Music sorting inconsistently by artist

When I sort by artist sometimes they are listed by first name and sometimes by last name. For example: for Eric Clapton some are listed under E and sometimes under C. I checked the info and even retyped the artist name and it didn't seem to make a difference. It doesn't really matter which way it is done, I'd just like all of one artist to be together when I sort them by artist.  I'm using version 11.0.2.26
Thank you,
Maya

Not long after I posted this I figured it out. When I went into Info I saw there is a sort tab. I cleared all of those and everything is the way I want it.

1, you can't at the moment, though with iOS 5 in the Autumn, from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :
Even organize your photos in albums — right on your device
2, by removing it from you synced from and re-syncing. Only photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad (either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view)
3, the location of the photos that you synced to the iPad should be listed on the iPad's Photos tab when connected to your computer's iTunes.
4, you can copy the photos from your iPad to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 . You should also be able to delete them from the iPad as part of the transfer process to your computer, and it's then your choice whether to add them to your sync photo list so as to copy them back to the iPad. Copying them to your computer would allow you to organise them into folders and therefore be able to sync them back into separate albums.
5, I don't use Dropbox either. There are some third-party browser apps in the iTunes App Store that allow you to download pages so that you can view them when offline e.g. Atomic Web (the whole page is saved within Atomic Web, it doesn't place a photo into the Photos app)
6, deleting content should help. If you remove an app from your iPad then you also remove the content that it's got on the iPad - so if you then decide to reinstall it back onto the iPad then you will need to manually add back any content that you want in it. None of the Apple built-in apps (including Photos) can be removed from the iPad

  • Within Music Library can anyone please explain why when I select the option to sort 'Album by Artist' a number of tracks are being treated as separate albums?  How can I correct this?  I have tried to 'drag and drop' but that doesn't work.

Within music Library can anyone please explain why after I select the option to sort 'Album by Artist' a number of tracks are being treated as separate albums?  How can I fix this?  I have tried to manually correct by 'drag and drop' individual tracks but that doesn't work.  My music library includes a number of repeat album artwork images simply because not all tracks are being listed under the one album making my library more difficult to use than it should.  Any advise would be appreciated.

  • Is there a way to sort albums under artists in the Music app?

On my iPhone, the albums under each individual artist are sorted from newest to oldest.  On the previous version of the iOS they were sorted oldest to newest.  Is there a way to change it back to show oldest to newest?  I like to listen to my albums in order.
When you go into your music app, select the artist, the Albums should be sorted from oldest release date to newest.  Right now, when I go into Pink Floyd it shows:
Wish You Were Here (1975), then it shows
The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), and finally
    Meddle (1971)
    Thank you.

If you find the music sorting order as annoying as I think most people do, let apple know at:

  • "Sort Artist" does not work on iPod / How to sort by album artist

I have many albums in my music collection that contain songs by different artists. In iTunes, I have set all these songs to the same "Sort Artist" so that they all appear under the same artist's name (the album artist's name).
However, when I sync my iPod, the "Sort Artist" settings don't carry over. For example, a compilation album with 10 songs by 10 different artists would show up under one single artist in iTunes (per my sort artist settings), but on the iPod the songs show up under 10 different artists. Is there any way to fix this problem? I basically want to sort my music by album artist, instead of just the artist.
The strange part is when I browse my iPod on my computer, the compilation albums are properly sorted under one artist, but it's still wrong when I browse on the iPod itself.

It could be that you have inadvertently imported these CDs into iTunes as part of a compilation. If so, the artists won't show in the artists menu on the iPod.
To check, highlight the tracks on one of the offending artists CDs in iTunes, right click and select "get info". This brings up a multiple song info window, and from there you can check if you have 'yes' in the box marked "part of a compilation".
If you have, select 'no' instead and click 'ok'. Do this with any CD that has this issue. This will alter the info in iTunes, and you should then connect your iPod and synchronize the changes.
The problem arises because the information contained on the Gracenote CD Data Base (where iTunes gets all it's album/artist/track info from), is sometimes incorrect. It can show CDs as compilations when in fact they are not.
You should also check that the songs have album name info in their ID tags.
See: Some songs don't show under artist on my iPod.
Once you add a second album name for that artist even for a single song, ALL the rest of the songs should now show up under that artist, even those without album names.
Providing the spelling for the artists is exactly the same of course.

  • Music Sorting in iOS 7.1 (Issue)

I know some people hated it, but iOS 7.0.x sorted music in the Music app by release date which I thought was awesome. Sorting by name also makes sense, so there's no reason why there shouldn't be an option for either. In iOS 7.1.x, the Music app continues sorting by release date, but in descending order (i.e. newest is always at the top of the list) rather than ascending (newest is always at the bottom of the list).
This method of sorting seems utterly useless to me (why is there an implicit assumption in this design that I want the newest music of an artist at the top?), and now I can't just listen to an artist's entire discography in order, which I was thoroughly enjoying before this afternoon's update.
I would VERY much like to see an option within the preferences for the Music app to sort albums by artist in ascending order (oldest album of an artist at the top, and newest at the bottom) as well as by name (in case someone doesn't care about release dates). I shouldn't have to make a playlist to play an artist's discography in order on my phone, especially when I don't have to do that on my computer.

  • How do I stop iTunes from automatically sorting by Album Artist?  Driving me crazy.

How do I stop iTunes from automatically sorting by Album Artist?  Driving me crazy.
I listen to primarily classical music
All of my music was very deliberatley titled by composers "Last Name, First Name" as the artist.
iTunes is changing it to the Album Artist.  I have to go in and delete that information - AND THEN IT LATER REVERTS IT BACK!!!
Hours have been wasted and I am feeling so ticked.
    Any help?

    Purchased or ripped media?
If these are ripped mp3s then another possibility is multiple embedded tags. iTunes works best with a single ID3v2.3 tag. Some software creates both an ID3v1.0 and IDv2.x tag. With multiple tags it is not certain which iTunes reads or which it updates, and any device may choose differently. Once songs have the correct info. in iTunes you can use Convert ID3 Tags... None several times, then Convert ID3 Tags... v2.3. The process removes any embedded art but otherwise preserves the data that iTunes knows. You could use my script CreateFolderArt before and after to save and then restore the artwork.
In the long run you may be better off populating Album Artist properly with a copy of whatever is currently in Artist. My script CopyArtistToAlbumArtist can do this effectively.

  • Sort album by artist or album by artist/year & compliations behavior

    I am running iTunes 10.4.1.10 on Windows 7 (64-bit)
I was wondering about the behavior of sort album by artist or album by artist/year. Instead of sorting solely by artist or artist/year, it seems to take into account album artist. Is this correct? Previous versions of iTunes (iTunes 7 and iTunes 8) used only the album and artist field not album artist. Is there anyway to force it to sort solely by artist and ignore album artist?
I am wondering because I currently use the album artist field to hold information about featured artists, featured instrumentalists, conductors, alternative band names, etc and reserve the artist field to describe the more generalized album artist. For me, this organizational scheme works better because my iPod does not feature offer any access to album artist. My current solutions are to roll back to iTunes 7 or 8 or change the sort album artist field for every entry which has information in the album artist field; neither of which are long term solutions.
Finally, I would like to group compliations (musical soundtracks, movie soundtracks, etc) where the artist might differ by album but still use the sort by album by artist to organize the rest of my music using List View. Is this possible?
I really wish iTunes provided more options for sorting music.
    Thanks!

Album Artist has been supported since iTunes 7 (7.1 I think) and normally takes preference over Artist when it comes to grouping tracks in iTunes. As you say the iPod Classic doesn't work quite the same way. You'll find my extensive thoughts on fixing things at http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/grouping.asp You might find that different vlaues of Group Compilations and Use Album Artists restore the view you were familiar with, otherwise it might be time to rethink the strategy.
If it is simply a mattter of swapping Album Artist with Artist then I can (and will) rustle up a script for that... It will end up on the list at http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/scripts.asp shortly. More complex rearrangements of properties are also possibe once you know what you want to achieve.

  • Music Sorting in S^3

A suggestion for an update to the music player. The music library needs to have an option to sort the music by albums also apart from Artists.
Not everyone organises their music by artists and most Indian music is generally sorted yb Albums. S60 used to have this option but don't understand why this was taken away in S^3

  • Music sorting in iOS7

Is there a way to change the way Music sorts? In IOS 6 it was sorted by artist, then each album was sorted, and you were able to click on a particular album, in IOS7 every album for an artist is in release date order, and its a pain having to scroll through all the albums when you only want one.

  • Music sorting issue with iPhone 4

My music  has always been sorted by Artist on iTunes and on my iPhone, not Album Artist. Just recently I did a restore and after syncing iPhone, the music is being sorted by Album Artist. iTunes is setup the same as it ever was. There are alot of songs that would need fixing to my liking if I had to manually switch each song.
    On a side note,
Just got a new iPhone 4 with my Black Tie and same issue, so two different iPhones, same issue.

1.) Tell Bluetooth to forget the UConnect Device
    2.) Repair to UConnect.
3.) When you go thru the pairing process, delete the old names of the phone and come up with a new name for the new pairing.
4.) Power down vehicle and Uconnect
5.) Power down the iPhone completly, hold down the top right hand button till you get the power screen then turn it off.  Leave it off for a touch, say 2 min.
6.) Hit home screen button or top right button and repower phone.
You should be able to connect with Uconnect again by bluetooth and you will have the same options as before with audio.

  • X2-05 music sorting issues

Hi! My X2-05 piles all my music in one list. It won't sort it by artist, album, etc. It just displays everything as "unknown". I know that's wrong, because I am very thorough when tagging music and when I play individual tracks the phone displays all the details beautifully.

    same here
in my case, it only filed one mp3 in the album folder
all the rest were "unknown" and unsorted

  • Turned "Sort by Album Artist" off on iPod Touch 5th Gen so individual artists on compilation albums will show up separately under "Artists" with no succuss.  This worked perfectly on my Ipod Touch 4th Gen.  Any Advice?

I have a 5th Gen iPod Touch.  It is running the latest iOS, and iTunes has the latest update.  I have many compilation albums that I imported from CD.  I want the individual artists and their associated song(s) to show up under "Artists."  I have turned off "Sort by Album Artist" in Settings.  This worked perfectly on my 4th Gen Touch.  Each artist from a compilation would show up under "Artists" with the correct song(s) showing, while still showing the whole compilation under "Albums."  Now, on my 5th Gen Touch, when I try to look at an artist from a compilation under "Artists,"  I get one of the following:  the correct artist and song, an incorrect artist and song, or an incorrect artist with the entire compilation album showing up.  Is this a bug in the new iOS 7, or am I doing something wrong?  Anyone else with this problem?  Any advice?

I have the same problem and I have been really trying hard to find a solution.  No success.
My main problem is this:  For example:  Top Gun soundtrack - I look at Kenny Loggins under artists and I see his albums and songs, plus the 2 songs from top gun.  Then when I look at Miami Sound Machine (also on top gun cd) under artist, I see correct albums from Miami sound machine, but under the top gun soundtrack, it shows the 2 kenny loggins songs instead.  then if I look at another artist from top gun cd, it continues to show the kenny loggins songs.  It doesn't matter which songs i look at, but the first one i start with will always show up on the others.  Funny thing is, if I click on the song, the correct song plays, it just says it is the kenny loggins song!!!  ha ha.   Been dealing with this for over a year now.  Pretty aggravating.   Happens whether I have compilations checked or unchecked on settings.   I have over 50 compilation albums and some are checked, some aren't...they all behave this way.
On Mac, itunes (v 12) it all shows up correctly and works fine.  I have become an expert on ID tags and am very thorough with my tagging.  HAND TAGGING, not some program that does it for you...they are never correct.  I match all my tag info with the info in the iTunes store for each album so it is sure to match.  Has taken a long, long, long time.
Love iTunes match, but this one issue is a real pain.  Anyone with any ideas, I'd love to hear them!  Thanks!

  • How can I make a smart playlist sort album by artist in order of size?

I'm trying to figure out a way to make a playlist of songs I generally like from a very large library to fit on my iPod. The songs aren't rated, and I don't want to have a totally random selection chosen by a smart playlist.
I thought a good way to pare down the list would be to sort album by artist, and then filter that list in order of the size that each artist takes up. It's more important to get rid of an artist that I don't like that also hogs a lot of space than one that maybe only has one track. I figure if I could scan down the list and exclude the worst offenders, it conceivably would make the task much simpler.

    I usually make two playlists.
One playlist with favorites I do want on the iPod and another smart playlist to fill the rest of the iPod. Just limit the size to th esize of the iPod minus wthe size of my iPod selection playlist.
