Music popping up on teachers machines

I am a network administrator and have had complaints from teachers that all of a sudden a small box appears on the screen and music starts to play and they cannot turn it off. A couple of teachers had to reboot their machine to stop it. How does this happen and how can we stop it? Thanks for any help.

Hi,
right... if i understand that document correctly... i need to make sure that I redirect tcp 80 & 8905 to the ip of my Policy node.
8905 was in the re-direct ACL, but 80 was not (this has not caused me an issue in the past). So i have added it in now and that has made no difference.
interestingly though, the document says that the client should be able to resolve the DNS name of the ISE. Now... this bits interesting... when i open command prompt and ping the FQDN of the ISE, it advises that it cannot find the host. BUT if i do an NSLOOKUP and type in the hostname of the ISE, it does reply with a valid IP.
So to me it is something to do with either DNS, or the redirect ACL not allowing DNS to work properly.
The redirect ACL is quite large... is there are way that I can easily export it so that you can have a look at it?
Thanks

  • How can i put music drive AND a time machine drive on wireless network?

Right now I have a MacBook with ONE external drive with my music and movies… and ANOTHERexternal drive for my backups.
I would LOVE to figure out how to hook both the music drive and the time machine drive to a wireless router so the only plug I have for my laptop is the power plug.
I already have a NetGear wireless router… but it only has ethernet ports out, no usb.
What would be the best/easiest way to network these two external hard drives?
    tx!

Another option, where you can still utilize your existing drives, is to consider a dedicated NAS device that supports both Time Machine and iTunes functions. One such NAS device is the Synology DS415+. It would be far superior than what you have now. Albeit at an additional cost.

  • Sharing music across accounts on one machine without moving files to Shared

I have read other posts about sharing iTunes among different accounts on one Mac, but so far I haven't solved my particular problem. Up until a couple of weeks ago - without reading any background material - I was just treating the two accounts as two different machines. I would open iTunes on one "source" account (which had music sharing enabled), switch to the second account, and be able to see the source account's music as a playlist, just as if it were being shared from a remote machine. I didn't have to worry at all about physically moving the files anywhere. As long as iTunes was open at the source account, I could play the source's music.
I've begun having a problem, though, recently, with the source account "cutting out," as if there were some kind of interference over a network. Which seems strange, given everything's all on the same machine.
I began reading the forums for answers, and did see the idea of moving the iTunes Music folder to users/Shared. The problem is that when I try to choose the the folder at the second account, the folder is blocked from access. I don't understand why this is so for the Shared folder.
If anyone has any ideas about A) the interference, and B) the blocked iTunes Music folder in users/Shared, I'll be very grateful.
    Rob

Sorry,I don't have any idea about the interference.
Your Shared folder might have the wrong owner. It should be 'system'.
Here's a picture of the 'Get Info' of my Shared folder:
You probably want to use the shared folder as described in the second method (not using Fast User Switching) in this article:

    Hope this helps.

  • IPad 2 music does not play and high resolution pictures get corrupted when syncing through iTunes on 64 bit Win 7.  Anyone else have a problem with iTunes corrupting music and pictures from 64bit machine?

Works from a 32 bit XP machine.  Does not work from a 64bit Win 7 machine.  It's 64 bit that seems to be the issue; the music won't start playing, and for pictures, it's when they're more than 768x1024 resolution that they appear very low resolution and/or corrupt.  None of the normal tricks work (different user account; different USB port; different USB hub controller) and the problem is replicable.  The music and JPEG and PNGs, however, are fine if transferred via a Windows network to a 32 bit machine ie it's not the music/image files.

Dear Katrina, the problem has finally been solved, with the help of a computer-savvy friend of mine who came round this afternoon. As a courtesy, and to thank you for all your help in this matter, I want to share the solution with you.
A piece of the puzzle was missing, as you said, and it lay in the tenth line of the XML document I relayed to you....
    <key>Music Folder</key><string>file://localhost/C:/Users/Simon/Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Media/</string>
My friend spotted that the command string contained a sub-folder of the iTunes folder called "iTunes Media". iTunes was expecting to find all my music there, but that folder didn't exist.
So I created a new folder called "iTunes Media", and moved all my musical content into it, leaving all the command files in the original iTunes folder.
Then I moved the "iTunes Media" folder into the "iTunes" folder, so that it was a sub-folder of the latter.
Then I re-opened iTunes and - joy of joys! - everything works once again. I am re-united with all of my music, and without having to make over 14,000 manual location exercises. I can't tell you how exciting that is.
The mystery is solved, and what had me so puzzled seems obvious now. Thanks again for your help. Without you I might never have got to this point.

  • HT201250 Every time I add/delete music to itunes, does time machine backup my entire library?  If so can I limit backup just to added music?

Usimg time machine-every time I add/delete music in itunes library does time machine backup entire file? If so,an I set it up to just backup added music?

It shouldn't be backing up the whole thing again, just the changes.

  • Music icon changed after time machine restore

I recently did a Time Machine restore and everything went well, except now my audio icon files are white instead of black like they were before I did the restore.
Here is what they look like now:
but before they were black with the grey music symbol. Does anyone know if this is a setting that changes this?
    Thanks.

If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know that account password, the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but you won't be able to unlock the Keychain. If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it. You’ll need to reset your keychain in the preferences of the Keychain Access application.

  • Where is all my music after reinstalling from Time Machine?

I recently did a fresh install of Lion on my laptop (now I have upgraded to Mountain Lion) and I recovered all my files from my Time Machine backup. Time machine is amazing at making my computer exactly the way I left it. Only problem is, I don't see my music anywhere on the disk or in itunes. Any ideas on how to get my library back?

The backup of your media and important data that YOU maintain of your computer.
You do maintain a backup in the event of a drive failure or worse, correct?  Failing to maintain a backup is just dumb.

  • Unable to find Mail POP directories on Time Machine to retrieve emails.

I have had to do a full retrieve of all my files from Time Machine. For my Mac Mail I can get all of my directories back from my .Mac address but can not find any of my directories for my POP account where most of my emails were stored. I can find the inbox, outbox, drafts and trash for the POP but not the 20 directories that should also be there.

Thank you - I did that but my mail folders that I'd stored on my mac weren't there, and I was only able to access time machine backups starting yesterday (when I upgraded to ML). There's my current inbox with some random stuff from 2003/4 at the end, Trash has a few emails from 4 or 5 days in early October in it, and Sent has a few emails from early June in it. Weird!

  • ITunes playing music - pops, cracks, and hisses

I've been playing my iTunes library for years now, but have noticed something THIS MORNING.
I try to play any song I've had since forever and I hear audible anomalies like pops, cracks, and hisses.
I try playing the same mp3 in Windows Media Player and it sounds fine.
What's the deal? Is iTunes divorcing me?
    help!!!

OK, so now we know it is a Quicktime problem not iTunes, I wonder if it has got broken in a subtle way.
It might be worth trying a removal and reinstall of Quicktime.
Download the stand alone version of Quicktime (without iTunes) from here:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
Now remove Quicktime using the method here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93698
    ONLY do the Quicktime part.
Next install the stand alone Quicktime.

  • How to sync iTunes libraries on multiple machines without copying music

    Background:
I have 4 machines running iTunes 9, all authorized with the same account. All music is on a networked storage device (NSA). Each iTunes points to the NSA for music files. Each user on each machine has their own local iTunes library for individualized playlists, etc. When music is purchased, regardless of machine, it is automatically downloaded onto the NSA. We have deselected the Advanced preference "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library". Our goal is to have one live copy of our music rather than multiple copies sprinkled about all 4 machines. We do periodic backups of the NSA.
    Question:
How do I get all the iTunes user libraries on all 4 machines to automatically reflect new music purchases? The library of the purchaser is updated just fine, but no one else's is. The Home Sharing Settings option updates the library, but it also copies over the music, defeating the purpose of one copy.
    Thanks in advance!

When I first moved to OS X I decided that all of my/our music should be in one library, with one Apple ID for purchasing/playback and iPod syncing, located someplace other than each user's home folder. Using an alias of the destination folder worked as long as we were all on one machine.
Later when we acquired a second machine the setup was similar, except that the library was on an external HD attached to the newer/faster machine and accessed over our home network. The drawback of this method is that the machine with the library on it has to be up and running (of course).
We've finally moved further into the digital world by purchasing a network drive (NAS to be precise - a My Book World II for those who wish to know), upgraded our router and network switch to GB, and have a third iMac on its way (thank you eBay).
All of our music (the library we started years ago), all of our pictures, and other miscellaneous things reside on the NAS, which is also used for TimeMachine backups (on the non public volume). The idea being that any of us can access any of the media or documents as we need or want to.
Apparently (or I've missed something simple) Apple, in their wisdom, doesn't believe that a setup like ours (and apparently others as well) should exist. That each user and/or each machine, should have their/its very own music library that no one else can have FULL access to.
Home Sharing doesn't allow what I/we've been setting up from the first day we added music to our library. Sure it lets everyone with their own library to listen to other's library's that are up and running (i.e. the machine is on, and iTunes is running).
What we want to do is have all of our machines (the two, soon to be three, iMac's and one PC running XP) access the *same library* with full read/write/burn access AT THE SAME TIME! Hence the logic in purchasing a NAS. What we can't do is have iTunes running on more than ONE machine at a time since the other network users/machines receive this message:
The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file.
Which is certainly not the case since each user/machine can access, read, write, and burn from the above library at will as long as they are the only person doing so.
Changing the permissions on the library file doesn't stick (probably because its on the NAS), otherwise I would have done that and you wouldn't be reading this.
Thanks for any help anyone can give.

  • I just bought a new Macbook Pro and transferred my iTunes archive of music to it. How do I transfer the playlists from my other computer(s)? iTunes on the new machine wants to start from scratch.

How do I transfer playlists from my other Apple computer(s) to my new Macbook Pro? I think I have successfully moved the music (archive) but the new machine wants to start from scratch on the playlists.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751
Essentially you need to copy over the itunes folder
    username/Music/itunes
Over to your macbookpro I suggest using an ethernet cable as it is way quicker. Put it in the same spot on the new Macbook Pro
    username/music/
This should bring over the playlists etc. Then just put the music back in from the archive

  • Time machine won't back up my music drive

When I use time machine to back up my music my external drive with my music on it called "music" won't back up.  When I attempt to re add it to the items to be backed up, from the "Exclude these items from backups", in the time machine preferences,  it at first moves over to the items to be backed up, but when I exit the preferences and reopen it the music external drive shows up again as an excluded item.  I've even named two drives music and neither will time machine allow me to back up.  In the past I've successfully backed it up but can't now.
