My 120 GB hard drive says I have used 17.85 GB and its one day old.

Is this normal? I've downloaded about 6 programs but thats it when they were all downloading they said I needed to have MB free, not GB, that is why I am wondering. I also have iWork preinstalled.

Yes that is normal unless you do a custom install and get rid of files you don't want. The OS and ancillary programs take up at least 15 to 20 gig of space.
If you really want to see what is there try whatsize.

It would be much better if you had separate drives for the pictures and Time Machine backups.....but, if you want to use the same drive for both purposes, temporarily move the folder with the pictures to another location for safe storage.
Run the Time Machine backup on the hard drive and verify that everything is working correctly. Time Machine will format the disk for you in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as part of the backup process.
Then move the folder with the pictures back to the hard drive with the Time Machine backups.
When you have tested to make sure that everything is working again, then and only then should you delete the folder with pictures from the temporary storage area.
Again....it would be much better to keep Time Machine backups on a drive just for that purpose, and other data on another drive for that purpose. This is clearly one of those times when the fact that you can do something does not mean to imply that you should do it.

    Attempted solutions:
-I created a new User Account and I can download large files with no issues.
-I ran "Repair Disk Permissions" but still get warnings.
    Google Drive Warning:
    Spotify Warning:
But on my other user account I can use spotify and download large files, etc.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

how do i see how much hard drive space i have used

Select your hard drive's disk icon on the Desktop. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. The info is displayed in the upper pain of the Get Info window.

  • How do I change the desktop Icon for an external hard drive?  I have gone to "Get Info" and tried dragging and dropping  several formats of pictures and the icon changes to the generic image of that file type.

how can I change the desktop icon for an external hard drive.  Using LaCies and Dimple hard drives.

One of the things I've found with OS X (at least with Snow Leopard, which is my first excursion into OS X), is that all too often the thumbnail displayed on a file, whether a file created or one downloaded, is a false thumbnail. That is, when you do a Get Info on the file the icon in the upper left is the generic icon for that file type, rather than the thumbnail displayed in Finder. Makes it a bit difficult to copy.
Apparently Finder uses Preview in the background to generate the displayed thumbnail without actually creating one.
What I've resorted to doing, particularly with graphic images, is to process them with GraphicConverter - I have its prefs set to automatially add thumbnails and previews. With an individual file this means opening it in GC and doing a Save As. However, a much easier and faster way is when there are two or more such files; I put them in a common folder and drop the folder onto GC. GC then opens them in a catalog view, in the process adding real thumbnails and previews to each automatically. Doesn't take long to do several hundred files that way.

This article has a link for more information on finding your profile directory: [[Fix the "Could not initialize the application's security component" error message]]. On Windows 7, you can try this (either in a Windows Explorer window address bar or from the start menu search box):
    %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
You may see one folder in there and that's the one you want. If you see more than one, look for the one with the most recently modified files.

  • HT3275 Time Machine says my external hard drive does not have enough

Time Machine says my external hard drive does not have enough space for the current backup.  It needs 34 G out of a 250G hard drive.  All that is on the drive is earlier backups.  I recently added memory, which may confuse Time Machine into thinking it is a new computer.  How can I erase old backups and complete this one?

See #C4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If that doesn't clear it up, how much data is on your Mac?  If TM is only trying to back-up 34 GB, it should be able to delete old backups to do that (assuming you're running Lion).
It sounds like your backups may be corrupted.  Try to repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

If that's all you did, no.

Just erase the drive per #1 or #2 of Using Disk Utility.

So eventually you could end up using more data space in a back-up drive than the original drive, huh?
    With TimeMachine, yes.
With a bootable clone, no. Provided you don't save the backup states changes which CCC is doing now.
I prefer a straight clone backup, I keep many copies of clones on seperate hardware to "go back in time" with and thus avoid saving the changes with my clones.
I swear I tried to back up my computer on a 250g G-Drive and it told me there was not enough room. But I am not positive if the entire drive was available or not. I may have had it sectioned into 150 & 100 sections and I might have tried to back it up on the 150 section. or I might be imagining that.... either way, it didn't work.
Your data is going to grow, 232GB is rather small for a boot drive.
So your going to be needing storage drives eventually, just plan ahead and remmeber hardware redundancy is key.

The reason that threadjacking is frowned on (as mentioned in the terms use which you can read by clicking the link to the right on this page) is for the most part a practical one:
By starting your own thread your problem can get individual attention, focussed on your particular set of circumstances.
By joining somebody else's thread it becomes tricky to answer more than one question at the same time, and can lead to confusion for both parties.
So if you don't mind the minor inconvenience, please start your own thread (in the correct forum) so we can get to grips with your particular problem!

  • HT1750 My I mac won't boot, I have gone to restore but the apple hard drive next to the main hard drive says the drive is "locked" ??????  What to do?

I have an IMac which won't boot up and when I tried the restore function the Hard Drive next to the Main Hard Drive says it is "locked" when I tried to use it to restore my system.  I have Mountain Lion which was working fine until recently.  Now I can sit LITERALLY for an hour waiting for the gear to stop spinning but not results for loading the program.   HELP!!!

As of 10.8.4,  the volume must be unlocked first.
Here’s how the unlock procedure works for Disk Utility:
Boot your Mac and hold down ⌘-R (Command –R) to boot from the Recovery HD partition.
    Open Disk Utility.
    Select your locked hard drive.
Under the File menu, select Unlock “Drive Name”
When prompted for a password, enter the password of the authorized account on the drive.
Once you unlock the disk, hold down the Option key on your keyboard and click on the File menu.
Under the File menu, select Turn Off Encryption… with the Option key held down, it is no longer grayed-out.
When prompted for a password, enter the password of the authorized account on the drive.
Disk Utility should display a progress window labeled Starting conversion to JHFS+
Your drive should now be unlocked.
