Music Server on My Mac

I am trying to figure out how best to construct my music server and I have a Leopard question. I know that on a PC, Windows messes with audio files and it is necessary, in order to get bit perfect audio off of the PC, to install a piece of software called ASIO that gets around the Windows manipulation of audio data. My question is, if I were to use my mac with Leopard installed, do I have a similar problem or will Leopard pass perfect audio out via my USB port? Thanks.
PK

I've never heard of Mac OS X altering the audio output for any reason. Some Macs (all the current models) also have a digital optical audio output port. I mention this because it shows Apple is serious about the quality of audio output.

  • Mac Mini As A Movie & Music Server

I am interested in getting a Mac Mini to be used as a dedicated Movie/Music server for the AppleTV 2.
I intend was it is all set up to just leave it on 24/7 while connected to an external drive.
If anybody has done this yet that could give me some tips or snags to avoid that would be great, or if you have good links for going this route that would be good also.
I was wondering how much processor and ram is actually needed for this use, is the basic mini mac set up good enough or is increasing ram or processing power really going to help?
    What external drive is recommended?
I would assume one that goes to sleep when not in use but will wake up on its own when needed would be nice. If there is a standard rack mountable external drive, one that can easily have room for adding more drives to for future expansion maybe.
Also I see the Mac mini has 4 USB ports and 1 firewire. Is the USB ports fast enough for streaming multiple videos at once, or would the fire wire ports faster transfer rate help?

  • Can I turn off the monitor for Mac Mini and use it as a music server?

I am in the process of upgrading my PC most likely to a Mac product. With the non-server version of Mac OS X, can I turn off the monitor connected to a Mac Mini and use it as a streaming server? Or I have to get the server version of OS X to do that?

I plan to run Logitech Media Server on the Mac to stream music to players. Each player interacts with the Logitech Media Server to select songs to stream. When I turn on a player, it will wake up the computer from the sleep mode.
Currently, this Logitech Media Server runs on a Windows Vista machine and it will keep the PC from entering sleep mode while playing the songs. After I play the last song, the PC will start the idle count down and then enter into sleep mode.
Do you see any problem with my intended use of a Mac Mini?

  • Mac mini as music server

I currently have a apple TV which serves as a music server, but the hard disk is getting to small and I can not use all the genius and DJ functions as with itunes on a mac. The itunes library sits on my mac pro. iphones and ipod are synchronized with my mac pro for apps and music. All (apple TV, iphones, ipods) are using the same itunes database.
If I replace the apple TV with a mac mini and store the itunes library on the mac mini harddrive or on a nas, can this itunes lib configuration also be used to sync the music on the iphones and ipods through the mac pro?
If so; which steps do I have to take in the systems prefs and itunes prefs?

  • Mac Mini as 600 cd Music Server - up to the task??

I have two 400 disc cd-changers that I am endeavering to replace with a Mac Mini. My wife bought me (bless her soul!) a 60gb core duo mini for Christmas. We have an iMac in our office and love the convenience of using Front Row with our 200+ iTune songs. We love it so much that we'd like to have the same convenience of perusing our cd collection in our living room - plus it would mean getting rid of two behemoth-sized CD-changers.
    My Question:
Is the mini and Front Row up to the task? I want to use the mini exclusively for music. Any problems with feeding nearly 600 cds into the drive of the mini? I plan on ripping nearly all CD's using Apple lossless encoding (I'm an audio geek). ..I know that I will have to buy an outboard hard-drive (probably a 500GB LaCie).
Secondly, any good recommendations for a cheap monitor? Since I will only be using this to select music, create playlists, etc.. it need not be top tier in terms of resolution, etc.. That said, I would like it to be flat and slim so as to fit on the table next to our stereo system.
Many thanks to all readers/ responders!

Firstly, thank you all responders. ..Your input was indeed considered.
Well, I did exactly as I endeavored and turned my new Mac mini into a music server. So far so good. A few comments regarding the process:
Expanded capacity: I purchased a LaCie 250GB and directed iTunes to store all music on it. It works flawlessly. My concerns that Front Row would function sluggishly due to using an outboard drive and due to the sheer size of the library were unfounded. So far, I have not had a single mishap.
Monitor: Though I would have preferred something in the 6-10" range, the smallest I could find was a 15" Envision for $79 (after $120 mail in rebate). Though a bit ostentatious for my modest digs, it works great.
Outboard CD-Rom/ DVD Drive: Acting on the advice of an employee at an Apple store, I elected to use an outboard CD-Rom drive rather than extract the 600 cds using the integrated drive on the Mac Mini. For $70, it seemed like a good idea. ..Easier to replace an outboard drive, than have to ship the Mini back for service.
One small problem encountered: After hooking the whole thing up and playing a few tracks back, I noticed that if I held my ear close to my speakers (Vandersteen 3A Sig), I could hear a faint hum from the tweeter. Dang, a ground loop. ..Thankfully, a $15 ground loop filter from Radio Shack took care of the problem without any harmful affects on the sound.
For >$1000, I now have a very cool music server that I expect to have great fun playing with. ..Good luck to any who might do the same.

  • Mac Mini as Music Server kinda

OK i feel like this is a kinda complicated question that requires someone who knows what they are talking about so i appologize.
Alright i have an external harddrive 1349(800/400) and usb2 and a airport express and a powerbook. And i am wondering if i could connect the ext. hd to the a mac mini and use file sharing to create an alias of the music folder on the hard drive on the mac mini (this i know will work as i already do it on my powerbook) but i want to go further and use file sharing to create an alias of this same folder on the powerbook. Then theoretically i can play my music from the external hd through a mac mini over an airport express and control it from either the powerbook or mac mini.
I am not sure if anyone will even understand this or understand my vision but if you can confirm that this will work (like absolutely) then that would be much appreciated. I guess one hitch is that it might be slow and skip even if it worked but im not sure.
    Thanks!!!

'1349' is firewire in apple terminology.
Use fire wire over USB 2 if you can, USB needs the processor to intervene in the transfer process taking away system resources, FireWire does not.
as Jan Jaap Kikkert said sharing music with iTunes is easy.
iTunes is a streaming music server already (On your network only), all you have to do is select share music and look for shared music and pick a name for the shared volume and the music on the one computer will show up in the iTunes of the other (As a separate ejectable volume {with the name you gave it} in iTunes left pane) , as well as the play lists if you expand it.
You will be unable to rename or alter the mounted play lists or music this way though. and you have to leave iTunes running to act as a server for the stream and to listen for requests.
Each computer can listen to different songs at the same time if you want.
Also will share between windows computers (Running iTunes) and Macs transparently.
As mentioned the advanced tab will let you set the iTunes Library folder to another drive.
Does it work, actually I was already doing it before I read your post and is playing now (But through a wired network) and

  • Has anyone had difficulty with music server software on the mac mini

Hello all. I'm using my newly purchased mac mini as a music server and for movies integrated into my sound system. I have 2 handmade tube amps hooked up to a CJ tube pre-amp, running a Neko audio DAC mkII via a silflex mini toslink cable made by lifatec, from the optical out jack of the mac. I'm using audirvana plus software, which allows me to play uncompressed music files directly into my external dac bypassing the internal dac of the mac. CDs sound very good, the mac runs very quietly, and the optical connection seems very clean. HD tracks sound exquisite.
Took me a while to figure out how to set the systems preferences, but after a few days of trial and error I finally got it right. The low jitter of the optical out is a reality. Audiophile quality is now easy and cost efficient with the mac mini.

    Well, I do understand that.
However, I've installed iMS 5.2 on win2k several times (I admit, w2k pro, not server), and i've never installed AD.
If you can get it installed and working for your default domain, but not for other domains, then most likely it has nothign to do with AD or AD domains. iMS idea of domains is very different from AD's idea of domains. We need to be very clear about such.
for iMS, you have to create additional domains through Delegated Admin, as either "Hosted Domains" or as "Vanity Domains". We do not suggest using "Vanity Domains", and support for such is deprecated.
Once you have created "Hosted Domains" through Delegated Admin, you can add users to those domains, and they should work, just fine.

  • In relation to Wireless Speakers, what does 'Connected Music Server' mean?

    Hello All,
Need some advise. I am looking at purchasing a Wireless speaker. I currently have a MacBook Pro 10.8 which has my music stored in iTunes. My phone is an Android 4.2.2 device.
Therefore, I need to buy a wireless speaker that supports AirPlay (aka stream music from my MacBook Pro) and also has an app that I can install on my Android device which can threby access the iTunes playlist so that I can use my phone as the remote control.
Based on the above requirements, I narrowed down my chocie to the Denon Cocoon Home (whose app is also Deno Cocoon) and the Pioneer A4 XW-SMA4-K (whose app is Pioneer ControlApp)
    Question 1:
    The Denon App says this:
    - When connected to your home Wi-Fi network you can further expand your choice of music by using the Music Server to browse and play all the music that is stored on your PC, Mac or Network Attached Storage (NAS) drive.
    - DRM protected music is NOT supported by the Denon Cocoon app (or any 3rd party music app)
My question what does one mean by a 'connected music server?' If an AirPlay speaker receives iTunes music, does it automatically become a 'connected music server?' Technically, is music in my iTunes app (some purchased from iTunes store, some imported) considered DRM protected music? Can ithe app read the iTunes music given the above contraint?
    Question 2:
The Pioneer App has a lot of complicated lingo that says:
    Network Audio Player
    - Browse and select music files on your connected music server
    AV Receiver
    - Browse and select music files on your connected music server
    Network CD Receiver System
    - Browse and select music files on your connected music server
    Wireless Speaker
    - Volume up/down
    - Select Internet Radio Stations
    - PUSH PLAYER
It uses one app for multiple devices and in the app description has a breakdown for what the app supports for every device. Now the 'connected music server' is not mentioned in 'Wireless Speaker' but the same is mentioned in 'Network Audio Player' so what does that mean?
I am more veered towards the Pioneer speaker as it costs $100 less and has better reviews but I will go with the one that will aloow me to use my Android phone as a remote control to access the music that the speaker is streaming from my MacBook pro.

  • Itunes on PC as music server, library on a NAS and Airplay amplifier

    Hello everybody,
I am putting in place a music server based on I-Tunes, actaully installed (prototype stage) on a quiet laptop.
I want to keep my media file on a NAS, hardwired to the network. So I will declare I-tunes library on the NAS.
The NAS will be connected to an Airplay compatible amplifier, which is visible from Itunes (Loudspeakers).
    My question:
    - When selecting a song from Itunes with the laptop, is the data flow going directly from the NAS to the Airplay amplifier (both hardwired) or does it have to go through the laptop (WIFI)?
    Thank you for your help!
    Dominique

It says: "Important: Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats)".
The Mac can read (and write) Windows formatted disks.
As your iPod is Windows formatted, and you want to copy from PC to Mac, that shouldn't be a problem.
If you have your complete library on your iPod , you can also use a third party application like 'Senuti' (freeware) or 'ipodRip' (shareware) to transfer the contents of your iPod to the Mac. Your playlists on your iPod probably will be saved too.
Do a Google search for the applications to find the URL's (they will probably be first on the list).

  • Connecting my MBP to a amplifier and projector to use as music server

    Hi,
I plan on using my MPB as a music server with my hi-def audio system.
I would like to know if the DVI out also supports sound? How can I use my MBP to play all the tunes through the amplifier to my audio setup and also project via my projector so I can surf the net using a BT keyboard and mouse?
The A/V receiver in question is the Denon 3808 and the projector is Panasonic AE-2000.
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks.
    Best Regards,
    Aditya

short answer, the DVI out port on your mac doesn't carry any sound data. for that you will have to use the headphone jack with adapters if your amp needs a different type of plug.
if you're really serious about the sound quality, you should consider an external USB box. there are many out there that work well with mac osx. i can't think of any off the top of my head, but a quick google search for "USB external sound mac osx" would bring up a few good results.
    hope this helps, D

  • Music server

    Hi friends,
I have two Mac - an Imac in one room, and a Mac Mini in another. My question is now, what should I do in order to consolidate the I- tunes library of both computers in one central location, e.g. a seperate harddrive ..I would like to be able to use this central I-tunes database as the music server for both computers, i.e. to be able to access the music archive from each computer, wirelessly and to play it via my hifi system... Do you also have any experience re which ripping file-tuype gives the most audiophile and "true to the original CD" result..?
    Cheers
    Thomas

Apple Lossless format will reduce the AIFF file by about 50% and give you "true to the original CD result".
That said - it is up to your own ears which format and size is best for your ears. .m4a, .mp3., Apple Lossless. I use 160 bit rate .mp3 and am satisfied. The same size file in an .m4a will give you a higher quality sound for the same space.
You can get a large ext HD and put all the tunes on that HD and create a new iTunes library.
I like the option of using an TV and connecting it via HDMI to my AV receiver. I can use either my MBP or the TV as a source for the tunes being played. All wireless.

  • After installing Mavericks I can't copy music files to an external music server, worked fine before mavericks

After installing Mavericks, I can't copy or move files to a music server running Vortexbox(Fedora Linux based). I get a cannot perform operation, you do not have permissions for some items. The permission arrow in get info shows I have both read and write permission. I am connecting to the server fine, just can't copy files.

    Hey tamckellar,
It sounds like you want to move your iTunes Media folder. The following article outlines how to do so:
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
If your hard drive is nearly full after loading all your music and other media into iTunes, or if you just want to move all those music and media files to another hard drive on your system, here's a way to make the move while retaining all your playlists, ratings, and play history.
    Thanks,

  • Music Server Can't See External Drive Formatted for WIN with Disk Utility.

Is there any reason an external drive formatted for WIN (MS-DOS(FAT)/FAT32 or NTFS w/ NTFS-3G/MacFUSE) with Disk Utility would not work for intended purpose? I have a music server (Bryston BDP-1) that uses an attached USB drive for storage/playback of music and can only read FAT32 or NTFS formatted drives. I've tried both and neither is readable by the BDP-1, yet I have no problem reading/writing to the supplied 2GB Thumb Drive (FAT32), as well as another 2GB Thumb Drive (FAT32). Get Info shows; "FAT32" for all drives formatted as such.
Note: From what I'm told the BDP-1 uses a scaled down version of Linux for it's OS. Isn't that UNIX? Shouldn't it be compatible (Read/Write) with other platforms (i.e, Mac)? Bryston says the reason they use it because it's Open-Source. Does Linux only work FAT32 or NTFS?
I do have Fusion/XP, also access to WIN PC's, but I just hate to use it when I shouldn't have to. It makes no sense why the drive can't be read by the BDP-1 when formatted for WIN under OS X.
And there was one other issue, after the third try to format fro WIN the external drive suddenly began making faint clicking sounds instead of a spinning drive sound only when plugged into BDP-1 USB port. But it works fine when connected to iMac FW.
    HW Specs:
    Drive: G-Drive Mobile USB/FW 750GB

    Exchanged drive. Works now.

  • OS X Server install on Mac Mini.

    Hi,
I"m looking to do a clean install of OS X Server on my Mac Mini. Wanted to get some input on how to best partition and setup my hard drives. For now server will be mostly used as a fileserver, music/video streaming. I may eventually start playing around with ical server, etc.
Mac Mini ,2.53 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo,dual 500 GB drives, 4 Gb memory
    1.5 Tb external Firewire drive.
1.5 Tb external USB drive - data backup using Time Machine
I was thinking about the following:
Setup 100 Gb partition on each drive and turn on RAID mirroring, install OS X on that partition. Remaining space on those drives will be used as individual partitions for data.
Install OS X on firewire drive and backup OS partition once installed. Can I get away with using Disk Utility or should I use other software?
    Thanks!

I use Carbon Copy Cloner, Synchronize! Pro X, and Time Machine. I no longer use any of the myriad of other backup schemes that have not worked as well for me over the years.
When I first get a machine, the first thing I do is assign a new large capacity backup for that machine.
    So :
( 1 ) I buy something like a 1 TB backup drive, select it at the finder level (hit return to put its name in the edit mode) and rename it something like NewBackupDrive.
( 2 ) use CCC to make a bootable backup from Macintosh HD ---> NewBackupDrive
( 3 ) boot from the NewBackupDrive to make sure it is working
( 4 ) Now we can partition the main internal drive Macintosh HD
My last iMac came with a 640 GB drive, so when I used Disk Utility, and selected 6 partitions, it neatly worked out that the size of each partition was 106.69 GB, which for my needs was perfect. This gave me plenty of expansion capacity. You can adjust to fewer partitions if you need more capacity for each partition. Once you partition, write down the size of each partition, so you can partition the backup drive similarly.
Using Disk Utility I select six and name them as follows. I dont use spaces on any directories that I might need to use the Terminal with, since it makes it easier using unix without dealing with spaces in paths.
    Drive_1
    Drive_2
    Drive_3
    Drive_4
    Drive_5
    Drive_6
    ( 5 ) use CCC to make a bootable backup of NewBackupDrive ---> Drive_1
( 6 ) use CCC to make a bootable backup of NewBackupDrive ---> Drive_6 (redundant, but good),
this way over the coming days, or weeks, as I begin rotating backups from
    Drive_1 ---> Drive_2
    Drive_1 ---> Drive_3
    Drive_1 ---> Drive_4
    Drive_1 ---> Drive_5
it will be last one over-written. Once you get to (Drive_1 ---> Drive_6), you can choose to use it, or skip over it and leave it pristine if you wish. Anyway for now, I would protect myself by doing steps ( 5 ) and ( 6 )
( 7 ) Boot from Drive_1, set your preferences, install any applications you will need, copy whatever you need and get the primary drive for the most part fully loaded with your data, so that it is fully functional.
( 8 ) Armed with the sizes of the partitions (should be one size if you made all partitions the same size), we can run Disk Utility, and partition to the same number of partitions as the main drive plus one. In my case that makes the number of partitions seven. The last one will be much larger and used for Time Machine.
In my case the first six partitons will be 106.69 GB, leaving 358.86 GB tor TM_1 which is the Time Machine partition.
    Max_1
    Max_2
    Max_3
    Max_4
    Max_5
    Max_6
    TM_1
In my case I use a Guardian Maximus (raid level 0) with dual 1 Terabyte disks that do hardware level redundant backups. If one disk dies, the other one will continue working, the diagnostic lights will warn you to replace the faulty disk, and when you place the new disk in the slot, it will automatically be backed up by the good disk. I will become a mirror image of the good disk...
I have used many schemes over the years, including databases, spreadsheets, etc. What I use now is a simple notebook that I keep with each of the workstations, and servers that basically show the following :
    CCC 2010.09.08 Drive_1 ---> TM_4 Upgraded to OS X Server 10.7.4
    CCC 2010.09.08 Drive_1 ---> Drive_4 Upgraded to OS X Server 10.7.4
CCC 2010.09.15 Drive_1 ---> TM_5 Completely Rearranged the Web Server Structure
    CCC 2010.09.15 Drive_1 ---> Drive_5 Upgraded to OS X Server 10.7.43
    SyncProX 2010.09.15 Drive_1/Server ---> TM_1/Server
    Best of Luck...
