Music stored on external hard drive and iPod no longer displayed in iTunes

I have all of my music stored on a portable external hard drive. For some reason, when I last booted up my computer the drive name from the external hard drive changed from F:\ to G:\. Unfortunately the source for all the music was linked to the F:. Now the iTunes doesn't know where the music is. I have tried to consolidate the library, but it didn't work. And now nothing is showing up in my iTunes. But all of my music is still stored on the external hard drive and the iPod. Any suggestions?

Close itunes, go into windows disk mgmt and set the drive letter back to F:
When you re-open itunes it should be back to normal.

  • Itunes music stored on external hard drive -- and itunes library empty

Hi, I recently upgraded to a new external HD (Seagate Go for Mac) and I moved my 111 GB of music media (which was stored on my old ext. HD) onto the Seagate. Only problem then was that when I tried to play a song in the iTunes library, it couldn't locate the file.
So -- after trying various combos of things, I ended-up doing a new install of iTunes. Which of course shows up empty (the iTunes library). And all my music media is still on the Seagate.
So -- is there a way to have my iTunes library recognize what is in the Seagate? So I don't have to burn that 111GB of music again?
    Thank you

update to the question above -- I went into Time Machine and restored my iTunes library, so it is showing what music I have again in there. FYI in advanced settings, I kept the setting that the music is stored in the Seagate HD.
BUT when I click on any music, it still cannot locate the file (all the music media files are still stored on the Seagate ext. HD)
So -- how can I get the iTunes library to re-connect with what is in the Seagate HD?
    Thank you!

  • Share music stored on external hard drive with users of computer?

Is it possible to share music that has been stored on an external hard drive with the users of that computer? I have just moved and combined all music to an external hard drive and now I want to allow all the users to access that music. I'd also like to have it so that when one user adds more music, it is also added to the other users iTunes.

    Hello, Gazzlaa84.
You can import your media a couple different ways.  If you plan on keeping the media on the external drive, I would just direct iTunes to read the media folder on the external.  Here are the steps on how to make that change.

  • New hard drive on laptop, itunes music stored on external hard drive...

my hard drive on my laptop crashed and I got a new one installed...I kept all my itunes music on an external hard drive, and that is ok. I have reinstalled itunes on my laptop, but how do I get itunes to read the music from my external hard drive??

When you say "when i double click on my itunes files it just opens up this list of music." it doesn't mean anything to me. You need to explain clearly, remember I only know what you tell me.
I need to understand how you have things set up and if you had you iTunes library database on the external drive or the c: drive. That is the iTunes folder containing iTunes library.itl.
What do you see when you open iTunes on the new PC, are your music files there. If not, every time you play a track it gets added to itUnes so you should at least have some files in your library.
What problem are you trying to solve? Is just getting the tracks into your iTunes library, or are you also concerned about ratings, count and playlists from the old PC. If so do you still have access to the old PC?

  • HT1364 I have moved my library to an external hard drive and changed the location of the iTunes media folder in Preferences, but every time I close and re-open iTunes, I have to do it all over again.  How can I make the iTunes media folder change permanen

I have moved my library to an external hard drive and changed the location of the iTunes media folder in Preferences, but every time I close and re-open iTunes, I have to do it all over again.  How can I make the iTunes media folder change permanent?  I have an older machine with Windows XP.

I don't believe mounting the hard drive should be necessary, unless you have several external drives and want your computer to recognise them as folders, rather than drives. I've never had to mount a hard drive, ever. If you don't know how to do it, then it shouldn't be necessary now.
    Try this:
Prepare iTunes so that it can see the external drive.
Make a note of which drive-letter the external drive has been allocated. (Look in Windows Exploer)
Look at the file location for a song. Make sure it plays (and therefore that iTunes has found it). Highlight it and select File/Get Info/Summary>Where: and make a note of the drive letter for that song.
Close and shut down the computer.
The next time you turn the computer on again, connect the external drive
Before you start iTunes - check the external drive in Windows Explorer. Is it ready, does it have the same drive-letter that it had last time? Can you go into the drive and see the files on it?
Once you can, start iTunes. (If the drive lettter has changed, you need to work out why before going any further.)
If iTunes fails to find your external drive, you need to check where iTunes is looking for your Library.
Select the same song you checked before (presumably iTunes can no longer find it). Follow the procedure for locating it. You should be able to see where iTunes thinks the file is. It's the drive that counts. Which drive letter is iTunes looking at? Is it the same one that it was previously (which should also be the same one that the drive has now).
What happens, which step do you have problems with?

  • I have just purchased my 1st mac and want to start my iTunes fresh.  I have all my music on an external hard drive and want iTunes stored on it.  How do i do this

I have just purchased my 1st Mac Mini,
I haven't imported any music yet except from purchased music.
I have 100gb of music on an external hard drive (already formatted to Mac OS Journaled.
I want my iTunes to be store on the External Hard drive, and to update my External Hard drive with new music I add to iTunes.
I also want to know the best way of adding my music on the Ext Hard drive  e.g.:  "add folder to library" or "import"
I plan on buying a Macbook Pro soon, and want to be able to use the same iTunes library.

Launch iTunes with the Option key held down, click on Choose Library, and specify it. If the external drive doesn't contain the iTunes database files, create a new library there and import that music.
If the library contains any rented movies, they won't play on a different computer.

  • Itunes music stored on external hard drive

    Hello,
I have my itunes music, movies and tv shows stored on a lacie external hard drive that is getting close to full. I was wondering if there was a way to sync it so that I could use a second hard drive to start storing music on? I have gone to the "advanced" preferences and told itunes where I want to keep my music library.
Also if I have set the preference to tell itunes where the music is, what do I delete from my laptop to make room available on the hard drive (internal)?
    Thanks.
    Jack

Okay, I thought as much. I too wanted to also separate my movies, photos and music for example videos and photos on one external hard drive and music on another. It seems like this is not possible therefore I ask, if I buy a larger external HD, what is the general feeling people have about taking all 100+ gigs on current hard drive and moving/copying to a new larger one? Playback quality loss an issue?
    Thoughts??
    Thanks

  • My songs have all been duplicated.  All my music is on external hard drive and I want it to stay there.  Am using a new computer and thought I'd done all the required things for my library to show on iTunes 11.

I'm using a new computer.  All my music is on an external hard drive and I want it to stay there.  Before installing iTunes on the new computer, I followed turingtest2's instructions as to the layout of all the iTunes folders (Itunes folder, Itunes Media, Music, etc...).  I also followed his instructions as to get all my music in iTunes on the new computer (but keeping all the media on the external drive).  Now my songs are all duplicated in my library (I normally have about 15,000 of them). They all play when I click onto them.  Also, I've lost all my playlists, and all the songs in the library are now ticked. I've already spent hours trying to sort this out, but can't seem to find a solution.  Help please!

    Hi turingtest2,
Thank you for replying.  I've been looking at your posts about setting up iTunes using an external drive.  A bit of background info.  My old computer broke down, so I got a new one from work.  I've always kept my music files on my external drive (I have around 170GB of music).  I didn't follow the suggestions in the "migrate iTunes library" post because my old computer died on me.  However, I've looked at your posts about lay out of the iTunes folders.  Before connecting to iTunes on the new computer, I had reorganized my iTunes folder on my E: external drive, and created an iTunes folder which contains an iTunes Media subfolder.  The music files are in a Music folder, which is in the iTunes Media folder.  I've also put the following files in my iTunes folder: iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, iTunes Music Library.xml, as well as sentinel.  I then followed the advice you gave bmw99 on 2 Nov 2013 at 9.58 (sorry, can't copy the exact answer).
Just to clarify:  I'd like to keep all my music media on the E: external hard drive (the computer hard drive is too small), and I'm aware i might never have my playlists back, and that all the songs in my library might be ticked.  However, I don't want my library to be duplicated.
I'm at work at the moment, but will be back home in about 10 hours, so I can be more specific about folders / files names.
I'm glad you picked up my message and greatly appreciate your help.

  • New Computer-  XP to windows 7 and I transfered my music with an external hard drive and will not locate the music.  How do I fix this?

I just copied all my itunes mucis folders onto my external hard drive and copied them over to my new windows 7 computer and I itune cannot "locate" the music.  How do I fix this?

I suspect your library has been transformed from the old layout into the new one. See make a split library portable for details. The empty but for artwork folders you're seeing are likely to contain orphaned artwork and .ini files generated at some point by Windows Media Player. iTunes doesn't move these when it shuffles things around. Once you've made sure you can move the artist folders sideways or down into another folder, make sure nothing else has been affected, then remove.

  • Moved Itunes to external hard drive & now Ipod not showing up in itunes?

I recently installed an external hard drive and moved Itunes and all my music to it. Now when I plug in my Ipod, Itunes doesn't recognize it. And it doesn't show up in my computer, but the pod says its "connected". It does show up in the USB devices and so does the hard drive, but they are listed seperately. But both devices are plugged into the same USB spliter.
    what is happening?
    help!!!

    Hi, BreezerSB2.
It sounds like you may not have followed the instructions described in this article in the Apple Knowledge Base.
If that's not possible - or you don't want to do so - and the music files are in fact on your external drive, you can add them to your iTunes Library by referring to this article 's Add to Library section.

  • I saved my itunes account to an external hard drive and can no longer access it

i have saved my itunes account to an external hard drive, then deleted my account on my laptop to make space on my hard drive and can no longer get acces to my itunes account.

If you move/copy your data back to internal drive, you should be able to add it to library, by clicking file add to library at the top of itunes.

  • Will iTunes Match work if my music is stored on an external hard drive and not in my mac's iTunes Library?

Since my music takes up a lot of space, I've moved my entire iTunes Library to an external hard drive. If I subscribe to iTunes Match, can I upload the music from my external hd or does it need to actually be in my iTunes Library?

    Crawdaddy wrote:
I'm wondering if, AFTER uploading all my music to iCloud Match, will I need to have the external hard drive connected in order to access music from iCloud while in iTunes?
iTunes Match does not work this way. The location of your music in iTunes is not changed by iTM. If you needed the external HDD connected to play your music before you enabled iTM you will still need it connected after you enable HDD.
Now, if you wish to not have to have the extenal HDD connected, then you can create a new, empty library in iTunes by holding down the Option key while launching iTunes and enable iTM on that library. That will allow you to you stream your music in iTunes. You'll need to switch between the libraries to make changes to the metadata.

  • I have all of my iTunes music on an external hard drive (Glyph 3TB), all of a sudden iTunes will not play any of my music. i ran disk utility and i'm good. What else can i do??

    Greetings,
I have a macbook pro purchased in 2009. I run the current Yosemite OS X on it, and have over 12, 000 iTunes music tunes stored on an external hard drive (Glyph 3TB). Recently iTunes does not load up on my computer. I've ran disk utility and repair, etc and it says everything is fine, however i can't seem to get iTunes to come up and play music. My questions:
what can i do to fix this?? Is my macbook pro too old that i need to seriously consider purchasing a new one?? If i purchase a new macbook pro, can i hook up the Glyph 3TB to the new one and have it play my music without problems/?
    Thanks,

  • Music/movies on external hard drive and internal hard drive

I moved my itune library to an external drive using the recommended method (consolidate, etc.) quite awhile ago. Everything is working fine with that. However, at some point, apparently when the external drive was not connected, new music and movies were downloaded into the library folder on the internal hard drive on my computer.
Now iTunes, although it displays the information about the files that are on the external hard drive, when I try to play them, I get the message that "the song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it now?" I can play the song after I locate it on the external hard drive.
    My questions:
1)Will I have to "locate" all of these items individually, or is there an easier way to do this? And, is there a way to avoid this problem in the future if I accidentally download an item when the external hard drive is not hooked up?
2)How do I move the files that are now on the internal hard drive to the library on the external hard drive so that iTunes recognizes them?
    Thanks!

Either that, or Windows nicely changed the drive letter on th exHD when you plugged in another USB device like a digital camera or even your ipod. The exHD MUST be connected before you start itunes. It's just the way it's designed.

If the drive letter changed from what it was before, all you have to do is assign the correct letter to your exHD permanently.

Make sure iteuns preferences > Advanced tab are set to have the iteuns folder on the exHD. Then run the library > consolidate command. itunes will move them over to the exHD without losing track of them,.
If you move them in Win Explorer, itunes will lose track.
