.mxf and .scc files

So here's my stats.  Using FCP 7 and Compressor 3.5 (heard about the nightmares of X and never wanted to touch it).
I've been outputting to mpeg files and transcoding with an .scc file hasn't been an issue.  Now the station is asking for IMX/MXF files.  I've tried every trick I can think of.  Tried "New Job with Target Output", and still the .scc gets stripped away.  So my question is, will FCP X/Compressor 4 work with IMX/MXF files AND .scc files or am I relegated to taking this "out of house"?

Canon's web site says...
The XF100 utilizes Canon's XF Codec – a file-based MPEG-2 compression with an MXF File Wrapper that ensures the widest compatibility with existing industry infrastructure, metadata and non-linear editing (NLE) systems. The codec's 4:2:2 color sampling provides ultra-fine transitions in tone and color for maintaining the highest image quality needed for advanced post production processing.
Since it is not out I guess no one can say how well it will work with FCP although apparently it will ship with something to enable FCP compatibility.

  • How do I successfully merge MXF and DV files in a sequence?

I have a Panasonic with a P2 card (and DV film).  I have a reader.  I have successfully transferred all the files to my computer, and imported them into PP6, no problem.  My only issue is this: if I want to consolidate the MXF files with the camera's film (DV) files in the same sequence, I have issues.
If I make the sequence compatible for the MXF, the DV files are small-in-a-box size.  If I make the sequence NTSC DV, the DV's are great, but the MXF frames are over the top huge (we're talking nose hairs and cropped head tops)  I've played around a bit with some formats, but I keep getting the same problem.
I'm betting there's one in here that somebody already figured out that works for both file types in a sequence.  Or...is it during export that the change might happen?  Really would like to be able to use both media types in one sequence if possible.  Is it?  If I'm going to need to convert the files to say, .mov, am I going to lose enough quality to care about, or is that totally counter-productive.  I downloaded a trial version of "Wondershare"  as advertised on the internet as an MXF converter, but I tried it and it didn't seem to be able to work with the audio files (as they are separated in the MXF content folder)
Any input, much loved.  (I tried exporting the MXF separately to an .mov and re-importing, but it didn't seem to help).

No idea if this will help with your problem, but there is a CS6 Issue/Bug MXF http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1074489
Also, mixing SD and HD means that something has to give... and if you want everything at SD resolution, you may want to look up "interpret footage" in the help file, to "force" the HD video into the SD screen size (note that I do not mix video types, so I really can't give detailed instructions)
Also, if you export the MXF it would need to be into an SD file, not just another HD file of a different type

  • MXF and AVCHD files with Final Cut

I am looking into buying a new camera and there are 2 file formats that I have never used. MXF and AVCHD. AVCHD I know is not native to final cut. So this would need transcoded to Apple Pro Res. All fine and dandy there. But where I am unsure, is MXF. Can I just import them directly into final cut as if it were a .mov file? Do they need transcoded? Any special plug ins needed?

  • What codec to convert .MXF and MP4 files into to use with alpha channels in Ae and Pr CS6?

When I import .mxf File, shot on a Canon C300, into after effects, the alpha channel options are greyed out, when I look in, interpret footage, main. This also is the case importing .MP4 files, shot on a Gopro hero 3. I used to use final cut and using compressor convert the files to pro res 4444 or 422. What's my new workflow for preparing files with alpha channels to use in After Effect and Premiere and do I use Media Encoder to do it?

Better question: Where do you expect that Alpha channel to come from and contain any useful info for transparency? You're making a fuss over a non-issue. Unless you apply keying or other methods of creating transparency, even if there were an Alpha channel it would be fully opaque and then what's the point?

  • Closed Caption .SCC file

I've seen a few topics similar to this but nothing current. Is there a way to get .SCC files to work in Encore 2.0. I spoke with tech support on the phone earlier and they basically brushed me off. I wasn't impressed.
Regardless, I still find myself in the same situation. I've got and .SCC file containing my closed captions and it doesn't work. I don't get an error message. It just plain doesn't show up.
Does anyone have a current resolution. According to the service that created my .SCC file, the timecode on my .SCC file already starts with 00 instead of 01 like some have said it should so there's nothing for me to go change.
If there is anyone out there that has used .SCC files to for captioning, please tell me how you did it and explain it like you would to your 6 year old nephew. Also, if someone has captioned some other way, I'd love to know about it. My deadline is Tuesday and this thing is complete except for this lousy bug!

    Red,
You are exposing yourself as someone a lot younger than me... ;) The command prompt is a relic from the olden MS-DOS days, way before Windows. :p
There are two ways to access the
    command prompt
    : One is via
Start > Run and then type
cmd.exe in the box and click on OK. The other is via
    Start >All Programs >Accessories.
Before you go there, do some preparations to make the next steps easier:
Create a new folder directly at the root of the C: drive and call it "caption". ("at the root" meaning that it shouldn't be inside any other folder)
Make a copy of the ccadj.exe utility and put it in the "caption" folder.
Make a copy of mycaptions.scc (I don't know the name of your actual scc file, but I mean your actual file) and also put it in the "caption" folder.
Now start up the command prompt. An old-fashioned DOS window will appear.
    First type
C: and hit the enter key to make sure that you are working on the C: drive.
    Then type
cd \caption and hit the enter key to go to the "caption" folder. The text in front of the blinking prompt/cursor should now read: C:\CAPTION
    Type the ccadj instructions:
    ccadj -o-00:58:36:00 mycaptions.scc newcaptions.scc
(The filename and the amount of offset are of course only examples)
When the CCADJ utility is finished you can close the command prompt window and you should find a "newcaptions.scc" file in the "caption" folder.
[EDIT: Joe's instructions seem to be for a route much simpler than mine. :)]

  • Encore and .SCC caption files

I 'm having an issue importing an .scc file into field one of an Encore project.
My .scc is a non drop frame timecode and would like to know if there are any converter's to convert either an .smi or .scc non drop frame to .scc drop frame timecode.
    Thanks!

I did a hex dump of the working and non-working files. The only difference appears to be where in the working file every time there is a 0a-30, there is 0d-30 in the non-working file. Could this be some line ending or beginning that is invisible otherwise? Both files are saved as Unicode (UTF-8, no BOM). Here is a screen capture: http://www.personal.psu.edu/pzb4/hexdump.png

  • Attaching .scc files in PP -- not working

Okay... I'm almost at my wits end.
I've been doing closed captioning and subtitling for 10 years, I use the industry-standard software, I follow the workflows... and yet I cannot get any captions to display in PP CS 5.5
I've looked through the forums, watched the VideoBrain help videos and it all seems so simple.
Has anybody actually been able to get the "attach closed captions (.SCC format) to sequence" to work and display?
Yes, the output is enabled on the program monitor. The timecode is correct in the timeline, the sequence and the .SCC file.
The .SCC files work in all other software including Adobe Encore.
There are no error messages displayed.
Tech support has been unable to help at all nor can they escalate anything to a senior technician in anything under three days. I've had each tech (three) who calls me back ask me the same sets of questions but unfortunately all they are able to do is browse their own forums and online manuals which we all have access to already.
It can't be this hard and money is flowing out my window as I see contracts collapsing...
    Has anybody had any success?
OR does anybody know of a workaround? I'm trying to embed closed captions in an .mxf container and was trying to use PP to create the sequence then use Media Encoder to output it.
    Sorry for the frustrated rant
    Dave

No no. What I'm attempting to do is use Media Encoder to encode a PP sequence that has CC data attached. All I want is the CC data to be accessible when broadcasting the MXF file. I understand that I shouldn't be able to see them (other than in the PP program window). However, I should be able to see them in an MXF viewer which I checking with the folks at VLC and AmberFin right now.
You can use the TC00.scc file located in the FTP below. It's a test file with captions every 30 seconds (for 10 second duration) starting at 00:00:00:00. I just created a six minute "bars and tone" video with PP and used that for video.
    The FTP information is:
    HOST: intercaption.com
    USER: captioner
    PASS: access
If you get it to work let me know and I'll send you the real data but it's a HUGE file.

  • How to tell if video is drop frame or non-drop frame in Encore?  Need info to use correct SCC file.

    Hi,
Thanks in advance. I am using Encore DVD 2.0 to add closed captions to video. I have both a drop frame SCC file and a non-drop frame SCC file. How can I tell which one to use? Can I tell from the way the timecode looks on the timeline? Do I look at the timeline timecode or the source timecode? For example, in a random area of video the timeline says 00;02;50;24 while the source says 00:02:50:20.
    Thanks.

Thanks jbowden and Jim for your help. Although I'm still not real clear how Encore notes DF vs NDF (more on that below), I got my problem solved.
Regarding DF vs NDF in Encore DVD...There doesn't seem to be a real consistent method of identifying which is which. For example, Jim suggested that I look in the Project panel for the colons vs semicolons. There, the video file timecode was shown as xx;xx;xx;xx with semicolons, apparently suggesting that it is DF. However, the timeline and audio file listed in the project panel also showed semicolons in the timecode. Then, down on the timeline, the timeline was shown as xx;xx;xx;xx while right next to that it said "Source xx:xx:xx:xx" with colons! So, if I go by the project panel, the video is DF. If I go by what it says down in the timeline, the video is NDF. As it turns out, subtitles and CC only match up if I use the NDF versions of them, not with the DF versions, which indicates that my file was NDF. So, in the end, I'd say that the way the timecode is represented in the project panel didn't mean anything, at least not in this case.

  • SCC file quirks when viewed in Apple DVD Player

    Greetings all,
I have a bunch of DVDs with closed captioning that I am implementing by importing scc files. Everything works fine and looks gereat on set top players and even most software players running Windows. However, on the Mac running Apple DVD Player 4.0 or higher (OS X), there are a bunch of quirks during CC playback. Among them are:
    1. First and second lines of CC swap places (second line appears above first line)
    2. First line doesn't appear at all, but second line does.
    3. First line appear at top of screen while second line appears at the bottom.
These issues are showing up on multiple projects using burnt discs (not builds or in simulator). Again, the CC look fine on set top machines and on PCs running Windows.
Is this an issue with DVDSP? With Apple DVD Player? Or with the SCC files I'm working with? The files were delivered from the caption house and I have no way of opening them to look at the formatting.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Best,
    Todd Nocera
    G5 Dual 2.0 GHz, 3 GB RAM, DVDSP3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Todd,
I haven't seen this abberation but I am in PAL land. It doesn't surprise me though. DVD Player has numerous issues with adhering to the spec. If you are happy with the playback on all but a Mac I would proceed. If you are really worried when you go to replication you can have this looked at by the engineers ie through MEI or their in house testing systems.
Your caption supplier will also be able to examine the integrity of your VIDEO_TS build.
For future reference most captioning houses can supply you with the encoded mpeg rather than relying on DVDSP.
    Good Luck

  • MXF OP1a Master file converted to Blu Ray in AME to .m4v showa up in Encore as Untranscoded

Just started creating Blu Ray DVDs from MXF OP1a AVC-I 100 Master files.
I use AME to convert to BR matching the settings of the master. It converts successfully creating  video .m4v and PCM files.
When I import them into Encore 6.02, the Project window info displays the video file as  " Remix. m4v    Video file      Untranscoded".  And     " Remix.wav   WAV audio   "Untranscoded"
Whats up with that? If they have been trancoded by AME why does Encore say they are Untranscoded?

The project panel shows both the DVD and the Bluray transcode status/settings. Make sure you are looking at the Bluray column.
What is the audio format for your disk settings? If set to dolby, Encore will show your pcm as untranscoded. Also, try changing the setting for the pcm asset to "do not transcode."
    Are you using 5.1?
I use AME to convert to BR matching the settings of the master.
Are the settings of the master BD compliant?

  • Line 21 scc file Out Of Sync by 1 hour

I have a project for which I have added a CC .scc file to the main track. However, when I test the DVD Build, the captions are displayed EXACTLY one hour off. The original video, exported from FCP, has a start time code of 1:00:00;00, as does the .scc file. However, DVDSP's track time code starts at 00.00.00;00. I have checked in the preferences for DVDSP and I can not seem to find a setting to change the track's timecode base.
The DVD was created using an mov reference file exported from FCP. I am currently encoding m2v and ac3 streams with compressor to see if I get better result.
So, while I am waiting, I thought I would ask:
    1. could the DVDSP time code base be the problem?
    2. Will using m2v/ac3 files resolve the cc timing issue.
    3. If 1 and 2 are not the reason for the timing issue, what would cause the cc to offset by exactly 1 hour?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    TIA.

Well, I finally figured out the solution:
In the track's Other tab, there is a track offset. I set that to 1:00:00;00, and the captions all lined up.

  • SCC files not working in Encore 2.0

I've tried a few SCC files in Encore 2.0 that I've used successfully in Sonic Creator. I've inserted them in both Field 1 (typical) and Field 2, with no success on playback. I've tried multiple monitors and DVD players that are capable of displaying the CC data.
I converted a sample SCC file to a CCD file to confirm that the data was there, and it's all readable. Any idea why these SCC files are not working with Encore? If anyone has a SCC file that they've been able to use with Encore and are willing to share it for testing, please email it to [email protected] Thanks!

Does your SCC timecode begin at 1 hr or 0 hr? If the former, try the latter.

  • Can't Import .scc file

I am running DVDSP 1 on a os 9.2 box, and DVDSP 2 on a OS 10.3 laptop, and neither one of them seems to be recognizing a .scc file that I have tried to import into the assets. DVDSP1 says it's an unknown format, and DVDSP2 says it's an unsupported format.
Any help? According to the manual DVDSP2 supports it, unsure about DVDSP1
Could it be that the file is corrupt? I got it from a service that creates closed captions.
    Thanks!

    Hey Mark, londonboy,
I recently ran into this problem too and figured out a solution. I replied to a similar topic (http://forums.adobe.com/message/5839277#5839277) with the solution.
Basically, I was able to import it once I changed the .scc encoding from UTF-8 to 1252: Western European.
If you don't know how to do this, or it still doesn't work, check the link above.

  • Premiere Pro CC crashes when importing .scc file

Hi all! Trying to use closed captioning features in Premiere Pro CC, and every time I try to import a .scc file (Created with Movie Captioner), Premiere crashes with a general error.
I've tried creating captions with Unix line breaks, and Windows line breaks, and I get the same result.
I'm on Mac OS10.7, if that has any bearing, and running on an 8 core Mac Pro with 24GB ram.

There's an illegal character ('-') where you see "-207".  So all of the data is offset by one spot.
So change that line to the following and it should work:

  • Why can't I import .scc files into CS6?

The manual clearly states: "Premiere Pro supports importing Closed Captioning files in .mcc, .scc, .xml, or .stl filename formats."
I've got .scc files, but the File > Import does not see them.  When I import the folder containing them, the error says they are not supported.
    Very frustrating!

The Closed Caption workflow is a bit different in CS6 then in CC. In Premiere Pro CS6 you actually attached the CC file rather then imporitng it. Here's how:
Select the sequence, and then select Sequence > Closed Captioning > Attach File. To display attached closed captions, go to the Program Monitor's wing menu and select "Enable" under the "Closed Captioning Display" option.
