Music Storage on computer

If I have music stored in the My Music folder on my computer and it is also in my iTunes library is the music actually stored twice on my hard drive?

Yes it is if you have the option checked 'Copy files to iTunes Music library when adding to library' you can ckeck this in the iTunes prefrences menu.Do a search for any song in your iTunes library and see if it comes up twice. If you add a song form the 'my music' folder to iTunes and then move the file from my music folder to itunes music folder iTunes will not be able to play the song since the file has been moved. simple add it to iTunes library again if you are moving files

  • How do I download my music onto another computer, when I no longer have the music on another computer, ipod, or any other storage device?

Just as it says: How can I download music again that I have already bought and downloaded once on another computer?
I no longer have the music on another computer (I no longer have the original computer) and the only other place I put the music was my Ipod that I lost. (Im sure its somewhere in my house, but can't seem to find it)

Whether you can re-download your past music purchases will depend upon what country that you are in. On the iTunes store home page on your computer there should be a Puchased option under Quick Links on the right-hand side of it - go into that and see if music is an option for re-downloading

  • Use external hard drive to copy music to second computer

Ok, here's the situation and what we're wanting to do. I'm so confused by all of the iTunes file manipulation, copies of music, libraries, playlists, etcetera.
We have a home computer (Win. XP) that has a slave drive in it. We use the slave drive for image, video and of course, our iPod music storage.
I have a work computer (Win XP Pro) that also has a slave drive in it, and I use it for image and video storage.
I have an external portable Maxtor USB hard drive.
My wife and I have different music tastes, but both of us do mutually like about 70% of the music on our home computer. It's that other 30% that we can't stand of the other person's music. Since iTunes makes it near impossible for us to use multiple iPods on one copy of iTunes (without jumping through hoops (such as computer user accounts, manual vs. automatic management, using Playlists, etc.) and confusing us to no end), I'd like to simply copy all of our music onto my external hard drive, carry it to work, put a fresh copy of iTunes 7 on the work computer, copy the music off my hard drive and onto my work computer's slave drive. Then do a fresh setup of my iPod again (since it's been loaded with some of her junk by accident).
I don't want to change my home computer's settings or anything. My wife does 90% of the music purchases. I'd just like to pick and choose what I want from home and I'll manage it at work on that computer. You see, she has her iPod setup to put any and all new music onto her iPod. If she buys an album, all of it goes on her iPod. Me, I like to pick and choose which songs go on there.
So, how is the best way to copy the music, library, whatever it is I need onto my external HD and then copy it onto my work computer's slave drive?
From then on, if we add songs/albums at home, how should I best keep taking the new songs/albums over to my work computer so I can manage my own iTunes/iPod? Can I just go in and copy the files out of "iTunes Music" folder onto a zip drive and then drop them in the work computer's "iTunes Music" folder?
BTW, I've decided my next computer will be a macbook. It will be my first Mac and I'm really looking forward to seeing what all the Apple/Mac fuss is about. But GESH, I'd thought Apple was a little better than all of this non-sense. I hope it's just that I'm really confused by iTunes and not yet up to the Apple/Mac way.
Oh, and THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP!

    Thanks ed2345!
I was thinking maybe I could just use the "Moving your iTunes Music Folder" instructions all the way down to, BUT NOT INCLUDING steps 11 & 12. Instead, once the consolidation and copy to the external drive was done, I'd just need to go back up and point to the original iTunes Music folder, right?
I have no problem manually adding to the work PC during the week as we add new stuff to the house. Is just copying the new music out of home iTunes Music and onto a USB zip drive to carry to work and then drop in the work iTunes Music folder the way to do it? If so, that's easy enough for me!
As far as playlists, I thought had a pretty good understanding of what they were, but your use of the words "points to songs" better cemented my understanding of what they were. I thought they were duplicating songs into miniature libraries. I would have no problem doing as you suggest (creating a JJ Playlist) and then pick-n-choosing through the library. However, is there a not problem with two different iPods (both are Nanos, but hers is a 4GB and mine is an 8GB) plugging into iTunes (at different times of course) under the same computer user? Will it recognize that my 8GB Nano is connected and not her 4GB and then let me manage my iPod manually or by only updating "JJ Playlist"? And then 5 minutes later after I've unplugged she could go in and it would do her automatic full sync?

How do I burn a backup DVD of my music on my computer?

well-iDVD Used to be included, but now it's not  =-( I think it's around $30
you could try using "Burn" which I think is freeware and will burn basic DVD video discs. Otherwise, you're gonna have to buy something. Yeah, mac's gonna take some gettin' used to, likewise, if I was to try and use a PC, it'd take some getting used to as well. iPhoto might help you with your photos and stuff and it may be included. You may be able to use right click on the movie and burn it to a disc. Dunno if it'll play back on a PC, though... if you had a cloud account or some storage space online you could do it that way, but, enough
    well, I tried

I belong to iTunes in order to put music on my computer and sync to my iPod.  I don't know if I belong to iTunes Match??  I have noticed that the vast majority of my songs when not connected to the Internet  are grayed out and not playable..  Then again there is a minority that are playable. Why are the color album photos of my playlist on my iPad.music.  Does't that use up storage space? Is there a way to get rid of them?

  • Transfering music from my computer in NY to my computer in Florida

Is there any way to transfer music from my computer in NY to my computer in Florida?

    Here's 2 ideas:
    1) Buy an external hard drive and move all the NY files to it, and ship/take the exHD Florida
If you want to have the same library and everything, consolidate it onto the exHD using these directions and don't forget to take the iTUnes LIbrary.ITL file as well.
    2) Use an online file storage service. Just google +online music storage+ and start researching hte one that seems to fit your needs & budget.
Upload the NY files to the service , and download the files in Florida.
If your library is large, idea 1 takes the least amount of time. I gave up on the online storage thing....my library is too big. It was taking WEEKS to upload all the songs.

    Hello mig04,
While looking into the issue you are experiencing I came across some helpful information. In an article called iCloud: Troubleshooting creating backups found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3992 there are a number of steps to help get your issue resolved.
    General troubleshooting
    General information
iCloud Backup requires a Wi-Fi connection to the Internet.
Automatic backups occur when you've plugged in your iOS device, locked the screen, and have connected it to Wi-Fi.
You can manually start a backup by tapping Back Up Now in Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup (requires a Wi-Fi connection to the Internet).
iCloud Backup will provide helpful information and status messages related to backups at the bottom ofSettings > iCloud > Storage & Backup.
If automatic backups don't work as expected, test to see what happens when you start a manual backup by tapping Back Up Now at the bottom of the Storage & Backup screen.
Backups and restores both take time, especially if you have a lot of data or a slow connection. Depending on the size of your data and the speed of your network, you may need to give more time than you expected to a backup or restore.
Make sure you have at least 50 MB of free space available on your iOS device before you back up. If you have no space available on your device, iCloud Backup can fail in some cases. You can verify how much free space you have available on your iOS device in Settings > General > About.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • I just downloaded Mountain lion and I kind a wanted to listen to music on my computer screen then to my headphones and I also want to use the dictation Mic output so was wondering if it's at all possible to do those both of the same time, also using the s

I just have just downloaded Mountain lion and I wanted to listen to music on my computer screen with my HDMI cable plug into my back of my screen and I wanted to talk to dictation on my regular standard iPhone headphone and I was wondering if it's all possible change your settings Mac Mini to set it so you can listen to those both like your headphones and use the mic in your headphones and there's no settings that would change in the Mac Mini so do there is a flaw in this system or I am just really really really really dumb.

You computer is probably perfectly repairable, but if you want a new one anyway, it is perfectly possible to transfer the data from the faulty one.
But it would be a mistake to simply put the old HD in the new computer.
    These are the steps:
Remove Hard drive from faulty computer. (very easy on Unibody MBPs, do-able but not so easy on older MBPs)
Put it in a cheap enclosure
    Connect it the new computer
    Boot up new computer.
If the new computer has never been run before the Setup Assistant will ask if you want to import your apps, data, settings etc from either another mac, another HD connected to the Mac or a Time Machine back up.
Obviously chose the second option (another HD connected to this Mac) and follow prompts.
If the new computer has already been run (so Setup Assistant doesn't run when you boot it up), you will need to use Migration Assistant...or run the installer again so that Setup Assistant runs again.

I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

  • I am having problems with my music collection, after burning all of my music to the computer I organized it into folders and placed it in the iTunes Folder. Starting on a new computer now. I can get my music from old computer?

I am having problems with my music collection, after burning all of my music to the computer I organized it into folders and placed it in the iTunes Folder. As of now i realize this was a mistake. Starting on a new computer now. I cant get my music to transfer from the itunes folder on the old computer? I keep getting error "Can't Read from the source file or disk." Whenever I got to folder properties its always checked read only. But when i play the song it works just fine. Im sure this is just because I added music into itunes folder but is there anyway to fix it?

WMA files are 'window media audio' files, which is a Microsoft format. If you want to add them to your iTunes library on your Mac then you will need to convert them into a compatible format first. If you still have your windows machine then iTunes for Windows can convert them from WMA to MP3 format : https://discussions.apple.com/message/24158701#24158701
Or try a search for, for example, 'convert wma to mp3' to find programs to convert them.

  • HT4527 I want to move my music onto my computer, I have music stored on my laptop not in itunes, how do i put it into an itunes media folder and consolidate it without itunes?

Basically I didnt have enough room to consolidate my itunes libary on my C drive, I moved them to my D, they then were no longer in my itunes libary, I moved them back but the songs are still no longer in my libary. This is not a major issue, the problem is getting all my music into a itunes media folder and then consolidating it without the use of iTunes.

Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer.
    Launch iTunes.
That is all you need to do.

  • How do i get music from one computer to a different computer??????

i downloaded a lot of music and video's off of limewire and now can't get them to my other computer (my other computer has itunes) HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You could enalbe your iPod as a disk using iTunes. Also, I found a helpful program when my powerbook deleted all my music from my computer. If you have iTunes on the computer you downloaded the stuff on to, search google for Music Rescue, download it to the computer that you are transferring the music to and, with the iPod updated with everything you downloaded, us Music rescue to transfer it from the iPod to iTunes. If specified, the program will also rebuild playlists etc... but if they were smart playlists they will not be transferred as smart playlists. If the computer with iTunes is not on the internet, using your iPod as a disk, transfer the installer to the other computer and install it.
