Must restart mac so internet works

When I want to use my school or house internet I have to restart my mac, I don't know why but when I run Safari it says that connection to Internet failed, so I have to close all my work, all the documents I'm using to do my work, everything, which is V-E-R-Y annoying because when it restarts I have to open all that stuff again just to keep doing my work, which takes me like 30 minutes of my time (which I consider is a waste of time) just to continue my work, while normal people just uses internet normally
This happens in my house and in my school and has happened in some other places, so I really think the problem is coming from my Mac. I have been tolerating this problems since like 8 months ago, but now that I am getting a lot of more work from my school it is becoming very frustating to have to close all my stuff just to open safari so I can check the rest of the homework.
My macbook is a weird one, is the one that now is Macbook Pro but when I bought it, it was just Macbook, it's the aluminium one with illuminated keyboard, and I repeat is NOT Macbook pro. I guess I'm running OSX Leopard, the one with a purple/black galaxy background desktop.
Any help will be very appreciated, thanks alot!
Josh

Rather than do the whole shut-down and restart thing, will it work if you simply turn your airport on and off?
Or how about if you create different locations in System Preferences -> Networks, one for home, one for school, and one for out at like coffee shops or whatever. When you get to the locations, go to System Preferences, change the locations in the Network drop-down menu, and click Apply.
In addition, with the different locations in System Preferences, you can have any specific settings--proxies and what not--that might be required at school or home.

  • Aperture won't launch a second time... must restart Mac

I have a huge amount of photos; so many that I had to break the library down into several smaller ones.
Until yesterday, everything worked fine. I could open Aperture by double clicking on any library or switch between them with ease.
Today, however, things aren't working so well.
When I open Aperture for the first time after a fresh restart of my iMac, it works as you would expect. Library opens and it's business as usual. Problem is, if I try to switch between libraries or if I quit Aperture and try to open it again, I get a small dialog box saying:
"Opening Aperture Library" but the library never opens; eventually Aperture stops responding and I have to force quit. The only way to get Aperture to open after this is to restart the iMac.

Here are a few things I have tried:
+ try opening a library from a different user account on the iMac: I am able to open, close, switch, etc... normally
+ connect the external hard drive with my libraries to a different Mac; same as using a different user account, Aperture seems to function normally
This leads me to believe there is something wrong wit my user account on the iMac.
My user account name is "rich"
I went into rich/Library/Application Support/Aperture and trashed everything. Unfortunately I have to reinstall my plug ins now (and all my watermarks, export settings and print settings argggh!), but that seemed only to help for a short time. After using Aperture for a few hours, the problem came back.
    This is immensely frustrating!
    I am using an iMac 27" 2.93GHz i7 with 8GB RAM, OS 10.6.6 and Aperture 3.1.1

While I see the train of thought that led to that theory, you appear don't mention having tried a standard library trouble-shooting step. Have you used the "Aperture Library First Aid tools", as documented here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805 ? If I was experiencing the problems you've described, I'd try the tools on both the Aperture library you work with initially and the one which you fail to be able to swap to later on.
One other thought occurs to me. It might be nothing, can easily be ruled out. Is it possible that this is (still) a disk space issue? And I mean either your boot drive or the external drive containing your libraries. How much space is free on each drive when you've got Aperture up and running? If you don't want to try the First Aid tools, it might be worth trying to remember to check the free disk space while Aperture is running - immediately before you finish with the first library.
I hope these thoughts put you on the road to a solution...

  • Mac loses internet after wake from sleep, still connected to router

    Hi All,
So, I see similar threads, but I'm not sure if this is the same problem. Here's what happening:
-When I wake my Mac from sleep it usually (but not always) loses its internet (but not wifi) connection.
-The loss happens 10-15 seconds AFTER it wakes up. If I go to Safari/Firefox right after it wakes up, I can bring up webpages fine for about 10 seconds. Then, suddenly, pages stop loading.
-The wifi stays connected (I have an airport router) the whole time, and if I go to the airport utility, everything looks fine.
-I know this is not a problem with my internet or my router because I have tried opening web pages on both my iPhone (connected to wifi with cellular off) as well as my PC laptop (I only have it for one program that the company does not make for the Mac and I need for work, haha), and both browse the internet just fine even though my Mac says there is no internet.
-If I restart my Mac, the internet works fine. This is a simple fix, however it's also annoying to have to do it all the time.
-This is happening in different locations, not just on my wifi. It happens in coffee shops, hotels, and airports too.
-Not sure if this is related, but I have also been getting messages in iTunes saying that I need to authorize my computer or apps will be deleted.
-I completely deleted Norton, as I had a hunch it was responsible for this problem (since the internet was disconnecting right after getting an "add location" message from that program). However, even with it completely off my computer, I'm still having the issues.
    Any suggestions???

What Mac OSX version are you running? "iOS 8.2" as currently shown in your profile cannot run on any Mac computer, only Apple mobile devices.
If your computer has automatically connected to a lot of networks, say, during travel, that might hinder waking as the computer looks for what networks it remembers. Go to System Preferneces > Network and select your wirelss connection from the left-hand pane. Then click the "Advanced" button in the main pain. That will show the list of networks you Mac has stored:
There could be a lot. Clear out all networks stored there except those you use on a weekly basis. The little box with the "-" icon clears unwanted networks. Restart the computer and see if thising work better.
-I completely deleted Norton, as I had a hunch it was responsible for this problem (since the internet was disconnecting right after getting an "add location" message from that program). However, even with it completely off my computer, I'm still having the issues.
Download and run Etrecheck, a safe way to post a snapshot of your config without revealing any personal information. I'm concerned you did not get all of Norton, or have some other dreck like CleanMyMac or MacKeeper lurking.

  • ITunes RADIO is not working.  "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again." Try as I may, as many as ten attempts, trying to connect after restart, after shutdown, nothing works. Just so -  iTu

    iTunes RADIO is not working.
“iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again.” Try as I may, as many as ten attempts, trying to connect after restart, after shutdown, nothing works. Just so …
iTunes STORE not “connectable” with my otherwise perfectly-working internet connection, viable, up and running for all other uses.
Simply put, firstly, I can't connect to the internet when I click on Radio.  People are quite suspicious that this is Apple incompetence or your company's famous arrogance for this commonly-suffered problem that you won't or “can’t” fix.
Read the many web comments and you won’t be pleased with yourselves: the suspicion is that if you ruin internet radio on iTunes, Apple will somehow make more money on music downloads, etc. Bull.
Also, thirdly, my old playlist of 20 or so internet radio stations in the Ambient category STILL PLAYS !
Then fourth, I installed the latest available version of QuickTime Player 7.app Version 7.6.6 but it didn’t solve the problem either. I had QuickTime Player.app Version 10.2, but substituted what Apple website said was the latest, LOWER NUMBERED QuickTime Player version of 7.6.6
Fifth, I can't connect to iTunes store no matter what I do or what user group's advice I try. So I can’t buy or download anything from iTunes. Bad for business.
Sixth, I updated to the latest version of iTunes but this weird problem remains. All suggested Apple fixes or user group fixes are useless. Where is Apple’s famous technical competency, vaunted customer support?, and user-friendly product reputation? Get it back, please.
Solve this problem of yours ASAP for us, your numerous disgruntled, dissatisfied customers of iTunes. You can do better, should, and really –in all fairness- must.

NOTE:  no password for iTunes exists in my Keychain. Is this a problem?
Apple ACCOUNT ID, and iTunes ID password, works but not to access iTunes with my healthy internet connection.
Apple store id It works via direct internet connetion but not through iTunes.  Very strange.

    Try this:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Safari is not working on the Mac. Internet is fine, mail, App Store etc all working and connecting to Internet fine. Done the latest software update, still not working. When selecting a web address from bookmarks or typing in search bar, partial blue bar.

Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the malfunctioning extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. That will revert its settings to the defaults.

Basic Troubleshooting Steps when all else fails
    - Quit the App by opening multi-tasking bar, and swiping the App upward to make it disappear.  (For iOS 6 older, hold down the icon for the App for about 3-5 seconds, and then tap the red circle with the white minus sign.)
    - Relaunch the App and try again.
    - Restart the device. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    - Reset the device. (Same article as above.)
    - Reset All Settings (Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings)
    - Restore from backup. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766 (If you don't have a backup, make one now, then skip to the next step.)
    - Restore as new device. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137  For this step, do not re-download ANYTHING, and do not sign into your Apple ID.
    - Test the issue after each step.  If the last one does not resolve the issue, it is likely a hardware problem.

  • Many of my System Preferences will no longer work after installing Mountain Lion. Software update, startup disk, iCloud, etc. no longer will launch. I keep getting a drop down window saying I must restart system preferences in order to use. No go!

Many of my System Preferences will no longer work after installing Mountain Lion. Software Update, Startup Disk, iCloud, Time Machine, Notifications, etc. no longer will launch even though they do show their icons in the system preferences window. I keep getting a drop down window saying I must restart system preferences in order to use with a "Cancel" or "OK" choice. After I click on "OK" the window just keeps reappearing with the same choices and the pane I wish to use still remains inoperative. Third party preference panes DO work.
Reinstalling OSX Mountain Lion did not help. Neither did throwing away preferences.plist.

    Hi Jeff,
Tried to reply with my iPhone but not easy! Anyway, back on the laptop now. Yes the crash was bad but Tek support at Prism Sound was really good. In the end I rebuilt the whole system on a new disk which took a couple of days with all the plugins, softsynths etc.... but there seemed to be no alternative in my case, and this was agreed with Prism sound as being the only alternative left to me. I still don't really know what caused the crash but ML and Orpheus are both working fine now. Let's face it, you'll have to update at sometime..maybe best to pick some time between projects On balance, I suspect that my problems were unique to my system and that your installation will go ok.
    Hope it goes well,
    Rick

  • Mac wireless internet won't work, but PC will. Help??

I recently joined a sorority and whenever I am at my sorority house studying, it takes my macbook pro an average of a half an hour to connect to the wireless internet. When it finally connects, it seems random. I cannot figure out what makes it suddenly work. Sometimes I wait so long for it to connect that I am forced to give up. Other girls who live in the house have some issues, but not as many as me and the girls who have PCs don't have any issues. Again, the girls who own PCs don't have ANY issues with the wireless internet. Also, my internet works fine on campus, in my apartment, at my parents house, etc...
Because I don't have any control over the internet I don't know what kind of router it is or anything, which I know would be helpful. However this just seems like such a specific problem that I was wondering if anybody had any ideas to make it work. I've gone through the network diagnostics numerous times and have done what I can within the network preferences.
I'm supposed to live in the house in the fall. Someone please help!
    Thanks!
    Paige

Do you have a choice of more than one wireless network?  If you hold down an "option" key when you pull down the AirPort menu bar item, what value do you see for "RSSI"?

  • Immediate "You must restart your mac" message

    Hi Folks,
I have a venerable dual 1.25GHz G4 MDD which has just decided not to start-up today. Apparently it was extremely noisy (that is noisier than usual) just before it was shutdown and restarted a few minutes later.
Now what happens is that a few seconds into the start-up sequence I get the grey curtain fall across the screen with the "You must restart..." message. I have tried booting from the original Leopard disk with the "C" key held down and get the same result. I tried the Drive Genius emergency boot disk - same result. I tried putting my MBP into target disk mode and booting from that over firewire - same result.
During my playing around and multiple restarts I noticed something strange. If I hold the power key on the MDD down longer than usual I get a long tone then the power key flashes. I don't know what this means and so don't know if it is telling me something I should be paying attention to.
If anyone knows what the tone and flashing means I'd like to hear from you. If anyone has any suggestions as to what may actually be wrong with the MDD - and how to fix it - I'd love to hear from you too.
    Cheers,
    Grant
PS. Happy New Year to you all.

    Hi Again,
First of all, thanks to all who looked at my question. I guess it is a tough one as I got no replies. Not sure that this machine is worth taking to be repaired which is a shame as I can't afford to replace it for a while. I thought I would reply to comment on my second question about the tone I got:

  • Macbk pro 2010 won't wake after sleep, must restart twice to get it working

If I close the macbook or leave it open for too long the screen goes black and I must restart it via the power button 2 times before it starts up normally.  On the first restart, the computer shuts down but when starting back up the screen stays asleep, so must shut down again.  OS X 10.9.5, tried running apple hardware test (AHT) but couldn't get the icon to show up.  No idea what to do...

OK, 10.6.7 update did NOT fix the issue.
So before putting mbp to sleep last night, I did a SMC reset procedure.
This morning when it woke up, it detected the cable immediately.
    Thanks leroydouglas.

  • Need help with MacBook. "You must restart your computer..."

So I just got a new MBP 13" back in April. Then a few weeks ago, I started getting these "You must restart" crashes out of nowhere. They weren't really specific to any task I was doing, but I noticed it happened most either while browsing the internet, or directly when opening the lid after it slept over night. It was just a bunch of random Kernal Panics that didn't really point to one specific thing. I suspected Google Chrome, but after an uninstall (deleting complete Chrome folder) and reinstall, still happened. Then just removed Chrome altogether and went to Safari, still happened.
Went to the genius bar and they did a few things that didn't work and said that they wanted to do a fresh install next. I hadn't backed up my system, so I bought an external, picked up my MBP, and took it home and did it my self. I backed up, then did a full reformat of the hard drive and did a fresh install of Lion. Restored my stuff from my backup. All was well for almost 2 days. Then bam, it happens again.
So I thought maybe I may have restored whatever software problem was there before I reformatted? But then I decided to test the RAM I put in it. About a week after I bought the MBP, I upgraded to 8GB. Got it from Newegg. Here is the specific RAM I got: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820233215. Did a memtest over night, passed! But was still getting the problem. So I took the RAM out and put the factory RAM back in, and the problem hasn't happened since. And it's been about 5 days. Before, it was happening everyday, sometimes up to 3 times a day.
So I guess it's safe to assume that the RAM was the issue? Even though it passed the memtest? Only thing is, how do I go about getting them to warranty it? What do I tell them? Do you guys think that was even the problem or do you think it will happen again?
I can't get the apple hardware test to work. First, my computer shipped with no DVD's, so it has to use the internet. When it tells me to select my wireless network, my network isn't even showing up on the list. I tried typing it in manually and that didn't work either. Tried rebooting my router. Didn't work. So I tried using MyWi from my iPhone and that showed up immediately. But after it connected, it did nothing. It just displayed the grey spinning globe. Then gave me an error "apple.com/support -1005D" which gives me absolutely nothing when I search it.
The weird part is that when I'm using the computer normally, it connects to my network immediately upon booting. Why is the internet retore function not able to see my network?
I remember when I was trying to do the fresh install, my network wasn't showing up immediately either. It took about a minute to show up, while all my neighbors' networks were showing immediately. It also takes a long time for my Mac to see my Windows PC's on the network after it boots or wakes from sleep.

Definitely has to be the RAM.  Reinstalled the Corsair 8GB Ram about 24 hours ago and the problem has already happened twice back to back, where as it hadn't happened for a week when I reinstalled the factory RAM.  Here are the two new errors.  The second one happened right after rebooting from the first crash.  Still can't get AHT to run.  Getting a -1006D error.
