Music stops between songs?

There's a huge thread that tried to address this problem, but it's almost completely useless because of the myriad other problems mixed into the thread.
For three years, itunes has had problems playing my music.  In between songs, it hangs about 3 seconds into the next song, whether I'm listening directly on itunes or streaming to my AppleTV.  If I go next and back on the controls, that song will start playing, so the media is not corrupted.  I've patched every component in my setup for years, and it's never been fixed.  There are no errors or error logs to check (thanks Apple).  This problems comes and goes, but it almost always happens when I have guests over.
My library was on an external Hard Disk in a USB enclosure, which is a supported setup according to Apple, but I believe it's the source of my problems.  I moved my entire collection to the internal HD and the problem is now gone.
My theory, which seems to fit with a number of other people's set up and problems, is that some hard disks are set to 'spin down' after a couple of minutes to save energy.  When itunes tries to acces the next song, it times out waiting for the disk and just freezes.  I've tried to keep the disk spinning, but disk caching seems to defeat my methods.  If you have a NAS or external HD and have this problem, I believe that's the root cause.
If anyone else has a similar setup that wants to chime in, please do.  Keep in kind that this may be OSX specific, and that some external HDs may have a default spin down setting long enough to prevent the problem.  If you have a different problem with itunes, please don't flood this thread with variations unless they are relevant.

I have same issue. I have all music stored on a Network Attached Server (NAS) and I can upload new music to this location fine over my wireless network. I can also edit information about each song within iTunes, although I have to put up with a spinning beachball sometimes while iTunes is having a think.
I never had drops before, but now the audio cuts out even though the track is still playing - as seen from the progress bar in iTunes. So some information is being streamed but sadly not the audio portion - reliably at least. And the Aiprot signal is strong.
There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it:  bought downloads, files ripped from personal CDs or my mp3 rips from vinyl. Whatever the type of file, Airplay has an intermittent problem. In fact it's not just intermittent (cutting out at regualr times such as the end of each track). It's RANDOMLY intermittent. Sometimes you get a whole track without trouble, other times it drops every 3, or 10 , or 60 seconds.
It's like Apple have introduced a roulette plug-in to Airplay. Fun, huh?
It's incredibly frustrating given that a) I had no such issue with Airtunes on previous computers b) I just bought a new Macbook Pro and c) Apple market this functionality to consumers as part of a home entertainment set-up, and that's not really happening for me right now.  My set-up is effectively useless and my chance to impress dinner party guests has been blown (kidding).
At first I thought it might be a hardware issue with the Airport receiver inside my new Macbook Pro but that doesn't stack up: I have no other issues using my wireless network on the new laptop - as I say organizing music within iTunes or doing anything else wirelessly such as streaming from YouTube, works fine.
I do hope someone from Apple is listening because I think Airplay requires a patch. That's my hunch.

  • How do I get iPod to stop between songs?

How do I get iPod to stop between songs? A simple thing. I want to play a selection, then have the iPod stop, then select another song, have my iPod play it and stop, and so forth. What am I missing?

You aren't missing anything. Under normal playback conditions it isn't possible to do what you want.
The only way would be to put individual songs or selections of songs into playlists.

  • Streaming stops between songs

    Hello,
I am enjoying my AppleTV, but its streaming capability is sporadic.
It frequently stops streaming songs after a song completes. It may list the next song up, but it doesn't actually start playing it.
I have added an ethernet cable to it, to make its connection more solid. (And, today when it exhibited this behavior, I ran a connection test, and it passed at 6-10Mps).
So, if I am listening to an album, it may play 4 songs, and then stop playing at the end of the 4th song. I tried even going back and playing one of the previous songs (that it had played), and it would not play them.
    I do have Itunes Match.
Today, after this behavior showed up again, I did unplug it for a minute.  I haven't gone back to it since.
This is a latest generation unit, and the software has been updated. (I checked today - it is up to date.)
    Any recommendations?
    Thanks,
    Allan

I have the same problem.  Apple TV will only play 2 songs (shuffle, playlists, doesn't matter) and then gets hung up.  The only thing I have found that works is to unplug the Apple TV for 30 seconds or so.  But then I only get two more songs, so it's not really worth it!  Frustrating.

  • Music stops before song is finished

    Help,
On my itunes, I will be listening to music and before the song is supposed to be over it will just jump to the next song, Typically the song will have over a minute left and then just jump to next song in the playlist. I have hundreds of songs doing this and i do not know how to fix this.
    Running current version of Itunes
    Everything is up to date.
    Thank You,

All of the songs were purchased from iTunes. The new unit is  stopping songs that were problematic on the old unit (songs that were purchased 2 years or more ago) and is now stopping on some more recently purchased songs.
I just went back into iTunes and tried to play one of the involved songs on the laptop through iTunes. I rec'd the following message: "The song "xxxxxxxxx" could not be used because the original file could not be located. Would you like to locate it?" This is the 1st time I've ever rec'd this message and I receive it when I try to play any song from any playlist. I clicked on "Locate" I was taken to the System 32 file. I originally had iTunes on a desk top computer and transferred it over to my new laptop approx 6-7 months ago. Did something go wrong with the transfer?

  • Music stopping and starting, huge gaps between songs

I listen to music via Match daily.  Beginning last month I've been experiencing music stopping and starting, big gaps between tracks, and clunky behavior in general.  It's comes and goes but over the last week it's been terrible.  Is anyone experiencing this?  I have tried re-initializing match on my iPhone but it doesn't seem to work.

Go to Edit > Preferences > Playback. Turn off crossfading if enabled...
iTunes will attempt to play tracks that were recorded gaplessly without adding an artifical gap, it won't attempt to remove the gaps between tracks that were there in the original recording, unless you've enabled crossfade. You can't make it add gaps to what should be gapless transitons on the album. If you really need this you could make a playlist and include blank mp3s as a separator.

  • Got iTunes match, synced up music from laptop to phone, headed out listening to playlist, all of a sudden, mid-song, music stopped and all music was gone and needed to be re-downloaded

Ok, so I initially bought the cloud mainly in the hopes that I could store all of my music on it and have access to it on my phone, which ended up not being the case. Fine. So I man up and get iTunes match, sync everything up between my laptop and my phone, make a playlist and head out listening to it. All of a sudden while I'm out, mid-song, the music stops. I go to see what's going on and everything is gone and has the icon to download next to it, and now I'm away from my wifi to boot, so charges apply. I don't understand. Now I have iCloud on my phone with 25 GB Total Storage and 25 GB Available because I don't understand what I should be using it for and iTunes match which, what, only works when I'm within spitting distance of my laptop? I've tried to get everything sorted out, paying a fee each time, and hitting roadblocks every step of the way; and on top of it, my phone is constantly telling me it can't do this or that because I don't have enough storage?? I realize I'm a bit of a noob, but c'mon, it shouldn't be this complicated or difficult, should it?

If you have no network access (3G, Wi Fi) you cannot stream music from the cloud. Period. The way you stop the behavior is to enable 3G, or pre-download the tracks you think you will want to listen to.

  • TS1470 Downloaded songs stop mid-song in iTunes music library and on iPod.

I received the 'secure network connection could not be established' error message several times during a recent audio download.  I was able to eventually complete all of the downloads by going to the 'available downloads' area.  However, when I played back the downloaded songs, several of them ended mid-song although the complete songs appear to have successfully downloaded judging by the 'Time' (minutes) count for each song.  (Interestingly enough, the majority of the songs that stopped mid-song during playback were marked as having high popularity in the iTunes store.)
I've had this issue with previous downloads too.  I've been charged for and have paid for these songs, but didn't receive the full product in some cases.  It's very frustrating that I'm not able to enjoy these songs in their entirety.
Have other folks had this issue?  What is the resolution?

Something may have gone wrong with the index of the Music playlist. Download the current iTunes Free Single of the Week. I know it sounds odd, but it should fix the problem.
If that doesn't work close iTunes and delete the hidden file sentinel from inside the main iTunes folder, then start iTunes again. It should run a consistency check when it starts up.

  • Music stops after a few songs

I have this problem whether I'm streaming from the iPhone, the iPad or the MacBook Pro. After thre or four songs, the music stops (but is still playing on the device). In other words, the sound stops coming through the speakers.
I have ATV audio (for music streaming) hooked up to my A/V receiver via an optical cable.
If this can't be fixed, ATV is useless to me. Suggestions? Thx.

I have same issue to an ATV and a Airport Express. If I activate my iMac speaker the sound is there....disable iMac speaker and no sound to the ATV/Airport Express. I'm using a Apple Extreme.
    Clearly an Apple Issue

  • ITunes 10 - no way to stop music video, keep song playing?

In an earlier version of iTunes (not sure how old) there was an option to stop music video playback but continue playing the soundtrack, by keeping the video in the "Now Playing" artwork window. Now the only options are to play it in the viewer, in a separate window, the iTunes window, a separate window, full screen or full screen (with visuals) -- but NO option to stop the video altogether.
It doesn't seem like a big deal, but I don't want that video sucking up processing power when all I'm doing is listening to music while working. And I also don't want to cut videos out of my playlists altogether; that's not really a solution at all, just a workaround.
I seem to recall it was pretty easy maybe just clicking on the preview window? Now all that does is open the video in a new window (and closing that window stops the song.
SO -- any thoughts? Or is the option there somewhere and I just haven't found it? Thanks in advance!

Really!? No way to do this? It seems like such a waste. Do I REALLY have to open the videos in Quicktime Pro, export the soundtrack, import that into iTunes, and remove the videos from my playlist? Because that's the only way I can think of to work around this.
But it seems like such a hack.

You should be able to accept this message, it will cause existing music, photos (not camera roll) and videos (also excluding those in camera roll) to be removed and replaced with those from this computer. All other user data on the iPad will be unaffected.

  • Music suddenly stops mid-song

Lately, my iPod nano (gen 4) will stop in the middle of a song. I'll pick it up and advance to the next song and it will happen again. But here are the really odd things: first, only music stops, not pod casts or audio books; and second, so far this has happened only in my car (plugged into the audio port), not when it's plugged into exercise equipment. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be going on? Is the iPod nearing its end date?

You will probably need to quit iTunes when this happens since it may still have an active reference to a file on the iPod.
If you ever get a message telling you a disk is in use when you eject it, it is probably because a file on the disk is still open by an application. The best thing to do in this situation is quitting the programs that you think that used a file on that disk. This may be necessary because an application forgot to close a file.

  • Downloaded album but music stops playing about halfway through on each song...

I just downloaded an album from the iTunes store into my iTunes software on my PowerMac. I put the album into a playlist and began to listen. However, on each song the music stops playing about halfway through and then skips to the next song; it does it again and again on this album. What is the problem here? Did I do something wrong? Do I have to download the album again?
