Music Sorting by genre

Wondering if people here are sorting by genre and how, im looking for a way to sort by genre and then sub-genre. but of course finding difficulties doing that since most bands belong to a wide variety of genres. im looking to this using, Genre - Grouping - Artist, in Column browser.
I'm doing this in a non purist way. simply doing this to find my music the best as i can. example: Metal - Death Metal - Bandname... easy. but when organizing Indie rock or Alt. Rock, Hardcore, Goth... it pretty much all belongs to Punk rock in origin. then i'll have way too many bands under that genre of music. defeating the whole purpose of doing this.
Anybody got screens, of genre - grouping - band in itunes. i could of course, go through every single band in my collection find some vague similar genres too be able to group them under the same genre. must be a more simple way of doing this, or at least a little less time consuming.
idea. Alternative Rock - Indie Rock - band. and group things like indie pop, indie rock and grunge under Alternative Rock? even though Alt. rock really has its roots in post punk or punk rock, i would still have Punk and as a separate genre grouping things like emo, hardcore, punk revival under there. i want to hear your Genre- Grouping sort.
ps. in my collection i have everything from The Killers to Cannibal Corpse to KMFDM to Buck 65 to Micheal Jackson to Herbie Hancock. and those are only the names i think majority will regognize. about 300 artist overall. in most genres.
psII. yes i overly obsessive abotu things like this. and no i dont jsut do Rock, Classical, Jazz, World Music. cause then like 230 artists would be under Rock. and it wouldnt help me find peticular artists.
I'm sry about spelling mistakes. english is not my first language.

I was having a similar problem -- but noticed it only happened on albums where the "Album Artist" was not unique (such as when it was listed as "Various Artists" or "Unkown".   When that happened, no matter what I did, the genre did not sync correctly to the IPhone.
My solution was to change the "Album Artist to something unique (mostly I used the name of the album in that field) and resync'd my IPhone.  Suddenly the genre was sync'd correctly between Itunes and the IPhone.
Hope that helps...

  • ITunes 11 - How do you Sort by Genre then Artist? Other General Customizations

    Hello,
Maybe somebody else knows how to do this, if so please post it. I am really disappointed in iTunes ever since version 10 I think, where they majorly revamped the whole look for it. No, I am not one of those people who are opposed to change and are slow to adapt when changes are made to applications either. I just feel these new changes majorly suck.
So I am using version 11, the latest one. Apple has made it so uncustomizable that it is ridiculous. Correct me if I am wrong in saying this, that you can’t do any of this stuff anymore. When I open iTunes I like to be able to select Genres and then have the music within the Genre sorted by artist. I don’t see how you can do this anymore. Now when you click on Genre there is no longer an option to sort anything. Everything is sorted by CD Name and you aren’t allowed to sort it any other way. Seriously, who really knows the name of every CD they own, especially when you have several 100 CDs?
So if I want to view my music by artist I have to select Artists, which that lists all artists (regardless of genre).  I hate this because then it is harder to find the exact artist you are looking for because the list is that much longer and you are scrolling through a ton more artists just to get to the one you are looking for. Yes, I already know there is a search library feature. I also like viewing the artist by Genre because it is easier to determine if the newly added CD was placed in the correct Genre. I know some people just add music and don’t care where it is placed or how it is organized, but I like to keep it all organized. I even have it organized on my computer by folders Genres, folders Artists, and then folders CDs.
This is the same for viewing your Playlists. You used to be able to select your playlists and then view a specific genre within that playlist. From there I could sort the playlist however I wanted, like by artists, and then CD. I have several playlists that have more than one genre in it. With this new version you can’t view your playlist by genre, you can only view all of the songs within the playlist.
I also liked in the old version how you could view the number of songs in each genre. Well, you can still do this once you click on the genre, but there isn’t an overview anymore. Like in the old version it would list all the genres and then in a caption underneath each genre it would show how many songs and different artists are in each genre. There was no need to go into each individual genre to view this information. You could also view the number of songs in each genre within each playlist as well.  The playlist thing has been removed altogether. Now you can only view how many songs are in the playlist, regardless of genre.
The new version does have a few tiny benefits, like easily being able to see what playlist(s) a particular song is in by right clicking on a song and then selecting Show in Playlists. I however, don’t feel the tiny tweaks outweigh the view customizable benefits of previous versions. These new tweaks could have easily been added to the older versions without disabling the customizable view settings.

I had a similar problem: I wanted to synch my playlist to my iphone. I like to have my playlist sorted by genre. But under each genre, albums are not sorted by the track numbers. This is a problem, especially when I am listening to club mixes when the DJ smoothly transitions from 1 track sequentially to the next one. Under the properties of each audio file, the Track Numbers and Disc Numbers are already there.
My perfect solution was to turn On Sorting - Sort Album under View>Show View Options. Then, select all the songs in that album (Shift click, Cmd click, etc) , and Edit multiple item information (Cmd I). You will see Info-Video-Sorting-Options buttons. Click on Sorting. Then, under Sort Album, Enter the name of the album. Then OK.
You should now have the playlist sorted by Genre, then each album individually sorted by track numbers. On your playlist you should see, if you scroll right, the column added called "Sort Album".
    Hope this helps.

  • How can I see my classical music sorted according to composers - individual works - performers ?

How can I see my classical music sorted according to composers - individual works - performers ? This is much more useful than sorting according albums.
I have tried using the Grouping tag, writing Composer - Work - conductor there. But if I make a smart playlist, showing only Genre: "classical" and sorting according to Grouping, I see a line for each part in every work: one line for each movement of Mahler's 4th Symphony performed by George Solti, for instance.
What I am looking for is a way so that there is ONE line for each PERFORMANCE, ie, one line for Mahler's 4th Symphony performed by George Solti, below that one line for Mahler's 4th Symphony performed by William Mackerras, and so on.
Anyone found the golden solution? :-)

How can it be possible because the resoution of my video source is the same before and after conversion process ... thanks to my ADSL Box and my PS3 the video is ok ... not with ATV ...
Could you please give me the resolution I should have for my video in SD or HD720 ?

Is there another way to convert my video for iTunes instead AVS Video Converter ?

  • Music Sorting in iOS 7.1 (Issue)

I know some people hated it, but iOS 7.0.x sorted music in the Music app by release date which I thought was awesome. Sorting by name also makes sense, so there's no reason why there shouldn't be an option for either. In iOS 7.1.x, the Music app continues sorting by release date, but in descending order (i.e. newest is always at the top of the list) rather than ascending (newest is always at the bottom of the list).
This method of sorting seems utterly useless to me (why is there an implicit assumption in this design that I want the newest music of an artist at the top?), and now I can't just listen to an artist's entire discography in order, which I was thoroughly enjoying before this afternoon's update.
I would VERY much like to see an option within the preferences for the Music app to sort albums by artist in ascending order (oldest album of an artist at the top, and newest at the bottom) as well as by name (in case someone doesn't care about release dates). I shouldn't have to make a playlist to play an artist's discography in order on my phone, especially when I don't have to do that on my computer.

  • Music Sorting

Alright, this is my first post here, and I don't own an ipod yet, but this question has been on my mind since I started considering which ipod I should buy. Now, I'm a freak for music organization, what genre, which band, which subgenre, and I was wondering: If I put a song onto my ipod once, could I have it listed under several catagories, such as:
    Piano
    - Gary Jules - Mad World
    Sad Songs
or would I have to upload it twice, and place the file multiple times, for every folder or catagory I want it in? I hope this makes sense, and I hope someone can help me with this. Thanks.

I believe a playlist is just a reference to the actual song. As far as bytes go, a playlist is very small. So if you had one song in three playlists, it wouldn't be taking up as much space as three songs. It would just take up the space required for that song, and maybe a little bit more for refrencing that song to three playlists.

  • Music Sorting in S^3

A suggestion for an update to the music player. The music library needs to have an option to sort the music by albums also apart from Artists.
Not everyone organises their music by artists and most Indian music is generally sorted yb Albums. S60 used to have this option but don't understand why this was taken away in S^3

  • Music sorting in iOS7

Is there a way to change the way Music sorts? In IOS 6 it was sorted by artist, then each album was sorted, and you were able to click on a particular album, in IOS7 every album for an artist is in release date order, and its a pain having to scroll through all the albums when you only want one.

  • Downloading Music Into the Genre Fold

I have a Zen Sleek, and while I love it, I have a small problem with it. I listen to a lot of Opera and Broadway Musicals. And I would like to be able to download an Opera or Musical in the Genre area as a whole CD and not individual songs. As it stands now, when I download a CD it breaks it up in the genre folders by the artist who sang it. I don't want that. I want to be able to download an opera into the genre folder as a whole CD and not by artist. Is there a way to do that? Thanks.

If you have one CD/album featuring lots of artists, each artist will be listed separately in Genres for the tracks they have sung. It sounds like perhaps you should make sure each track on the CD has the same 'Album' tag and then browse by 'Album' not 'Genre', where you will then get a whole list of tracks on that album in order of track number.

  • Sorting by genre trouble

Have a trouble sorting my music in iPhone by Genre.
Got a lot of randomly selected "Unknown genre" folders. But in iTunes everything is ok. Everything is tagged properly.
Furthermore, sorting by album works fine, but new albums of existing artists downloaded since last iOs update - shown as different artists with the same name.
I.e. the last album of Morcheeba shown like an separate artist of all the other albums (which are organized in one artist).
    Does anybody have such troubles?

  • Sort by genre?

    Hi.
I didn't find anything about this when I searched so I just gave it a go.
The thing is that everyone knows that when you import music to iTunes it also sorts it by putting it into the "MUSC -> ARTIST -> ALBUM" folders on your hard drive (if you choose it to do so). I wonder if there's a way to get it to sort the folders by "GENRE -> ARTIST -> ALBUM"? I read somewhere that there was a script for this on Doug's AppleScripts, but I never found one when I looked at that page.
    Thanks in advance.

I agree Winston, everyone and his cat has a video recording device of some kind and just organising home videos would be justification for better organisational features.
It's still to be determined about encoding your own 5.1 but there are more and more camcorders now that purport to produce a 5.1 surround soundtrack - no idea how good they are but it's osmething consumers will increasingly want for purely legal reasons.
    As an aside, seen elesewhere:
Ok, I managed to get Dolby Digital from a Video file. The steps are very easy:
Create an mp4 from your DVD or other source with Handbrake or Visual Hub - Audio Settings are not important
If you are ripping a DVD then open Mac the Ripper, choose Chapter extraction, open streams and select the Audio File you want to be extracted
You will now need Quicktime Pro
Open both files (the mp4 and the ac3) in Quicktime. Copy the ac3 stream and paste it to the mp4 file
Save the file as a MOV movie
    Import it in iTunes
    That was it!!!
I am now trying to figure out how to extract ac3 audio from mkv files...

  • ITunes - Sort by genre to copy to ext drive?

How can I sort my albums by genre to copy these onto an external USB drive as mp3s?  When I go to my 'music' folder to copy the albums, there is no 'genre' heading when I want to arrange the music.  Any ideas?

My MUSIC folder contains subfolders by ARTIST, and in these, I need to drill down into each one to be able to select the GENRE.  The GENRE option doesn't seem to be viewable at the top level, which is where I need it:

  • ID3 Tags and Music Sort

My mp3 ID3 tags are all messed up here and there. As I fix them in MediaSOurce, the "file" stays where it is and cannot be moved to where it belongs (in the appropriate folder). Any idea on how to move files around that are on the player?

Not sure if this is the same thing the OP is talking about, but I have a similar problem with my Zen Xtra. Mediasource doesn't seem to want to let me edit tag info (except track number) for music that's on the player- which gets annoying if I'm trying to correct the genre for something or combine entries for "Smashing Pumpkins" and "The Smashing Pumpkins." The only workaround I've found is to edit the tags for the files on my hard dri've, then re-transfer them to the player, which I'm usually too lazy to do. Is there some more efficient way to do this?

  • On Music app using Genre option the "Shuffle All" no longer really shuffles all??

Since the newest iOS update while playing music on my iPhone 4S using the Genre option I no longer have the option to Shuffle everything in that genre. The Shuffle option only shuffles each artist's songs in that genre. Same on my iPad now, too! Is it actually now not an option or just hidden somewhere?

OK, problem solved!! -- can't believe it took 2 wks to figure this out . . . Just submitted a request to Apple . . . here it is:
    ===
In Safari ( & Mail) Prefs > "Advanced" we thought the 2nd checkbox down could enable-disable the ability to use the Tab key to skip around only to Text Fields.
The functionality we were looking for actually resides in Sys Prefs > Keyboard Shortcuts . . . at the radio button at the bottom of the window . . . *Could the functionality be put in the Safari > Prefs > Advanced ??? *
    * We couldn't figure this out for about 2 weeks . . . was pretty frustrating; esp. for a long-time user like me who really is into keyboard commands! Safari was tabbing to every single button on the page, which slowed down productivity . . .

  • IPhone music sorted incorrectly

Since enabling iTunes in the Cloud, my music is sorted incorrectly on my iPhone. Albums starting with "S" will appear under "T", for instance.
Even after disabling iTunes in the Cloud, the problem persists. I've tried synching my phone, to no avail.
See the attached photo for an example.

First off, thank you for the screenshot, users fail to post these and it helps out a ton.
The only thing that stjmps me is Truthfully Truthfully is sorted under V.
I switched to my albums tab on my iPhone and I have songs like "The You Asked..." which is sorted under Y because it ignores "The."  I also have a song "The Wa.." sorted under W, which is again, ignoring "The" before it.  I don't think there is any problem here, it's just the way it's sorted.
Are you having this issue with your songs tab or artists?  What about playlists?

  • IPhone Music Sorting - Album year field

    Hi
I originally posted the below in the iPhone section, but I think it may be more appropriate here.
I have a selection of radio shows and podcasts that I want to sort into a certain order on my iPhone, but no matter what I do in iTunes I cannot get them to display correctly.  Here's what I have done so far:
    1. Split the 'songs' into 'albums', with one album for each series/ group of podcasts.
    2. Made sure that all of the 'songs' are correctly labelled in the 'info' tab.  The following is the same for all songs:
         - Artist
         - Album Artist
         - All other fields are blank (with the exception of 'Year' which I will come on to later)
    3. Changed the 'Album Sort' field on the 'Sorting' tab so that the albums are sorted in chronological order and the actual title of the 'album' is ignored.  e.g.:
         - XFM Series 1 (from 2001) is labelled as 'A' in the 'Album Sort' field
         - XFM Series 2 (from 2002) is labelled as 'B'
         - XFM Series 3 (from 2003) is labelled as 'C'
         - XFM Series 4 (from 2004) is labelled as 'D'
         - Radio 2 shows (from 2005) are labelled as 'E'
Doing the above gets the albums to display perfectly in iTunes, with them being sorted in chronological order as dictated by the 'Album Sort' field.
I then synced the albums onto my iPhone and expected all to be well, but instead found that when I went to the 'Artists' tab they were listed in reverse chronological order (newest album first).  So to fix this I went into iTunes and tried the following:
    1. Went into the 'info' tab for all albums and set the year to 2001 for all.  As the year is the same for all it should now sort by 'Album Sort' in theory.  That didn't work though so I tried...
    2. Set the years in reverse order for each album, so that the latest series 'Radio 2 shows' was labelled as 2001, and the oldest album 'XFM Series 1' was labelled as 2005.
That still didn't work, but even more strangely when I view the album on the iPhone a different year is being displayed under the title, e.g.:
    XFM Series 3
    12 Songs, 686 mins
    2006
I have checked that album in iTunes and 2006 is not contained anywhere on the album or song info tabs.  I have tried to add a different year in the year field, and also delete the year field, but no matter what I do 2006 continues to be displayed.
Where is this year being held within the file and how can I change it?  I checked the ID3 tags for a song from that album in VLC and could not see 2006 referenced anywhere.
    Thanks for any help!

    Hello,
As far as I can see, you can't sort the order of music on the iPod Touch. It is always sorted alphabetically.
Maybe you can suggest that as a feature to Apple.
