Music stops with Etymotic earphones and undocumented feature in iPod

I have been using these Etymotic ER-6 with an iPod 4th generation without any problem, but after upgrading to an iPod Video, things have not been as smooth.
It seems that there is a new undocumented feature in the iPod Video. If you unplug your earphones, the music stops automatically. Which is great. The problem is that the Etymotic earphones have a 90 degree plug, prone to move sideways. When it moves, the music stops.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

Haven't had a "problem" with that feature as my connector is straight however, it would have been nice if they applied the same feature for "Dock Removal" so it pauses when lifted from a dock.

Yeah this "fix" is bunk. The movie is downloading just fine, but the extra features is the one giving me this error code. It is NOT my firewall. If it was, then both files wouldn't download. Plus, I already have the firewall "issue" tacked down and fixed. Have had it fixed for months now. No, this is due to the "new" itunes version 11 software. The only conclusion to fix this issue is UPgrading from 11 back to 10.7 which is what I am going to do. This is completely ridiculous! Come on, Apple, get itunes working once and for all, and fire the people responsible for itunes 11, just like you did to the guy who was responsible for apple maps. Thankfully Google came back to the rescue with google maps app.

You say the music is not on the external HD, the music list (iTunes?) is empty, and it is not on the iPOd. Then where is the music you want to move to the external HD?

Quite a few people seem to be having difficulty with getting WiFi with WPA2-PSK and WEP working on iPod ios4. I'd like to know if anyone does have this working. Please let us know iPod model, access point (router) model, and security settings on your setup. I'm reluctant to upgrade if I can't get WiFi because quite a few of my favorite apps need the net. I have:
1. brand new (not yet even initialized) 32GB iPod Touch
2. iPod Touch 8GB 3rd Gen
3. Netcomm gateway/router/access point with security set as noted above.

The easiest way to tell 2nd from 3rd gen is that 3rd gen has bluetooth (look in Settings/General -- if Bluetooth is there, your iPod is 3rd gen, if not it's 2nd gen or earler).

Thanks a lot to all who responded. I now have registered and upgraded my brand spanking new 32GB iPod Touch to ios4. Before I updated, I registered the new iPod, set up and checked the WiFi connection as described in my OP (except that it was AES - not WEP as noted above) and it worked just fine. I then updated to ios4 and it still worked fine, with no further input from me. It just connected as it should have after the update and all internet functions connect and work as expected.
To those who have had problems, my sympathy, but the problems are clearly not due only to ios4 -- there has to be something else going on with your connections.

CLI and undocumented features ...

... or confessions of an Xsan Newbie .... OK, so I've been using Xsan for six months now and trying my hardest not to use CLI and all that tricky Unix stuff .... finally realized that CLI might be the best friend an inexperienced Xsan Administrator could have ... so question becomes .... apart from the Man pages that are installed in the Xsan server folder (is it me, or this the most difficult technical document in the world to navigate around?) and the highly comprehensive descriptions (not) of the CLI commands in the Xsan Admin Guide .... where do you find good documentation on how to use the CLI? Which Unix commands are useful for managing Xsan?
Plus, I get the feeling from reading some of the StorNext documentation that there is much more to SNFS than meets the eye or that Apple is letting on. Is there anything that covers the undocumented features of Xsan that would be easy to understand by a simpleton like me?

Hi Neil,
There is a 3-day stornext course which I found very usefull.
For day to day use, the cvadmin command is your friend. So I suggest with studying on the man page for it. when you want to create and change volumes, you need more commands: cvlabel, cvmkfs, cvupdatefs, cvfsck.
These manpages are actualy acurate. I can imagine to be overwhelmed with all the options. At first you need to understand the context. The mentioned course will help you with this. This is complex material. You have to dive into it. There is no shortcut.
For tuning and creating a new volume the cvfs_config manpage is usefull.
For unix I suggest a good book and a course. Commands I use frequently:
+ mount -t acfs <volname> /Volumes/<volname>
+ umount /Volumes/<volname>
+ du -hs /Volumes/<volname> | sort -nr # to see the fillers of a volume
+ df -h # to see how full the volume is
+ grep # selecting specific info from a bunch of data
+ cat # display the content of a file
+ vi/pico # unix text editors
Also, check articles from apple.com and xsanity.com. There are loads of info there.
One major part of the xsan is the FC environment. You need to study that too. Qlogic has good pdf's. Setting up the nicknames and zoning right, is a must!

It sounds like you are constantly needing to restore your phone because it keeps going into recovery mode. Usually putting a device into recovery mode and restoring it can help isolate an issue to your iPhone hardware if an issue persists afterwards. I would try manually putting it into recovery mode and restoring it 1 more time:

Opening PDF in browser using Adobe API - with mark up and comment features

Hey,
Here is the scenario :   Firstly, the user has to review the file (say pdf) before approving it. I would like to open the pdf file in the browser directly for reviewing. Also, I want to add some mark up (sticky notes, etc) and comment features while reviewing. Using these features, the user can pin point the mistakes directly in the file and revert the file for changes if any.
And as part of implementation, I would like to use Adobe java API to do the same. But I couldn't find any code snippets for using this API.
Any kind of help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My ipod says it's synced with another computer and will erase my ipod, i dont want my ipod to be erased

My hard drive went out and had to be replaced. I coundnt back-up anything before it happened becuase i was having so many issues with my computer. So i plugged my ipod into my computer and Itunes tells me-

Try this:
Right clicking on your ipod in the device list an d choosing "transfer purchases" will copy apps and bought media from iTunes to your computer. Due to the new iTunes library on your new HD, iTunes will erase your ipod during the first sync. Basically it's backing up manually, transferring her purchases (apps and bought music), letting iTunes erase the ipod due to the new iTunes library, and restoring from the manual backup again, to get all the data and settings back.
Make sure your new computer account is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your ipod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.

Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod got wiped during the first sync.

Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.

Music app should reflect iTunes and Add features not remove them

It has taken years to get my music the way I wanted it. I could find and listen to music with ease. Now Apple seem to be taking features away bit by bit and TBH I am sick of re-working iTunes with each major update. It is frustrating to use iTunes one way and hard work to get the app working in a similar way (Without all the extra work of smart playlists etc)
1. Why can't the music app just be a mirror image (as in functionality) to iTunes? and
2. Why take features away once everyone gets used to them?
I say Add new features but don't remove them, SIMPLES!

Hey, not trying to get rid of you, but the iPhone forums might get you better answers. I don't have one...but everyone in that forum might!
I do know about resintalling itunes, though. The actual iTunes program files are in different folders than the actual music/podcast/ringtones folders, so they should stay put.
That being said, it's always a good idea to have backups. Especially of purchased content, and your itunes database ITL file.

N82, music stops with SportsTracker

In general the N82 has been fine after a few initial teething problems; like the music library constantly rebuilding itself each time I started the music player (that seems to have sorted itself somehow).
The one annoying problem I am finding now is that when I have SportsTracker running (and tracking) in the background
the music I am listening to randomly stops mid track. When I look at the phone the song time is still moving and the phone is still responsive there is just no sound. If I leave it alone it will stop at the end of the track and not move to the next one. It would appear this only happens when the music player is on random, at least I have not seen it happen yet without random. It is a bit of a random bug too as it can happen at any time, sometimes it takes only a minute, other times it can function perfectly for an hour.
This is not a huge issue just an annoyance as I like listening to my whole music collection on random and it's annoying to stop mid training to restart the music. I have not tried any other music players.

Well, I'm having the same issue with my N82, listening to music (shuffle on) while Sports Tracker is running. But in my case, both apps crash and I can only see the clock in standby mode for a while. Then the system restarts itself.
And as I reopened ST, just got that half-comforting message that the last workout was recovered after application crash.
When I started to try both apps together, it happened just once and then everything was just fine. But today they crashed 4 times in a row, so I had no option other than jogging music-less and GPS-less.
I wonder whether the music player is making ST crash or vice versa.
Anyway, bottom line is that we're not having fun using these apps as we should. And it would be a big shame having to run only one app just to avoid crashing.
No effective solutions by now? I would hate to admit that my Blackberry friends are right about my N82...

Music App with Both Chord and Solo Keyboards?

For a while now, I've been looking for an iPad app that I'd think there'd be dozens of, but I've yet to find one.
It would be a simple music composing app that lets you play a melody line on a keyboard while simultaneously playing a chord (via button or second keyboard) from a (modifiable) selection of chords. So, one hand composing melody, one finger (on the other hand) playing supporting chords.
It seems like it'd be a fairly intuitive way to quickly save rough musical ideas, but maybe it's just me.
Most of the apps I've downloaded let you make, play and/or record a sequence of chords, but there's no way to play a melody at the same time. I'd like the ability to control the playing of the melody and chords...tinker around with the combinations, you know?
The closest I've found is "SongSynth," but that just plays a push-button chord off the same note you're playing on the (only one-octive) keyboard. What if I want to play a G note in the melody over a chord that isn't rooted in G?
Anyway, hope this makes sense, and hope this app exists and you can steer me to it!

It's hard enough to juggle earpieces, expensive hardware and belts (etc) for keys (etc) with software when exercising.
Particulary since most running log apps can't control Playlists directly.
Which to launch, then, start first…!
The simpler and better-integrated such handling is, the better.
It's tempting to think the changes are part of Apple's bigger plans to 'break up' iTunes, which has become unweildy, given all the functionality it's had to grow to encompass - when compared with a simple audio manager ten years or so ago.

Music issues with iphone 3gs and itunes

I deleted a song from my library and computer but it wasn't removed from my iPhone 3GS, how do I get rid of it? I only have IOS 4.3.2 and don't want to download IOS 6 or jailbreak my iPhone. In addition, it was a ringtone that I downloaded and it isn't functionalling properly, but it also appears in my normal music among the other songs. I need to delete the song from both my ringtones and my songs, please help.

Nevermind, I got it to work. I was trying it on a DRM protected file. Doing it with a non-DRM protected file worked fine and it showed up in the "Custom" section of the Ringtone page.
If the ringtone file you purchased does not show up as a ringtone and you see it as a music file instead, you should be able to use a utility to strip the DRM info and then convert it into a ringtone (plenty of tutorials for doing this around the intertubes).

Contribute V2 is not compatibile with Contribute V4. i.e.,
Either you
need to migrate all your users to V4 (very much suggestable)
or Keep all
of them on V2.
I was looking at Contribute V2 yesterday and comparing
against V4.
