Mute Button not Muting

Don't know if this has already been discussed. I for one do not like where the new mute button is. Moreover, the mute feature does not mute for any type of video play. What gives?

Insulted? Very well. I'll bite, and answer the specific questions.
Maybe change it back to its original state?
The original state was a mute switch. It was modified prior to it's release to be an orientation lock. Having a hardware switch for muting notifications is actually more useful than an orientation lock.
You can now switch off notifications without having to unlock the device. The ONLY reason to lock the orientation is while the device is unlocked and in-use. Being able to shut off alerts when walking into a meeting/class/whatever makes more sense to me, and many others.
Shouldn't the iPad be a little different from the iPhone and have some originality and features that are unique?
They are already different. Why should the hardware act different across devices using the operating system? Should keys and buttons change from laptop to desktop running Mac OSX? The originality and features are in the device itself. A simple hardware switch does not eliminate that uniqueness.
From what I am seeing here on the boards, is that everyone is not too happy with the change and I agree with them.
Careful with "everyone". A handful of extremely vocal users are making a stink all over the web about this change. But a majority of the users are on the exact opposite side of the spectrum. I happen to be one of the majority who welcome it, and sent feedback to Apple requesting this feature months ago.

  • My iphone randomly mutes. Side mute button not on.  Mute not highlighted.

    Does anybody know what could be causing my iphone to randomly mute.  Side mute button not on.  Mute not highlighted.  Happens on incoming and outgoing calls.  Sometimes during an ongoing call, sometimes when call is first made or received.

    Exactly my case, too. Unfortunately no response at all - the only thing I can find on the web are discussions that your ear might touch the MUTE button - but it is definitively not the case. As Susan writes, the mute button is not highlighted, pressing it does not change anything.

  • Why does the "mute" button not "mute" the new iPad?

    Hi,
    the problem drives us crazy.
    We bought the new iPad on launch Day and every other App (like Hotel Dash) does play Sounds even though the iPad is muted. Really anoying are "between Level" Ads or "pause Ads" (like in Wedding Dash, Lost Luxuries) which started playing while my wife was in the Subway.
    The mute Button should turn the iPad to mute without exceptions. How can we fix it? Or do we have to return the new iPad?
    Regards
    Tim

    Thanks for your Reply. The Problem is, we are not listing to Music or watching an Movie - we are using an App, which plays Advertisement.
    Game Sounds do not play at all, but the Advertisement is playing at full Volume. This should not happen.
    Ok it is "not a bug it's a feature" or just abuse by App Developers, which i have no controll over? I have to use the volume rocker all the time? Why put a "mute" button on an iPad?
    As you were told, the mute button mutes system sounds.  Other sounds are muted via the rocker.  That's the way it is.

  • Volume missing in system tray, mute buttons not working

    hi, i just reformatted and installed the latest drivers for my Creative Soundblaster Digital 5. (dell) card, and at first everything was fine..
    Now they Icon for sound is missing from the system tray.. My volume dial and mute button no longer work. and yes i have gone in and selected to have it appear in the tray.. that does nothing.
    Also, all other sounds are working except for sounds from web browsers.. and I have all the necessary pluggins installed..
    thanks creative... great products...Message Edited by maluut on 0-0-2006 05:07 PM

    I have a similar problem with my elite pro card and would also like an answer.
    I installed the new drivers and now my volume knob does not work nor can I adjust volume with the remote control. The mute button does work though.
    Also why such an annoyance as to need the original disc in order to make the control panel work in the system tray? shouldn't driver updates be complete?
    Also...what's up with the max volume white noise during the driver install which made my ears ring and nearly blew out my speaker system?

  • Mute button not working on iphone 4

    My mute button on iphone 4 will not work and the sound button letting me know if it's on silent or not will not show up,
    I don't want to have to take it to apple as I won't be able to take it there for a while (+ it's not under warranty) are there any solutions to this problem?

    The HotKey Features driver is probably what you need.

  • Mute button not working

    Hi--
    This is a simple mute toggle button for an mp3 player.
    I first var sound: Sound
    Then I have the function
    //mute the current sound
    function muteSound ()
         if(this.sound.getVolume != 0) this.sound.setVolume(0);
         else this.sound.setVolume(75);
    Then I setup 4 frames in a movieClip, labelled on, onRoll, off and offRoll.
    Then this under button Actions
    // Mute Button
    buttonMute.onRollOver = function()
         if(this._currentframe == 1) this.gotoAndStop("onRoll");
         else this.gotoAndStop("offRoll");
    buttonMute.onRollOut = function()
         if(this._currentframe == 2) this.gotoAndStop("off");
         else this.gotoAndStop("on");
    buttonMute.onRelease = function()
         if(this._currentframe == 2)
              this.gotoAndStop("on");
              this._parent.muteSound();
         else if(this._currentframe == 4)
              this.gotoAndStop("on");
              this._parent.muteSound();
         else
              this.gotoAndStop("off");
              this._parent.muteSound();
    This all works graphically, the sound mutes the first time, and the graphics do change, but the sound never unmutes.
    Because I was asked before, here is a copy of the whole file:
    http://charlesnewmanpubl.com/player_fa2.zip

    I think you should call the getVolum like this
    function muteSound ()
         if(this.sound.getVolume() != 0) this.sound.setVolume(0);
         else this.sound.setVolume(75);

  • Volume and mute button not working

    The external mute and volume buttons have stoped working on my desktop touchscreen. Any ideas?

    Nevermind. Fixed it by going to System Preferences > Keyboard >  Check Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys

  • Mute button not working on brand new Thinkpad T61

        I searched a lot of websites but everyone that had this problem was running linux.
    I bought the thinkpad with Windows XP.
    I'm a little surprised at the lack of quality control at Lenovo.
    Since I specifically liked this mute feature, is the problem fixable or should I get it repaired under warranty?
    Thanks

    Very strange indeed. You seem to be experiencing exactly what the OP in this thread wanted, but he was experiencing what you want, if that makes sense
    I would suggest, as a first course of action, re-installing the HotKey drivers from c:\swtools\drivers\hotkey. It may be that the set-up requires you to uninstall them first.

  • Iphone 4 volume buttons not working

    iphone 4 volume and mute buttons not working, checked all settings they are all fine and when headphones in it works??? When I take out headphones the volum buttons do not work, when phone rings or text receives only vibrates???? HELP!!!!

    This could be due to some debris or dirt inside the  headphones jack that makes the iPhone think that the headphones are connected even when they are not.
    Try to see if you can clean the jack being very careful, with canned air as sold in electronics store.  Some people have been successful by introducing and withdrawing the headphones jack several times in a row to displace whatever is in there if it is lodged in.
    Avoid introducing anything else like a pointed object.  You could damage the jack.
    If all of this does not work, I would try first resetting the phone by holding the home button and the power button together for about 15 seconds or until the whilte apple appears, then waiting until the phone resets.  If the problem continues after this, take it to an Apple Store to see what they believe should be done.

    i had this problem but i installed a new os and installed all the updates and drivers from lenovo's system update and i worked perfectly again(old windows:windows XP     new windows:windows 7)

  • IPad 2 Mute button does not mute youTube videos or games

    I noticed iPad mute button does not mute youTube videos or games. When the button is set to mute, videos or games have their own sound so I have to adjust it manually only after I can hear the sound.
    Any suggestions on how to mute all sounds at once?

    Muting is meant to mute the system sounds like the phone ring and text message notification, it won't mute music or video or games. Use the volume control to turn the audio down.

  • Microphone stuck on "hardware" mute, not muted in alsa

    Hey everyone,
    I've installed Arch Linux on my ThinkPad t440p. I use ALSA for sound. On the computer the function keys double as various controls. Increase/decrease volume/brightness, mute/unmute microphone/speakers.
    The speaker mute button works perfectly. When toggled on the sound is muted, even if alsa is not. The microphone button however is stuck on mute. I'm almost entirely certain that the issue is related to this
    button on a "hardware" (acpi?) level, and unrelated to ALSA.
    I've tried to run the acpid service and use acpi_listen to see if it catches an event but it doesn't in the case of the microphone mute button. It does however on the speaker mute button (which works), resulting in the following output:
    button/mute MUTE 00000080 00000000 K
    As I said I'm pretty sure ALSA is not the issue because:
    - All capture devices are turned up.
    - The "Mic" control is unmuted and turned up (though I wonder if this is the control that simply plays back the microphone, as it is among the playback controls), along with the "Mic Boost" control.
    I've tried to search for help on the forum and on google to no avail, so I hope someone with more knowledge than me can help me debug this problem!

    Try: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ex … board_Keys
    You may need to remap the keycode for your WM/DE to understand, most laptops have different bindings/keycodes. Check "xev" output to make sure the keycode is right. You can then (in most WM) bind that XF86 signal to a script if you need to hack around it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Volume and mute buttons do not work. no ringtone

    Volume and Mute buttons do not work. Ringtones and alerts all silent. Sound working for music etc...

    Sounds like you have a speaker fault and the phone would normally require servicing. But seeing as you have had the screen replaced, you will not be able to do this via the Genius Bar.
    You will probably need to go back to the place where you got the screen replaced and ask them to look at the speaker for you.
