Must DSL modem and Extreme be directly connected to Fios DVR?

When we had Fios installed a couple years ago, I reluctantly brought the DSL modem and Airport Extreme from the den to the family room so that the two could be connected directly to the DVR set top box.  (We have no Fios coaxle jack in the den.)  I now wish to connect an external 2T hard drive to the Extreme, but only if I can relocate everything (except the DVR STB and the TV) back to the den.
Would this be doable -- preferably without having a coaxle jack installed in the den?   (Fios is also providing our internet service.)  I assume having Frontier come out to install a coaxle jack in the den would be the simplest solution, but am hoping there might be a quicker and less expensive method.
And, isn't connecting the DVR STB directly to the DSL modem really only to enable ordering and viewing movies and other pay-per-view products?

I have the same issue with my 24" March 2009 iMac connecting through a Linksys BEFSR41b router. I can connect directly to my cable modem with no problem, but will not automatically find the router. I had to go into the Network control panel and for the ethernet go into Advanced and manually set the speed to 10baseT, Full Duplex, and turn off iPv6. The connectors on the 9 year old Linksys router are a bit flaky at this point. I hope a new router and cable will let me connect at 100baseT.

Hi..I have an AirPort Extreme base connected to my DSL Modem and has been working fine. But I recently bought another DSL modem along with the latest Airport Express. With this one however I can't get it to connect to the Internet. The light on the Express is flashing green though. Does it mean I have to re-set the settings on Airport Utility? I.e. the old settings haven't been cleared yet. Any suggestions?

Let's see if I can get this straight.
You have an Airport Extreme base station that is set to "Create a wireless network" and you have the box checked for "allow this network to be extended"....
Then you have an Airport Express that is set to "Extend a wireless network" which you selected the name of your network in the box...
    Correct?
    See this Apple document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
The wireless unit on the right of the diagram can be either of the newer Apple base stations.
    Extreme, Express, Time Capsule

  • Power backup for dsl modem and Airport Extreme

Does anyone here have backup power for a dsl modem and Airport Extreme that is successful? I have a name brand power backup and when the power goes off both the dsl modem and Airport Extreme remain on; however, the network connection is lost so the fact that they remain on doesn't help. I have been unable to find anything about this problem on the internet generally and consultation with a well-known squad person has not helped. Any thoughts about this will be welcome.

Yes, I agree. But since the backup power keeps the modem powered, why doesn't the dsl connection continue? The squad person I talked with told me that the speed with which the backup power units replace power during an outage is about the same across different backup brands/units (I don't recall the speed but it was in milliseconds) and should be quick enough to retain the dsl connection. Doesn't happen.

  • The connection between a Westell 6100 DSL modem and my new Apple Extreme is not stable.

My new airport extreme and a Westell 6100 DSL modem are connecting, but the wifi is now slow and unstable.  How do I configure the modem and Airport Extreme so that they function together better?

The resason that the password shows long key length after clicking save settings is just for security purpose so that password can not be rechecked .....so you don't have to worry about the lenght of your DSL password ....it is correct even after saving the settings.....
Now as you said that Modem is already  under bridge ..... & you are trying to use PPPOE settings on router .... in that case you should get Internet Ip address under status tab of router after clicking connect .....as you are getting the error message "cannot get an Ip from PPPOE server"  ..... i assume that Modem is not configured under 100% Bridge Mode.....
Check once again with your Internet service provider if the modem is in Bridge mode or not....

  • Trying to set up airport extreme with a dsl modem and get DSN server not found message .   Get a green light on airport but no internet modem and get

Am attempting to set up a Wi Fi network with an airport extreme.    Get most of the way through the setup  (have a dsl modem) but get an error that it cannot connect to the internet.   Says I have a problem with a DSN server and asks for  what appears to be a series of numbers.    I had an old airport express working for some time and never saw this.
Decided to upgrade since the express was not powerful enough to work in the whole house.

It is always a good idea when changing out networking hardware to perform a complete power recycle of all of your networking gear.
    Please try the following:
Power-down the modem, AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), and computer(s). Leave them powered-off for at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to make sure that is has enough time to initialize.
Power-up (plug into power) the AEBS; wait at least 5-10 minutes or until its status light is a solid green. (Note: The status light may continue to flash amber after this timeframe. This is ok as it may just be letting you know that some additional configuration items need to be taken care of like setting up wireless security.)
    Power-up the computer(s).
Computers connected to the AEBS by either wire or wireless should now be able to access the Internet. Please post back your results.

  • Dsl modem for extreme

    Hi
I have just ordered an airport extreme; I use now a wireless modem/router (linksy).
From experience what DSL modem would you recommend that is stand-alone, (not connected to a pc/Mac all the time) and will connect to the AE without problems.
    Thanks

    wrong question
you want the right  DSL modem that works best with your ISP, ask them
as far as the airport is concerned, a modem is just another modem

  • Qwest Actiontec DSL Modem and APXBS problems

My Qwest Actiontec 1520 DSL modem/gateway is connected to the internet and I can browse the internet wirelessly through it. I have a new AXBS. When I set it up, my Mac can see it/connect to it, but the AXBS cannot connect to the internet. So, the problem seems to lie b/w the AXBS and the Actiontec dsl modem. What must I do to fix that?
    Thanks.
    Wm

It does have ethernet but it's also giving out a wireless signal. Why does ethernet interfere? The wireless (airport) works well at other places i.e. work, internet cafe places, other buildings. And this dsl modem is supposed to allow me wireless at home. If I unplug the ethernet cable from the computer and the modem will that help?

  • DSL issues and loss of Internet Connection-constantly

I also have a problem with the DSL, I always lose my connection or have to reset multiple times everyday. I have made numerous calls and chat just to get the same response. I have a Westall 7500 series. Rest assured you will no longer have an issue. I pay my bill every month and for this terribe service. No one ever gets my issue fixed. I have had 3 cells phones go over there data because this also happens during the night every single night.  I just might not pay my bill this month and go to another carrier as well as file a claim with the better business bureau because apparently Verizon doesnt care!

I have to say I am having the same issue.  Extremely bad last night and today.  Constant disconnects. I oncea gain contacted tech support and they are sending me replacement filters.
I dont think that will help since I have disconnected everything except the modem and still experiencing issues.
I honesly believe they're running out of IPs or overloading their nodes.
If I don't get someone to put some reasonable effort to help me I'm about to cancel my internet.  I'm paying extra for high speed and can't even stay connected (adding this: this is my 5th attempt to try to post this since I keep getting disconnected).
Unfortunately Charter is the only option and fios was denied by the city.  No more tearing up the city to add fiber.
This means I either move or bite the bullet and go with Charter cable.  I just might.  Their speed/pricing plan seems better.  I'd rather not go through the trouble but its become more trouble to use Verizon in the past year.
If anyone can help or offer a solution that would be fantastic.

  • My network, based on modem, wifi router (Airport Extreme),Time Capsule and Airport Express simply disconnects with all the lights green on the modem and Extreme, but the other components offline, 5 or so times per day.  I suspect the Extreme.

I have a Cisco System3 modem, feeding an Airport Extreme, which connects wirelessly a Timecapsules and an Airport Express both of which extend the network, ie send out more WiFi signal.  The system worked well for a long time, say a year and a half and then it started dropping out.  All the lights on the modem and airport Extreme stay green, but the other two components are blinking yellow. I've tried limiting the channels, but there are few sources in my neighborhood.  I have tried resetting the Extreme which worked for a week and now it's back to its random disconnect behavior.  I have read some of these blogs and no one seems to know what to do, especially not Apple.  Do I just get another router or what?  What do I lose if I use a non Apple router and what would you suggest?

Welcome to the discussion area, Junkcanoe!
I don't have a setup like yours, but might be able to offer some assistance.
Basically I have two jacks, a TC and an AE and I'd like to create a roaming network. Both of them are set to bridge mode with the same SSID, WPA2 security, same password, etc.
This would be the normal way to set up a roaming network, but the wild card here is that we don't know anything about how the main router that supplies the ethernet connections (valid IP addresses) to the condos might be configured.
For example, most apartments, hotels, etc that provide ethernet jacks usually limit the number of devices that can connect to each jack. Hotels tend to limit this to one or two devices. I counted six devices that you say will work properly plus a few more. Since you have two separate ethernet jacks, you may be looking at a situation where each jack is allocated a total of 4 devices, or valid IP addresses.
The bottom line here is that we won't be able to make much progress until we know more how the main router there has been configured. Is it possible for you to ask the complex manager (who will probably need to ask the IT guy) how many devices are allowed to connect per ethernet jack? Another way to ask the same question is how may valid IP addresses will each ethernet jack allow?
If you can, could I ask you to perform an experiment? Rather than have both the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule each connect to a separate ethernet jack, can you temporarily move one device near the other and connect them together using an ethernet cable? (Or, use a long ethernet cable if you don't want to move either device) LAN <-> port on one to LAN <-> port on the other. In other words, you'll only be using one of the ethernet ports in the condo for this experiment.
Any difference in performance or number of devices allowed to connect?

  • Westfall 6100 DSL Modem and AEBS

I have searched the forum for a solution and cannot find one so am asking here. Verizon had me install a new DSL modem, the Westfall 6100. It is set up as a bridge. After the initial modem setup and then connection to the AEBS (Note everything worked fine with the old mode before the changes) the AEBS would not give the green light and not connect to the internet. I made the mistake of changing connection sharing to Off(Bridge Mode) and now the internet works but I have other problems such as getting the Slingbox to work and my network printers. So I am trying to change back to Share a Public IP address. When I do that, I get an error that the DHCP Beginning and Ending Address are in conflict with the WAN IP address of the Apple Wireless Device. The AEBS never picks up the IP address sent by Verizon.
Any ideas on how to resolve this would be appreciated. Seems like I am spinning my wheels here and getting nowhere. Thanks

    Hi Bob,
More Info. I had to call Verizon Tech support again. To make a long story short, this is the way Verizon now does things. The modem has to be set up as bridge and routed bridge. In private lan settings, you have to enable DHCP server as well and let the modem assign addresses. This was another problem I had. I wanted to use the AEBS to do the DHCP. I had to turn of IP sharing and have the AEBS set to bridge mode. Then the modem does all of the addressing. I really don't care for this setup but it is the only way to get things working. The support guy told me PPPoE won't work. Since I already have 4 hours on the phone with tech support this week, I did not want to get into it.
Then I called Slingbox and they walked me through setting up things so I could use slingbox when out and about. This meant going into the modem again and enabling port forwarding.
Seems that Verizon has taken control of things with their new modems. At least things are working now.

  • DSL Modem and Wireless Router problems

I started to have problems on Tuesday.
    My Equipment is:
Dell Precision 870 PC with a Intel Pro network card
Apple IMAC with the Apple Lan connection
    Lynksys/Cisco E3000 (Problem started with a Linksys WRT610N router)
    Verizon (Actiontec) GT701C DSL modem
I came down to my office and I noticed that the DSL light on my modem was not lit.  In the past
this has ment that there is a problem in the Central Office.  Later in the day I got hold of Verizon
tech support and we got the DSL running again with the modem connected to either computer.
When I connect the router to the modem and the computers to the router, Dell via wire and Apple
via wireless 5.0 GHz 802.11N inout and restart both the router and the modem, I get connectivity
through the router and the modem but the DSL light on the modem is not lit.  After a long period
of time the DSL light may come on then I loose connectivity.
Everything was working correctly til late Monday night/early Tuesday morning.
I have reset both the modem and routers to factory defaults several time.  I have a problem when
trying to get connectivity with the moden after setting it up again and it takes me to the Verizon
DSL startup site.  Tech support walked me throuogh using the "192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect" and
shutting the redirect off.  I then have connectivity as long as the router is not connected.
I thoought the router went so I just installed a new router, the Linksys/Cisco E3000, and I still
    have the DSL light problem.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Having both routers the same IP address is a little bit confusing, but possible since each router creates it's own subnet and provides full PNAT support. Actiontec DSL modem has to have DHCP enabled since Linksys WAN (not LAN) port should be connected to one of 4 Actiontec LAN ports. Linksys should not have any configuration setup in regards of your WAN account. Just set it to dynamic address. In ohter words:
    1. RJ-11 connect to Actiontec mode/router.
    2. Actiontec modem should be configured to acquire an IP address from Verizon and to provide all authentication info to Verizon.
    3. Actiontec modem should be configured to allow clients to acquire dynamic IP addresses -- DHCP enabled.
    4. Linsys WAN (not LAN!) port should be connected to Actiontec LAN port.
    5. Linksys should be configured to acquire dynamic IP address and no authentifacations.
    6. Configure Linksys to be DHCP enabled or you can use static IP addresss if you want.
    7. Wireless devices would be connected to Linksys and on the way to the Internet addresses would go through double NAT conversions. Any wired device connected to Linksys would have similar  features. Any device connected to Linksys should be able to connect 192.168.1.1 assigned to Linksys, but not to Actiontec.
    8. To be able to connect Linksys and Actiontec would no be able to communicate unless you split 192.168.1.0/24 into smaller subnets and set specific routes in the table. But even you do so you will not be able to access 192.168.1.1 accross subnets boundary.
    Hope it helps.

  • Faxing through the dsl modem and not a internal modem

I use to fax things with the internal modem a few years back. Anyway to do this through the dsl modem now? I don't see a graphic for the modem to click on but the old internal modem icon is still on screen.
    Thanks
    Tony B.

Unless you have converted to digital VoIP type of phone line, there is no reason that you can't fax on the same phone line as you have your DSL on. You just can't use the DSL modem as the fax modem.
Some DSL modems have a "line" and "tel" jack -- plug the "line" jack to the wall and plug the "tel" jack to your fax. Got a phone plugged into the "tel" jack? Put a "Y" splitter on the fax and telephone and plug the splitter into the "tel" jack.
Some DSL modems only have one single RJ-11 jack. But they provide DSL splitter filters -- one non-line side is filtered for fax and phone, the other is unfiltered for DSL. Run the filtered side to your fax or separate Radio Shack Y-splitter to your fax and phone.
Some DSL modems with the single RJ-11 jack don't provide the "Y" splitter filtered/unfiltered thingy, and instead only provide single in-line DSL filters (one RJ-11 input and one RJ-11 output). Buy a Radio Shack "Y" splitter, run one output to the DSL, run the other output to the in-line DSL filter and on to the fax or second Y splitter then on to the fax and phone.
You just can't use the DSL modem as a fax modem; you still need to use the built-in fax modem of your computer, or Apple external USB modem or equivalent if you don't have an internal fax modem, in order to fax.

  • BellSouth Alcatel DSL Modem and Airport Extreme

I have a new iMac, and BellSouth DSL Internet service (alcatel modem). I get an Internet connection when connecting the modem directly to iMac using an ethernet cable. However, when I try to configure my Airport Extreme 1 of 2 things happens: a constantly blinking amber light, or a green light. In neither instance does Airport Utility see Airport Extreme (even when the light is green). I have tried powering off and recycling both Airport Extreme and the modem, with neither solving the problem. Any thoughts?

The modem is a Speed Touch Home.
wow, I used one of those 8 years ago I did not know they still being used. If I remember correctly it did not have integrated pppoe or pptp client so it requires you to run a pppoe or pptp client on your mac. Therefore when connecting it to an apple airport basestation you have to configure the pppoe client in the base station.
so open your airport utility select your base station , choose manual setup
the click the 'internet' icon in the toolbar of the airport utility window and from the connect using drop down choose PPPoE, then configure it with your isp login details. The click the update button.

  • DSL modem and Wireless G router not connecting.

Alright this one is weird for me. Two days ago I got a Wireless-G CISCO router. Or a WRT54G2 V 1.5 model. Now I set it up on my XP desktop and at first it seemed fine. I tried to get onto the internet and it wouldn't go. Then I tried to connect my laptop to the router and it succeeded, but the router couldn't connect to the internet.
After calling tec they told me that I need to fully bridge my modem. I'll list the specs down there later. Anyway I wen't back to my laptop, which has windows 7, and checked the router but it has a red X to the SSID and says "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network." And the other SSID's around me are fine. Let's not worry about my laptop though. Back to the desktop I learned that for whatever reason my address is 192.168.2.1 and that my modem needs to be fully bridged.
I got the internet to work, but it keeps cutting out. The problem is that the IP adress goes from 192. bla bla to 99. bla bla. It would do this every time I re-cycled the router. It would start at the 192. and give me perfect internet. Then it would switch IP after 30 secounds and go to the 99. which I couldn't do anything online. So do I have to bridge?
    Router: Linksys WRT54G2 V1.5
    Modem- siemens DSL speedstream 4100

Oh and would there be a chance the router and modem are all together not compatible?
    Thanks

  • 2wire dsl modem and Iphone

I'm going to approach this in a different manor. I have a 2wire dsl wireless connection at home and unable to connect to it from my iphone. My iphone sees my 2wire but the wireless symbol only holds for a few seconds before reverting back to the "E" connection. Has anyone got into the 2wire home page and worked to either reset or verify passwords to do a reset to both the phone and modem.

    J.D. Stone,
When you are on the Wi-Fi settings page and you see your network, tap on the blue arrow to the right of your network.
What is the IP address? If it starts with 169, you are getting a self-assigned IP address and are not connected to your network correctly.
Try tapping on "Forget this network" and connecting to your network again. It should prompt you for your password. After entering your password, tap on the blue arrow next to your network.
Are you still getting a self-assigned IP address? If not, you should be connected to your network. If so, forget the network again and try turning off your network security and connect. You should be able to connect at this point. If not, contact your 2wire provider to see what other network security is enabled on your router. If you can connect, try enabling your security again and connect. If you still cannot connect, try changing the network security you are using.
    Hope this helps,
    Jennifer B.
