My 17" 1.5gh Powerbook with a 26" sony bravia display

I was wondering if My 17" PowerBook G4 1.5gh with a 128mb graphics card can handle a brand new Sony Bravia 26" LCD HD TV without any significant performance loss or problems. I want it to be my only monitor (i want to close my shell and i know there might be problems with that too) and i want to use an external keyboard.
Basically i want to transform my current powerbook to a full time desktop computer. I do ALOT of internet and iphoto work and i always have multiple applications open. Normally i have Safari, iPhoto, iTunes, and maybee a few other really small applications open at the same time. A Really important point is that i use Expose' ALOT... will it be slower? will i notice a perfomance slowdown graphically? Is it a good idea to use i high end flat screen TV like a 26" Sony Bravia as my computer monitor. ALL HELP, TIPS, & EXPLINATIONS are greatly appreciated. I want a HUGE screen NOW!!! Thanks - Richard

  • Problem getting fullscreen resolution with MBP and Sony Bravia KDL-40W2000

    Hello,
I usually dont post much on forums so sorry if my question is noobih but this time i think i need help so please bear with me. I have searched the web and read lots of posts without anything that helps.
I recently got my new MBP 15 last week and wanted to watch a movie on my Sony Bravia KDL-40W2000 TV using XBMC.
So i connected my MBP using the original Display port - DVI converter and then a DVI-HDMI converter. So my picture was connected to the HDMI port of my Sony tv.
After a few adjustments on my Tv using pixel for pixel the best picture i could get was almost 85% of my tv which left me black edged. Using the OSX display setting i got 1080i so i also tested SwitchResX and got out 1080p (1920x1080) but the picture looked the same as 1080i,e.g i still had the black edges. Really cant understand why 1080p does not cover the whole screen to be honest, maybe someone have a good explanation?
When i removed the display mirroring i got the full-screen but on the downside the desktop (on tv) looked somewhat zoomed in so i couldn't see the top-menu.
I also played around with overscan but it did not help to remove it. Without overscan the picture gets even smaller on my tv leaving my with even bigger black edges.
I cant figure out how to get the proper resolution on my tv.
I hope someone with similar TV can help me out. Any other suggestion, ideas are more then welcome.
ps. How does overscan option works anyway, is it not suppose to cover the whole tv screen? why does the picture get the black edges?
    Cheers

Hi OpenChannel...did u ever find an answer in the discussion boards. I have a 40" Bravia and was wondering if I could connect via DVI to HDMI cable.

  • PowerBook G4 to Sony Bravia DVI-to-HDMI

I would like to us a Sony Bravia LCD HDTV as a primary monitor for a PowerBook G4 with a defective display. I have a DVI-to-HDMI cable. I hooked it all up and turned everything on. The Bravia displays this message: "Invalid Format". I've tried changing the resolution and other options in the display preferences, but nothing seems to please the Bravia. The Bravia has a 120 Hz refresh rate, but the PowerBook will not let me adjust the refresh rate above 60Hz. Is there a way to get the PowerBook to send the Sony Bravia correctly formatted input over the DVI-to-HDMI cable?

I am mad 'cause I have been a big fan of apple and now this. I got the last version of the cinema display and now I hear althought there arem so called standards that even with apple products there are lots of issues. I have a TV box (Swiss) and just tried to get my display running.
In vain. No knows to solve the problem. OK.. But I haven't even got an answer what the problem is. It sounds easy. Take a converter from HDMI to DVI (which should be compatible according to Apple/swisscom/connector producers a.s.o) Nothing not even something is coming out.
    I bet you don't have a solution...

  • Strange Issue With QIP 7100 STB and Sony Bravia TV

I am having a strange issue with a 27" Sony Bravia Television connected to a Motorola QIP 7100 HD STB.When viewing a non HD channel the television input number display, resolution display, picture mode display and clock come on and off every few seconds. The issue stops when I tune in to an HD channel. If I return to a non HD channel the issue reappears. I am new to FIOS from Directv where I did not experience this. The television is connected to the STB via HDMI. Everything else seems fine except for picture stuttering that I am getting on all of televisions but I'll save that issue for a separate thread. I tried removing the TV remote to no avail and changing the batteries in both the FIOS and TV remote with no success either. This is a very annoying issue and I feel that it must be caused by the STB. I was wondering if anyone experienced anything similar to this and if they were able to correct the issue. I would greatly appreciate any assistance. Thank you and Happy New Year.

It is possible that your Sony doesn't support the mode the STB is set to for SD (some HDMI TV inputs don't support all formats that the STB can output).
Have you tried going to the STB settings menu and under Video Settings played with the various options for 4:3 override?  This setting controls the STB output for SD and lets you set 480i, 480p, and OFF (also STRETCH at least on some firmware version).  In the OFF setting the STB upconverts your SD to whatever the HD resolution is set for - 1080i or 720p.
    Hope that solves your issue.

  • 1 ghz G4 powerbook with 768 megs of ram, Leopard?

Hi, should I update my 1 ghz G4 powerbook with 768 megs of ram with leopard? will it run faster or slower than the current OS which is 10.4.10.
    Thanks

    Good Afternoon,
I'm afraid that is a question only you can answer based on your need for the new features in OS X 10.5 versus 10.4.10.
Statistically, yes, you can upgrade to Leopard however with that limited amount of memory you may experience a less than ideal user experience from Leopard. If you do consider upgrading to 10.5 you will want to also budget in a RAM upgrade to the maximum supported amount by your Powerbook.
Personally if I was going to spend that much money on an upgrade to 10.5, I'd consider saving my money a bit longer and just replace the equipment with something a bit newer such as one of the new Santa-Rosa MacBooks.
    Just my thoughts! 

  • Mac OS 9 needed on Powerbook with OS 10.3.3 only

I have just purchased a used (immaculate) 17 inch Powerbook with OS 10.3.3 installed. When installing Photoshop I have to put in 5.5 first then upgrade CD to install Photoshop 7.
Photoshop 5.5 apparently requires OS 9 to install. When I put the CD in a "Classic" symbol popped up in the dock but didn't start up because OS 9 was not available.
In order for me to install Photoshop 7 I need to start with 5.5 and then upgrade.
I have had many Macs since '89 and have upgraded etc.. I have an old OS install CD for a G4 However it won't start up without alraedy having OS 9 in the machine.
How do I install even a new CD of OS 9 if I can't get it to start up in Classic?

    # Question
I am informed by FF that there are updates. When I click on them the window just says it's trying to connect to the server and never does. I am never able to update and I believe FF is now up to 3.6.17.
I have a Mac Powerbook with 10.4.11 and FF 3.6.13.

That is because that Firefox 3.6.x version has been released later than the Firefox 4 version.
If you have problems with updating then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded

  • Is there a way to turn on Powerbook with lid closed?

My Apple display allows me to turn on the Powerbook with the lid closed by pressing the touch button on the display.
My question, is there any other way to turn on the Powerbook with the lid closed, perhaps through some USB peripheral or keyboard (with external display and AC power connected)? In other words, I want to know if I can have the same functionality as the Apply display's touch button through some other device or method.
If the Apple display can do it, there must be some other device or method to do it, but I can't seem to find any. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
    12" Powerbook G4 1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Thanks. But is there a way to turn on the Powerbook (as opposed to wake from sleep) through the use of some USB power swtich button or other method?
I want to hook it up to a non-Apple display (with the Powerbook AC power connected) and be able to powerup the Powerbook without having to open the lid.
I looked on the web for this answer, and it seems some older Powerbooks allowed a USB power button to seperately turn on the computer but this feature was not offered to Powerbook G4 or later. While not necessarily through USB, but if the Apple Display can turn on my Powerbook (with the Powerbook AC power connected) then it seems technically possible and I would think there should be some alternate methods to do the same thing.

  • External Monitor on Powerbook with no display

Alright, so here's the deal...I have a Powerbook G4 Titanium 15 inch, on which the internal display has since died. I removed the display completely and purchased an external display which has worked fine with current OS. But, I have decided to erase the disk and use Linux primarily while partitioning a small amount of space to retain Mac OS 10.4. But, after erasing the disk using the original Mac OS X 10.1 restore disc, all installer startup discs including the Software Restore, Mac 10.4, and Linux will not appear at startup, only the Mac OS x 10.1. I assume this is because the startup disk does not recognize the external monitor and assumes it is running the program on an internal display which is not there. Is there anyway I can permanently erase the internal display options, to in effect make the Powerbook act like a desktop or tower with regards to the external display? Thanks.

If you can’t see your MacBook screen because it’s broken or the backlight is off use the F7 key to switch between Extended Desktop and Mirror Display if you have the Early 2006 model 1,1 MacBook or the Late 2006 & Mid 2007 model 2,1 MacBooks.
From the Mid 2007 MacBook User Guide: F7 (video mode toggle key) Switch between dual-display mode (extending the desktop across the built-in display and an external display) and video-mirroring mode (presenting the same information on both displays).
This won't work on the newer MacBooks.

  • FCP 4.0.1 Install Problems on POWERBOOK with OS X.4.10

I had some facts wrong in my earlier post. I have a powerbook 1.33 Ghz 17" running OS X.4.10. I did a clean install of 10.4.10. When I try to install FCP 4.0.1, I get to the liscensing window and enter my serial number, but the "OK" button stays grayed out.
This is my second laptop of the same model. On the first one, everything installed normally, and I upgraded to FCP 4.5. That powerbook developed vertical lines on the display, so I returned it to the reseller. I do not know what OS was installed.
I have my replacement in hand, but now I have install problems. Can anybody shed light on this?
    Thanks.

Triple check the serial number you're inputting... ones can look like L's and zero's can look like OH's etc... it must be exactly right.
