My 1st gen iPad doesn't give me the option to add a tel. Number to iMessage! Why?

How do I fix this issue?

The normal way an iPad uses Messages is through an email address because iPad is not a phone and cannot use phone numbers.
However, if you also have an iPhone, you can associate the iPhone with the same Apple ID as the iPad, and you will get the option of adding the iPhone phone number to your receiving information.  This way, if someone messages you using your iPhone phone number OR email address, you will receive that message on both your iPHone and iPad.
