My 13" macbook won't charge

When I plug in my 13" macbook the charging light indicator on the magsafe only shows very dim orange colour. Anyone know what could cause this?

  • My late 2008 MacBook won't charge, is it the battery or could it be that I possibly damaged the connection spot on my laptop?

I tripped over the power cord and the piece that goes into my MacBook separated, I glued it and it was working fine until the other day someone tripped on it and it separated but it also looked different on the mac boo side, so I scratched of the rubbery film around the metal, again this is on my MacBook end. Now my computer won't charge, I thought maybe the charger was broken, but then I tested another charger and then my charger to another Mac and it worked, so I know it's not my charger, but somehow my computer. I don't know if the battery is fried, it had been not holding a charge for too long and it is the original battery but I don't know what  the exact problem is, is a new battery needed or is it something bigger and internal? I don't want to bring it to the apple store for fear of a hefty price tag...help?

Hopefully, and more than likely, your magsafe charger has failed. Inspect the cord  near the bending points for cable strain, that's common. This oage may also give you some guidance http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1713

  • MacBook won't charge on AC, MagSafe light dim & green only

    Hello all,
I'm hoping that someone might be able to help. My MacBook refuses to charge its battery! It sounds like a few people have similar problems.
The AC adaptor is NOT the problem - or at least, not the fundamental problem, since I just swapped mine for the known-good one from my sister's almost identical (and week-old) MacBook, and I get the same symptoms.
The symptoms are that the MacBook allows being powered from the AC adaptor, but in the battery menu bar item it simply says "Battery not charging". The AC adaptor's light is green, but extremely dim. It should be orange, since the battery is not full.
Sometimes it does charge, and I haven't been able to figure out why it does so at these times. Even then, the AC adaptor's light doesn't come fully on, staying dim and green while it's charging the machine.
I've reset the power management unit by pressing the power button while no battery or AC adaptor is connected, followed all the steps in Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters (Ts1713) including checking the MagSafe connector for dust and broken pins, reset the pins on the connectors, swapped the trailing cord on the AC adaptor, and restarted my MacBook many times!
I'm running 10.5.4, so I should have Battery Update 1.2 installed but I've never run it.
Also, if I take the battery out completely and run the MacBook just off the AC adaptor, the green light on the AC adaptor is still very dim. The system recognises that there's no battery but I don't get the strong green light that I should get.
Do I have a hardware problem, and if so is it with the battery or the MacBook?
I don't have another battery to test with right now and I can't get to an Apple dealer.
Below is the Apple System Profiler output for the Power section.
Many thanks in advance for your help.

  • Macbook won't charge or run off mains for more than a few seconds

Last week my Macbook power adapter seemed to fail - the light had disappeared and my battery slowly ran out of power. I tried using a different power cable into the adapter to see if the fuse had gone, but this made no difference. After trying several plugs and trying to use it with the battery removed, I decided to purchase a new adapter.
This worked instantly - the light came on and my Macbook was no longer dead. However, this only lasted for a few seconds or minutes, when the light on the Magsafe plug went out and the Macbook powered off again.
After trying several things I realised that the problem wasn't really with the adapter - it seems to be with the Macbook itself. If I disconnect the power cable from the adapter and reconnect, the light comes on and it charges again. This happens when the battery is in the Macbook, but also when there is no battery and I run just from the adapter. I can run the laptop pretty much indefinitely as long as I'm happy with 0-10% power in the battery and continually disconnecting and reconnecting the adapter, literally every 30 seconds or so!
Any ideas whether this is likely to be the logic board or just the power connector inside the laptop? I've tried resetting the SMC already (by disconnecting battery and adapter then holding down the power button for 5 seconds) but that has zero effect..

I too have problems charging. The macbook and macbook pro adapters seem flawed; if one looks into the problem on any of the many forums, you can see that this problem is widespread. The dang adapter works intermittently. There seems to be no rhyme or reason behind when it 'decides to work or not,' I think it is somewhere in the vicinity of 65% off and approximately, 35% on; in other words, it works properly only about one out of three times. When I first got the macbook it might have been a bit better but this problem of intermittent charging might be getting worse. All I know is several times lately, I have had to wait until randomly retrying it got it to function and by then my battery will have exhausted down to below 10%. Has anyone discovered any tricks which help kick this adapter in? I have heard rumors of a recall but that is all it is, I believe . . .

  • Won't charge unless macbook is off

My 4 day old macbook won't charge its battery while it's open and turned on. When I plug in the adapter the light will do its usual (green for a few seconds and then turn amber) and the icon on my desktop will indicate the battery is charging- but this only lasts about 2 minutes before the light turns off and my desktop icon goes back to showing how long until my battery runs out (and it does run out, so I know its not just a problem with the adapter's light.) The battery charges just fine when the computer is off or asleep.
I'm new to Macs and this is my first laptop of any kind so my question is: am I just making a mistake or is there a problem with the hardware that I should have checked out? Thanks in advance for any help!

That was the first problem I had with my Apple one year ago. It has only gotten worse! If I had known it was the beginning of a bigger problem which Apple refuses to admit to, would have returned it right then and there. I have had that problem fixed and am on my 4th going on my 5th battery and am constatntly sending it back to Apple -- After getting your situation fixed, my computer now runs hot, fan runs quickly and battery dies. It is a symptom of a bigger problem -- Unfortunately, Apple has not been able to fix it and I am truly disappointed in their attitude towards what seems to be a common problem which is known by many but not admitted by Apple.

  • Macbook won't turn on, won't charge either (no green/amber light)

So I was cleaning my keyboard today (just with water and a towel) and after cleaning, the screen shut off but my macbook was still turned on (could hear the fans). It wouldn't respond to anything and I tried a hard shut down but this did not work either. I was forced to take the battery out to shut it down.
Now it won't turn on. I tried plugging it into my magsafe power adapter but it won't charge. There is no light (neither green or amber). My battery still has 2 green dots when I test it.
I've tried resetting the power settings by removing the charger, battery, and then holding the power down for 5 seconds. This did not work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had a very similar problem. My battery died about nine months ago and I've been going off AC since then. It recently started not turning on though.. I closed the lid one day and went for a walk and when I came back about an hour later it was like it was in a constant sleep mode. Since then it turned on once successfully. But I am getting the same dim green light for about three seconds and then it goes full. When I try to turn it on the fan or hard drive (not sure) starts spinning and the screen flashes but then it just sits with the sleep light on. When I read your thread though I realized I may have gotten it wet when carrying it to and from my car. I no longer have a warranty or care plan or whatever so apple won't help me one bit. SO yeah I thought I'd share that and maybe it can help you somehow..

  • Brand New Macbook Pro Won't charge

I recently joined the Mac world, and purchased my first Mac, a Macbook Pro. I have had it less than 3 weeks and the battery won't charge. I have called the support line, several times and they had me take the battery out put it back in press 4 keys and restart worked a couple of times, but I had to do everytime I shut my computer down, not fun at all. Finally they sent me a new battery and that one doesn't charge either. I'm kind of frustrated with the entire process, I was thrilled to be advancing in the technology world but now am very disappointed with the service to help get this issues resolved. So now I have a product I can't use, brand spanking new laptop collecting dust, and the only solution they have for me is to drive 100 miles to an apple certified dealer to have them look at it, only open Mon - Fri. So know I have to take off work, drive way out my way to have someone look at my computer. But the catch is they might charge me even though I purchased the extended 3 year apple warranty. So know I'm back to using my PC. My thrill is gone. All I want is to use my laptop, and experience the Mac way, does anyone have any solutions. So far my experience with mac support is not too thrilling what's the purpose of purchasing the warranty and I recieve no help on their end. HELP?

that doesn't make any sense.... you have a 3 year warranty... they can't charge you... thats the point of the warranty!!
you don't have to drive out to drop your laptop off.... call apple care and they will send you a box in the mail so then you can put your laptop in it and send it back to them so they can repair what they need to repair.... you said that you can't use it anyways so i guess it wouldn't matter that you would be out a laptop for a few weeks....
I wouldn't let them say they cannot do anything for you, thats just ridiculous, you paid good money for your computer as well as a warranty... be persistent.

My MacBook Pro retina 2013 won't charge. I've checked all connections which are all ok. Little red light shows on magnetic plug, instead of usual green.

If you are seeing a Red LED, you may have a faulty MagSafe Adapter.
I remember reading that the orange light is produced by a combination of a Red and Green LED. If that's the case, It seems that the adapter isn't lighting the green LED properly at that time.
I would suggest you seek service with your nearest Genius Bar (Apple Retail Store) or Apple Authorised Service Provider as they have access to diagnostics which may assist in isolating any hardware issues you may be experiencing.
    Cheers.
