MXF files show up as Red on timeline and in export

Like many others on here, I've become the latest victim of the "red screen of unending frustration." I've been working freelance for a company for a few months on this project, and just this week when I was set to submit the final versions, the red frames reared their ugly a** heads.
They didn't show up until I exported through AME (yes, all my products are up to date - that was the first thing I checked) and some of them had issues, some didn't. I've noticed some things about the files that are giving me trouble. The files are all:
- MXF files from the same camera - I didn't shoot the footage so I don't know what exact camera was used (the files are named AA016401.mxf -  a naming convention similar to that of the Canon XF 305 that I use at my full-time job)
- Spanned to at least three mxf files
- Blue screen footage (doubt that has anything to do with it)
Every instance of the problem file has this issue - it's not just frames, it's the entire clip on the timeline that shows up as red.
I've tried clearing caches in both AE and PP. I've tried moving the files to my local drive, renaming, refreshing, etc...nothing helps. I've tried using Prelude to convert them to .mp4s or .movs...that just froze my computer multiple times. I've tried restarting programs, the computer, ejecting and reconnecting the thunderbolt drive. I can't get anything to even make me feel like it's helping.
Since I know someone will ask - I'm using a Mid-2011 iMac (I don't do lots of editing at home for obvious reasons!), running OSX 10.8.5 with 12 GB RAM. All footage, stills, project files, etc. are connected with a Thunderbolt external with plenty of space on it. I'm sure there is some vital piece of info I'm forgetting to include.
PS - I usually hate it when people point out that this is their livelihood and they get pissed that their problem isn't fixed ASAP...well, now I hate myself, cause that's how I feel. C'mon Adobe. Fix this.

Yeah - they froze my computer, which made me originally think that Adobe/Premiere/AE had done something to change the original file - crazy, I know.
I took the drive with me to work and transcoded the problem files into MP4s and had no problem - which now makes me think that my computer at home needs an upgrade (*spoiler alert* it does). I don't have CC on my computer at work so I couldn't check to see if I was having the problems on a different computer or not. But I did notice that in the original MXFs in Prelude there were no red frames, unlike on my home computer where Prelude was showing me lots of them, presumably the parts that are on my PP and AE timelines.
I'm going to hopefully be replacing the problem clips from the MXF files with encoded MP4s tonight, so I'll report back with anything that goes well or not.
Fingers crossed.

I opened my iPhoto library today which was stored on an external hard drive and several of my videos now will not play at all. The weird thing is that each file shows a duration of 1 second and when I open them it just shows one frame. What the !&%$#@ Where did my original video files go?

Sounds like a good plan, you can never be to safe and having a second External HD is safer than one.
The only thing that I would do different, is setup the 3T as my TimeMachine Backup and then erase and move my Photos, Videos and perhaps even iTunes Media to the 1T. That way you will have room to backup both the Internal Hard Drive and the 1T External Hard Drive to the 3T using TimeMachine.
Take your time, study and use the > Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions if you get stuck or aren't sure how to make the move.

  • Premiere Pro CS6 Crashes on Render Timeline and also Export

Hi, The Last few days Premiere Pro has been crashing during either export of a sequence or during render of timeline.
This also happens if I import the timeline into AME and try to render from there.
The Files on the timeline are 720x576 progessive @25fps Avi Type 2's
I've tried outputting to a number of file types with the same crash. Also I have Premiere Elements on the same machine and this does the same!
This had been working fine the past few weeks, can't understand why its stopped now.
I've also tried uninstalling CS6 and reinstalling it. and also keep all updated..
Also reading some other posts, i also uninstalled Itunes in case the latest update has caused problems. Unfortunately i don't have  restore point from before the problem started happening
although i do have a backup on another drive.
I should also mention that i've done a number of virus scans as well with a couple of products just in case of that.
Machine is Win 7 64 bit.  I7 Quad 2600 (3.4gig), 10gb Ram, Blackmagic extreme input card, and Duo input card. The Video Card is internal to the board (Intel HD Graphics...which performs ok for what i need it for )
any help would be appreciated to get up and running again.
    cheers
    john

Well, I think i finally have got to the root of it...These files were recorded using Blackmagics Mjpeg Compressor, and that seems to be the problem.
Rather than recoding the files (difficult as AME would fall over as well!) I ran them through my digital desk again (Vmix) playing them back and re recording them using AVi and the normal dv option...this time the files produced would render and output...hoorah  now see if i can finish it..will report back, but this seems to have sorted me out.

  • Imported XDCAM footage "blacks out" on timeline and when exported, which will not do.

We're having a "horrendous problem" importing XDCAM. About half the clips "black out" while playing on the sequence timeline, although the associated sound files play fine. BTW the clips that black out always do so in the same place in the clip.
A first I thought the camera operator might have been covering the lens, but we can convert the MXF video to mp4 using Pavtube and video plays the entire length of the clip.
This problem happens in CS5, CS5.5, and CS6. It happens when we Import through using the Media Tool or the other way (whatever that's called).
When we EXPORT from the sequence the blackout occurs most of the time, although every once in a while the exported clip wll play in its entirety.
We have several hundred clips we need to use and the workaround is very cumbersome and time consuming, so we'd really like to solve the import problem so imported XDCAM clips work properly on the timeline.
To view the problem click below.
This encode plays the entire clip.
    http://youtu.be/5ylb3ak1W5I
This encode made immediately after the one above blacks out
    http://youtu.be/nlr7sV6kyQs
Does anyone have any idea what is going on and how to fix it?

    Well...
The problem has been solved in a way that indicates that the problem should never have occurred.
We finally were able to borrow a XDCAM disc reader and the people we borrowed it from also incidentally provided a bit of software called "XDCAM Transfer". THAT software solved the problem.
I have spent many many hours reading on the Sony website, the Adobe website, and any other website I could find (next to my desk I have a 6" stack of printouts that I've read) and nowhere did I see this piece of software mentioned.
Once that software was installed it imported everything, even the files we already had on the local HDD.
Thanks everyone for all the attempts.

  • SD footage looks Bad in timeline and on Export

    Hi there
Let me start by saying that this Forum is amazing, I read through pages of stuff looking for something kind of similar to my question but come accross tons of really useful stuff that I just can't help myself from reading. You guys truly are a mind of knowledge, some of which I haven't a clue about to start with, but I am learning...
    Anyway, on to my query.
I work in Prem Pro CS4 and also use Encore and AME.
All my updates are up to date and I work on a struggling system (dual core. P4. 32 bit Vista Home, 4GB mem, ATI video card (512mb) Its a couple of years old, but handle SD footage ok.
I often get asked to shoot Weddings, Bands & Events (I'm no professional, just a keen ameteur). I shoot this footage mainly in SD (PAL) using a Sony HDRFX1 & and HDR-SR12e.
Okay, so i know there is a difference in Picture clarity at source. the FX1 out performs the SR12 easily, and so this is used for the odd cut away and not the main event.
When I import my footage into PP, all looks OK with the FX1 footage, but the SDR footage is really blurred (out of focus) and washed out. Though playing it back through the Camera or hooked up to a TV, it doesn't look half bad.
So, what am I doing wrong? Why is PP making this footage look horrible and even making the FX1 footage look rather un loveable.
This is the case in Both the Preview window (Highest Quality) and when I export to file or DVD.
I have exported to Verbatim discs (This has made a slight difference) using Encore (using both Dynamic link and exporting as an AVI).
I don't touch transcoding setting, I let Encore sort that out.
I see talk of Codecs - I use mostly the Mpg2 DVD "Main Concept Codec" as my stuff ultimatley ends up on a disc (no other codecs are available to me) - Should i be looking for a better one? - But surely this won't make the footage any clearer in the Preview window in anycase.
Maybe I am Importing it wrongly, as the SDR is a HDD, I just import the usual way... So I can't see i am doing anything wrong there.
I understand that this is a large post and I have so many questions about getting it right. But my main problem is the end product just doesn't quite live up to my expectations, or as it looks on the Camera (or playing from the camera on a 40inch Bravia) before importing in to PP.
I have tried playing the DVDs back through several DVD players and Monitors, it looks virtually the same.
Any suggestions as to improving this would be greatly appreciated.

    No problems Harm
I appreciate you taking the time to help me out with this issue.
Let me go through what I do, hopefully you can pick any holes.
I import from FX1 via capture in PP - usuing the DV preset (No option to change except for HDV) - you referred to "capture in MS DV AVI type2" but I have no option to chage any setting. It's either DV or HDV.
I import the Footage from the SDR via Sony PMB (Picture Motion Bridge) and then import into PP using the double click on project panel method, then set up a series of BINS to make it all very tidy.
I then use 1 sequence and sync up the footage, then just use keyframes to mix in and out where required.
This is all in 720x576 PAL
The quality problems are noticable in the preview window (Set to highest quality)
To test if this is really what I am going to end up with at the end of my project I have exported as an AVI file and played it on my PS3. The footage still looks washed out, Blurry etc.
I have also expoted to a DVD via Encore using Dynamic Link and importing a renederd file and palyed this back on both a Toshiba DVD (upscaler) and PS3. I have also tested it on A Sony Plasma (Though this actually makes it more washed out but a smoother feel) also through a Bravia 30" LCD (this looks the same).
Also played back on PC using VLC, WMP, Nero & Media Player Classic - all give very similar results.
However, playing the files direct from the Camcorder give a different impression. The footage, whilst not as pretty as High Def, is what you expect from a Single Chip handy Cam.
I will say one thing, the footage is clearer when viewed in PMB (Sonys Picture Motion Bridge)

  • CC 2014 is running into issues with some clips on my timeline and the export gives an unexpected error.

What gets me is that the clips I narrowed the issues down to are from the same camera and same settings from the rest. It gives the error in h.264(any preset even match source), Quicktime, and even match sequence and match I can however get it to export with AVI- DV widescreen 24p but thats only SD. This is 1080 footage. Ive also cleaned my cache and tried exporting with max bit depth and mrq off/on.

Gspot gives limited info and does not analyse mts, I find media info much better.
    MediaInfo Windows
I am not getting this very clear. What error message are you getting exactly and when.

  • Canon MXF Files On Timeline Have Changed, Updated This Morning...

I went to bed last night feeling good that I was going to deliver a solid project for my client this afternoon. Woke up this morning, updated to the latest Premiere Pro CC and now in my project all of the Canon MXF clips on every timeline are completely different than what I edited together. They are the same camera angles, just that the edited clips have been replaced by footage from earlier or later in the MXF file. I tried deleting all preview and media cache files and nothing has fixed it so far. Project is due in 4 hours and there is no way I can start all over. Any suggestions?
Running the latest Premiere Pro CC, Mac running Mountain Lion.
I'm going to keep plugging away here and hopefully I can figure something out.

  • FCP 7 crashes when Log & Transfer MXF files

I just got a new MacBook Pro and Final Cut Studio that includes FCP 7.
I just received footage from my DP shot on a Panasonic HVX200 on P2 Cards and saved as MXF files. I saved all files onto my MacBook with a backup on an external USB drive (another set was saved on a Firewire 800 drive).
    All footage was shot 720p/24fps.
I can view the files on the Log & Transfer preview window - but when I attempt to ingest via Log & Transfer, the transfer begins but suddenly stops (status is idle) and the red ! stop sign appears - obviously the file was not ingested. When I attempt to re-start the transfer or try with another file, FCP crashes.
My understanding is FCP 7 is able to accept native P2 format files (MXF) without transcoding - so it is very disappointing this is not working.
    Easy Setup settings are:
    Format: Panasonic DVCPRO HD
    Use: DVCPRO HD 720p/24
    Portion of error log:
    Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: KERNINVALIDADDRESS at 0x00000000ffffffff
    Crashed Thread: 0
I would greatly appreciate any insight!

It doesn't transcode...it wraps the MXF files into a QT wrapper, joining audio and video. DVCPRO HD P2 mainly. AVCintra native support is here too, but you need to render to ProRes.
    BUT...that isn't the case here...try this:
in the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.

  • CS6 has problems with Cannon .mxf files that CS5 plays fine

On CS6 there are occational visual glitches that resembles DV drop out. A 1 hr spanned clip has audio going out of synch, audio length not matching video lenth.
    Camera: Cannon XF100
    Footage : 720p 60fps 35mbs
    system Windows 7 Pro
    premiere CS6.01
    Core I7 930
    16 GB ram
    sysem drive: 128GB SSD
    2 X 1TB media drives
    GTX560
The same clips copied from the same flash card to a CS5 system plays without visual or audio glitches.
    Core I7960
    CS5.03
    12GB ram
    1tb media drive
    gtx480
Any clue to why CS6 is having issues with the same footage CS5 is working beautifully with?

I also use the XF100 and have just about the same system setup as you (24GB RAM, Core i7 2600).  I have not observed any video glitches, but it doesn't mean I don't have them.  I just finished my first big shoot using two XF100's and I'm going to edit in CS6, so you have me a little concerned.
Could you describe the issue more?  Does it happen at the clip breaks?  How can you tell the audio doesn't match video length?  Are they different lengths on the timeline?  It could be that it's the conformed audio file.
How are you pulling in the video?  I've found that if I allow CS6 to interpet the spanned video as a single clip, it will conform the audio and it takes forever.  I have found it much more productive to just copy the individual MXF files to my system, and only the MXF files.  Then import them as assets and PPr will not conform the audio, it will just create PEK files for the audio waveforms.  I then select all the separate ~2GB clips and drag them to the timeline and they play fine.  For the multicam, I'll just bring in the first MXF file from each camera, sync them by timecode, then bring in the rest of camera "A" and the rest of camera "B".  Again, I haven't observed any issues, but it doesn't mean there aren't any.

  • Why is Premiere getting an error when trying to export .MXF files?

    Hello!
I have a video that I need to submit to DMDS and it must be a .mxf file. This is the first time I've ever had to export a .mxf so I am not too familiar with the type. I have been exporting every other type of file for years and never had an issue (H.264, quicktime, etc.). However, when I try exporting .mxf I get the generic rendering error which then stops the export.
The first time I tried, the video was down to 12 minutes left (after about 2 and a half hours) when I got the error.
The next time, it crashed right away with over 2 hours still remaining.
So it does not seem to be a corrupt clip because: A) I've been rendering this video out as other file types for rough previews, drafts, etc and it's worked fine and B) The 2 crash times were on opposite ends of the spectrum.
I am running an iMac with OSX 10.7.5, 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 8GB ram...I am using Premiere Pro Version 6.0.0
I do have Third Party plug ins installed but have never had an issue exporting in the past, only with this .mxf file.
Thanks in advance for any and all help!

If you have GPU accelertation enabled in Premiere Pro, try switching to Software Only.
Are you queuing the job to AME or clicking "Export" in the Export Settings dialog (which encodes directly through Premiere)? Whichever path you're going down, try the other one.
I'd also keep an eye on your resource usage, especially RAM, while encoding in progress. With 8GB of RAM, I'd be surprised if that were the problem.
Lastly, if you're encoding through AME, then you might want to post on that product's forum: http://forums.adobe.com/community/ame

  • How to import .MXF files in to FCP?

    Greetings
I got me some .mxf files on an external drive given to me by someone. They should contain 720p and 1080 video files but instead I was given .mxf files
What the heck are these things, and how do I get them in FCP? I can't import them as FCP doesn't know what they are... preliminary research indicates that .mxf files have something to do with Panasonic P2 cards (!?)
    Please help

Here we go again...someone didn't follow the proper procedures and now you are stuck. MXF files are most likely P2, but you really should ask. Because Avid captures as MXF files. Is there a CONTENTS folder, and inside 6 folders, then the MXF files? or just looks files? What are they named? If they have the CONTENTS folder and the entire structure in intact, you need to import them with LOG AND TRANSFER, in the FILE menu. Here's the workflow: P2 Workflow with FCP 6
If there is no structure like that, then you need to either get RAYLIGHT or MXF4QT or Calibrated software to work with these files in FCP. And that would be the ONLY way. See what happens when people don't do things right?

  • 10.0.6 now can import MXF files.  But how??

We have a Canon XF300 which shoots MXF files.  Up until now, we "Log and Transfer" and FCP rewraps the .mxf to be .mov files.
    Everything works perfectly!
But I see now that 10.0.6 can work directly with these MXF files with no need to rewrap, allowing us to NOT have to rewrap to .mov  (with a 3rd party plugin?)
BUt how do I do it?  I put the original (from the camera) CONTENTS folder (the camera's original media) on the desktop - but when I Log & Transfer, or import the media - it's still converting to .MOV!
What am I missing here - I feel like I ought to know this!
    Thanks,
    Larry

    Hi Tom,
Nice hearing from you.  Are you saying we would need to get 1 of the above 2 software programs?  Spending $250 to allow us to do what 10.0.6 says we can do?
Well what did Apple do??  Sounds like the 2 software companies above are "doing" it? I thought (obviously I'm WRONG!  . . . that 10.0.6 allows direct mxf import without rewrapping.
So in order to take advantage of the direct MXF import (that 10.0.6 allows), we need to buy software for $250 and up??  I just want to make sure I'm understanding this?  Thanks very much for your input.
    Larry
    Thanks very much.

  • Strange duplicate files showing up

I primarily develop in PHP running MAMP on my Mac for the testing server. For a few months now I'm getting all kinds of duplicate files showing up as I'm editing and testing on my local server. This never happened before.
Here's my usual workflow. The testing server folder is set to the same folder that I use for my site folder. I have two reasons for this. When the testing server folder and the site folder are the same I can just go to localhost/mySite and see everything working without loading up files to a different testing server. It's much easier and uses less disk space than having duplicate files.
Second reason, when I'm working on debugging pages a simple save / option tab / and refresh gets me to the page much faster than when I have a separate testing server folder setup and have to use Option+F12 to upload the file and render it.
The bug that's popped up is the generation of duplicate files. For example, while working on main.php, when I look at or edit a record set I often end up with a file called main_QFK9H5ZWYH.php or something similar in the folder. This file is not used for an f12 preview, never shows up in any localhost previews, and, as far as I can tell is never used by Dreamweaver for anything. The only thing that happens is my site folder fills up with a bunch of files that do not need to be used for anything, clutter up the directory, and unless I'm very careful, end up getting uploaded to the server as just a bunch of junk.
Anyone else seeing this? I thought for a while that it was a preferences setting that I fouled up. Deleting the preferences file and starting over didn't solve the problem.
This was especially problematic today as I was going through the entire site prior to publishing and I ended up with more than 40 duplicate files. For the main.php file I ended up with 6 versions in less than 5 minutes of testing. I'd love to shut off whatever is causing this.
One last thing. It makes no difference whether I'm editing on my laptop or on the desktop at home, or on a Windows machine at the clients office.
    Thanks for any ideas.

Yup, preview in secondary browser is turned off. Further testing reveals that if I have a scripting error or I use shortcuts CMND/Option to bring up a direct link to CSS, or if I try and edit an existing recordset from the bindings panel I'm very likely to get a new temp file. It's never opened in an edit window and the temp file never shows up in the site preview unless I browse directly to it.
Weird and annoying for sure. When I get this intranet site completed I'll try and diagnose the problem. No time in the day to do that right now. Deadlines and family commitments don't leave me with the spare hour or so I'll need to figure out what's going on.
    OSX 10.7.4   Dreamweaver CS6 Version 12.0 Build 5808
No errors in premissions. Ran a repair anyway. No change.
Also, as per my other post, Dreamweaver is doing this on 3 different systems. A Dell laptop running Windows Ultimate, my iMac and my MacBook Pro.

  • Random files in timeline suddenly showing up as red "placeholder" graphic

Everything was fine in the timeline until one time I reopened a project I had been working on and random
files are seen as that red placeholder graphic. If I right click on those files in the timeline I can "reveal in project" but
"link media" is greyed out when I try to reassociate those files.
All the files on in the same project folder on the same drive.  I'm using CS3 with the latest patch.
Is this some kind of bug in Premiere?

I haven't had any Windows' Delayed Write errors or any error messages. In the Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Manager>System I checked for warnings related to the F:\ drive but only saw the occasional C:\ hard drive warning.
I never installed any drivers for the drives.
The bizarre thing is that I can move the "placeholder" files to a higher or lower track and it will show right up but after I save the project and reopen it the problem is back. Same thing with unabling then enabling "placeholder" files...the files immediately show back up but saving doesn't make the project open back up without the placeholders. All other changes can be saved, however.
Since this project file is a 2 minute portion of an 18 minute movie I'm working on(post-production effects) I'll work on another
project file containing other aspects of the movie for the time being(as long as that project file doesn't end up having this same problem).
Ultimately, I have to believe that transfering the entire 500GB worth of project files, etc... to the C:\ Drive of a new workstation(in a couple months)
    will solve everything.
