Must videos always be imported via Aperture 3?

I am a complete novice on iMovie so my queries will seem a bit simple.
I have a Kodak PlaySport camera, and when I plug it into my MacBook Aperture 3 loads up and the clips are imported to that application. Is this the only way I can import videos? Or is there a way I can send them straight to iMovie?
TIA
Peter

Hi -
I own the Kodak Xi8 which I believe is the non-ruggedized version of your camera. In my case, iPhoto will open when the camera is plugged in.
What I do is to quit iPhoto without importing.
Then I go to iMovie and go to the menu File > Import and select Movies.
I then navigate to the hard disk NO NAME and drill down through the folder DCIM until I see the individual movie files.
I select them all choose the drive destination and click Import.
The clips now appear in iMovie.
Hope this helps.

  • Slides via Aperture and Coolscan V ED?

    Hiya,
I'd love to digitise my film slides via my Nikon Coolscan V ED. In the past I used the software Nikon Scan for that, but I wonder if it is possible to do an import via Aperture 3, since the last software update for Nikon Scan was released in 2004.
My flatbed scanner shows up as a source, when I open the Import dialog, but the Nikon Coolscan doesn't show up. So I wonder if I have to install some additional (and up-to-date) software?
Did someone succeed in achieving scanning via Aperture in combination with a Nikon Coolscan?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    All the best,
    Stephan

I've done this exact same thing with the same scanner model. As already suggested, use the Nikon scanning software or VueScan to create TIFF files since only dedicated scanner software is +highly optimized+ for correcting scanning problems (dust, scratches, etc.).
For my project, I spent nearly a week just testing scanner setting to find the optimum settings before choosing a standard to scan the thousands of slides. Settings will vary somewhat based on the quality of the positives you might scan (i.e. Kodak Kodachrome). My scans were output as huge TIFF files, then once I was satisfied with all images, I converted the batch to high quality JPEG images only after no more adjustments were necessary.
Once done with scanning the best you can, Aperture is a great to for making final adjustments and organization. Keep and use the TIFF files if you need them, but Aperture mitigated this need for my purpose.
Be patient. To scan thousands of slides, it literally took months. So if you haven't sorted your slides into the "trash" and "scan" piles, do that first.

  • Short Slo Mo video imported to Aperture or iPhoto via cable (Air Drop not supported on my iMac): only the SloMo section imports. Not the rest. Any fixes?

Okay, as I'm working through this I see that I have to add the "Admin" account to each file with "read only" permission.  Simply changing the "everyone" account access does nothing.
So how do I change the permissions settings in iPhoto or Aperture to give each exported file the desired permissions?  I cannot locate a setting in the iPhoto or Aperture applications.
Also, I added a password to the user account.  It did not change how files are output.

Oh, baby! This bad boy flies!! Here's what to expect:
I had 40,000 images in Aperture 3 and it was dog slow at everything. I installed 3.1 update today. It took 5 minutes to update the database and then behaved marginally better than before at ASIC library navigation. I was disappointed.
Then I QUIT the app. It took a couple of hours to "update files for sharing" with a counter that went to 110,000 images. So it must have updated every thumbnail and variation of preview. Turned it back on , and BAM. Came up fully in seconds. Paused for 10 seconds ten everything was lickrty split. For the first time ever, I can use the Projects view with all 791 projects and scroll quickly. I even put it in photos modevand whipped thru all 49,000 images!
Haven't done anybprocessing yet, but i'm liking it!!

  • I imported some 24P HD videos from my DSLR to Aperture but these videos do not show up in iMovie '09 for editing purposes. Although my previous 24P HD Videos from iPhoto '09 show up. Why can't I access these videos stored in Aperture library?

I imported some 24P HD videos from my DSLR to Aperture but these videos do not show up in iMovie '09 for editing purposes. Although my previous 24P HD Videos from iPhoto '09 show up. Why can't I access these videos stored in Aperture library? I assumed that like  the videos in iPhoto, I would be able to access the videos in Aperture through iMovie. Come on Apple! I am starting to get frustrated with your products here. And this is saying a lot when I have been using and loving apple products for the last 4 years.

Hi. My camera is a Canon 600D. And yes my videos are stored in the Aperture library and they are not referenced. Even then I tried to select all the videos in Aperture and clicked 'consolidate masters' and there was a messge that said all 'none of the files are referenced',... so they didn't need consolidating.
I also tried preferences> export> external video editor > choose > iMovie. And then right click on the video to edit with imovie. Even then the video didn't show up in iMovie. It seems like the only option for me is to import the videos directly to iMovie which means there will be two versions of the same file stored in my computer eating up space.
    APPLE. What are you doing?

  • Importing Videos from iPhone 4, via itunes to iPad2 & imovie

After  discussions with Apple support today, it appears that i can not import videos i have taken on my iPhone4 to my iPad2 (via itunes) in order to be edited in iMovie.
Reason given was something to do with copyright?!
I find this quite astonishing to be fair based on the iphone 4 being the easier device to carry around and record HD videos on compared to the iPad. i would have thought the integration between the devices and swapping fiels over would have been more straight forward.
This may not be a new issue to some so i am wondering if ther eis a work around? Can i create an imovie doc on my iphone 4 with the relevant videos included and import that file instead so as to do further editing on the ipad?
is there an alternative way of getting my videos i have taken with the iphone4 onto the ipad so i can edit in imovie?
Many thanks in advance for any responses
    Cheers

  • How to get photos to iMac, when they were imported via camera connection kid

    Hi,
I have photos imported on my iPad with the camera connection kid, i.e. directly copying photos from the camera to the iPad in my vacation.
Now at home, I want to get these photos from the iPad on my desktop (iMac). I use Aperture for syncing, but also in iPhoto I did not manage. The problem is that the photos I have so imported on the iPad can be there found in the "Photo Library" album, while the "Camera roll" album includes the regular iPad Photos. The Camera Roll is visible in Aperture (and iPhoto) for importing as soon as I connect the iPad to the iMac and Aperture (iPhoto) is opened. But I cannot find the Photo Library with all the photos copied in my vacation...
    How can I import those?
    br

Photos that were imported via the camera connection kit should be treated in the same way as those taken with the iPad in terms of copying them off : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
If that doesn't work then there are third-party apps such as Simple Transfer (which has a free lite version called Simple Photo & Video Transfer) which can copy them off via your wifi network.

  • Selected videos won't sync from Aperture through iTunes to my iPhone 5s

I don't know if this is an iPhone issue, an Aperture issue, or an iTunes issue . . .
I'm using Aperture, on my iMac, and have created albums that contain videos (as well as photos). Some videos are iPhone-created that I imported from my iPhone into Aperture (since iCloud/Photostream does not automatically cloud videos); some videos were created by me in a separate program (iMovie or FCPX) and then down-mixed to put into my Aperture album. I'm trying to sync my Aperture album (not Event, but Album) to my iPhone 5s so that I have an album on my iPhone directly mimicking my Aperture album.
The pictures come over perfectly, sorted by date as they are in Aperture. However, the videos have issues. Most importantly, only the ones originally created by my iPhone come back across to my phone, and in the correct album. Anything that I've created (Final Cut Pro X or iMovie) are not coming through (down-mixed as .mov files).
I do have the "include videos" box checked in iTunes; that only serves to bring over the iPhone-created movies, some of which it dropped into the synced album, some of which it decided to put into my videos album.
Anyone out there have any ideas what I could be doing differently? I'd like all my videos in my Aperture album to come across to my iPhone in the same album.
Second smaller issue is that movies I made on my iPhone 5s in slo-mo, though they imported to Aperture in slo-mo, are syncing back to my iPhone 5s in real time, not slo-mo.
    Aperture: 3.5.1
    iPhone: 5s, 8.0.2
    iMac: 10.9.5
    iTunes:  11.4(18)

As a follow-up, I down mixed the video in FCPX using "Apple Devices" 720p. That did not help.

  • How do i see video clips already imported in to an event?

How do i see video clips already imported in to an event?
I have already created and shared one movie project from the clips and from photos but now want to make another. However, when i go to the library it only shows me the content of the first project, including the photos, not all of the video clips i originally imported. I can't believe that I need to import them all again.

It seems to me that you must have imported your clips using iMovie 9, (that's why they are all in the Events folder which belongs to iMovie 9).  Then you must have upgraded your current project to iMovie 10 which will have put the clips used in that project (but not all the others) into your iMovie 10 library.  iMovie 10 has a totally different storage arrangement for media.  You should be able to update your other iMovie 9 projects by choosing File > Update Projects  and Events in iMovie 10.  See: http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0.8/#/mov902ad0c31
This does not stop you from continuing to use the projects in iMovie 9 though any further editing you do will not be transferred to the other version of iMovie.
    Geoff.

  • Videos from iphone 4 to aperture

    Hi,
I have searched the forums, but the posts relating to this issue have all been archived "unresolved".
Aperture does not seem to be able to import videos from my iPhone 4. It simply does not see the videos present on the iphone, while iPhoto does and imports them . ( Image capture does not even see the iPhone 4). I have the most up to date iPhone software and Aperture available today.
    Help!

Actually, I have just tested some stuff and my case is in fact weirder than I thought. I in fact can only import .jpg files to aperture. I have imported the movie files from my iphone 4 with itunes and placed them on my desktop (they are mov files, obviously). And on my desktop I also have other movie files in other formats. And I also have image files in jpg format and others in tiff format and in png and other formats. Well, if I try to import from aperture, all the jpg files appear as importable from the desktop, but none of the files in other formats are visible to import. And when I said I could import video files from my iphone 3g, I realise lied, as it was in fact image files (jpg) I was importing, not video files... What weird setting could I have selected somewhere that would make aperture blind to anything that is not a jpg file????? THis was not happening a few weeks ago, so either it is due to an update of something or I have somehow clicked on something .... weird, but very problematic!!!

  • HT202441 How can I import my Aperture photo library into iMovie?

Please forgive my ignorance as I am new to the Mac world.  While attempting to create a slide show in iMovie, I click the camera icon to add a photo and only the iPhoto and photobooth libraries populate.  I can't seem to find where I can import my Aperture library. Any advice?

Your Aperture library should populate automatically. Mine always has.
However, since it is not working for you, there is a preferences file (plist) that controls all this. I would suggest that you move the com.Apple.iApps.plist preferences file to the trash according to the instructions here.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4061
There is probably no need to move the com.Apple.iMovieapp.plist file to the trash, but it coudn't hurt.

  • Importing via Firewire question

New to the video thing. Does it make a difference in quality if you import via firewire cable directly connected to the computer versus daisy chained through another firewire device?
    Thanks.

    no.
.. some devices don't 'allow' daisy chaining, we read reports, Canon has some camcorders which don't import at all when other devices are at the fw-port..
but it has no effect on quality.. digital is digital ..

  • IPhoto -- edited via aperture

    Hi,
I am working with iPhoto and aperture, and I set up iPhoto to edit a photo (from preferences)using Aperture. I open a photo that I have imported to iPhoto, select edit, Aperture opens, and a different photo that I imported to Aperture opens. So,
    1) Do I need to separately import my iPhoto pictures to Aperture prior to opening in Aperture?
    2) I thought that if I clicked edit on an imported iPhoto image, that Aperture woud open that specific photo up. Then, edits are saved in Apertures library as well (of those images that I edited and changed), so iPhoto would have the original image, and Aperture the modified one.
    3) What am I doing incorrectly?
    Thank you
    Greg

iPhoto is an excellent application, but it's a consumer level one. Comparing it and Aperture is like comparing iMovie with Final Cut. They both edit video, and that's where the similarities end. iMovie is for the home user who knows little about the professional editing environment, Final Cut requires knowledge of that environment. iPhoto and Aperture comparisons are exactly the same. You don't need to know anything about photography with iPhoto, some knowledge is required to use Aperture. I wrote on another thread a few weeks ago: If the user is confused by iPhoto's Interface, then the developers have not done their job well, if the user is confused by Aperture's, then the User is likely in the wrong place for his/her level of knowledge.
Apart from Front Row, Aperture has the same level of integration in the OS. It does all that iPhoto does and then quite a bit more. It's targeted at the Professional User not the consumer, so
Aperture is not REALLY created from the Apple Mindset of Apple elegance and simplicity
Is correct. It's "REALLY created from the Apple Mindset of Apple..." producing Pro level applications for Professional users. Professional Users generally aren't interested in Simplicity. (Just like most users of iPhoto don't think about Exif data... or "total dpi control"). So apps such Final Cut, Logic, and Aperture are not aimed at folks who want simplicity, for those folks you have iMovie, Garage Band and iPhoto.
Of course, you offer no evidence for your assertion:
it was actually brought over by recruits from iView Media Pro, along with a lot of marketing hype.
The OP is this thread is unable to use Aperture as an external editor, because, similar to iPhoto, it's not an editor. It's a post processing application and like iPhoto, is built around a database. Neither app can process the photos without importing them. The OP needs to check out an editor for the job.
    Finally, I'm curious:
I've lamented for a long time that I'd be happy to pay more for an iPhoto Pro version!
How can you lament something that you'd be happy to do?
    Regards
    TD

  • Playing videos of an ipod via xbox 360

i was just curious as to if you connect like a normal ipod video with your xbox and go to the media>video tab on the xbox dashboard, can you play videos from your ipod via the xbox 360???? that would definitely be legit cuz im always bumming movies off of my friends itunes and then i could watch them on tv via xbox 360 connection. let me know

that would definitely be legit cuz im always bumming movies off of my friends itunes
    definitely NOT legit.
As to whether an xbox can handle this depends on what acessories you have. Apple and other companies make docks with A/V cables for playing video to TVs. If xbox can take those cables as inputs then it should work.
