My 12" PB G4 has the Vertical Line Problem too!

Hi. Sorry to post 'out of my league' but this problem only seems to be discussed on this forum.
I will go and post on the 12" Display forum as well, but I was wondering if anyone has heard of any other 12"s with the problem?
I'm calling Apple tomorrow to register this issue.
Thanks!
Susan
Powerbooks G4 12" and G3 Pizmo   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I just got off the phone with Apple Technical Support (aka Apple Care) and was told that since there were not many reports of this problem with the 12", that all he could do was give me a case number, and should Apple decide to do a recall, I will have been documented as having reported this problem.
So I said - 'oh, if I DID have the 17" then Apple would repair the display?' And he said 'no'. I said 'but there are hundreds of people out there with the 17" who have this same exact problem; it cannot be a coincidence' and HE said "there are only a few people with the 17" who have this problem.
I referred him to the 17" Display Discussion thread and to the Bridgit Riley site, but I'm sure he's going to blow it off.

  • Psychedelic Rainbow like swirls (NOT the Vertical Line problem)

Hello, after a nasty fall, I had to replace my LCD in my PowerBook G4 1.5 MHz. It work just fine for about 1 month.
Then it started.... for no known reason, the screen went psychedelic rainbow swirl. It went away but only to return more and more frequently until finally, the only mode the screen displays is this psychedelic pattern. It does not move, but is the same static image reboot after reboot.
    I can still see my desktop below and can do emergency type functions, but it is really unuseable. Check out a picture of my problem here;
    http://www.yogaelements.com/html/pb_lcd.html
I have tried zapping the PRAM.
    Any suggestions? Thanks

Hey Michael, thanks for the info about one graphic card (or should we say chip?) is soldered to the mother board.
sorry, i should have been more clear about the "target mode" diagnostic. When starting up in target mode, the screen is not psychedelic but obviously not displaying correctly. The problem must be related to the psychedelic display screen and i don't think it is related to any screen saver. Never installed 3rd party screen saver stuff. the image is static.
The swirl is the light blue swirl or wave background that you see on most macs. My desktop is using the same background which causes the swirl/wave but because something is not working correctly the image looks like it is lower res, missing colors and thus the psychedelic effect.
    I showed a logic board repair shop the image and he states;
"- it's a known issue. Looks like video chip lost contact
with motherboard. We can soldered it back and this should fix the
problem. Price for this is $299. Chance for successful repair is about
60%. If we fail you will be charged $49 for the diagnostics + $19 for
shipping back (around US). Sound problem much more easy to fix, and it
might be form $29 up to $49 extra depending on damage."
So.... the above repair shop is saying its a known issue and is the logic board and you are saying it probably is not the logic board if an external monitor is working.
More more I dig the more confusing it gets! Thanks for your ideas, info and help. We can figure this out!

  • HT201406 i have a frozen ipod touch the screen has multicolored vertical lines and is non responsive any ideas?

i have an i pod touch which appears to be frozen it has multicoloured vertical lines on the screen and is non responsive has anyone had the same probs

    If that does not work:
    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • The screen on my G4 has a vertical line that doesn't go away

My G4 Macbook has a Vertical Line on the lower screen that is about 3 inches high.  It doesn't go away.  What to do??

There is no such thing as a G4 Macbook. Macbooks have only had Intel processors.
However, wether you have a G4 notebook or an Intel notebook, I would want to run the Apple hardware test to check the video circuitry.  Find the original OS X disks that shipped with the system, and find the one that, in small print, says 'AHT Version x.x' on the label. Insert and reboot holding the alt/option key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. If you have either of the TechTool programs they can do similar testing. Does that point out any video issues?

  • My cursor has long vertical line at times

My cursor has long vertical lines at times. When I hover over a link, the cursor doesnt' change to a hand

I don't know if this applies to LCDs, but the iMac G3 and eMac had "geometry settings" in the display preferences. If you messed up the settings, things like lines on the bottom and skewed images could happen.
I wonder if the factory geometry settings are off on your iMac? There is no way to set these with System Prefs.
I found someone asking about it here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3019584?start=0&tstart=0

  • I have version 10.0 and this week the vertical lines in tables stopped showing up, they appear and then disappear, does not happen in any other browser.

When I have a table with columns, the vertical lines show up and then disappear. The right side and bottom lines show up and the top and left side lines are very light with no vertical lines showing to separate the columns.
This just happened this week. It does not matter what size I make the screen, once they disappear, they do not show back up. IE and Google Chrome have no problem with the lines showing up.

Does it help if you resize that window one or more pixels?

  • Reason behind the Vertical lines while iphone asleep

Whenever my iphone was asleep for more than 10 or 15 min, some vertical lines appeared on the screen to last only a few seconds and then dissapear. I had no idea why this happened until a couple of minutes ago.
I noticed that although they only lasted a few seconds, it was definitely a pattern.
I now know what is the source of the problem.
*I had configured my iphone to fetch data every 15 min (since my gmail account is not push). As soon as the phone was asleep, whenever it was time for the iphone to fetch data (while asleep), the vertical lines appeared. Now I know that it happens only when I have that option ON, since when I changed it to fetch manually, the lines did not show.*
Any ideas why this happens? Is this a software or hardware issue?

Hi. I recently updated to software vesion 2.0.2 and started to notice the vertical lines you describe. I had never noticed them before. I have spoken to Apple iPhone tech support and they say they have never heard of this issue. They have asked me to do a restore on the phone via iTunes to see if it is a software or hardware issue. If it still happens after restore they told me to go to Apple store to see about a possible replacement. I have tried the resore and so far I haven't noticed the lines but it is early days.
By the way I have noticed the lines appear randomly and sometimes when I receive an email and get the audible signal I can see them.
Let me know how you get on if you try to restore iPhone

  • Matrix report vertical line problem

    Development tool:
    Report Builder 11.1.2.2.0 (64-bit) on Windows 7
Solaris app server with the following software versions:
Oracle Forms and Reports 11g 11.1.2.2.0
    FMW is 11.1.1.7
    WLS is 10.3.6.0.8
This is a report with a matrix.  The rows across have multiple fields and some of those fields may wrap depending on the amount of data in an individual field.  The matrix portion contains a single data item that does not wrap (basically just a single word status with some conditionally color formatting).  I have added a vertical line to the matrix item so there will be grid lines between each column.  All the frames are set to vertical-expand and horizontal-fixed.  I have also tried setting all the frames to vertical-variable and horizontal-fixed.  The problem is the vertical line does not expand when the data items in the across row cause a wrap and expand the height of the row vertically.  I've tried setting the vertical line to stretch with the same frame that encloses the across rows.  When I do this the vertical line disappears.  As soon as I set any value in stretch with frame the line stops showing.  I've tried all the combinations I can think of for printing on first, last, all and base printing on anchoring or enclosing and nothing works.  The line will only show if I leave the stretch with frame as null but it looks terrible when it is the height of one row but the actually row of data across may be a larger size due to field wrapping.
    Any suggestions?

You will need to include an additional column of your date column to your SQL statement.
e.g Your original column - to_char(your_date_column,'Month') "Months Name".
Add a new column - to_char(your_date_column,'MM') "Sort Column".
In the Matrix Row, include this new column field also. In the Data Model, move this new column field to the top. Remove the Break Order property to NONE for your original date field (Months Name).

  • Satellite 3000 screen vertical line problem

my laptop is Satellite 3000 , it got vertical line problem now, i wanna use a outside CRT screen to replace the current damaged LED screen.
I have tried to use FN-F5 swap key, but it is still doesn't work, i tried to log in the system to check it, (the system (windows xp) is normal), but i can't see anything because the screen is black, it won't get in the system even if i connected it in to the LAN, because the laptop network function configuration is not allow connect with internet,( i did ghost before it completely damaged), the question is :
1, do i need to configure something so as to it can use outside screen in windows XP system? or just use FN-F5 swap key?
2, how will i do next step if i wanna use the outside screen ?
    thx a lot

    Hello
If the notebook is preinstalled with all Toshiba designed tools and utilities FN+F5 key combination should work. Of course the external monitor should be connected properly.
If you are missing some tools FN+F5 key combination will not work.
What I want to know is what happens exactly when you use FN+F5 key combination? Stays the LCD screen black or switch to the right picture again? As far as I know if you use FN+F5 key combination and LCD on the notebook stays black that means the signal is send to external device but if the monitor is not connected properly or there is some contact problem you will not see the content on external monitor.
Believe me it is not easy to say what is wrong there but if possible try to test it with different monitors. Satellite 3000 is pretty old notebook model and maybe is RGB port defective.

  • Too many jars cause the error "the input line is too ling"

    Hi, Friends,
For some good reasons, I received a lot of jar files (25) and I have to include them in my classpath.
Now I have a problem. When I use javac or ant, I got
The input line is too long.
The syntax of the command is incorrect.
I don't know if the only solution is to extract classes from those jars and put the class root location in the classpath. I don't like this solution.
    Thank you for your help?
    Youbin

I did try using jre/lib/ext but it looked like I'd
have to put all the jars there -- i.e. even ones that
were in the classpath did not seem to be found unless
they were in the ext dirsctory. This may be a windows
quirk, but again, it is what I am stuck with for right
now.You mean that if you put one jar in lib/ext, then no jars outside of it are recognised? I've never heard of that before - it doesn't happen on any Windiws platform I've ever used.
I should warn you that I had a problem last week that seemed to come down to having unnecessary jar files in lib/ext - If you have an application that uses its own version of a particular jar, but there is a different version of the jar in lib/ext, the one in lib/ext is the one that gets used (I think its to do with class loaders deferring to parent class loaders) - not sure how often the problem occurs (I've never seen it before), but keep it in mind if you get any new problems coming up.
I don't know exactly what you're supposed to use lib/ext for, but I assume its intended as a place to put extensions to the core API and nothing else.

  • The input line is too long.

I am a prentice on J2EE by using the Tutorial 1.4.
    - Problem:
I keep getting this error message: "The input line is too long. The syntax of the command is incorrect." from the windows's terminal no matter what arguments I issued for the command asant right after I successfully executed command "asant build" under the directory of both <Install>/examples/web/bookstore and bookstore1 when I practice the topic of The Example Servlets on Chapter 11: Java Servlet Technology.
The command and the arguments are:
    asant create-db_common
    asant create-bookstore-war
    asant package-bookstore
    asant deploy-war
All of them have the same outcome:
"The input line is too long.
The syntax of the command is incorrect."
I have tried to do the research on the google and ased some Java developer friends and school teachers; unfortunately, none of them can solve this problem.
    - Environment:
The OS I am using is win2k professional. The commands were issued on DOS terminal. I have successfully built application server, and pointbase, deploy tool. I have utilize this tools and environment to run all the examples very well on Chapter 8: Building Web Services with JAX-RPC.
The Server and PointBase were activated when I issued those commands.
    -New Problem:
Even worse, after failing on running the Servlets Examples, I got the same error message when I go back to the Chapter 8's Examples and run the command "asant build" on the directory <install>\j2eetutorial14\examples\jaxrpc\staticstub.
    - tried solutions:
    (A) I checked the log from admin console and found this error message that was Severe:
A "com.sun.enterprise.tools.guiframework.exception.FrameworkError" was caught. The message from the exception: "Unable to get View for viewDescriptor 'webApplications'"
The root cause is "com.sun.enterprise.admin.common.exception.MBeanConfigException: Component not registered"
See the HTML source for more detailed (stack trace) information.
    (B) I also after unistalling the Application Server from the directory of C:\Sun\AppServer, and reinstall the Server onto C:\AppServer; in addition endited the build.properties file under the directory of <install>\j2eetutorial4\examples\common on the line of j2ee.home=C:\Sun\AppServer to j2ee.home=C:\AppServer, I got the error msg as following:
    D:\Java\Tutorial\J2EE\j2eetutorial14\examples\jaxrpc\staticstub>asant build
The system cannot find the path specified.
The input line is too long.
The syntax of the command is incorrect.
where D:\Java\Tutorial\J2EE\j2eetutorial14\examples\jaxrpc\staticstub is the project I had successfully built before I tried to build on Servlet project.
Can anyone or the tutorail's authors give me some helps? Thanks!

This is a known problem of win2k...
one of the solution is to shorten your J2EE path... e.g shorten c:\program files\sun\app_server to c:\app_server. i haven't tried this method personally though.
the other solution is to use winXP. i have tried it n its working.
