Must power up twice in order to boot OS X

Hi,
I have a dual processor 1.8GHz PowerMac G5 running 10.5.6. In order to boot I must power up the G5, there is no start-up chime, then power if off and back on again and then I get the start-up chime and all is well. At first this was an intermittent problem, but it has happened every day for the past few weeks. Every night I power off the G5 and unplug it from the power bar. Leaving the G5 plugged in overnight but powered down makes no difference.
I have replaced the battery, reset the PRAM, NVRAM and PMU, replaced the start-up disk, removed the PCI card I had added, now I only have the monitor, keyboard/mouse and network connected, but the problem persists. I cannot see any errors in the logs. I did upgrade to a wired aluminum keyboard before this problem started.
Any suggestions as to what else I could try?
Thanks,
Randy

I wonder how many folks cannot use their original Apple Hardware Test Disk since installing 10.5.6? I can start up with it but all it wants to do is reinstall OS X 10.2. No hardware test.
But back to the problem.....
When you do get it going have you tried the "About this Mac" and checked the tests run there? Especially the memory?
I had the same problem and it turned out to be bad 1G RAM modules - one or both.

  • X1 Carbon Touch: have to push the power button twice to boot the system

This is what always happened when I booted up the computer:
First time when I pressed the power button, the computer was on for just 2-3 seconds showing the "Lenovo" logo, and then automatically went back to power-off with nothing happened further.
And then I pressed the power button again, the computer booted and loaded the operating system without any problem.
Even though I'm able to start the computer in this way eventually, it is very annoying.  It happens every time when I cold started the system (no such a problem if I simply restart the computer).  Anyone knows why I have to push the power button twice to boot the system?  I suspect it's something related to the rapid start technology, but cannot locate the exact reason.  Anyone else has the similar problem?  I have a Windows 8.1 now, but the problem existed when I was still using Windows 8.  After I upgraded to 8.1, the problem still exists.

  • "must power off" msg

    Hi all:
Got a 3-yr old or there abouts G4 powermac mdd. Been a GREAT system, w/ no probs at all.
This morning, however, TWICE.....I got the msg on the monitor (in several languages) "you must power off your system".....or something to that affect.
Both times I complied immediately, & after the 1st time I did repair permissions. Haven't turned back on since the 2nd time.
What causes this? Is this a hardware or software issue? overheating??
would love to get some expert advice on this.
    Thanks!!

    Hi-
The logs are generated automatically. As long as log clearing maintenance has not been performed since the panic, you should have a record.
Open Console, and look through the system logs for the panic log. Select Logs, and then click the triangle to expand /library/logs, and /var/logs.
Should be something in there somewhere.

    Now the Problem:
in the last time I ear that the G4 after clicking on the Login Window on SLEEP is often gone to shutdown. The last week I made this check and the G4 gone to shutdown and after x seconds again ON without external intervention. Was this not a real shutdown (the light on the Power button was NOT PULSING)
    What I have just done:
I resetted trought booting + OF all Boot parameters, I made the CUDA reset, I bought a new PMU Battery and now (all disconnected also the HDs) when I push the Power Botton the Fan TRIES to go but after a microsecond is cutted off power. The last time, while trying to take care of my G4, that it had made a little of work was tonight WHITOUT PMU/Battery I made login, I have seen that THE DATE WAS RIGHT (without PMU-Battery !!!) I just choose the right Display Conf, then I started DiskUtility first CHECK Disk and then I was looking for solutions @apple Support on another machine PUFF the G4 has gone OFF and ON and OFF than I unplugged the POWER cable.
Now I don t know any more, suggestions ?

    G4 QuickSilver 867, G4 PB 867, Classic   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Massimo,
I'm having a bit of a problem with the translation. I think what you're saying is that when you attempt startup, the Mac initially gets only a momentary bit of power, with the red LED lighting briefly, then shutting off, after which nothing happens. Occasionally, the Mac starts to the point where the hard drives begin to spin up, but then they, too, shut down. You would like to try booting to the install disc with the drives disconnected, but can't get far enough along in the startup process to open the optical drive tray.
If what I've said above is correct, you can open your optical drive tray manually. Use a fingernail to open the dust cover of the optical drive and look for a tiny hole on the face of the drive below the tray. If you insert a paperclip straight into this hole and push it firmly, the drive tray will begin to eject. When it comes out far enough to grasp with your fingers, pull it out to extend it fully. Insert the disc and manually push the tray back in. Boot to disc by depressing the "c" key at startup and holding it down until the turning grey cog wheel appears.
To attempt to get the Mac to start, perhaps you should try completely de-energizing and resetting it. Try this, (just leave your hard drives disconnected):
Disconnect everything externally except the power cord.
Touch your finger to a metal slot cover on the back of the Mac as a static discharge precaution, then disconnect the power cord.
    Remove the battery.
Depress and hold the front power button for a five-count.
Fully depress the PMU for a five-count.
Take a thirty-minute break to insure that the internal capacitors are completely discharged.
Reconnect the power cord, monitor, keyboard, and mouse, leaving the battery out.
Attempt startup to the install disc.
Any luck? If so, reinsert the battery, connect the hard drives and boot to disc, launching Disk Utility and running Repair Disk and Repair Permissions. Check the Startup Disk option in the Installer menubar to insure the OS X system on your startup drive is still selected. Then quit the Installer to restart normally to the hard drive. If successful, you can then check the preference files for sleep-wake problem that it seems you were having, if I understood correctly.
BTW - When you get stuck in a situation where the Mac won't respond and you have difficulty powering down, try to avoid pulling the power plug, which can corrupt your files and drive directory if the drive is writing data. Instead, try the restart button if you have to force a complete shutdown. If that fails to work after holding it in for a few seconds, then try the power button. If it still won't power down after holding in the power button, then release it and immediately depress the restart button, which usually works. Pull the power plug on a running Mac only as a last resort. In any event, after any sudden shutdown, it's prudent practice to initially boot back to your Tiger install disc and run Repair Disk on the startup volume. If it isn't handy, then boot to Safe Mode by depressing the shift key at the next startup, which will force a file system check of the startup volume, which is like running Repair Disk without being able to see the results. Another way is to boot to single-user mode (depress & hold cmd+"s" at startup) and run fsck, where you'll be able to see the results of the drive repair.

You don't.  What makes you think you do?

  • URL must be loaded twice to run quiz

I have a quiz I created in Captivate 3. It works fine, except
that when published and you type the link, it seems to load 100%
but doesn't - only the bottom frame appears of the control player.
If you then go to the same URL another time, the entire quiz loads
and works fine. Waiting for it to load the first time doesn't work.
It isn't the connection speed. I think the need to load the URL
twice is a bug or glitch in the program?
I've tested this on 3 Win XP Pro computers, using IE 6 and
IE7, with cable, DSL and T3 connections, all with the same result.
If the temporary file is left in the browser, the quiz works fine.
It is only the first time the quiz is accessed that 2 loads are
needed. It is as if the quiz is not being cached or loaded properly
    the first time.
Any way to work around this?

No need to apologize for using the wrong terminology - so
long as in the end we are talking about the same thing.
Ah yes! We call that bottom element the "playback control".
No surprise in the behavior described, and its appearance only
serves to confirm that the issue is, in fact, a matter of
bandwidth. The reason I say that is because the playback control is
a separate SWF (in your case it is contained in
"TreasureHunt_skin.swf"). It is obviously loading, but the main SWF
is having to cache before playing which - again - indicates the
file size is too large to play until it is cached on your local
    machine.
Note: The preloader you see is probably the
"defaultpreloader.SWF" which is scripted to load 60% before play,
not 100% as you said. The reason this is important is that if the
file is over-large, when 60% has loaded, there may still not be
enough of the SWF content downstreamed to play - as you are seeing.
But on the second attempt, the additional 40% is being received,
    and the movie begins play.
With that in mind, there are two solutions that I can see.
    The
first solution (and the best, in most cases) is to reduce
the size of your project. That means re-creating it at smaller
dimensions (what are the dimensions, by the way?), or
alternatively, to chop the movie into multiple smaller pieces.
Either way, the movie has to be made smaller, if this solution is
    to work.
    The
second solution is to change the preloader so that the full
movie really is downloaded to the end-user's local machine before
play begins (instead of the 60% download demanded by the default
preloader). To do this, try using the preloader named "
ConnectPreloader.SWF". This preloader is set to download 99%
instead of 60%, and that should solve the problem of having to
access the file twice in order to see it play ...
BUT ... be aware that the "wait-time" will be that much
longer while waiting for the preloader to release the movie to the
    viewer.
Best of luck to you, and have a great day, Jimmmie!!

Well, I see a lot is beeing said about run levels and systemd. Like many of you, if I had the use of init, I have to learn more about systemd before to be at ease. For the moment I'm still quiet buffled.
For now, I can give you relevant red or bold lines I find in journalctl -b --full.

    Hi fremley,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This article may be helpful with determining why your Mac Pro doesn't stay in sleep mode:

Some things reset the sleep timers, preventing the computer from sleeping:
Hard drive access (even if you're not using the computer, a running application might be accessing your drive, such as when downloading a large file or listening to music in iTunes)

The User Guide is available at http://support.apple.com/manuals/ or downloadable from iTunes as an iBook.

    Hi Jeff,
Tried to reply with my iPhone but not easy! Anyway, back on the laptop now. Yes the crash was bad but Tek support at Prism Sound was really good. In the end I rebuilt the whole system on a new disk which took a couple of days with all the plugins, softsynths etc.... but there seemed to be no alternative in my case, and this was agreed with Prism sound as being the only alternative left to me. I still don't really know what caused the crash but ML and Orpheus are both working fine now. Let's face it, you'll have to update at sometime..maybe best to pick some time between projects On balance, I suspect that my problems were unique to my system and that your installation will go ok.
    Hope it goes well,
    Rick

  • While we create Sales order in CRM for Madhya Pradesh State JIVP (VAT Payable) showing twice in order

    Dear SAP,
While we create Sales order in CRM for Madhya Pradesh State JIVP (VAT Payable) showing twice in order, but calculation has taken one time i.e. 14%, only JIVP displaying twice (Attached Screen shot S3.JPG) in CRM order, when comes to ECC side it is showing correct entry (Attached Screen shot S4.JPG) .
Due to duplicate condition records exist in CRM table CNCCRMPRCUS956 (Attached Screen shot S1 & S2.JPG).
This happens for MP state, as duplicate entry exist with MP state only,
Please guide us to resolve the same.
    Regards,
    JK

    Hi JK,
There is two thing. first is that when you create a sales order very same time pricing conditions added in the transaction as per the pricing procedure add for transaction type. these pricing procedures are transaction type specific not state or country specific so it will work. check here you are getting duplicate condition ?
When ever you add material in the transaction that very time one the basis of the pricing condition added in the transaction IPC method do pricing. check after adding material in transaction duplicate condition is coming ?
Secondly whenever the document replicates in ERP re-pricing again happening on conditions so theses conditions get corrected in ERP. Here if document is re-priced then system will consider it as change so again there suppose to be Bdocs get created from ERP to CRM again overwrite document so condition will be synchronized in CRM . I would request check the same too and revert.
    Thanks,
    Prem,

    Great clue Lukas...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

Hey. I recently got DVDSP4. I was using the much older DVDSP1.5 without any problems.
anyway. My problem is, whenever I try to export into an mpeg2 file it gives me this lame serial message....
"DVD Studio Pro must be serialized first in order to run Quicktime MPEG Encoder"
I did a search, and it seems others have ran into this same problem. but there was no solution that I read....
I have quicktime pro 7, but am editing with the very old final cut pro 3.
however, even exporting into a seperate .mov and quitting FCP3 all together, and just trying to export directly from quicktime does not work.
is there any straight answers for this problem? other people have encountered it too obviously....
    please help....

Since you have DVDSP4, I don't understand why you can't just use Compressor rather than exporting MPEG2 from QT Player.

I don't think so, this feature is missing in Flat File resource and required for reconciling.
You will be more lucky with XML File resource (you must add it manually to resource types: class com.waveset.adapter.XMLResourceAdapter). It requires specific structure of file, so maybe can be more easier fill in some DB table...
