MUST READ!

Thanks for viewing this. Now I'm considering buying a 5G iPod after owning a 3G iPod bought in May '04. Now I'm slightly apprehensive about purchasing another iPod because of numerous problems (track skipping, constant freezing/crashing etc.) and two replacements that became defective within months.
I'd like to know if this new iPod is any better and whether anyone has had any problems with their new iPod video and if so if could you post them here for my benefit.
Thanks
Sherman

  • RMAN or imp/exp: Which is good!  A must read.

    Hi,
I am using Oracle XE both in the office and at home. I am wondering since I am developing also during free hours at night, I'd rather bring at home all my databases/schemas/tables (and data) thru USB/DVD & upload it to my Oracle XE at home so that I can continue my work. And once I get up in the morning, all changes I made, I will still be able to upload it to my office to cont. my work by doing the same thing. So on and on.
I hope you could help me. Thanks!
    Mike

You can have a subject stating "must read" only if you, on your own, have done some important development or found out a bug in Oracle or anything (related to Oracle) which is not published till date.
Rest all are forum discussion threads and need not be a "must read".
    You are welcome.

  • Looking for must-read programming reference material

I am relatively new to programming and would like a reading list of must-read programming references. I know several languages, but I am not looking for materials about any particular language; instead, I would like to read up on more fundamental things such as programming concepts, programming algorithms, programming paradigms,  computer architectures, programming style, etc. What are the classic, must-read books and articles that I should begin reading? Thank you for your suggestions.

I've never used assembly for a 64-bit system, but I'm sure most of the same concepts apply.  In fact I'm pretty sure any change is analogous to the change from 16 to 32 which wasn't that drastic.
With assembly language, learning the core concepts is the biggest step, the difference between 16 and 32 bit wasn't like learning a new language, rather it was just having more and bigger registers.  I don't do any actual programming in assembly - I dabbled a bit for fun, but I dont 'use' it.  But the concepts I learned through assembly have helped me in every other programming language.  Given that, I'm sure a book on 32-bit assembly would be useful for a 64-bit system.
Consider too that assembly is a bit of a dying art.  Pair that with the fact that 64-bit systems are relatively new, and there won't be many people who can write a quality book about their lifetime of experience with 64-bit assembly.
Lastly, (in this very disorganized listing of barely related points), 32-bit to 64-bit is also a trivial change compared to the various instruction sets that have been used.  If/when you understand the similarities and differences between the various assembly languages and instruction sets, is when you really start using the strengths of your particular architecture.  (I'm tempted to make a Matrix reference "There is no spoon").  My favorite assembly languages, just for the fun of it, are One-Instruction-Set systems.  When I realized that one single instruction used repeatedly can create the diversity of programs we use ... I was in geek heaven.  I put that day on par with learning about hardware-software interchangability, and the fact that our modern computers are made up of a vast series of only one type of logic gate ... and the day I learned some lamba calculus ... (end geekgasm)
Anyhow, learning to 'think' in assembly language can help all your programming (IMHO) regardless of whether you ever speak to your computer in that language.  So, yes, I'd say the 32-bit book would be worth reading even if your current computer is 64.

If it says 'Open' in the App Store, then it's on your device.  What happens when you press the 'Open' button in the App Store?
The App is on your phone, somewhere.  Use Spotlight to find it, or you can reset your Home Screen layout, and then you'll definitely find it.

  • SQL Server JDBC Must read columns in order?

Is this some kind of sick joke?
If I use rs.getString() to retrieve columns by name from the data base, they must be retrieved exactly in the order that they appear in the actual database, or else an error will result.
Someone please tell me that this is not the case.

Some JDBC drivers make that restriction. Apparently the JDBC specification allows them to do so. So, it's possible that the SQL Server driver does that, and your post implies that it does.

  • A must read for everyone....

The moderators have asked me to leave this forum and not return. I will respect their wishes and do just that.
What I won't tolerate is their complete lack of any answer to the honest and legitimate questions I have posed to them. In particular, as to why these moderators here are the only ones who claim that the GeForce 4 chipset based vga cards require so much power.
Show me some proof. Maybe an article on a PC vendor's website or a magazine article that backs up your claim. Even a vga card vendor or retailer that lists the power requirements???
You have failed miserably in the fact that you completely play dumb and ignore my questions. Maybe you are that dumb, I'm not sure.
You owe it to every person who comes here looking for help, to give them truthful statements and advice. If you can't, then don't say anything. There are many posts here where people ask for help on their vga cards and the knee-jerk response is "you need a bigger power supply". Syas who? Back it up!! Look through the threads and note how many people you have said that to whom go and spend their money on a new psu, on your recommendation, just to post that they STILL have the same problem.
The moderators here just regurgitate the same lame questionable solutions.
My advice to anyone seeking help here is to do your own homework before wasting money on these "solutions". Join another forum not related to MSI. Find one for NVidia. Or a general tech support forum like techimo. Even ask your local coputer parts stores.
I am not debating the benefits of having a large power supply.
I am, however, questioning your intelligence level and your commitment to helping others versus stroking your own ego.
I will now leave you in peace to say whatever you like about me, but rest assured, after I am done, someone from MSI will be examining this board and it's propensity for distributing inaccurate solutions as related to their products. I am sure MSI will be thrilled with their reputation being associated with inadequacy and unhappy customers

What I won't tolerate is their complete lack of any answer to the honest and legitimate questions I have posed to them. In particular, as to why these moderators here are the only ones who claim that the GeForce 4 chipset based vga cards require so much power.
It has been a known issue and has become one of the top solutions to many problems in and out of these forums. In fact, I would say approximately 50% of the time it is an inadequate power supply.
Ever Since the Athlon XP there have been serious issues with inadequate power supplies.
It became obvious that with the current peripherals populating today's PC's the power requirements have increased in performance based systems. Add a GF4 to the mix and it can cripple many supposed 300w power supplies.
If you called my reseller he'd tell you straight out that his tech recommends two or three brands of PSU that are rated over 400w with a AMDXP and GF4 combo, but won't tell you about the combined power requirement because it's like a trade secret.
Telling that to the layman or n00b usually results in a blank stare and that "I don't get it look" I often get from my coworkers when I try to explain anything technical.
Unfortunately, the generic answer from many PC shops is you must have at least a 300w power supply, and again we have the dilemma, whereas there is no set standard, and some will handle the requirements, then, other claimed 300 watters fail miserably and often cause damage to the PC.
Many of these shops don't build the high end systems that we often see in these forums and if they do, it's with tried and true hardware that works together.
There are times when we are wrong but in this medium (forum) it is virtually impossible to be correct in diagnosis all the time, as we cannot be present while troubleshooting.
In troubleshooting PC's and building them yourself without knowledge of these things, leads to many different outcomes.
    1.   you get lucky and the build goes well because you did a little homework before doing so.
    2.   You have problems that lead you to a medium such as this where you will get varied replies just as you would if you were to call a technician. Possibly solving your problem or leading you down the wrong path.
    Ad infinitum.............
Either way, you take the risk of something not performing properly.
Symptoms can be the same for several problems that are encountered. The power supply is more often the solution than not. So my reasoning at least, is why not eliminate the problem before it happens. Remove it from the equation, and if you play your cards right when you purchase the PSU (that may not be the problem).
and you make sure you know the return policy should you not need it, you can then return it, and get your money back.
These are the risks you take when putting together a system or upgrading, novice or not.
You claim to be skilled in troubleshooting, but are you that naive in believing it's that cut and dry?
Neither I nor any of the other mods will tolerate your arrogance and insults to our intelligence, perhaps it is you who need to change your perception.
Offer your skills and help instead of your utter lack of respect. If it is a fight you are looking for, this is not the place or the medium in which to do it, and you have  underestimated your opponent.

  • A Must Read for all current and future Final Cut Pro X users

Take a breath people, as this article states, Final Cut Pro X IS NOT an upgrade to Final Cut Pro 7, it is an entirely new program. Much like Final Cut Pro 1 was the start of a new revolution in NLE video editing, Final Cut Pro X is the beginning of a new revolution. Anyone that has a clue of what they are doing or talking about when it comes to professional workflows knows you can't expect to switch to a new product and a new workflow from day 1. There is an evolutionary process to this, just like there was when the first Final Cut Studio came out, and then version 2 and then version 3 or any new version of OS X for that matter. It will take time for third-party developers to catch up just as it did with every other major release.  In the meantime, you don't change a major piece of your workflow that your business or jobs depend on until that major piece has been out, tested and guarunteed to work for YOUR workflow, PERIOD! If you've purchased final cut pro X already, take this time to start learning a new way of looking at editing, a new way of working while the software catches up to the standards and features that every professional desires. If you havn't purchased it yet, either do so knowing what your getting right now, or simply wait for the evolutionary process to run its coarse.
This is the way the world of software works people, anyone that doesn't understand this, frankly, doesn't have a clue.
    http://library.creativecow.net/adcock_gary/FCPX/1

Original post: "Anyone that has a clue of what they are doing or talking about when it comes to professional workflows knows you can't expect to switch to a new product and a new workflow from day 1."
Even this shows ignorance of the professional marketplace. The fundamental workflow of the professional editor hasn't changed in 80+ years: The shots get delivered to the Editor, the Editor edits the shots and delivers the results. While I can see how editing software can change the way this fundamental workflow is accomplished, it will not change the fundamental workflow of movie making or programme itself. And therein lies the massive problem with FCPX! However Apple decides to redefine the workflow of how the professional editor edits, it must also provide the basic tools which allow the Editor to take delivery of the shots and make delivery to the other personnel involved in making the film. In a professional environment there are others with whom you must collaborate, when was the last time you saw film or TV credits where only one person was listed? Apple has decided NOT to incorporate in FCPX the fundamental tools which allow for the accepting and delivery of materials within the professional environment using internationally accepted standards. Apple has also left out a range of other essential features required by professionals.
FCPX is an excellently placed product. It's exactly what the makers of wedding DVDs, youtube contributors and the serious home enthusiasts has been lacking; an easy to use yet powerful and semi-automated video maker. It's an iMovie Plus, a Final Cut Express X, it fills a hole in the market and will be of benefit to hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of people (far more potential customers than the relatively limited market of professional editors!). Unfortunately, what it is NOT is a Final Cut Pro X!! Because except for wedding DVDs, p*rn movies and a few other very simple editing jobs, it is unusable for the vast majority of professional editing situations.
It seems to me there are two reasons why so many people are so angry about FCPX. The first is that it is called Final Cut Pro X (Final Cut Professional 10) and has been marketed to everyone (including professional editors) as an upgrade from FCP7, this is at least misleading and at worst probably borders on misrepresentation. The second reason is that new features like iMovie import and Vimeo and Youtube export have been given prominence, while at the same time basic professional functionality has been removed. This is a very clear indication that the Final Cut software has been repositioned towards the prosumer market and away from the professional market. This is a real kick in the teeth for those who have built their careers and business around this software and Apple has made the situation worse by marketing this kick in the teeth as a major improvement?!
I've seen messages in other threads from happy amateurs telling the professionals to stop b*tching as FCP7 still works and they can continue using that version. This again demonstrates ignorance of the highly competitive nature of the professional editing marketplace. You need to be doing it better and more efficiently than the next editor. FCP7 has been in need of an update for a few years now, the longer professional editors stick with FCP7, the further behind the competition they will fall. It seems clear that for the foreseeable future FCP7 is Apple's last professional video editing software which means a considerable outlay for Editors, to buy new systems, new software and retrain themselves and employees. It's likely that the release of FCPX and the way it has been marketed will make life very difficult for many editors and may even ultimately cost some their livelihoods.

  • A "must read"... Photoshop for Video

I highly recommend 'Photoshop for Video' by Richard Harrington (Focal Press) - 3rd edition.
I have never seen or read any better book on Photoshop for the video editor / artist. It is outstanding in the way this book relates PS to video and the technologies video editors work with.
Book relates PS to Premiere and After Effects mainly but also shows integration to Avid, FCP, Combustion etc.
Nice explanation how to set up PS for video and also how to get output to an external monitor. Great tips and ideas. Comes with a DVD full of resources.
    A must have.

    Craig,
Appreciate the rec.. With all of my PS tomes, none really cover PS for Video, and I had not seen this one. Even "Layers," and "PhotoShop" magazines, hardly cover the subject, concentrating more on print, or Web work. Heading to Amazon, as I type.

  • Girlfriend issues - 6120 ( Must read )

    So here's the story,
In relation to my girlfriend, I really do trust her in the sense that she's not fooling around with anyone else. That said, I think she's still talking to old friends and to be honest, I really couldn't care less; that is until I had reason to believe she was hiding things from me on her phone.
Not too long ago, I had to use her phone to call mine as it was no where to be found. I thought to myself, I'll just go to dialled numbers and to my amazement, I was the only number in the dialled list.
I then checked the received / missed calls and they were mostly dated on the same date; lets use 01/12/08 as an example. I thought to myself, "oh, she must only have a daily call log activated on her phone."
That is until I noticed there were one or two calls (again an example seeing as we're using 01/12/08 as a scenario date) from 30/11/08.
So the question is, with the 6120, is it possible to set a call log history for two (2) days? I didn't think it was possible; that said, I could be wrong. If it's not possible, does anyone know what the call log history settings are? I mean is it possible to set it for 1 day, 10 days, 30 days?
To me, it seems like she's deleting numbers as she doesn't want me knowing exactly who she's talking to. Her call log ALWAYS shows calls from the current day and at times, only a few from the day before. Again, i'm not too familiar with this phone and it may simply be a glitch where if you set your call log history for one day, at times, it may keep calls from the previous day.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
TL;DR (Too long didn't read version)
With the 6120, can you set your call log history for 2 days, or does it jump from 1 day to 10 days or something in between?

Not sure if it's possible to set the log for 2 days, I know 30 days is definitely one of the options.
YES, she can delete numbers from her calling/receiving history, but that's not the only place you can check.... AHA !!!!!
There is another view of the log that shows ALL communications (voice, data, voip, etc.)
When you delete numbers from the usual calling history, they don't automatically get deleted from the log, you have to delete them manually from the log also.
So here's what you do; if you have checked the LOG, and notice that the numbers there pretty much match up with the numbers in the CALLING HISTORY, it means 1 of 2 things:
    1) She is NOT cheating on you
    2) She is actually quite smart and deleting numbers in both places

  • Help, Newbie needs ability to access work web page , must read "iform html tag "

Hello, we recently got a blackberry curve 8330, carrier verizon.  My husband must be able to get to his work web site which apparently requires that our browser support "iframe html tag".  We have upgraded as to what verizon supports which is v4.3.0.127 (platform 3.1.0.72).  Verizon tech support said that their are other OS available for blackberry that they do not support (although they did not tell me where/who/what).  They said we could purchase/download them and then we would just have to receive tech support from that company rather than verizon.
By the way, we already have the boxes checked under browser options:  support javascript, allow javascript popups, support html tables, and show images on wml & html pages.
Does anyone know what these OS are, where to find them, etc?  Does blackberry have a version we could purchase/download?
    Thank you!

I have Verizon as well, I have read that OS 4.5 (latest for 8330 Curve) will be out in August.
While this is not a recommendation to upgrade to an unsupported OS, if you need it you can follow the link below.
Basically it's a procedure for downloading and installing OS 4.5. It's free by the way!

  • Probook 6540b - Broken screen/ cover latch - Must Read!

Has anyone had the latch on their laptop break?
I purchased a  Probook 6540b mid 2010 and about three months later one of the hooks on the back of the latch broke causing the latch to constantly fall out. I called HP and lodged a case with them, and got a response from them saying that no one else has reported this issue with this model notebook, therefore it must have been caused by abuse. Lame excuse...
I would be interested to see if anyone else has had this problem.
I work for a technology company that designs industrial equipment for Substations, and chatted with one of my design colleagues about it and he was bemused by HP's response. It seems to us that it is a poor design.
I have bought 4 HP laptops in the past 3 years and intend to buy 2 more within the next twelve months. I figure if HP won't fix a 50 cent part on a notebook, then if something more serious happens they are even more likely to try and dodge the bullet. I think I'll swap to Toshiba instead.

Just for the records for HP: My 6560b has exactly the same problem as described above: Front cover latch broken. We've used it for about two years before it happened (only home use, no carrying arround). I do not expect a guarantee case after that time but was looking for a spare part. I'm going to probably cut off the closing hooks before the other side of the latch also brakes.

  • My MacBook Pro SAD experience: MUST READ if you are about to get 1.

Things to clarify at the beginning:
    1. im not an english native speaker so try not be too picky for my language.
    2. im not a mac hater and i've own a powerbook 17 1.5g as well as a iMac G5
    Here we go:
    1. I've spent £2000+ to get my top spec MacBook Pro (2.16/2G/7200rpm) so i'm kinda expecting for a super computer, am i wrong?
    2. My first unit failed me on the 4th day of purchase, after I spend 2 entire days to load all the software up, immigrate all my emails and academic papers from my SONY FE11s, it failed. The system won't start up and i can't even see the Apple logo after press the power button. I bring it to Regent Street Apple Store, and the genius told me that it is because my DVD is stucked inside and the MacBook pro iS KEEP READING it instead of the Hard drive.
Then we tried holding C, Mouse Button, F12, Eject, reset PRAM, PMU and the disc just woudn't came out (a standard dvd). Then they said they'll crack the machine open to get the disc out and they'll give me a brand new replacement right away. ( You can see how stupid is MacBook Pro's firmware designed, even it IS the disc's faul, it should be able to skip reading it after say 30 seconds or so and go straight on to the harddisc right? )
The genius said that they will give me a call once they managed to get the thing booted and transfer the original data to my new MBP. The next day i get a call, saying that all the HARDDISC DATA was "destoried" and "Unrecoverable"... and I've default my FE11S sony and put it on eBay. so i don't manage to keep a copy of my files.
    3. Heat issue.
No matter what people tell you, don't believe it. go to any apple store in the afternoon or evening while their display machines have been running for several hours. touch the bottom of the screen and the body. It burns your finger. Now i'm using my macbook pro on iCurve (which hangs the mbp in the middle of the air and make a perfect cooling condition) and the room temp is around 15c. The machine is still EXTERMELY HOT even i just use it to browse web for 30 minutes. I did not dare to touch the bottom of the screen (where the MacBook Pro words are displayed), and it will be a GREAT PAIN if you insist to touch that thing for over 2 seconds and want to DEMONOSTRATE it is safe.
    4. Stability
Yes i know we Mac users always teasing around with Windows Bluescreens, but the macbook pro i've got in hand hangs every one or two days AND without famous "four langauge error message". It just hangs there like a overclocked PC! i'll have to hold the powerbutton and get it shut.
    5. Memory consumption
Rosetta is one of the biggest fat lie that apple have made. without 2 gig ram don't dream to use over 2 ppc programmes at the same time.. just let me show you something ( yes i was watching a live tv show in safari hence the cpu and memory consumption, but that is still far more than i will expect ) 22mb LEFT with ONE PPC programme on ... I only notice this because i was trying to mount a disc image and failed with error msg "too many applications running"? is it too many for a £2000+ coreduo and 2g ram laptop? take a look at the screen shot and judge it yourself.
With the great pile of "INACTIVE MEMORY", i really start to doubt the ability that mac os x tiger handels the memories. After the screen shot i've shut down all the running applications, then i switched the activity monitor back on, guess what, i only get less than 200 mb free memory, the rest are still inactive or locked up....
    CONCLUSION:
Yes the macbook pro is superbly fast, espcially after i got my aperture 1.1 upgrade on it and compare with my powerbook running version 1.0. yes it opens itunes in 2 seconds and make me feel like i was merely maximize the window from hiding. BUT HEY... this computer cost me over £2000 (that's about $30000?) and it's a laptop that you can't leave it on your lap, a macintosh that is not as stable as a windows server 2003 (that's wat i got on my only pc , im a geek and i own a pile of different computers). i didn't want to mention the whine and other famous bugs because that's not an issue to a geek whos room is filled with eletronic noises and i use wired connection for maximum speed so my airport wont drop.
but i'd rather send my powerbook 17 to daystar and get a 2.0 G powerg4 upgrade if i have a second chance.
    over.

You misunderstand the memory management scheme and misinterpret the display you're seeing.
To start with, free memory is wasted memory. Once some disk contents have been brought in, it is wasteful to discard that data just to make the RAM that it occupied "free." Inactive memory is memory that is not currently used, can be given to an application that needs it without doing any disk I/O (or used as a destination for reading disk content) but which currently holds disk data that might be useful in the future. I.e., it's file content of some sort.
To get a better idea of how Mac OS X manages RAM and how to interpret the Activity Monitory dispaly, see this tech note: Mac OS X: Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor.
Rosetta is indeed memory hungry, but it's an interim solution. With 2 GB of RAM installed, you can run a lot of applications with alacrity.
Lastly, your Safari, an Intel-native application, is currently using 2 GB. This is a known issue with Safari, though it seems to me that it has gotten better since 2.0.3 was released in 10.4.6. Still, it's a bit of a memory hog, to be sure. Now that Firefox, Camino and Seamonkey are all available in Universal (Intel native) forms, you have alternatives. Firefox seems a lot more parsimonious when it comes to RAM.

  • Leopard and Adobe CS3 Products. Design and Video Production a must read.

    Adobe posted this pdf. http://www.adobe.com/support/products/pdfs/leopardsupport.pdf
Should answer any questions on compatibility.
Web designers are safe if you use CS3. Studio 8, your out of luck.
InDesign CS3, Photoshop CS3, Illustrator CS3 is safe. CS2 your out of luck.
After Effects CS3 must use update.....slated for December.
Acrobat Pro 8, and any of Adobe video and sound production apps the same as After Effects.
    Regards,
    Ed

    Hello,
Thank you very much for the answers, but for me it is already to late. I tried to install Tiger again, to be able to install Adobe Photoshop CS3 and then upgrade, but my iMac won't boot from the Tiger DVD even though it starts from the Leopard DVD. I have no glue what I am doing wrong. I pressed the "D" key during the boot - as stated in my manual and nothing happens. The machine just start Leopard from hard drive again.
I also tried to insert the Tiger DVD while Leopard is running and then choose the Tiger installer, but it tells me, that it can not install on my machine. I do not understand anything.
As far as I understand from Adobe, there should not be any problem to install Adobe Photoshop CS3. Nevertheless it definitely does not install on my machine (only the "shared components").
    Kind regards,
    Cornelia
