My 1st generation iPod isn't recognized by Windos or iTunes,

When I plug my shuffle into the USB port, it is not detected by iTunes or Windows. It still gets charged but I cannot access it to change the playlist. I have songs in the library, but the 'sources' thing never comes up. My friend's works just fine--on her computer.
If its something technical, you'll probably have to explain how to do it, as I'm not exactly the most technical person out there.

By all of those suggestions, do you mean the ones I mentioned in the paragraph about or the ones in the support article I linked? Does this 5G iPod via still power on?  DId you try connecting it to another PC or Mac to see if it is recognized there?  Did you check the dock connector for any signs of debris or damage to the pins that could be preventing a connection to your PC?
Any idea how long the average iPod should last? Ours if from 2006.
Most people never get the iPod to last 6 years, so consider yourself lucky. That's quite a time span!

  • TS1363 1st generation iPod shuffle does not show up in iTunes (windows 7)?

1st generation iPod shuffle does not show up in iTunes on my Windows 7 PC (but shows up in my computer).  Tried all the Apple trouble-shooting steps (some several times).  It used to work with Windows 7 on this PC.  Are there other steps I can try?

I'm not sure what "all" means, unless you state them, so if you have not done so already, you should use this procedure to reset the iPod shuffle
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1655
Then, shut down your computer (power off) and start it up, with iPod shuffle NOT connected.  Run iTunes.  Then, try connecting the iPod shuffle again.
Since this is a first gen iPod shuffle that IS recognized by the computer (so it's probably not a bad USB connector), you can also try using the iPod Reset Utility
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1238
This is for the first and second gen iPod shuffle only, and does a lower level reset than using a normal Restore in iTunes.

  • HT1719 why doesnt my 1st generation ipod shuffle appear on my devices on itunes?

Why doesnt my 1st generation ipod shuffle appear under my devices on itunes when i plug it in? i have windows 7. I got the ipod today from a friend with their music. i deleted their music and added my own to the folder it was in. but when i unplugged it i still had their music and none of mine.

You need to restore the Shuffle in iTunes first. Then sync all of your music stored in iTunes over to it. Or is that what you did?

  • Ipod 1st generation shuffle isn't recognized by iTunes

Plugged my 1st generation iPod shuffle into the USB port and it isn't showing up in iTunes.
I have read through all the Troubleshooting steps and nothing seems to be working.
When I go to Eject Hardware though, it shows Eject Ipod, so I know my Dell PC (Windows 8) is seeing the shuffle.
    Odd.
I'll take any help anyone has!
    Thanks.

In iTunes, if the sidebar (along left side of window) is not visible, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
When connected, the shuffle should appear in the sidebar, under DEVICES.  It does not appear there?
If it does not, as a test, shut down (power off) your computer.  Disconnect all USB devices including hub, except for standard keyboard and mouse (if normally used).  If your PC is a laptop, connect its power adapter (so that it is not running on battery power).  Do this to reset the shuffle
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1655
Start up the computer, run iTunes, and connect the shuffle to a direct USB port on the computer.  Any difference when the shuffle is the only USB device connected?

  • My ipod isn't recognized by any computer & itunes, and desplays a sad face.

i have had my ipod mini for eleven months and this is the first problem i have had with it.
i went on a vacation to flordia, and while i was there my ipod crashed. i had dropped it once a few days before the crash, but it continued to play my music after i dropped it.
when i go to turn it on the apple logo appears, then the depressed ipod.
my ipod isn't recognized by any computer or tunes. when i plug it into my computer, the 'do not disconnect' screen doesn't even appear. all that happens is the apple logo screen, then the depressed ipod screen, then a recharging screen appears that is stuck on the lowest point possible.
i have already tried the "five R's" and everything else in the support pages, and so far they have helped me none. all they do is bring you around in huge circles, and you end up on the page you started on.
i run a windows xp, and have everything fully upgraded.
i know, i know, many of you are having similar problems, but could you please only post if you have an answer, thanks.

I know!!! It worked just fine one day, computer recognized it and i could add or remove songs at me leisure, but now I can't even charge it on a computer becasue it doesn't exsist to it. I also tried the five steps, but you can't restore the settings on it if the computer can't find it. Finally I had my sister bending the charge piece in the ipod just for it to show up, I restored it and it didn't make a bit of difference! I lost all 800 songs on it but I still can't charge it or add songs. If you find anything out, let me know!!!

  • 1st generation ipod touch not recognised by computer or itunes

My first generation iPod touch is no longer being recognized by my laptop or itunes. It wont charge etc or even show up in my computer. It will how ever charge through other things, such as through an xbox and a power supply. The USB sockets work fine on my laptop, phone connects perfectly, only issue is with the iPod. The trouble shooting only dealt with itunes but none of the issues it bought up were relevant, everything it suggested has been tried and tested and doesn't work. What can i do?

  • IPod isn't recognized by windows or itunes

Recently my ipod ran into some problems. Sometimes when I plug it into USB it says that the USB Device Not Recognized in a bubble on the bottom of the screen. Other times it will connect but will not open up itunes and won't show up in my computer and displays the "do not disconnect" icon on the ipod screen. I've tried reseting, rebooting, i have the latest itunes. Is there a remedy?
5th gen with video   Windows XP Pro

I have kinda of the same problem but I think mine is worse. See i just got my new ipod back from the ipod service thing so i plug it into my wall charger first to get it all the way charged before i connect to my comp. After i get it fully charged i go and plug in into my usb device with the apple connector and as soon as i do i get the usb device not recognized, but it gets better at that same time my ipod's backlight wont come on and theres a message on the iPod screen but i cant read it because of the back light is off, then i notice that there is a lowbattery sign on the upper corner(i think it was the right) then it shutsdown and now i cant get it to charge in my wall charger or my computer and it still says usb device not recognized when its plugged in.
And also as a side note it wont even say usb device not recognized when i plug it into the back of my comp its like i didnt even plug it into the back
So if anyone could help me it would be most appreciated, and im shure no one has had this mutch bad luck with an ipod

  • Ipod isn't recognized by PC or ITunes, but it charges

    Hey guys,
My Ipod has worked perfectly untill today.
I came home and plugged in my Ipod to my computer and it connected, but when I looked again ITunes was opened and it said:
"an ipod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly".
It charges, but it is not recognized and *when i open Itunes it disconnects*
    I have tried everything.
    I have reinstalled Itunes
I have changed the (F:)to (G:) and back again
    I have reseted my ipod
I have changed the USB port
    I have restarted the computer.
I Have done pretty much everything and it still won't work.

    Have you updated iTunes?

  • Please help!  My ipod isn't recognized by computer or itunes

Thank you in advance for reading this, I'm about to lose it. I have spent 12 hours trying fix my problem, and nothing seems to work. I did everything suggested by the apple site, and other misc. sites out there.
Last week I put music on my ipod video just fine. Then, yesterday, I plugged in my ipod to my computer, and nothing happened. It still charges it, but that's it. It won't show up in itunes or my computer.
The only thing that is different from last week than this week, is I have traveled on a plane (hopefully the security people didn't zap it), and also, I purchased an ipod docking station (called iBlaster)....do you think that has anything to do with this?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I'm about to blow up!
    Thanks you all!

    Hi,
I'd been really frustrated with ITunes not recognizing my IPod after failed attempts at using the "5Rs" to resove the issue. I just wanted you guys to know that I found a resolution posted under http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1372 and after following the instructions, I "forced" ITunes to recognize the Pod and it is right now, as we speak, syncing my entire library back to the IPod! THANK YOU to whomever posted this solution! I was so lost without my IPod and was about to go on a trip without it! Whew! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ipod isn't recognized by computer (or itunes)

i received an ipod video for christmas. i was excited, but so far, i'm not impressed. i turned it on, and a little sad icon showed up with the apple support website link underneath. a problem? already? i just turned it on! so i decided to plug the ipod into my laptop computer. my laptop won't recognize the ipod, and thus, neither does the ipod update software. all that the ipod does is cycle through this pattern: screen with apple logo, screen with sad ipod icon, and battery screen (the battery is frozen, though. it doesn't indicate that the battery is actually charging). while this pattern cycles, occasionally i hear an annoying clicking noise. *click click click click click* is this sound from the hardware within the ipod? i don't want to have to listen to it all the time. i'm also disappointed with how easily my fingerprints cover the ipod, front and back. i'm afraid i'll scratch it... so at the moment, i want to return it to the apple store. what is happening to my ipod? what's wrong with it??
    these ipods are very tempramental...
    thank you

yes, i've installed the software and i've followed the directions. i have an ipod mini- i've done all of this before. nothing new.
charging. well, that's the whole problem now, isn't it? if the computer cannot recognize that i've plugged new hardware into it, it definetly won't send power to it, hmm? i had been plugged into my computer for about 3 hours, and NOTHING happened. so the answer: no. i haven't fully charged the d%#$ thing. i haven't been ABLE to do so.
uh, yeah, i know that i'm a human being. well actually, i could be some deranged mutant alien from mars, but how would you ever know?? ...wow... latex gloves? sounds like a possibility. i'll be sure to tell anyone who asks me about why i'm wearing them, i'll let them know it was you. thank you for the brilliant idea. har har har. oh- and how could i keep the clear film on the ipod if it actually came off after putting it into the lame, sorry excuse for a "case" that they give you?
i declare my ipod officially: dead. thanks for the help, though. latex gloves, man. rock on.
i'm returning it because it's defective.
    the end.

  • Ipod isn't recognized by my computer, itunes,or Ipod Updater

When i plug in my ipod to my computer, it says "USB Device not Recognized". Can anyone help me?? I would really appreciate the help!!!

    Preston,
Try this and it works in my case.
    1.Put your iPod in diskmode
2.Plug your iPod with your computer
3.Your computer may not recognize your iPod, but try few attempts until your iPod showing "Do not disconnect"
4.Then force unplug (not EJECT - just force unplug it and I know it is not a proper way, but which may let your computer to recongnize your iPod) your iPod from the computer and replug again for few times, until your computer showing an iPod icon on the desktop - amazing it did in my case
    5. Reformat your iPod by using Disk Utility
    6. Reinstall the latest iPod update software
Bear in mind that you will loss all your songs in your iPod so make sure you backup your songs
By the way are you connect your iPod with XP or Mac? I have experience that the XP's formatted iPod got recognize in Mac machine and vice versa, then you can format the iPod before your reinstall your prefer iPod update PC or Mac

  • 1st Generation iPod Touch No Longer Recognized by Windows 7 PC

I have a 1st generation iPod Touch (no camera) that can no longer connect to my Windows 7 pc. Plugging in the iPod via USB does not trigger any sort of dialog box in Windows and it doesn't trigger a message saying a device has been connected; the iPod does not show up in either iTunes, Computer, Device Manager or Devices and Printers, either as an Apple mobile device or an unrecognized device, and does not charge when connected to USB (though the wall-charger still works). As far as my computer is concerned this iPod does not exist. I had successfully synced this iPod as recently as one week ago and am ready to pitch the thing in the garbage if I can't find a solution.
I have the latest version of iTunes as well as the most up-to-date Windows updates. I have already followed all the steps listed here (iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows) multiple times with no success.
I also have tried following the instructions listed here (Re: For those Windows users who suddenly cannot see their device in iTunes. Here's a solution that has worked.) but this also hasn't worked since the iPod isn't recognized in the Device Manager and I am not given the option of updating the drivers, manually or otherwise.
I have uninstalled/re-installed iTunes and all related Apple services multiple times. The Apple Mobile Device Service is functioning normally. iTunes diagnostics indicate that there is no device connected no matter what I do. I have reinstalled my Windows USB drivers and changed the settings on the USB Root Hub in the Windows Device Manager to disable power saving options.
I have tried connecting the device to another PC which detects and syncs another apple device (iPhone 5) with no issues, and had the exact same result: the computer doesn't even recognize an iPod is connected.
I can't update the Apple Mobile Device Drivers because the device is not recognized by my machine in any way.
I even completely reset my iPod and that just left me with a unactivated iPod that still isn't detected.
I am really unbelievably fed-up with the useless "try checking your USB cable"-style advice that people seem to offer on this forum. If anybody has dealt with this issue and has any serious advice other than "re-install iTunes," it would be much appreciated.

You said "I am really unbelievably fed-up with the useless "try checking your USB cable"-style"
    - Did you try another cable?
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    Try on another computer
