Muting Tracks in STP Audio File

I'm sort of new to STP. I should have asked this awhile ago, when I first started tinkering with it, but I made due. There is one thing I can't figure out for the life of me and that is how to apply an effect to only one track in an STP audio file from FCP. I send the original FCP file to STP as an Audio File. When it opens in STP I see the two channels. The only way I've been able to figure out how to mute one of these channels is by "disabling all" and then enabling the channel I want to hear. That works fine, however, when it comes to applying the effect to that channel, STP wants to apply it to both channels. Even when highlighting only one channel (via "apple-click & drag") I really want to normalize one channel b/c the other channel has a couple peaks from mic noise that don't allow the other channel to be properly normalized. Any suggestions specific to the points in this question.

My basic advice is to not use the Audio File editor and use the Multitrack editor instead, it's much easier to understand and use.

  • Exporting tracks as one audio file.

How do I export all the tracks as one song file instead of split audio tracks? Do I need to merge all the tracks first? I'd like to export my entire project as a .wav if possible.

But when I try to bounce a song, sometimes I get the
vocal tracks without the midi instruments and vice
    versa.
I haven't been able to bounce a "whole" song down to
a cd in order to check it out.
If your MIDI instruments are external MIDI devices, then unless they are being brought into Logic on an Input Object, they, of course, won't be included in the bounce. Their sounds aren't originating in Logic. You'll have to record them as audio files first.
However, your statement "visa-versa" kind of throws that theory out the window.
Could you explain further, exactly what's happening?

  • How do you simplfy STP audio files?

A lot of the sound effects files in Soundtrack Pro have like, 6 channels when I bring them into FCP. I don't need that for my purposes. It just gets in the way. What do I do?
    Thanks!

    Hi dm,
there are several things you can do.
-Select the audio and hit Option+C to nest the channels
-If they are .caf export the track as Aiff from STP and when you drag the audio clip onto the timeline hit Command+L and delete the 4 tracks from the third to the 6th downward.
-Select the audio track and hit Command + L and delete the unwanted channels.
-Unlink Audio Source from Destination from 3rd to 6th audio track as shown in the pic below then grab the audio and drop it on the timeline making sure the cursor hovers over the video tracks displaying an arrow pointing down.If this is done correctly only the first two audio track will be dropped.
    - you could also lock the audio tracks so that when you drop new audio the locked track remains unaltered (see lock icon on the left hand side of the timeline and in the image above).

  • How can I convert a track with multiple comps to one new complet audio file

I have one track that is great - but it is composed of different sections (NOT regions) which are different comps from punching in on different regions -- (you can see the divisions between the comps, and each different comp has its comp number (or name) - but these are NOT region divisions). I would like to make the whole track one new audio file to work with - that is, join all the comps together as one new audio file (as you would join separate regions on a track into one new audio file). All I can think of is to unpack the track (comps) onto different tracks (channel strips) which would make each comp a new region on a new track and then paste them back together and then make an audio file, but this seems fairly complicated

hey - it appears that this worked -- i exported it to another track (as an audio file -- this is done in the "file" menu) and it now is on a new track in t he same project as one audio file without an divisions between the comps -- appears to have worked -thank you so much (btw, don't forget to tell it what type of file you want it exported as, it wants to default to aif, --i record in wav files 24 bit
thanks again for everyone's responses - this forum has helped me so much

  • How to export all tracks into audio files with the same duration

    Hi everybody.
I am trying to export all the tracks into different audio files.
It's 10 soft. instruments and an audio track. I tried with "File>Export>All Tracks as Audio File but the result is 11 audio files with different lengths. As the song is 3 minutes and 20 seconds I would like every single track to be 3.22 sec long.
How do I do it? In fact, each track is composed not only by played instruments but also by moments of silence.
    Thanks!!

The files are different lengths because each instrument does not stop playing at the same moment. It would accomplish nothing other than waste disk space if Logic appended silence to the end of each file in order to make each track the same length. The different lengths you see mean nothing because the absence of appended silence means nothing.
each track is composed not only by played instruments but also by moments of silence.
Naturally. And that silence is accounted for in your exported files, when the silence appears at the beginning of the track, and when it appears during the track. It just isn't appended at the end because that would be pointless. Consider this project, consisting of four tracks:
When I use the command File > Export > All Tracks as Audio Files, Logic will produce four files that look like this:
The files are not equal in length, which is perfectly fine. What's important is that they all start at bar 1, and will align properly when imported into some other program. So all you need is the command you already used: File > Export > All Tracks as Audio Files. In one step, it will produce all the files you need, and it will produce them correctly.
By using Bounce, you would be gaining nothing except extra work, because you would have to do it separately for each file you wanted to produce. With Export > All Tracks as Audio Files, you get all your files with just one command.

exporting tracks means that any panning or automation will not be rendered. So if you want the engineer to put up all of your tracks at unity gain (all faders at zero) and have your tracks & stems reproduce the mix you're hearing at your studio, use bounce, not export.
If you want to have your tracks & stems reproduce the mix you're hearing at your studio, there's no need to go to the extra effort of using Bounce instead of Export. You only need to enable (in the Export dialog) the checkbox "Include Volume/Pan Automation." This is explained on p. 1022. When you do this, any panning or automation will indeed be rendered.

  • Glitches, clicks, and pops when exporting all tracks as audio files

It's getting to crunch time, and Logic 9 has been giving me a very hard time. It's now time to export my edited tracks as mono audio files to send to a mixing engineer. I thought mono files would be a button press away. Not so.
    *Background on Project*:
    – Started in Logic 8, and was continued in Logic 9
    – Contains only audio that was recorded using Logic
    – Has take folders with Quick Swipe Comps
    – Has flexed regions
    – Has take folders with flexed regions in them
    – Has been manually beat mapped
    Steps:
    1) Set each fader, on every track, to unity gain and centre panning.
    2) File > Export > All Tracks as Audio Files
    3) Select AIFF, 24-bit, bypass effect plug-ins, and include volume/pan automation, normalize off.
    *Expected Outcome*:
I expect mono/stereo files of all of my unprocessed tracks, bounced in place with fades, flexing, and quick swipe comps applied.
    *Actual Outcome*:
I get mono/stereo files with clicks, pops, and scrambled sections scattered throughout the files, within fades, and at quick swipe comping boundaries. Retrying the export may result in clicks, pops, and scrambled sections in different places.
    Workaround:
While the glitching in fades and at comp boundaries seems to happen in offline bounces, it rarely happens when playing the song in realtime. Unfortunately, there's no realtime option when you "export all tracks as audio files." *My workaround is to export the tracks one at a time by bouncing the project in realtime with the desired track soloed*.
This is excruciatingly slow. To speed things up, I've taken to soloing six tracks at a time, assigning all of them to the surround output, and panning each track exclusively to a different surround channel. This way, I can do a split file surround bounce and get six mono files, each with the contents of a different track. If your audio interface does not support 6 outputs, then you'll need to download SoundFlower and use their virtual 16 channel output.

In addition to the flex algorithms being disappointingly substandard in overall tc quality, flex tracks glitch constantly--especially if there are tempo changes or crossfades. You may be able to freeze them first and then export. AlternAtively, you could try tmelocking them and then using an alternate tempo map with a single tempo, then switching back after you flex tracks are bounced.

  • Adding a blank audio track to a .mov file

    Hi,
I have a .mov file that I am trying to convert to MPEG-1 for burning to a VCD. I converted two .mov's that had audio in them, but now need to convert three that do not currently have an audio track. (Converting using ffmpegX)
I've created a blank audio file in Quicktime that is longer than any of the .mov's. Is there an easy way to add the audio track from the audio file to the .mov file without one? I could probably do it in iMovie if I can't do it with Quicktime, but would rather avoid that....

Open both files in Quicktime. Select All on the blank audio file, copy, then switch over to the MPEG-1 file.
Make sure the cursor is at the beginning of the film, then select "Add to Selection & Scale" from the Edit menu.
    That should do the trick.
All of this, though, only works in QT Pro, which is very much worth it!
    Good luck

I used a gopro for an incar vid and an external "zoom H2" recorder for sound.
How do I delete the gopro sound and replace with the new audio?
I have the gopro audio muted and the new audio file in sync and behind the clip but now need to  lock it to the vision .......atatch it , make as one or what ever the term is so that I can now edit the picture and audio together.

What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
Versions of Premiere Elements later than 10 have differently named workspaces. Version 10 has Timeline workspace and Sceneline workspace.
Timeline has the numbered video and audio tracks as well as Narration track and Soundtrack, Sceneline has the Filmstrip. In versions 11, 12, and 13 the counterpart workspaces are Expert workspace and Quick workspace.
As for your video and audio sync'ing of unlinked clips....at the Timeline track level some handy maneuvers....
    a. select the clip, then hold down the Alt key and hit the left or right arrow key for a 1 frame nudge.
    b. select the clip, then hold down the Shift+Alt and hit the left or right arrow key for a 5 frames nudges.
These "nudges" should work in versions of Premiere Elements before and after 10.
If you are using a Mac computer, then we need to translate the nudges in Mac. I am strictly an Elements Windows user, so
all I can offer on that is Alt Windows typically means Option Mac.

  • From FCP timeline...send to soundtrack pro audio file project is greyed out

The send to multi track is not greyed out but that's not what I need.
The stereo audio file is 48KHz and I have 7 tracks of audio in the sequence all of which are stereo except the VO track.
If I use "open in editor" to open a stereo file from the timeline soundtrack only imports one channel.
I'm trying to run these stero audio clips through STP using the waveform editor to quickly analyze and fix the "clicks and pops" also adding a low cut off filter to some of the clips to help eliminate some wind noise.
Seems the only way I can get it to work is to export each clip as an aiff file and then import it to STP, edit non destructively, save as a .stap file and then reimport that .stap file back into FCP........
Any ideas why the "send to STP audio file project" is greyed out? perhaps I have forgotten a preference setting somewhere?
    All help appreciated.

Hey, Dave. That can happen if you captured your files with two audio tracks instead of a single stereo track. The two channels will show up on two tracks, but they're not actually stereo in the quicktime file.
When you captured, did you click the "OO" button next to the audio channels to link them to stereo? You can look at the contents of the quicktime file with Quicktime Player and see if you've got one audio track with two channels assigned to "left" and "right". If you have some other configuration in the file, check out these old threads for workarounds, or recapture if that's an option.

  • Save audio file action not working in leopard automator

Hi, I would like to convert my aif loops to caf via the following process
    -get selected items (finder)
    -open in sound track pro
    -save audio file
    -close stp
however every time I try to drag "save audio file" into the workflow I get this error message
    * -[NSNull length]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0xa002a020
I'm using STP as part of logic studio.
Any help would be appreciated. thanks

The real problem here is, why does the Finder have to be so ********! Why all this trouble just to change filenames?!?! Why use automator to do something so simple?!?! I have to use but I hate it!
Please, despite all the Windows problems and faults (and I hate Windows and love Mac), they have a better file manager then we do, because the explorer is a good tool unlike the finder! Why can't we just choose the items and do some "rename" option, or just select all, press "enter" and write what we want (doing a sequential rename by default).
Come on, if windows explorer can do this, why can't we?!?!?
The automator should be used to more advanced stuff, not to just simply rename items...

  • Sending Audio Files back to Final Cut pro, nothing.

    Simple issue:
I send from Final Cut Pro To Sound track pro some audio files along with the clip.
I edit it in Sound track Pro, and save (just like in the tutorial) then I quit.
I go back to Final Cut Pro and what do you know, the file that I sent HAS NOT BEEN EDITED!
    Some one help.

I tried the same thing earlier in the year, and when the sound came back into FCP, it was corrupted!
Since then, I don't know if this is a good option, but it seems to work fine:
Once I have finished my editing in FCP, I export the soundtrack into an AIFF. I edit the AIFF via STP, and when finished, import it back into FCP.
I'm not experienced enough to know if this method is bad, but it has worked well for me!

  • Export selection as audio file

    Hey,
I can export a selection to a MIDI file, I can export a region to an audio file, and I can export a track to audio file. But I can't export a selection of audio regions to a new audio file. Anyone know why this is, and if there's a work-around? I tried setting locators to the selection and exporting the track to new audio file, hoping that with the locators active, it would only export the section of the track I had within the locators, but no such luck, it still exported the entire track into the new audio file.
If this is something simple, sorry for wasting your time. But it would save me a lot of time if I can export my selected audio regions as a new audio file instead of the entire track.
Thanks very much in advance for your help.

Well, you learn something new every day.
Indeed. A bad day is when I haven't. To find out about the mono bounce was new to me too, as I only use stereo files - even for mono sources.
Never occurred to me that I could change the OUTPUT from stereo to mono, though I'm aware of that control for individual tracks.
And I say to that, "Duh." seems pretty straight forward. And less steps than using the glue tool.
    Thanks very much.

  • Going from "Audio File" to "Multi-track" Editing in Soundtrack

    Howdy!
In Final Cut I've exported multiple clips via right click and "Send to STP as Audio File Project."
Now, I've realized I am doing it all horribly wrong, and I would like to export my entire sequence again as a multi-track project!
Great, but now I have to ask myself, "What about the clips I've already EQed and used the noise cancellation tool on? Do I leave them as they are and just expect for them to go back to their original state? Or should I delete the files that STP made?" When I right click a clip this is the file type that STP made, that FCP links to, "292_1336_03.MOV (sent).stap"
Can I delete that file and about 7 others to make my audio return to it's normal state? Or is there a couple other steps I should do before ruining my life?
    Thanks a bunch,
    JS

I'd start with a Send to STP Multiclip project. You'll probably have to isolate the clips you already modified individually, only so you don't lay another track-based effect on top of an existing clip-based effect. Then just listen and see what you've got. If it's not going to work for you, well, chalk that up to a "learning moment," or "experiment." I have plenty of those sitting around here. Once you get a handle on the STP workflow it's much faster overall for dealing with an entire project (not so good for single clips).

  • How would you do this?  CD tracks from one large audio file

I just recorded in a live concert into Soundtrack Pro. The file was recorded at 16bit & 44.1KHz. I want to make a CD of this without any gaps. I am curious how to put in markers/CD tracks so that I can jump to each song.
Anyone know of a way to do this without breaking all the audio up into individual files?
    Thanks!
    Gary

Afaik, there's no way to do it in STP without doing independent audio files for each track. In theory, you could create an audio file for each track, don't have any space between each track and burn your CD DAO (Disk-At-Once) and everything should be fine. However, I'd rather have one long file and just put markers where you want the track indexes. If you have Waveburner, you can do this with it. If you don't, Peak can do this as well but my new favorite software for that job is Wave Editor:

    At 79$, it's a no-brainer deal!
