My 1st gen nano wont connect at all to my mac! help!

So I recently recieved my friend's 1gb first gen nano. Whenever i try to connect it, the "do not disconnect" symbol comes up, yet doesnt blink, and the backlight doesn't go off. not only that, it wont come up at all on Finder or iTunes, ot anywhere else. does anyone have any advice??

I am trying to fix my friends ipod 1st gen nano also with the same exact problem, do not disconnect symbol, backlight stays on, does not mount on desktop or in dick utility. I have reset it, also reset all the settings too in the ipod menu. using a mac pro that I have used many ipods on so not sure on this one. cable is good since it works with my girlfriends ipod, same gen.
Any help on this subject would be nice! Thanks all!

  • 6th Gen nano wont connect to computer or itunes.

Alright so when i connect it itunes identifys that i have plugged in an ipod but it cant properly identify it, usually when you plug in a new ipod you give it a name and all that, but i cant even get that far. My itunes is updated and ive unplugged and plugged in my usb's multiple times and restarted my computer multiple times, used to safely remove hardware button to reconnect it, and turned off my firewall, it seems ive tried everything and its not working.. im about to just take it back becuase im begining to think its defective. It wont show up as a driver on my computer either, and ive tried resetting it without itunes, nothing seems to be working... if theres something i missed leave a post ill try it and get back to ya(:
:EDIT: ive also followed the entire apple troubble shooting page for the 6th gen nanos and it didnt help me at all D:

The older pods are different from the newer ones. The newer ones need some software to be working correctly that the older ones don't.
It sounds like the apple USB stuff is not installed correctly for you. Here is an article from apple on what to do:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923
Some other things to keep in mind:
    - Don't connect the iPod through a USB hub
    - Connect it directly to the computer through a USB port on the back, not one in the front. The USB ports on the front of Windows based systems are notoriously underpowered.
    hope that helps,

  • Is there a way to erase all content from a 1st generation nano without connecting to my pc?

Is there a way to erase all content on a 1st generation nano without connecting to my pc?

No, you need to connect it to a computer running iTunes to manage the iPod's content (or erase it).

  • Apple TV (1st gen) will not connect to iTunes

I am at wit's end. Until a couple of days ago, my 1st gen Apple TV connected fine to iTunes. Now, it will not connect no matter what. I have tried the following:
    1) restart both ATV and my machine (Win 7 running iTunes 10.7)
    2) restored ATV factory settings and reinstalled software
    3) hard-wire via ethernet to my computer (which some articles seemed to indicate should work - nothing happened)
    4) hard-wired both my cpu and ATV to a router - nothing shows up
    5) removed and reinstalled all Apple programs, including iTunes, QT and ancillary
    6) vaired between hard-wired internet connection and wireless for ATV
    7) did everything on this page, including open ports manually http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1453
Most frustrating of all, my wife sees the device instantly in her iTunes. AGHH!

Same thing happened to me, starting right after I  updated the Apple TV firmware. I restarted both devices to no avail. I can, however, play my itunes library content from the apple TV's "computer" app. So there must be some kind of connection. What I've lost is the ability to stream music from iTunes using AppleTV as an "airplay" device.

  • 1st gen nano music seems hidden after update to v1.3

I have a 1st gen nano and recently did the update to v1.3 (that iTunes told me to) and then all of the music was hidden.  I can tell that the iPod is still full ( iTunes shows 75% of "Other" and Windows explorer also shows 75% full) of music but just not showing it in iTunes or Windows Explorer. It seems that the files may have been buried deep within the iPod and nothing can access that far down in the file structure? Any help would be much appreciated, Thanks.

Try putting your iPod into disk mode, following the instructions in this article:
    Putting iPod into disk mode
Then, try to restore the iPod in iTunes, if it is being recognized there.

  • 1st Gen Nano Recall Notification

Finally!  I got notification from Apple this evening that they will be replacing my 1st gen nano.  I had to verify serial number, but other than that they said they will send me packing materials and instructions to send it back and they will send me a replacement.  They didn't say what they would replace it with (refurbish 1st gen, 2nd gen, 3rd gen...).  Anyone have an inkling?

My guess is they will simply be shipping refurbished 1st-gen Nanos. They warn that if your unit is personalized, you will not receive a personalized unit back, which is the only "difference" they indicate. So, I'm feeling pretty sure that we'll just be getting the same thing with a new battery. I wouldn't mind at all if they came with a new plastic case, but I'm not going to expect anything because this is cool enough as it is; my battery doesn't last 10 minutes after unplugging the unit from the charger, so I'm happy to get any replacment with a good battery. Also, there is a 90-day warranty on the replacement, which is standard for a refurbished unit; further evidence that it is a refurbished (something).

  • Will a USB cord for iPod touch fit the 1st Gen Nano?

Hi, I am about to purchase a used 1st gen nano because the wireless fm transmitters are cheaper, and to be honest, I don't want to ride around with my 3rd gen Touch in my car all day. But it doesn't come with the USB cable, and I was wondering if I could use the same one for later my iPod touch?

Yes, since the creation of the dock connector, all dock connectors have been the same... They were originally available in FireWire, but that cable specification was discontinued before the iPod with video...any new iPods will not work with them, however, all iPods with a dock connector will work with the USB version of the cable...

  • How do i find my 1st gen nano library and transfer it to my itouch library

I had a 1st gen Nano and purchased an itouch. I noticed that once I registered my itouch, the nano library never came back up. I no longer have the nano. How can I find my nano library on my hard drive and transfer those songs to my itouch?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The music should be in your iTunes library. Open iTunes to configure what's put on your iPod touch.
If you had the +iPod nano+ set to manually managing music and have been deleting it out of iTunes after copying it to iTunes (not a scheme I could ever recommend) then you'll have to re-rip or re-import the music to iTunes.

  • Hi all - any idea how to download songs from an old AOL iTunes account - have updated to Apple ID which is fine for new songs but didn't realise this wouldn't include the old songs.  Have a 1st gen ipod with the original purchases on if that helps

Hi all - any idea how to download songs from an old AOL iTunes account - have updated to Apple ID which is fine for new songs but didn't realise this wouldn't include the old songs.  Have a 1st gen ipod with the original purchases on if that helps

....... is there a way for me to get my old music library (which was controlled by my dad's apple ID) onto my new mac, but from that point on, start using my own apple ID for purchases?........
Yes, once the content is in iTunes on your computer, just click it to play and authorise your computer to play it by entering your Dad's ID and password.
Log into your own account and start purchasing your own content which will then be added to the existing content.

  • Disc mode on 1st gen Nano

I have a 1st gen Nano that went into disc mode about a week ago. I reset it and reloaded it and it was fine until this morning. It went back in disc mode. Is this an indication that it is failing, or is there something I can do to prevent this from happening again?
    Thanks!

What's the average play time everyone experiences??
After I use it for about 2 hours (starting with it
fully charged), it stops... says there's no more
charge left. Is this normal, or is my Nano just
getting old?? I need it to go longer for my
    workouts..
NOT normal, but your 1st Gen nano IS getting older/
    Any advice?
Turn off alarms. Set equalizer to OFF...
Do the new ones have a longer battery life?
Yes... they're spec'd at up to 24hours of music play as opposed to the 14hours of the 1st Gen nano.

  • Itunes not recognizing 1st gen nano?

itunes not recognizing 1st gen nano?

    1. Update iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes still can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod.
    2. Click on your windows start menu. Type in "services". Click on it and when it pops up, on the bottom of it click on "standard". Now Scroll down to find "Apple Mobile Device" Right click it when you see it and click on "Start". When it has started, close iTunes and replug in your iPod and it should show up.
    3. Check the USB cable
    4. Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
    5. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service and verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed.
    6. If you just want to add some photos, songs and movies from computer to your devices, you can use an iTunes alternative to do the job.
    7. Check for third-party software conflicts.

  • Is there a reputable place to buy a battery for a 1st gen Nano?

I have a 1st gen Nano and it constantly shows low battery/apple symbol and won't load to play. I can, however, sync it to my iTunes... My guess is that the battery needs to be replaced. Has anyone done this themselves? And where can I buy a good battery from a reputable company? I've bought batteries before online for cordless drills and phones and after 3-4 months they fail to hold a charge for any longer than 10 mins.
FYI: I didn't follow through with the replacement program because my iPod is engraved.

  • How Do I Back Up My 1st Gen Nano?

I've received the return box from Apple under the Nano 1st Gen Replacement Program.
Before I send it to Apple, I want to be sure I have backed up everything on the device so I can restore that data to my new replacement device.
I've been searching for over an hour for instructions that would help me do the back up and have found exactly nothing!
Why should this info be so difficult to find???
What I'd like to know is:  How do I back up my 1st Gen Nano AND how do I restore the backed up data to my new, replacement device when I finally receive it?
Thanks for any help you can provide...  BTW I use Windows XP Pro, but if you're feeling generous, perhaps you could post the steps needed to do these tasks in both Windows AND iOS.

You can follow this guide to transfer the songs from your iPod nano to computer first, and then copy them to the external drive. Hope it helps. Feel free to email me if you need further help.

It fast forwards. Just hold down the right-arrow key and it fast-forwards while you are holding it down. That's how I got through all the O.J. stories on my downloaded news podcasts.
