My 1st generation iPad won't restore

My first gen ipad won't restore. It won't turn on, it won't turn off, it won't show the apple logo when I try to put it in DFU mode, and it won't show the 'connect to itunes' symbol. Basically it won't do anything that all the trouble shooting tips suggest!
When I plug it into the mains via it's charging dock, it flashes the apple logo every 10 or 15 seconds, but when I plug it into the mac it only manages to flash very weakly every 5 seconds or so.
After many attempts, I managed to get itunes to recognise that there was 'an ipad in recovery mode' but every time I tried to restore it, I got the message 'unknown error 1602' and when I looked this up, it basically said it was the same as about 10 other error codes and that all I needed to do was change the USB port and/or restart itunes and/or the mac and it would all be good.
I did all of these things several times and in various permutations but to no avail.
I'm not 100% sure of the operating system on the ipad (and of course I can't check at the minute,) but I'm sure it's iOS 5. something! (I did update regularly, or when prompted by the system, but haven't done it in a while because my wife uses it now.)
My itunes is up to date - Version 11.0.1
I know it's a long-shot but can anyone help?
Thanks
PK

I have a similar problem. But my iPad shows the connect iTunes screen and gives error 2001 when I try to restore it.
My iPad's battery was fine but I didn't use it for like 2 weeks. It's battery would've discharged and it turned off. When I tried to charge through wall socket, it got into the restart loop where it would show apple logo and turn off. So I did the simultaneous holding of Home and Sleep buttons for 10 seconds or more. It started showing connect to iTunes.
When I try to restore, the iTunes does the usual "extracting file" or something and go upto preparing for restore. But the iPad screen turns off from "connect to iTunes" and iTunes gives the error 2001, and the screen is back to connect to iTunes.
Also, if I don't plug in, the iPad seems dead, doesn't wake up or anything.

My Father gave me his 1st generation ipad.  He reset all setting back to factory and now I can't load itunes.  I have plugged it into two different computers and I can't get it to work.  HELP!!

You can't delete iTunes. The preinstalled apps cannot be deleted or installed again. It's there somewhere.
Swipe from screen to screen to look for it.
Check Settings>General>Restrictions and make sure that you didn't disable it.
You can also reset the home screen layout and the icon will reappear - but the home screen will return to the way that it looked when you first activated your iPad.
    Settings>General>Reset>Reset Home Screen Layout.

  • My 1st generation ipad won't power up. It flickers but then no display. It is fully charged and I have restored to factory settings

The ipad originally lost half of the display on the screen and now won't display at all, other than a slight flicker when you first try to turn on. I have been able to back up the contents and have restored to factory settings. The battery is fully charged. There is about 20gb of memory space available. Please can anyone help in diagnosing the problem?

The screen has probalby died. Or the backlight.
You can look into getting it fixed but you may be at the point of comparing investing to fix an older device or putting that money towards something newer that will have a longer life.

  • Hello I went to wipe my 1st generation iPad and then tried to update the iOS now the iPad won't work at all any ideas what I can do?

Hello I went to wipe my 1st generation iPad and then tried to update the iOS now the iPad won't work at all any ideas what I can do?

You can't update the original iPad beyond iOS 5.1.1 so if you were already running that version, there was no reason to wipe the iPad to try to update.
Won't work at all, doesn't tell me the whole story. Does it power up but not respond to anything? Does it not power up at all? Some detailed information in context would really be helpful.
IF the device will not start up, try a reset. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple Logo appears on the screen.

I had the same thing happen to me.  It's a bug in iPhoto 9.4.2.
The first time you run iPhoto after upgrading to iPhoto 9.4.2, it "updates the iPhoto library".  This sometimes tickles a bug where iTunes can see all your iPhoto albums, but iTunes thinks they are empty.  Since iTunes thinks all your albums are empty, it dutifully deletes any photos from your synced iOS devices.
It's easy to tell if this is the problem you are seeing.  Open iTunes and go to the photos sync panel for one of your iOS devices.  If you have multiple albums checked, but iTunes shows a total of 0 photos, then you have the problem.
I spent an hour with an Apple Genius.  he couldn't find any mention of this problem in their internal support system.  His recomendation was to reinstall the operating the system.  I suspect that this won't solve it.
The only solution I have found is to restore iPhoto 9.4.1 and the corresponding iPhoto library from your backups.
I would refrain from upgrading to iPhoto 9.4.2 until Apple has a fix for this issue.

  • HT1695 I have the 1st generation iPad.  All of a sudden it will not connect to my wi-fi.  It finds my wi-fi, but will not totally connect.  I have done everything...reset network, rebooted router etc and it still will not connect.  Any suggestions?

I have the 1st generation iPad.  All of a sudden it will not connect to my wi-fi.  It finds my wi-fi, but will not totally connect.  I have done everything...reset network, rebooted router etc and it still will not connect.  My other divices are connected....iPhone and 3 Macs.  Any suggestions?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Why can't I update my 1st generation ipad past iOS version 5.1.1?

My 1st generation iPad crashed all the time. I can hardly use it any longer. Someone suggested updating to a new version of iOS. My current version is 5.1.1 & it keeps saying that is the latest version. Why can't I update it??

In theory you're right that Missy8818's device will "continue work as it always has" except that more and more apps will require updates that she won't be able to do. Before long, it really won't work like it always has.
Not exactly. Just because apps have updates available, does not mean they are required. You will not be able to update apps to get the new features and looks but the version of the apps you currently have should work as they do right now even if they are no longer available in the app store. Just be sure to backup up your device and your iTunes library.
My frustration is also in the lack of options.. I have a 15 yr old Win 98 machine that I could still use if I wanted to – albeit with outdated, old,  but still functioning  software. Sure using these older versions I give up newer bells and whistles, but that is a compromise I CAN CHOOSE to make if I wish to hold on a little longer to my hardware. Apple offers no such choice with the Ipad. Their timeline for obsolescence is your time line. Take it or leave it.
As with your iPad, the 15 year old Windows 98 machine will not be able to update to the most current versions of the apps (programs) either, including Microsoft's own Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player.

  • 1st Gen iPad, can't restore on any computer

I was given a 1st gen 16Gb wifi ipad at work.
The ipad was functioning and I decided to restore to factory settings to clear our all the prior users info and be able to sync to my iTunes.
Seemed to be going well enough until I got to the screen that shows the USB cable with the arrow to iTunes...
now I can't detect the iPad on any computer so I can't complete the restore.
I've tried my late 2011 Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion fully updated, my 2007 Mac mini with Lion, my family PC with windows 7, and my work PC with windows 7. None of them detect the iPad being connected... the PC's don't show the device in "my computer" and iTunes on the Macs don't show the device.
All of the above machines can detect my iPhone, no problem.
I've tried 6 different cables of varying ages.
The iPad doesn't even make the connection bleep noise when plugged into a computer.. it does when plugged into a charger.
I charged it to 100% with the original 10 W charger.
I've gone through all the different techniques of holding buttons and such, but the bottom line seems to be I just cannot connect to a computer.
Could the prior owner have it so it can only connect to his computer and I'll have to restore from that machine?
Thanks for reading. I look forward to any further advice before making an appointement at the Apple Store.

I had the same problem with my 1st gen iPad,(my iPad would not power up even when connected to the charger) I held down the home and reset button and "voila" my iPad powered up. I hope this helps someone in the same predicament

  • HT5457 How do I update my 1st generation IPAD to IOS 5.1 and I do not have a software update feature on it.

I have a 1st generation IPAD and it is currently running IOS 4.3.  I would like to update it to IOS 5.1 but am having difficulty doing it.  I have followed the update software instructions in ITUNES but my IPAD will not display the update software feature under General in Setttings.  What do I need to do?

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

  • 1st generation iPad running iOS 5.1.1 and can't seem to update the iOS.  Any ideas?

I currently have a 1st generation iPad that is running on iOS 5.1.1.  I have been unable to update the operating system.  In fact, when I look for updates under the general settings icon nothing comes up.  Shouldn't this older iPad be running on iOS 7.0.2 like my new iPad?  Also, I have 19 app updates that I can't even access.  I'm assuming this is because iOS 5.1.1 is too antiquated, thus not meeting the requirements for the other apps to update.  Thank you for any help or advice you can offer.
