  • Why does my 1st gen iPad crash so much?

Hello. I have a 1st generation iPad (64GB WiFi + 3G) that I'm getting more frustrated with lately. It will freeze up or take a very long time to respond (very long is GREATER THAN 30 seconds) on many apps. As a result, I've found myself forced to limiting myself to Safari, Mail, and Tweetbot. I used to like using Flipboard and Evernote, but those crash often... especially Flipboard and Tweetbot.
At max, it runs iOS 5.1.1.
I've tried quitting apps, restarting it (power off and then on) and resetting it (Home + Power). Today, I've had to restart it three times and all I've been using have been Tweetbot and Safari. Ten minutes ago, Tweetbot just hung... and hung... and hung. Pressing the Home button didn't even work immediately. If I waited 30+ seconds, it did respond, but still slowly.
Is it that my first-gen iPad is obsolete?

Hence, I'll have to disagree with you re: considering going with either a 2nd or 3rd generation iPad. I personally won't buy a used one and, even if I did, it would definitely cost me more in the long-term as I'd find myself in the same position I'm in now, of having to replace outdated hardware and thus costing me more in the long run.
Ah, you're one of those Champagne Taste, Beer Budget kinda guys.
You might also consider refurbished.  These are like new iPads with a warranty from Apple.  They are a bit cheaper, but still several hundred dollars.

For me, I simply replace these mobile devices every couple years.  At the pace of change today, analyzing cost/benefit doesn't really help matters, except perhaps justify a decision to buy a higher end model.  They all go out of date at some point, so I figger I'll just get what I want.  Bottom line is that if you still want an iPad that works, you're going to have to shell out the cash.

  • Why does my 1st gen iPad always turns itself off and goes back to the screen. Whether I'm reading news, iBooks, etc, suddenly it goes off.

If that doesn't help, the battery may be dying and need replacement. See here (tap on Battery Replacement): http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=servicefaq&geo=United_States&product=ipad
Alternately, might consider start saving for a new iPad. The newest iPad 6 should come out in the next few months. When it does, sellers will want to get rid of old inventory with good deals.

  • My 83 yo dad has a 1st gen iPad.  He has so many photos he would like to view on his HD TV; so I purchased Apple TV for him.  But I am having a hard time setting this up.  I have been able to get his music on Apple TV, but he really wants the photos. Help

  • HT5457 iPad 1 is a lot newer than iPhone 3GS. It has the A4 chip! Why no IOS 6 for the 1st gen. iPad?

iPad 1 is a lot newer than iPhone 3GS. It has the A4 chip! Why no IOS 6 for the 1st gen. iPad?

quite surprised it suggests that iPhone 3gs s more powerful than the iPad1? iphone 3gs is supported. something is fishy. i don't want to fall out of love with apple products. looks like it's a business decision to cut support for iPad 1 - not technical shortcoming. if apple cut support for 3gs they will upset customers who just bought 3gs before iphone 5 was launched.... tsk tsk tsk.. i'm not from US. hope to see a class action suit by US peeps to resolve this...

  • HT4623 how can i update my 1st gen ipad when its running at 5.1, i do the update scan and it just says ipad is up to date? why will it not update to 7.1???

how can i update my 1st gen ipad when its running at 5.1, i do the update scan and it just says ipad is up to date? why will it not update to 7.1???

iPad 1's can only be updated to IOS 5.1.1. The iPad 1 doesn't have the processing power to handle any higher.

  • Why apple give up 1st gen iPad to support IOS 6

WHY APPLE GIVE UP 1ST GEN IPAD ,IOS 5.1.1 IS Last OS UPDATE FOR 1ST GEN.
AI........MY 1ST GEN IPAD CANT UPDATE TO IOS 6 ...GIVE UP

This question has been discussed several times during the past couple of days...concensus seems to run along the lines of the A4 processor and memory in the original iPad not being able to handle the demands of iOS 6.  Performance would be so degraded it would not be good to use.

  • Ipad 1st gen keeps crashing since 5.1

My 1st gen ipad keeps locking up and then rebooting to the apple logo since updating to 5.1.  It doesn't seem to matter how long the device has been in use, there is no pattern in terms of which apps are being used.  I've reset to factory in itunes and restored from a back-up, took several tries because ipad kept rebooting while trying to transfer purchased items to itunes.  Finally got those to complete and then performed the wipe and restore. Issue persists. Occasionally screen will go "crazy" before crashing producing oddly colored rectangles all over the screen. This usually requires a manual hard reset (sleep and home button for 10 seconds) before reboot will occur. I heard this may have something to do with multi-touch navigation so I turned that off.  No difference.  I've noticed a trend towards certain apps causing this more readily than others (mail app, moog anology synth app, snyth x app, all of the korg apps, beatmaker 2, etc), but it doesn't seem to really matter. Basically things that worked without issue ever, are suddenly locking up or rebooting my ipad. Right now it rebooted while trying to terminate apps running in background (a grand total of 3), which is something I do rather religiously to free up memory. Some crashes are just a black screen that wont go away unless a manual reset is performed.
I use this device quite extensively for the music apps (which at this point is also a rather hefty dollar investment in and of itself), but the crashing issue is out of control.  Is there a way to downgrade the device to 4.3 or even 5.0 (I had zero problems with 5.0 oddly enough) without jailbreaking it?
I'm willing to admit (begrudgingly) that this could be a hardware failure and I'm SOL. I'd like to be able to at least try another version of iOS to either confirm or deny that is the issue.
Just did the rainbow rectangles of death again, manual reboot, automatic reboot, lock to black screen, manual reboot, and now it says the battery is empty ,but it was just at 80%.  *** is going on with thing?

I ended up doing that the other day.  I was told that there was an error in updating the firmware to iOS 5.1 and that it wasn't rewrite-able and not fixable.  I was further told that there is probably a problem with the dock connector which probably caused the update to write data intermittently.  Additionally I was told that as I didn't opt for apple care, my 1 year warranty expired 1 month 2 weeks ago (I bought the iPad 13 1/2 months ago), and that a replacement would be over $250 and a decent amount of wait time, which because of contracted work load I can't afford to miss out on I couldn't wait the time it would take for shipping.
I have two real problems with what I was told: 1. I didn't use the dock connector to update the iOS, I did that wirelessly through the settings app. 2. I was told Apple's iOS update broke my previously fully functional iPad.
I ended up replacing it with an iPad 2 16gb wifi model, which they insisted they didn't have, but actually did. In my choice of either white or black. There was a real strong push for me to drop $500 for an iPad 3 without much consideration to the fact that I did that just over a year ago.
Lesson learned on my part, if I didn't need that apps I've already purchased that I use to generate income, I'd be done with the iPad forever.

  • My 1st gen iPad is not recognized in iTunes, help!  I have uninstalled, reinstalled, stoped and started the mobile....nothing is working.

I have done everything I can find online to solve my problem, but I still have the same problem.  My 1st gen iPad is not recognized in iTunes!  Cannot sync!  Please, any suggestions from anyone?  Anyone else having the same problem?

    Hello casinojen,
I would be concerned as well if my iPad was not recognized by iTunes.  Thank you for providing all the information with the steps you took in regards to this issue.  I found an article with a few more steps you can take (you can skip the steps you have already taken):

  • 1st Gen iPad won't connect to my home router. EVER. Refuses to connect to my wifi.

HELP ME PLEASE WITH THIS 1st GEN IPAD refusing to connect to Wi-Fi ISSUE
It shows up as having full signal, and shows the name of our network. But go to Safari and try to go do anything and it spins and spins then tells me "Cannot Open Page...Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding."  Well...it never responded in the first place, so....
Apple says it works fine on their in-house system when we took it in. Told us to call Comcast. More than once, Comcast walked me through 20 mins of reconfiguring the router and the iPad and multiple phone calls and a trip to Comcast later...no go.They say it's Apple's problem now or that I have to buy a special Comcast technical support account for further help --- which doesn't guarantee anything....
This is rather BS to have this unusable thing for so long and now be expected to pay MORE money to get something like this working....and why won't anyone take responsibility? It cannot be that big a deal.
We now have been unable to use our expensive iPad for about 4 months or more. What the heck am I supposed to do? Throw it in the trash take the huge loss as a life lesson to not bother paying Apple prices for stuff that only works for a few months before some glitch or software issue makes it unusable without having to buy a new unit or pay someone to keep trying only to hear '...sorry, call someone else...'*
*Same thing happened with my perfecctly perfect dual G5 tower...motherboard burned out for no reason. Paid 1200 to replace that...then a year later the other main board fries...on a computer that barely ever got used...ended up having to literally give it away on Craigslist and buy a new iMac...which then made all my expensive music software and projects unusable. So I have about three years of special music project files sitting on a harddrive that will never be able to be used.
...I'm beyond frustrated since all we wanted the iPad for in the first place was to be able to check some websites and emails...help me help me.

If the iPad works on other Wi-Fi systems then I'd have to agree that it is your own router causing the problem. To be sure take your iPad to a Starbucks or your library and a few other places than have Wi-Fi and test it out. If it works in those locations you'll need to talk to Comcast some more and be assertive. Something could have failed in your router.
Regarding your hard disk full of music. Put it in an enclosure and connect it to your Mac. Other World Computing sells all sorts of hard drive enclosures that you can install your drive in.
Computers can be frustrating but solutions are sometimes just around the corner.

  • 1st gen iPad gone Dark

my daughter has an 1st gen iPad and the screen has recently gone black.  Tried restarting but to no avail.  HELP!!! I don't remember the last iOS but definitely no iOS7..

    Hello there, Tinka2Adee.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great steps for troubleshooting issues with an iOS device not powering on:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2802
    Particularly:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,

  • Multi-Touch Gestures disabled on 1st gen iPad in iOS 5?

Apple, please fix this!!!  This is absurd!  Why on earth would you handicap 1st gen ipad owners?  There is no hardware limitation with the 1st gen, so why remove this from iOS 5 for ipad1?   As a developer who used xCode I enabled the new multi-touch gestures on my iPad and they were a great addition, and now to read that under iOS 5 they are no supported on first gen ipad is simply beyond me.   Outrageously stupid.  I already installed iOS 5 on my iPad.   So I am simply out of luck????

Please fix this Apple! I have been using them for a while and going back to not having them on my iPad 1 is VERY frustrating!
Productivity levels decrease while using the iPad in the "old school" way clicking the home button all the time to switch through apps. If gestures are to be non existent in iPad 1 I think it would be good to know the technical reasoning behind this. Also, the online documentation should be reviewed and promote this as part of iPad 2 and above, not iPads as described in:
    http://www.apple.com/ios/features.html
"iOS 5 includes a few new moves and shortcuts to help you get around even quicker on your iPad: Using four or five fingers, swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar, pinch to return to the Home screen, and swipe left or right to switch between apps."
Thanks and looking forward to a fix

  • HD Films on 1st Gen iPad

Is anyone else having issues getting a HD film (The Dark Knight Rises in my case) to transfer from my iMac to my 1st Gen iPad. Is it because I have an old iPad or am I doing something dumb?
    Appreciate the help.
    Regards

In case anyone is interested I have solved it by downloading the film(s) on the iPad directly. I spoke with Apple to ask why this would be the case - didn't have the answer.
    FYI.

  • Trouble with loading videos - Manually manage music and videos not supported now with iOS5 and a 1st gen iPad?

Since updating my iPad 1st gen to iOS5.0.1 videos don't get loaded properly into the Videos app.
On the Summary page in iTunes of my docked iPad, I have always checked the box for "Manually manage music and videos".
I have my reasons for doing it this way, but that's for another thread perhaps.
The problem is that when I load a video to my iPad this way - by simply just dragging it from the desktop and onto the iPad, under Devices in iTunes - it copies/updates, and shows up on the iPad like it always has before iOS5. But now, with iOS5, when I undock, it can't be found anywhere within the Videos app on the iPad. The only way I can find it is to do a Search, which seems to find it, but when I click it, a different video plays - the first video in the Movies list in the Video app. Dock the iPad again, yes the video is there, according to iTunes, but no way to play it once iPad is undocked.
My suspicion is that with iOS5 you are no longer able to use the "Manually manage music and videos (Mmm&v)" that you will be forced to run everything through iTunes - and probably iCloud. I've unchecked the Mmm&v box, and get prompted with "Are you sure? - All existing content on the iPad will be replaced with content from your iTunes library". READ - "Rebuild your entire video and music collection, and this time run it all through iTunes. Welcome to iOS5. Have a nice day or two wasting your time rebuilding your entire video and music collection. Don't fight it. Use iTunes for everything! Until we finally make iTunes a decent piece of digital media management software, then you'll have to do it all again."
Okay, rant over - Anyone out there with running iOS5 on a 1st gen iPad with the Mmm&v option checked and able to load a video manually (not through iTunes)? Any other thoughts?
    Thanks

Yea, i managed to fix my issue in a wild fashion way But I DONT suggest it to anyone.
I like to hear why it happened after upgrading iTunes and if there is any peaceful solution.
Bythe way, here is how i fixed it :
1-i checked "manually manage music and videos" checkbox and clicked on "Sync" button
2-It showed a threating message that it will erase my music and videos ,......
3-I clicked on OK button and let iTunes do any thing she said , but the second it started to delete my treasures from my iphone, i disconnected my phone by pulling USB cable.
Now i have my musics and videos untouched and got that Option enabled again and i can manage my Music/Videos and Books manually.

  • 1st gen iPad

I have the 1st  gen iPad which don't have the new iOS 6 software and my kindle app will not open because of the new iOS 6 update. How do I get this app to open because 1st iPad is on version iOS 5 software?

You can try closing all of the apps in the recents tray, clears Safari, reset the iPad and see of that makes a difference.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data.
Now close all apps. Tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button twice.
Then reset the iPad. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
You can also try restoring the iOS software and see if that helps at all.
