applications won't be able to sync (and overwrite my data) from those machines, or 2) manually copying my photo and contact data from the PowerBook directly to the iMac each time I want to sync, and then auto-syncing all data with the iMac.
Is anyone else in this situation, and do you have a more elegant solution?
(I've read the knowledge base articles about multiple ipods/multiple computers, and have searched the forums and Google, but I haven't found anything that describes my situation.)
    Thanks!

60 GB iPod Video   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   my third iPod, but the first with photo capabilities

Well, the fiirst option wasn't working because nothing will sync unless iTunes is running. Since iTunes no longer warns you before it starts syncing, when you move your iPod to a different computer, that means any kind of auto-syncing of my music was not an option.
I also got an error message each time I synced with my iMac after removing iPhoto from it (could not find a compatible photo program), which was already getting annoying. Removing Address Book from the iMac did allow me to sync contacts with the PowerBook and not lose them when syncing to the iMac.
Still, this was only 1/3 of what I was trying to accomplish, and I was getting the feeling that I was just fighting against the way this was supposed to work. So I switched to the second option.
This isn't too bad with the help of Sync Pro X, which I already have installed on my PowerBook for daily backups. What I'm doing now is that whenever I update my photos or contacts on the PowerBook, I run a Sync Pro X script that connects to my iMac and copies my changes in those two programs. Then I can do a full, automatic sync of my iPod to my iMac. Under this plan, I'll never try to sync the iPod to the PowerBook -- it's just a one-computer, one-iPod situation.
I've been following this plan for a week, and it's pretty smooth. It's not exactly what I had in mind, but I've come to think that it's the best approach given how the iPod is designed to work.
I hope this little experiment helps someone, if anyone is trying to do what I was doing.
    Cheers,
    -Arlo

  • I want to transfer my music from one computer account to another on my laptop. How do I do that without killing my music or my previous library?

Any help? I'm using a new admin on my laptop and want to sync my phone's music to the new admin account. I have no clue if it will work.

Can I transfer my music from one computer to another via home sharing?

So long as they are on the same wifi network, yes.
Have both computers running and have iTunes open on both computers.
Now, in the iTunes on the computer you want to transfer music to, select the library that you want to transfer music from, as per the following screenshot:
Once the other library loads, go down to the bottom of the screen and in "Show:" select "Items not in my library":
If you want to import all of the songs you can now see, head up to the iTunes menu bar and go "Edit > Select all". Then head down to the bottom of the screen again and click the "Import" button in the bottom-right-hand corner.
If there's a lot of stuff in the library you're transferring from, the transfer may take some time.

    Hi lexipuppy,
I dont know if you have your music on your other computer was on itunes, but if it was, make sure that you signed into your itunes account on your other computer. If you are signed in then your music should show up in your library.

  • Need to move music from one computer to another

Wondering how to move my music from one computer to another. My laptop is being replaced and need to move all my iTunes items from here to a desktop. What is the best/most cost effective way to do this? TY

It is very easy. First get something to transfer your itunes file to the laptop (network$, thumb drive$$ (depending the size), external hard drive$$$ with cost of drive and plus a case it can be costly). Those are in order of slowness! After all those files are on the desktop download itunes. DO NOT download itunes first you will be begging for trouble. Open itunes and it will take a few seconds and it should find the file on it's own. Now all you need to do is sign into itunes agree to all the fun stuff and there you go. I did mine with an external Sata hard drive via esata and it could not of been easier. To find the file you need go into music/my music and find the big file named itunes. just copy and past and let er rip.
    Good luck

  • I would like to transfer a playlist and associated music from one computer on a home sharing network to another without transferring the entire library.  How?

I would like to transfer a playlist and associated music from one computer to another in a home sharing network without transfering the entire itunes library.  How would I do that?

you can transfer playlists using home sharing but it won't copy the actual music files within to the other machine.
however, i believe TuneRanger can do that.

  • I have to move desks a lot at work. Today I bought $30 worth of music on one computer, but now I'm at another desk and another computer and cannot find my music! Every time I change computers I make sure to log out and log back in. So where is my music?

I have to move desks and computers a lot at work. Today I bought $30 worth of music on one computer - but now I am sitting at a new desk and computer and can't find my music. Don't tell me to make sure I log on and off....i do! So where is my music?

The music you purchased is probably in our profile directory on the computer where you purchased it.  Unless your IT department has the computers setup to use "roaming profiles" your "My Music" folder will be stored locally on each computer.  I don't know of too many companies that use "roaming profiles" as they tend to cause about as many problems as they were designed to "fix".  If you are going to be moving to many different computers, I suggest that you consider moving your iTunes Library to an external drive that you move with you.  This way your purchased content is stored on your external drive and not on the local drive of the PC you are using at the time of the purchase.

  • Sharing music from one itunes account to another

We have all our music on one computer with our original apple id on itunes. My daughter now has her own apple id, laptop and iphone. Can I transfer all the music from one computer to another and link/share it with her itunes account so she can download it onto her iphone?

Music can only be synced to one computer....if done on one machine then you go to another...it will erase all content (to stop piracy).
Have him give you the physical file and you put it on your machine. Then try to play it in iTunes. It will prompt for his username and password (yes he will have to give it to you). It will then authorize your machine for his account as well (meaning you can play music from him). Note you have a limit of number of machines you can authorize and thus you will loose one authorization by doing this. So if you end up getting more machines in your home and/or other devices...you are short one account number now.
