My 120gb ipod will not connect to itunes.

it shows up in windows as a hard drive. my ipod says it has 0 songs, but that i only have about 10gb of free space. i've gone through 5 or 6 of the troubleshooting steps and none have worked. i still have the songs on my computer, but the ipod is not usable. is there any fix for this? id rather not have to delete everything or reformat or anything if i dont have to, but i dont want to just throw this in the garbage. any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, your iPod filesystem is corrupted, so you need to Restore it, which will erase ererything in the iPod.
Here are a few reasons, why it get corrupted. (actually the filesystem is not updated)
Disconnecting the iPod before it finalised writing the filesystem after a Sync. - be patient, wait 2 minutes after the OK to disconnect screen comes on.
Timeout due to other Apps running like email, facebook, skype, web broswer. - Stop multitasking, disconnct from Internet
Conected to slow USB port or USB hub - Use the USB2.0 port at the back of the PC and disconnect all other USB devices.

My computer recognizes it but as soon as I launch iTunes I get the error message: An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. I have done ALL troubleshooting steps and it still gives me the error...... this only happend since I updated iTunes.

It sounds like you are connecting your iPod classic to your computer and iTunes becomes unresponsive until you unplug it.

Install any available software updates for your computer.
For Mac OS X: Click the Apple () menu, choose Software Update, and follow the on-screen instructions.

Update iTunes to the latest version.
For Mac OS X: Click the Apple () menu, choose Software Update, and follow the on-screen instructions. You can also download iTunes from the Apple website.
For Windows: Use Apple Software Update, or download iTunes from the Apple website.
Test with automatic syncing disabled.
For Mac OS X: Click the iTunes menu and choose Preferences. Click the Devices tab and place a check next to option to "Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically." Click OK.

Reconnect your device and test to see if the issue still occurs. If your device is recognized successfully, you may be able to isolate which type of data is causing the issue. If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.

Click Start, then type "Device Manager"
In the resulting window that comes up, find your iPod driver and delete it by clicking the red "x" icon in the action pane.
After that restart your computer and your iPod, unplugging your iPod in the process.
When you turn you computer and your iPod, plug in your iPod after loggin in.
This should get your iPod working.
After this, I don't know what to do although I can do further research if need be.

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Hi, I HATE to ask for help with this, but I HAVE looked everywhere and Google searched different wordings and have not found anything similar nor a solution to my problem! My good old iPod 4th-gen charges just fine in any wall outlet, in any house, but when I connect it to my brand new ASUS laptop that has Windows-8 and 3.0 USB ports using the charging/data cable, the charging process just keeps "blinking" BOTH the iPod and the laptop and it will not connect to ITunes and I get "A Device is Detected" message that keeps popping up and going away over and over right above the Windows desktop toolbar. When I go to control panel and select "Devices" it does show the iPod, but for only a split second and than it disappears, but than it comes back again for a split second and than it disappears again and just keeps doing that over and over and over! I have tried resetting the iPod while it is plugged into the laptop by holding the power and menu buttons, that did no good. I also tried uninstalling iTunes and any other Apple stuff listed and reinstalling it all, that did NOT work! The iPod, the laptop and iTunes ARE all fully updated! I AM using a brand new charging/data cable that I just opened up an hour ago (I've learned to keep a few brand new ones around at all times since these piece of garbage rip-off cables hardly last a week, even when you baby them!). I also tried a few old cables, they all do the same thing! I would like to get this piece of junk to connect to my new laptop, even if only once, so that I can change/delete some songs and transfer a few dozen photos,since I haven't been able to do any of that stuff since my old laptop (that NEVER had any problems connecting) died way back in May! lol. Ok, first off my laptop and 360.. it will connect to all of those, i can even add/remove stuff on itunes with my laptop, but when i hook it up to my home pc it will NOT connect to itunes or show up in my computer, i have the latest itunes fully updated, i have tried every method on the ipod help section, resetting blah blah TRIED IT ALL
it says its connected on the bottom right but it just wont load.. when i run ipod diag on itunes it says its not connected, ive even tried other programs like ipod acess, anapod etc. and i cant connect it with them either.. i dont know what to do someone PLEASE help
