Must use force quit to shut down iTunes, why?

I can only quit iTunes by Force Quit.  What gives?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Try to quit iTunes. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • Is it only me or do anyone's C655 force quit when shutting down?

I bought my Toshiba C655-S5049 model from best buy about two months ago and everything is great about the laptop, it's just that everytime when I shut down the laptop, it always force quit before shutting down. I want to know why it's doing that and if it's only me that's having this problem.

I've recently upgraded to FIOS, and so far it's been a bad experience on almost all fronts....kind of wishing I'd stuck with DSL...one of the main problems being the DSL support was so much more helpful...FIOS tech support can't seem to help with anything..
My main issue I'm having is connectivity on my laptop is inconsistent. Sometimes it's fast, sometimes it's about as slow as dial-up. I know the laptop's wireless connection is outside the scope of Verizon's support, but when I had DSL I had similar issues, and support was able to recommend changing some settings on my modem that resolved the issues. Now FIOS support, which seems to be US-based compared to DLS's India-based support, has no idea what to do...
Seems your main issue is resolved, glad to hear it!
As for US-based tech support... I can tell you that the turnover rate for phone positions in most US call centers is crazy. It's a stressful job, it generally doesn't pay very well, and chances for promotion are few and far between. People get burned out or find a better job, and the center has to train someone new to replace them. When I worked in a call center years ago, they had to double up and stagger the training classes for new hires to keep up with the attrition rates.
I don't know what it's like in call centers outside the US, but I would certainly hope they have more people keeping the job for longer, allowing them to gain knowledge through experience.

  • HT6114 Since installing OS X I have to force quit to shut down

I can no longer shut doen in the conventional way; i must force quit.
    Thoughts/ideas ?

Next time you are going to shutdown try first quitting each open application separately. If one of them is not quitting properly that one is the cause of the shutdown failure. If they all quit without a problem then open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Look for any entry in red or an entry using a lot of CPU time as this is a sign of a crashed process. If you find one then remember what it is. Select the process, click on the Quit icon in the toolbar's left corner, then click on the Force Quit button. See if the computer shuts down properly.

  • Can't shut down Firefox without using Force Quit

Firefox 3.6.9 on Mac OSX 10.5.8
will not close without using Force Quit
doesn't matter what website I am on or what I am doing

This problem persists with Firefox 3.6.16.
Moreover, force quit itself, via cmd-opt-esc, may fail.
As of last night, I was able to force quit via Activity Monitor.
As of today, the cmd-opt-esc force quit hangs, and Activity Monitor does not show the Firefox process.

  • Installed Itunes 8.1 and now it crashes at close and must be force quit.

I just installed Itunes 8.1 on my Mac. I did not realize any issues at first. I can still change cover art, make new playlists but when clicking on the info button (for previously purchased content and in the Itunes Store) the info page opens so big I cannot see the bottom or the top and I cannot close the info page. The only way to get rid of the info page is to close Itunes which crashes and must be force quit.
This is very disappointing. I will not use the info button until a fix is made to this release. I have already seen the posts that you cannot re-install the lower versions.. This was very badly done.

Because I really needed to view the info on new items available in the iTunes Store I experimented with my display settings.
By lowering the display settings to 1280x800
(still could not see bottom of box at that time)
and then raising it back up to 1440x900
I was finally able to see the bottom of the resized box
and now when the box is opened it maintains the new size.
Hopefully next upgrade the box will default to the lowest and not the largest box size on windows and you can resize from there..

  • My iTunes now must be Force Quit.

I have been syncing folders between my iMac and MB Air using Chronosync -- like Documents, PIctures and iTunes. It has worked OK for 6 months. The other day I made a slideshow with sound in iPhoto and saved it to iTunes. After the latest sync, the iTunes on the MB Air must be Force Quit. What should I do?

iTunes 10.2.2 appeared and I took it. After the update, iTunes Quit alright. That problem is over.

The thing is, this MUST be an Audition CC issue for two reasons. One, everything worked fine in CS6, which I was using right before I upgraded to CC. I even did a clean install of it by removing CS6 completely.
All versions of Audition can co-exist on the same machine quite happily - there is no interaction between them at all, and the system was designed to be like this. So there's nothing to stop you keeping CS5.5, CS6, CC and even Audition3 on the same machine.
The other thing I'm wondering about is Windows 8. There have been a considerable number of complaints about this doing weird things, including with Audition. I have a system that in many ways is very similar to yours, except that I don't overclock the mobo, and use a professional sound device (or two) with it (RME). The major difference though is that I use Windows 7 pro 64-bit, and I haven't had any of these problems at all. Yes I use it for a living, as well, but I don't bother with multiple DAWs - don't have time for all that these days. But I do use iZotope's RX software in its standalone mode without any difficulty.
I'm not claiming that  Audition CC is trouble-free - any number of Mac users will confirm that - but people running it on W7 certainly seem to have far fewer problems with it. It may also be worth trying an uninstall-reinstall of CC - you never know. But differences in preview quality certainly point towards audio drivers, I'm afraid...

Unfortunately this means that there is a problem in the boot sector of your hard drive. It might be indicative of a fundamental corruption in the coding that allows your computer to boot your operating system from your hard drive. I had this problem twice and it resulted in me having to get a new hard drive and restore my data.
In other words, your computer can't talk to your operating system so you can't access your data.
Here is my advice: DON'T CALL APPLE TECH SUPPORT though they are kind and usually helpful it will take you an hour just to explain the situation and they will only tell you to do what I'm gonna say here.
First: Shut down your computer completely
Two: boot up while holding down the following keys: command, option, p, and r. The computer will reboot 3 times. This solution will likely fail so if you're frustrated skip to the next step.
Three: Boot up while holding down the option key. Select recovery drive. Select your default language. Select disk utility, click on Macintosh HD, and select "verify and repair volume." Likely the verification will produce some line like "unused node not erased." Or something like that. If anything using the words "node structure" comes up, you need a new hard drive.
If after verification and repairs you still can't boot I sincerely hope you have apple care because you will need a new hard drive. Set up an appointment to come in to the apple store, they will tell you to go and get data recovery, just ask them to give you the old hard drive. Unless you have an up to date backup in which case you can just restore from that. If you're lucky the only issue is with the boot sector which means that if you ask them to give you the old hard drive, you can buy an enclosure and you have effectively been given a free external hard drive. It still works to store data just not to load an operating system.
If you have a back up drive bring it to the apple store and they'll do the whole thing right there, it should take around an hour and a half but may take longer.
Hope this helps, it's annoying but it's your safest bet.
    All the best.

  • I have Windows 7. When I try to print an album cover on a CD I burned, I get an error message that  there is a problem and it shuts down iTunes and says will notify me once the problem is fixed

I have iTunes version 11.3.1.2 and a Windows 7 Professional aith Service Pack 1.  When I try to print a CD cover from a disc I burned, I get an error message that stops the printing task and shuts down iTunes and tells me once the problem is found they will notify me.  When this happened before I got sent a message from Apple that I needed to install a new verion of iTunes.  I believe I now have the latest iTunes version.  So why can't I print?
Is this the problem below?  Does the graphics driver cause the problem?
Solve a problem with NVIDIA Graphics Driver
NVIDIA Graphics Driver has stopped working properly.
A driver update, if available, might prevent this problem from recurring.

Try a different media. I have good luck using Maxell discs.

  • Data Execution Prevention shutting down iTunes even with exception added

Well, was having this problem, it miraculously fixed itself for like a day but now it is happening again. Data Exectuion Prevention for Windows keeps shutting down iTunes. I have gone into the DEP settings and added an exception for it to not apply to iTunes but it is still happening every time I open iTunes. Today I downloaded and installed the new version of iTunes, hoping that would make a difference, but it is still happening. Also, since I installed that version about an hour ago, iTunes keeps opening itself without me telling it to--every five minutes I see it opening without me doing anything and then immediately being closed by DEP. I am getting very frustrated. Thanks in advance for any help.

I had the same issue after my recent update of iTunes.  I didn't update Quicktime 'cuz I don't use it much (or at all).  On another thread discussing the same issue, I saw that the Quicktime installation can affect iTunes.  So I downloaded the latest Quicktime, installed, redooted - issue fixed (for now).

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    If that fails:
Restore from your back up, repair the Library and try again.

  • HT201413 Why does Data Execution Protection or lack thereof keep shutting down iTunes

Why does Data Execution Protection or lack thereof keep shutting down iTunes?

Sounds like you have a battry issue but don't want to believe it.
If a car was running fine on one tank of gas, then you filled it up with another tank of gas and it began to run funny, one might suspect that tank of gas. But let's just say coincidence blew a valve-- would you think the new tank of gas was the culprit?
BUT WAIT!! It just might have been! The gas could have been of higher octane and put more more strain on the valves; you know, like going from 87 octane (OS6) to 93 octane (OS7) and showing you the engine was on the edge of compromise.
Sometimes you have to go with common sense. If everything else is ruled out, it must be the battery. And if it runs fine one moment in OS6 but immediately ***** in OS7, I'd believe my battery was suspect-- though comfy-- in OS6 but the OS7 showed its true power.
Moreover, if you had the answer-- or didn't want to believe someone's more competent advice-- why did you even call?  You've already shown that you don't know much when you asked if you could go backwards after setting up the new OS as a new phone.
Additonally, if you're such the know-it-all, but yourself the $29 battery and put it in yourself. It's a piece of cake.

  • Why must I force quit (double press home and slide off) Mail on both my iPad and iPhone in order to have Mail access on my iMac on the same wifi network. Fetch is set to manual and my ISP is Charter.

Why must I force quit (double press home and slide off) Mail on both my iPad and iPhone in order to have Mail access on my iMac on the same wifi network. Fetch is set to manual and my ISP is Charter.

I don't know about the "3" but it's a POP account. I've always suspected that Charter isn't letting go using their mobile apps for iOS. Puzzling that it doesn't block the other way. That is if Mail is open on the iMac it doesn't block access to Mail on either the iPad or iPhone. I'm guessing it's their mobile apps that are the problem but they won't admit it to me.

  • Does always using Force Quit to close programs make problems w/computer?

A friend was over and we were working on my iMac, and I used force quit to exit a couple of programs - and he gasped and said "Don't do that! It will cause problems with your machine!"
He sort of said something about directories - but ultimately I didn't understand why using force quit isn't the same as just closing, or why it would hurt my computer... Does anyone know?... My machine is running slow and has some quirks and I need to do a clean install because a system reinstall didn't help much. But I've also been downloading demos and trials right and left since I got it - which I've just found out is not a great idea and I've found out how to fix it from another forum.
So I don't know if what my friend says is true because I know I've done so many other weird things to my poor iMac out of sheer ignorance that it could be anything......
Is he right? Why wouldn't they give us that warning?
    thanks -
    maggie

The only time you should use Force Quit is when the application cannot be quit normally.
Why don't you just Quit the application?
Force Quit is not a good idea as all id does is stop the application very abruptly, it does not close down files properly or write away preference changes or any other items that should be written to the disk by the application. You stand a very high risk or corrupting the application, documents or your operating system by using Force Quit, especially when there is no need to do so.
