Music will not add to iTunes (MP3 Format)

I'll try to make this quick. About a month ago my hard drive was over flooded with MP3's. I decided to get an external 250GB Hard drive. I moved all of my files over to the external hard drive. iTunes "lost" the connection to those files. Rather than re-define the location of my files inside of iTunes, I took this opportunity to re-organize all of my music.
1. I uninstalled iTunes
2. Deleted the iTunes directory under My Documents\My Music\iTunes
3. Re-installed the latest version of iTunes.
4. Reactivated using my AppleID
I won't even get into how upset I am that the music I purchased is no longer available to me. I find it nearly insane that I can see a list of the music/games I PAID FOR but cannot re-download them. Therefore I've lost those songs and the Suduko game I bought. Lovely.
This is where the problem starts. I do a FILE <-- ADD FOLDER TO LIBRARY and then I select the folder to add. Some folders add with no problems while other folders will not add. Here are the steps I have taken to resolve the problem.
1. Try to drag and drop the songs into iTunes.
2. Try to do a FILE <-- ADD FILE TO LIBRARY (1 file at a time)
3. Moved songs back to the C:\ drive from the external drive.
4. Rename the music files.
5. Using MusicBrainz Picard, I re-tagged (ID3) the files.
6. Uninstalled iTunes and installed an older version (v.7.0)
7. Sent a music file to my friend (here is where it get's interesting)
Now, my friend ALSO cannot add ANY MP3 file that I send him, but he can go out and download the exact same file from the internet and he can add that file with no problem. What does this mean? Is my computer corrupting my MP3 files? Some things to note:
1. I've used Windows XP SP2 to edit my ID3 tags by using the Right-Click <-- Properties <-- Summary Tab to fix or correct some of the names of the artists/albums. Could I be causing some ID3 tag problems when I use MusicBrainz or Windows XP SP2 to change my files?
2. When I try to play one of these "bad" MP3's in iTunes, it won't play the song but when I attempt to play the song using Media Player, I have no problem listening to it.
Any ideas? I'm frustrated and lost. It's been a month without my music on my iPod and I'm wondering if their are any other programs aside from iTunes that I can use with my iPod.

Update - The problem is within iTunes. This is an educated guess but when other applications have NO problem playing, and reading (ID3 Tags) of the same MP3 files that iTunes CANNOT see, this must be an iTunes problem. These are the programs that can play and read ID3 tags on my MP3's:
1. Windows Media Player
2. WinAmp
3. Songbird
4. VLC Media Player
5. MusicBrainz
Also, I used a freeware app named ID3 cleaner to do a test on my MP3's. The program scans for corrupted ID3 tags on MP3 files. It found no corruption on my files at all. I have also converted the ID3 tags on my MP3's to older version thinking that iTunes might have a problem with ID3 V2.4. I took it back to 2.1 and this didn't solve the problem. I'm very frustrated with iTunes and will be using SongBird to work with my iPod for now on. I'll just cut my losses as far as the $50 I've spent in the iTunes Store. If anyone has any other recommendations to fix the problem, I'd love to hear them.
I know I'm not the first person who can't add/import MP3 files into their iTunes library. Doing a search in Google shows hundreds of thousands of hits. At this point it's a complete mystery to me. Something in some of my MP3 files makes iTunes unhappy. This was NOT a problem about 4 months ago. I have a feeling that the most recent releases of iTunes (since the iPhone) has some major bugs. I've been an iTunes user for only about a year but in the last 4 months I've had more problems with Quicktime / iTunes than I have had in the other 8 months combined.
Thanks for reading my unneccesarily long rant I'll check back, seems like a lot of good and helpful people come into these forums. Must be the Apple state of mind

  • Music will not play from iTunes during a slideshow that is run from flickr. ATV says turn on homesharing...it already is on!  HELP!!!!

Music will not play during a slideshow launched from Flickr.  After choosing music and starting slideshow, the screen says "loading" and it never stops.  Under the computers section it says, turn on home sharing in iTunes on the computer with the music library.  It is on but apple tv wont recognize it.  I've signed out and signed back in over and over and home sharing is on but music wont play.  Is this a bug with flickr?  Music will play when i launch a slideshow from the iPad but it doesnt have as many cool options for slideshows as flickr does.  I want the flickr slideshow to play with music!!!  Grrrrrrrr!!!!!  Can anyone help???

ok, major miracle.  it is now working.  here is how i fixed it, and it was a stroke of luck to even find this.  opened iTunes, went to edit, then to preferences.  box pops up, went to the sharing icon and clicked share my local library on my local network.  then scrolled down and checked all the boxes that were applicable.  for the heck of it i went through all the other headings to see what else might be hiding from me.  i never thought this would do anything but went to ATV, selected flickr, chose some music and wa-la....its playing.  also, under the computers heading, it still does not show my iTunes library but clearly its there someplace.  oh well, it works...i'm happy!  your reply inspired me to keep working so thank you for that!

  • MP3 will not add in itunes

I have a mp3 file that when I add into itunes, it doesn't add or give an error message, but, plays fine in quicktime.
The file format is MPEG Layer 3 stereo 44.100 kHz with a data rate of 125.86 kbits/sec and 2 channel stereo.

+"it doesn't add or give an error message, but, plays fine in quicktime"+
That is standard iTunes usability-speak for "this file is not compatible with iTunes, even though it plays fine in other players." iTunes is very sensitive to slight variations in MP3 headers and tags. The only remedy I have found is to process the file through Audacity, Switch, VBRfix, or some other program that will output a new "clean" MP3.

  • My music will not appear in iTunes

I recently downloaded the newest version of iTunes. Now when I go to open iTunes on my desktop all of my music files have disappeared. When I look on my hard drive, I can see my music files stored in the iTunes folder but for some reason they are not appearing on iTunes. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

If nobody is helping you here, you should fill out the form at the bottom of this page:

This will send an email to Apple.

  • Music will not add to any of my apple devices

When I bought my mac at the beginning of october everything in iTunes was working perfectly but I think it has been ever since I updated it (not sure to which version). Now when I plug in my iPad or iPhone iTunes recognizes them but it will not allow me to add anything to them. When I updated my iPad to iOS5 I had to re add all my apps through iCloud, which is not possible with my iPhone because it is a 3g. Whenever I go to drag songs to the devices in the sidebar it doesn't highlight or show the plus sign. Has anyone ever experienced this or know what to do?

It could be something that yahoo has done in their perpetual 'improvements'. Beyond removing and readding your info there's not much you can do but wait it out. If Yahoo has broken it, yahoo has to fix it.
In the past I've accessed my yahoo via mobile safari and I believe they also have their own mail app, you may want to explore those as a work around until it resolves.

  • My music will not copy from itunes in my pc to my iphone 4

I can see it in my Itunes library but when I try to drag it to the music subfolder under my devices it will not allow it! Please help!

Are you set to manual or do you have syncing setup? If it's the latter then you don't drag. You have to select iPhone under devices, go to the music tab and click what you want to sync, then Click on the apply button

  • Cds will not add to itunes

ive just installed icloud/match and now cannot add music via cds. they will import but not add to the library

You have to check the video extension. iPods cannot read mpg, avi, wmv... You'll have to convert your videos to mp4 using some iPod Video Converter. Search fot it and you'll find a lot of softwares.

  • Music will not play in iTunes 10.5

Music does not play in my iTunes.  iTunes freezes when I try to play any song or video clip.  I have updated to iTunes 10.5.

My case was escalated to Apple Engineers or the development team. Apple Support was told that 10.5 now requires 512mb minimum memory. My computer has only 384mb of ram. I was advised to upgrade my Pentium III with its maximum memory of 384mb, and not to upgrade my iPhone 3GS to 5.0 because it's to risky of failing the upgrade. I took the risk and upgraded to 5.0. My iPhone successfully upgraded with no problems. Then over wifi updated to 5.0.1 update successfully. I waited for iTunes 10.5.1 to release (11/18/2011) then installed the 10.5.1 software update. Problem solved!  Glad I waited for 10.5.1. An iTunes update has resolved similar problems before. Unfortunately the Apple iTunes developers do not always tell support all the bugs or fixes. All songs in my music library play as expected! Thank me for being such a patient, loyal and devoted iTunes user. What would I have done with my 70GB library, 70% imported, 30% purchase from iTunes!

  • Music will not play in iTunes store OR library. Quicktime also not working.

I am quite nearly at my wits end trying to figure out the problem I am having: I just started up a brand spanking new Mac Pro today, and aside from other problems, am unable to play songs that I migrated over from my old Power PC G5, which was running the last version of Mac OS 10.5 before it kicked the bucket; I luckily had an external drive running Time Machine backups.
The songs all show up, I checked my Library, checked permissions, ran my disk utility just to be sure, I have already gone through the authorization mambo in iTunes--I was able to sync my iPod Touch just fine, aside from a few issues with apps that I downloaded directly to my iPod not wanting to transfer over to my computer, it did tell me my new machine was authorized, of course I have two machines authorized because I was unable to deauthorize the last one before it died--but they just do not play. The play button shows, the little sound icon comes up beside the song, but no sound issues forth. Same thing seems to happen in iTunes. I attempted to play a Quicktime movie preview, also, but that did not work either, so I am wondering if there might be a connection between the two.
This too, after I migrated over everything, iTunes did not want to start up; I was prompted to reinstall it, as I was told it was corrupted or installed incorrectly. Which is weird, seeing as how I had only just started up the machine for the first time, and had nothing to do with installing iTunes in the first place. I downloaded it from the internet, and it seemed to be working fine until I attempted to play music.
If anyone can help me, I will be so very grateful. Just about next to tears, and am trying all avenues; next will be calling Apple Care and hoping for someone who can help.

I am having the same problem with my iTunes. Support had me uninstall everything and reinstall iTunes again thinking it was corrupt. I did that and it worked for a couple of days. Now they say that cannot help since it is iTunes and not my iPhone and sent me here. Sometimes I can get it to work sporadically if I reboot my laptop a couple of times, but I have rebooted a few times already and nothing plays...no song previews, nothing from my library. iPods and iPhone play fine, it is isolated only to iTunes and is super frustrating. I get the same task bar up top as if it were going to play, but the play timer doesn't start. Help please!!!

  • Some music will not transfer from itunes to ipod

I noticed the other day that one album consisting of 5 songs that's in ITunes is not on my IPod Nano.. These are the only songs that I'm aware of.The songs play on Itunes, the box next to the songs is checked and syncing does nothing. They were on there at one time.
    Thanks,
    Rich

Locate these tracks in iTunes, right->click on them and choose Get Info from the menu.  When the window comes up, head over to Info tab and make sure there is no tick mark next to "part of a compilation."  Then if necessary sync the updated changes to your iPod.
You can see how your iPod is cnofigured to sync your music from under its Music configuration tab in iTunes.

  • Music will not stay in iTunes library

For some time now, whenever I put music into my iTunes library from my iPod, and then close iTunes and reopen, the music is then gone. This never used to be a problem. Please help me to make the music, that is saved on my computer stay in my iTunes library at all times.

    UPDATE!!!
I did a chat with sony tech support and they helped me resolve our problem. I will give you step by step guide.
Step 1: Uninstall iTunes. Be sure to back up your music, either in CD or Zip Drive. You might lose it, but I didn't, I just had to go back and find it.
Step 2: Install Windows Installer 4.5. go to
    http://support.microsoft.com/KB/942288
Be sure to Download each of the files that it lists for your Operating System. I had to download three. You can download multiple files at once, too.
Step 3: Reinstall iTunes, import you music, and enjoy!!

  • Music will not stay in iTunes.

When I exit out of iTunes, my music disappears. Even music that I purchase in the iTunes store will just go into an iTunes folder. I was wondering if anybody else has had similar issues and what you did to fix it. Thank you!!

  • I bought an mp3 download of a cd online (not in iTunes) and it will not open in itunes.

I tried everything. Importing the songs through file, add to library, which usually works. I tried double clicking it and clicking "open with itunes". I even tried dragging each song individually and dropping into itunes but nothing will work! Please help!
Also, the files are completely fine. They open in Quicktime and play just fine. They just will not open in itunes.

Have you tried going to menu > file > option+create new version > create AAC and select tracks from your disc. You track should be converted as they are added to library.
You will need to change import preference to AAC if you have have them set as mp3.
