MX200 won't boot 2008 Aluminum Macbook, except after PRAM reset.

Hello all, Can anyone confirm if the MX200 SSD works in a late 2008 Aluminum Macbook?  I formatted and installed Yosemite 10.10.4 onto an MX200 and put it into the Macbook.  I can boot the Macbook from the disk only when I zap the PRAM.  Once the Macbook is running OS X, I can "Restart..." the Macbook with no problem.  But if I "Shut Down..." the Macbook, I can't boot past the grey screen with the Apple logo and an empty progress bar below it.  It just sits there, for hours, with no progress.  Then, if I kill the Macbook and zap the PRAM, the Macbook will boot up quickly without any problems. Anyone else experiencing this?  I would like to be able to shut the computer down and start it again when I please, without having to reset the PRAM everytime.  Are the MX200 and the 2008 Aluminum Macbook simply not compatible in this regard?

  • 2008 Aluminum MacBook 2.4 Recv Errors Cisco Switch

Something odd I recently encountered with my wife's 2008 Aluminum MacBook.  Since it was purchased several years ago, it has almost exclusively been used on wireless.  This model uses the NVIDIA MCP79-1 chipset with 9400m graphics.
While waiting for some large files to transfer, I opened up Network Utility and noticed that it is showing Recv Errors between 5% and 10%.  There was no issue transferring multi-GB files and there was no packet loss when an IP address on my internal LAN was ping'ed for several hours.  It is almost as if Network Utility sees something bad with the packet, but the packet doesn't drop.
The MacBook is running 10.8.2 and is plugged in to a Cisco Small Business SG200-26 managed switch at Gig speed.
    Things I have tried:
    • New cables, shorter and longer cables.  Cat5e/Cat6
    • Multiple ports on the switch
    • Hard coded both the switch and the Mac to 100Mbps Full Duplex
    • Disabled all QoS and special routing (basically everything can talk to everything all on one VLAN now)
    • Stole cable from my iMac and plugged in the MacBook...still has receive errors.  iMac had 1.5 million packets transferred with none lost.
    • Safe Boot
    • Zapped PRAM and reset SMC
    • Enabled firewall with only key ports open (DHCP, DNS, ICMP, etc)
    • Tried both enabling and disabling flow control on the switch
One thing worked, but doesn't make sense.
    • Daisy chained an old Fore Systems ES2810 10/100 managed switch to the Cisco Small Business SG200-26 and plugged the MacBook into the Fore switch.  The MacBook no longer shows receive errors.
None of my other Macs experience this issue (Mid 2007 iMac, 2009 Mac mini, PowerBook G3/500)
iMac is on 10.8.2, Mac mini on 10.6.8 (Rosetta support) and PowerBook G3 on 10.4.11.
I guess I'm beginning to wonder if there is some kind of broadcast traffic that the other NICs in the Macs are able to properly process.  Anyone else have a strange issue with this model and certain switches?

Same thing just happened to me again. My aluminum Macbook was hibernated all morning. I took it to Starbucks for lunch, and when it came out of hibernation, the trackpad was working just fine. However, about 20-25 minutes later, while typing in a online form textbox (in Firefox), the trackpad's tap-to-click stopped working and I could not move the mouse pointer for a few seconds. I even tried to physically click on the trackpad, but that didn't work either. A few seconds later, everything started working again. It seems as though there's some kind of process running that interferes with the trackpad's operation. Or, perhaps, this has something to do with the heat factor - the trackpad stops operating when it reaches a certain temperature, and as the temperature passes that mark, it starts working again.
Please post to this thread if you have similar problems. There are reports about the same issue on Macrumors.com. At this point, Apple needs to know about this problem and should start working on addressing it. Hopefully, this is a software problem and can be corrected with a software update.
    Thanks!

  • Late 2008 aluminum Macbook Pro (15in 2.4GHz) using 8GB of RAM

    Hi everyone,
I have a quick question to ask, What I'd like to know is why the Late 2008 aluminum Macbook Pro motherboard has a chipset (Nvidia) that can support up to 8GB of RAM but Apple are stating that the system can do only 4GB?
According to NVidia, The motherboard is fully capable of using 8GB of RAM but has been limited to 4GB by Apple and that this can be resolved by a simple EFI update.
The links below show a well known Apple parts dealer running tests on the system using 8GB RAM and claims that the OS X can read it perfectly but the programs will not use more then 4GB of the RAM.
I really don't understand why Apple would limit the system to use only 4GB of RAM and if Apple have any plans on releasing an EFI update.
    Thanks for reading guys

  • Cover/Case for 13" Late 2008 Aluminum MacBook?

I have a 13" late 2008 aluminum MacBook and am trying to find a cover/case (preferably the hard shell) that will fit it. I read that they are no longer made for this model so it will be hard to find. The websites I found that offer cases for this model were not able to say that it would be a guaranteed fit. After seeing so many reviews about how they don't fit this model, I am hoping that someone on here could direct me to a website that sells ones that will for sure fit.

    Go to OWC's site,
You'll see the selections on that page. Great company. No hassle returns and great support.

  • Can I replace my 250Gb SATA HD in my 2008 aluminum MacBook with a new SATA3 Solid State Drive?

I would like to replace my 250Gb SATA HD in my 2008 aluminum MacBook with a 500Gb SATA3 SSD. I want to do it because of the age and to increase capacity, access speed and reliability. Is SATA3 backwards compatible to SATA? Should I save some money and just stick to a regular SATA higher capacity HD and forget about a SSD?

I replaced the hard drive in my early 2009 model with a Samsung 840 ssd. My book has the same sata interface as yours and accepted the newer drive without a hitch. It's the best $160 I've ever spent on a computer upgrade. My macbook feels like a new machine. I would highly recommend it.

  • 2008 aluminum macbook keys stopped working

my late 2008 aluminum macbook keys suddenly stopped working, it is keys 1qaz backspace and two volume buttons. i neved spilled water on it, has this ever happen to somebody else and if so what was the problem.

This sounds like a hardware fault. Contact Apple using www.apple.com/support/contact if you are in a country that supports it or call the appropriate phone number on this page. Alternatively carry the MacBook in to an Apple retail store or service provider to ask for an estimate.
    Best of luck.

  • Bootpicker Won't Boot Windows on MacBook Pro

+We use bootpicker on iMacs, MacBooks, Minis and haven't had any problems until now. Suddenly the late 2008 MacBook Pro won't boot into Windows from bootpicker.+
+It's exactly the same problem described in this archived post that I've quoted below. Same log message as well.+
    +Anyone found a solution for this?+
*Bootpicker doesn't reboot automatically on Windows selection*
    Posted: Oct 17, 2008 3:00 PM
Hi all! Yesterday I installed Bootpicker (2.1.2) which now is provided by Apple (http://www.apple.com/education/it/bootpicker/) to select between Mac OS X 10.5 and Windows (Boot Camp).
It works fine except following: The Bootpicker menu is displayed after loading Mac OS X directly before Mac OS's login dialog. When I pick Mac OS the Mac OS login dialog is displayed - fine. When I select Windows, also the Mac OS login dialog is displayed. I had expected that in this case Bootpicker will automatically reboot the machine to start up from the Windows partition. Instead I have to manually select the reboot button in the login dialog.
I think there is something wrong. The /Library/Logs/bp.log says following:
    17:55:43 BootPicker: Initiating.
17:55:44 BootPicker: Configuring interface for Windows volume/device: /dev/disk0s3
    17:55:46 BootPicker: User chose Windows.
    17:55:46 BootPicker: Bless args: (
    "--device",
    "/dev/disk0s3",
    "--setBoot",
    "--legacy",
    "--nextonly"
    17:55:47 BootPicker: Flagging slice 3
fdisk: could not open MBR file /usr/standalone/i386/boot0: No such file or directory
    Enter 'help' for information
fdisk: 1> Partition 3 marked active.
fdisk:*1> Device could not be accessed exclusively.
A reboot will be needed for changes to take effect. OK? [n] Writing MBR at offset 0.
    fdisk: 1> 17:55:47 BootPicker: Terminating.
May be the unsuccessful configuration of the MBR causes the failure? Any other experiences or suggestions?

I think that the issue might be that there is no boot0 in /usr/standalone/i386. I have had similar issues lately when trying to make a bootable usb memory. I think this is necessary for the legacy option in the bless utility. If some one have a solution for this I would like to know as well.

  • Which imacs and apple displays connect to late 2008 aluminum macbook 13 inch for use as external display?

I have a late 2008 13 inch aluminum macbook and want to purchase an iMac computer or apple display to use as an external display for it while I'm at my desk.
I can afford up to $700 for sure, maybe up to $1000 and would like one that has built in camera and audio if possible.
I'd like to know what my options are as it seems not all are compatible.
I'll mostly be doing web browsing and photo editing in Aperture.
Also wondering if it's possible to sync 2 computers so that when you make changes on one it reflects the changes in the other. Like you can with certain apps like Evernote.
    Thank you for your help!

Yes he is right, Snow Leopard is your first step.  Once you have that you can upgrade directly to Mountain Lion if memory serves me correct.  Some people were saying that Lion was a little sluggish with the aluminum MacBook but that Mountain Lion was great.  Personally I had Lion on it also and didn't think it ran badly.  10.6 was still with Rosetta (the program that ran power pc apps) but this is dropped on 10.7 and up.  Up until just the other day I still had the stock 2 gb of ram.  The firmware update happens with Snow Leopard and up so it should come up as a software update.  If not, it can be done manually as well.  The ram I purchased was 60 bucks for the 8 gb.  For Lion and Mountain Lion I have to agree with the above reply, that it would run alot better with at least 4 gb.  If you run that many apps at once then you are going to want as much ram as you can get.  If you add a solid state drive you will be amazed at the difference it will make too.

  • 2008 Aluminum Macbook OSX Upgrade

    Hi,
I have the first aluminum macbook that was released around December 2008 (2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3). I'm running 10.5.8 and I wanted to upgrade my osx but I wasn't sure if I should do Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion. I'm mainly doing it because I find that I can't download and run a lot of programs (my osx is too old). However, I'm afraid that if I upgraded, it wouldn't run as smoothly because I don't have a lot of RAM. I was just wondering which osx you reccommend, if I can leave my RAM alone, and if not, how much more I would need to install. Thanks!

You're welcome. I would recommend snow leopard and upgrading your RAM to 4 GB for comfortable use. If you are a student, you are probably using MS Office, or atleast word, as well (just an assumption). I would not go beyond snow leopard. Snow leopard was a major leap forward (introduction of the App store, for example) for OSX, and your machine will have no problem running it. Lion is currently 30$ and unavailable through the App store, and Mountain Lion would slow down your machine's performance. I would see no benefit in upgrading beyond SL for your purposes. If you decide to increase your RAM as well, I recommend using OWC. They provide 1 year warranty on all modules:

  • 7 u j m keys not working after 10.8.1 upgrade, late 2008 aluminum Macbook

That's all, these keys do not work after update/upgrade today. They were working fine right before i did the update and are not working now. If I hit the M ket a few times i do get some garbage. Help?

Thanks, but still the same. It boot normally only if there isn't any usb device attach to the computer. I'm using usb mouse instead of bluetooth mouse and it happens not to boot normally like usual.
The technician said it would be okay if any usb devices attach to the computer during the boot apparently it won't boot normally.
    Any alternative sir?

  • Won't boot from Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive

I am told to run DISK UTILITY as I get the "No Mountable File System" error for EVERY DMG I try to install. (Install works fine on my 2nd MacAir so the DMG is not damaged.) However DISK UTILITY does not fix this issue.
I am trying to boot to Disk Warrior 4.2 on my Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive. Holding C down for 10 minutes on reboot does not work. Selecting DVD SuperDrive using the REBOOT | OPTION KEY option does not work.
    Any ideas?
    My thanks!

Sorry, but the current Disk Warrior CD will not boot the recent MacBook Air models. See:

The only way to run DW on your system would be to boot the MBA from an external hard drive with your MBA's version of Mac OS X and DW installed on the drive. IF you don't have one available you can use, if there's an Apple Store in your area they may be able to help. Otherwise, you may have to reformat your MBA's hard drive.

  • Mac Mini won't boot after PRAM reset

My mac mini has been running very slow, VERY VERY SLOW, then it would seem it would catch up with itself and run fine for a few minutes, then slow down again. It got to the point where I would have to do hard resets, but it still wouldn't work all that great. So I read on here to do a PRAM reset, which I did by holding down controloption+PR, and i got a gray screen with a status bar. But now the mac won't even boot up, even when I try safe mode. I turn it on, and i hear the start up tone, and get to the gray screen with status bar, but then it just shuts off. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    From your user guide:
1 Disconnect all external devices from your Mac mini, except the keyboard and mouse.
If you have an Ethernet cable connected, disconnect it.
2 Restart your Mac mini while holding down the D key.
3 When the Apple Hardware Test chooser screen appears, select the language you want
    to use.
4 Press the Return key or click the right arrow button.
5 When the Apple Hardware Test main screen appears (after about 45 seconds), follow
    the onscreen instructions.
6 If Apple Hardware Test detects a problem, it displays an error code. Make a note of the
error code before pursuing support options. If Apple Hardware Test doesn’t detect a
hardware failure, the problem may be software-related.
If this procedure doesn’t work, you can insert the Applications Install DVD that came
with your Mac mini to use Apple Hardware Test. For more information, see the Apple
Hardware Test Read Me file on the Applications Install DVD.
When prompted, choose the extended test.

  • HELP, K8N won't boot into bios or anything. need to reset board to default

I got playing with the MB and tried HT 5x, it immediately shutoff and now won't let me into bios to reset it, so i'm waiting to hear from MSI. I tried clearing CMOS and everything, the damn thing boots on for 5 seconds and goes off. Screen stays black. Has to be turned on from PSU as power button at front won't do it.
    CPU: AMD64 3200+ (230FSBx11 = 2.5Ghz)
    MB: MSI K8N NEO
    MEM: OCZ 3700 Gold Dual Channel (2x256 in slots 1 & 2)
    VC: ATI 9800 Pro 450/380
    PSU: ANTEC True 550w
Its not heat related as I've been able to run lots of tests and my case is open right now.  It just won't boot at all, black screen and shuts itself off.  All I need to do is get into bios to change HT back to 4x, but I can't.  Any ideas to reset to default?

I tried having it unplugged for over 8hours while i was at work, tried taking the battery out, tried taking both memory out.  It starts up (screen stays off) and then shuts itself off after 5 seconds still.  I turn the power off, then back on at the PSU (the power button at the front won't turn it on or off) then it starts all over again.
My ABIT IC7 would reset to default it turned off and on 3 times in a row...why dosen't this board have something like that.  arg.  So anyone know how I can get this damn board to allow me into bios?

  • Won't boot from battery or AC after left unplugged for a month

I left my PowerBook 17" 1.5GHz unplugged for a few weeks, and now it won't boot, whether it's plugged in or not, battery in or out. The band around the AC plug glows orange.
I've tried resetting the Power Manager by holding down shift, control, option, and hitting power to no avail.
I've tried holding down the power button for 10 seconds.
No sound, no screen, nothing. Just seems dead. Any ideas?
Is there a hardware reset button?
Could the internal battery be dead?
    What else can I try?
    Amit

One thing to try, and hopefully it is this simple, would be to remove the battery and plug it in over night and give the internal battery a night of charging. Then, try to start it up in the morning.
I don't know exactly what the Apple Store told you, but maybe the easiest fix is the answer.
I don't have a 17" G4, but I've had other laptops that would not start when both the external and internal batteries are dead.
