My 2006 Mac Pro (2.66 Dual-Core) graphics card has died on me...

After the loading screen, I usually get some form of this (Screen flickering and repeating itself) so I assume this is due to my graphics card not working properly?
I have a GeForce 7300 GT in my Mac Pro now and I'm wondering what to do now? Since I need a new GC, I might as well upgrade so what is the best card my computer can handle right now?
Also what are my other options if I wanted to upgrade my processors?
Any help is appreciated.

Every Mac Pro model running 10.6.4 or later can accept the Apple/ATI 5770, which uses one aux power cord. In the Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) or Mac Pro 2,1 (2007) they run slightly slower than their full rated speed due to PCIe 1 slots.
Be sure you get the version with Apple firmware, or it will not work under Mac OS X. Flashed PC cards will not light up until Mac OS X is fully loaded and running, making them useless when debugging.

  • 1st Generation Mac Pro 2.66 dual Core(4 cores total) 5gigs of RAM

I'm still on Logic 8/Tiger. All running very well. Typical projects run about 30 tracks. Use lots of Vi's Omnisphere, Trillian, and RMX included.
Wanting to move to 10.6.2/Logic 9.1. Is my first generation Mac Pro up for the upgrade? Will I still have plenty of juice?

    Thanks for any input!

I also have a similar set-up but with 8 GB's RAM. I kept the old HDD with the Leopard 10.5.8 and Logic 9.02. Installed a new HDD then did the upgrade. To be honest, it was a PAINFUL process re-loading in all of the software plus updating the software! But, for me at least (knock on wood), I've had no problems with Snow Leopard and Logic 9.1. My first "test" was to run my lastes sequencing project which has a total of 30 virtual instruments and plug-ins from various companies (Kontakt 2.5 Player, Music Lab, "External Instruments", Audio Ease's Altiverb, Universal Audio plug-ins) and all worked well. Now, to be very clear, please realize that this was only 1 "test". But I noticed right-away better usage of the CPU than the previous version. For the previous versions (Leopard 10.5.8 with Logic 9.02) of this one "test" I had to set the buffer to 512 in order to do a problem-free mix-down. But with the upgrade of Snow Leopard/Logic Pro combo, I was able to mix down this project with a buffer setting set to 128. (I'm quite happy with that setting.)
FYI, I'm using Logic Pro 9.1 in 32-bit mode. I tried the 64-bit mode, but some of my plug-ins didn't work in that mode (Music Lab's RealStrat and RealLPC, which I tend to use frequently.) But I'm happy using 32-bit mode, especially using Native-Instrument's Kontakt 4.04. Again, all works well.
Just thought I would share a positive experiece with the upgrades. Good luck with your decision.

  • Mac Pro 2.66 Dual Core Intel Xeon (April 2007) - Hard Drive Upgrade

My hard drive is making rather worrying clicking noises so I think it's time to (very quickly) pick up a new drive.
I'm a little confused about what kind of drive I should order. The drive it came with is a Seagate Barracuda ATA. Would anyone be kind enough to advise if I would be able to use an SATA II drive? I'm looking at the WD Caviar Black 1TB as they seem to have good reviews.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Please excuse my ignorance but when I look at my drive in about my Mac it says ATA. There wouldn't be any issues given this is an older Mac Pro from April 2007?
There is an ATA section in System Profiler (from "About This Mac"'s "More Info" button), but it for the optical drives. The hard drives are in the "Serial-ATA" section.

  • Card Swap From Mac Pro to G5(dual core)

My friend is interested in putting in the newer, yet to be released ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB card into his MacPro, leaving him with the stock Nvidia GeForce 7300GT 256 card sitting around and doing nothing. Do you think I could replace the NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE in my Dual Core G5 with the old 7300?

Nope, won't work. The ROM on the MacPro card is designed for systems that use EFI. It won't work on the G5, which uses Open Firmware.

  • Any news on G5 dual-core graphics cards?

Still waiting for something faster than my lame 6600LE. Any news?

Keep us posted doug. Carsten (?) did exactly the same as you a few weeks ago and found it helped, but held-back slightly because of the 1.1 release. Hopefully 1.1.1 unleashes the 7800 power again.
I'm in no doubt the Marketing bods in Aperture overpromised with what the 6600 delivered. I'm in no doubt someone in the dual-core G5 team needs a slap for releasing the systems with zero video card upgrades - totally unacceptable for any system manufacturer to do. Then make them available for new Customers only - talk about forbidden fruit !
As for directing people's frustrations, i use these boards to mintain visibility of the problem, the Feedback system and a time limit. I've said before despite Joe's commendable efforts to investigate, if he cannot persuade the powers in Apple to actually do something by say June 10th, then we do other things dissatisfied Customers do that Companies get embarassed about - what else is there ? Its now seven months since they created the problem and nine weeks since Joe began investigating. My bigger worry is when the new MacPros arrive our concerns drop even further down the 'top-of-the-line mac systems' priority list.
I've become a broken record on this issue (again), but until its solved, my Aperture experience very seriously degraded. I continue to put-up with it because i can see how Aperture will be an asset to my workflow in for future business. Forbidden fruit again !

  • How can I enable the GPU option on a new mac pro with 2 AMD D700 graphic cards?

I have recently purchased the new mac pro and I saw the GPU option is not enable and only recognizes the CPU one, what is frustrating. Does anybody know how to enable the GPU option?
    thanks

See this for details of how the GPU is used in After Effects:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2012/05/gpu-cuda-opengl-features-in-after-effects-cs6. html
Note that your card will be used for all of the GPU acceleration features but one---the ray-traced 3D renderer---which requires an Nvidia GPU. That is an obsolete feature that you don't need to worry about, anyway. There are many better alternatives to using 3D in After Effects, including Cinema 4D, which is now included with After Effects:

  • Can the 2008 Mac Pro (MacPro3,1) support two graphics cards?

I have a 2008 Mac Pro, I want to know if I can run two graphics cards in tandem?
I currently have a ATI Radeon HD 5770 installed for 1GB of graphics, I want to find out if It's also possible to run a second card to increase the total graphics power of the machine?
    I see two possible options;
First, run the HD 5770 in one of the PCI Express 16-lane slots, and the old NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT in the other available 16-lane slot; for a total of 1.5GB GPU power.
Second, would it be possible to run two ATI Radeon HD 5770 cards, in each 16-lane slot; for a total of 2GB of GPU power.
I realise that this would first require a power supply upgrade, as my machine only shipped with a 318 watt power supply. (Which would not support running two high-end cards.)
    It would be very useful.
    Thank you for any advice.
    Regards,
    Peter.

    Thanks for the information!
I wouldn't have thought there would be enough power capacity in the current supply to run two cards. - Would this mean OS X will only see one card whilst the other sits as inactive hardware? (Or does it mean that that the system will see two different cards?
    For example:
Would it be possible to use one card for a graphics intensive process in Adobe Photoshop, and use the other card separately with another application such as Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere Pro?
Also, how would a 64-bit application like Adobe Photoshop which has GPU acceleration utilise the setup? Would it only be ably to use one card at a time (per process)? Or could it utilise both cards at once to in essence get twice the graphics acceleration than if only using a single card?
Simply, can OS X assign each card to a different application/process? I hope that makes sense.
Also, any thoughts on how Bootcamp would handle two cards (since crossfire should be available in Windows?
Before I commit to purchasing a second 5770, would you seeing if my Mac will run the current card + the old NVIDIA 8800 gt?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Mac Pro 1,1 dual-core intel xeon 2.66Ghz, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT OSX 10.5.8 hangs on boot, can boot in safe mode, disc permissions verified, disc verified.  Please help me start it normally?

Hi there, when I turn on my computer it just hangs on a grey screen with an apple logo.  I didn't install any new software on purpose lately.  It initially froze when I moved the mouse to get rid of the screensaver where it had been behaving normally.  When the screen saver went away the screen was messed up and everything was frozen and the date and time were huge and distorted.  I did a hard reset and I'm just stuck on that grey screen.  If I leave it for hours one of the screens turns blue and the other is black, but I can move the mouse.  A ghostly image of the cursor is stuck in the top left corner of the screen,
I can boot into safe mode and everything is normal.  I reset the PRAM.  I verified the discs and the permissions.  I don't seem to have any data loss.  When I restart normally I still get the grey screen.  The only weird thing in the console is 24/09/09 10:59:27 AM kernel unknown SIGSEGV code 0 .  I would really like my computer to work.  Thank you.

Have you run the check for non-Apple kernel extensions suggested above?
It's easy, you just cut-and-paste the command into terminal. If there is any output, you just cut-and paste it back in here.
Linc Davis suggests this as a way to find those non-Apple extensions:
Please copy or drag -- *don't type* -- the following command into a Terminal window, press Return, and post the output (if any):
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 } '

  • Replacement graphics card for 2006 Mac Pro?

My Mac Pro is a dual-core Intel Xeon, model 1,1 purchased in 2006. The graphics card is doing death throes. I can't afford a new computer, so I need to replace the graphics card.
Can I use any PCI express x16 card, or are my options restricted? (They were at the time - there was a choice of two.) If my options are restricted, what cards can I buy?
    Thanks,
    Pam

ATI 4870 is your best bet. Ignore what apple says about it not being supported; it is.

I have a 2006 Mac Pro with two 3.0 ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors.  I have four storage bays. What is the maximum capacity of storage that can be accommodated? (I currently have 4 TB, 1 TB each bay and it's insufficient). Also, I have heard that I can configure the replace internal HD's in an external HD framework that can be used as an external HD.  Where do I go to find this external HD device that accommodates the replaced internal HDs?

You could put 8TB (3TB drives also but they cost more)
Can also use the Optical Drive ports (2) and put a drive or two in lower optical bay or to external box.

No, not really.... but a couple of tips...
    1) when you're pulling the old card out, remember there is a black plastic retainer clip at the inner (front of computer) end. I didn't notice that, and now it's broken.
    2) Get the 5770 from Apple, not a big box store.... those don't come with the power cable you need and may not work.
    3) Plug the power cable into the mother board (?) first. It's fiddly, especially if you have big hands.... then plug it into the card, then slot it into the computer.
There are demos on youtube, but they all seem to miss out the fiddly bits.....!

  • 2006 Mac Pro Cold Boot Failure

    Hi all,
I have problems with 2006 Mac Pro. It fails cold boot at 100%, first thing in the morning only. So I'm seeking expert advice.
    The spec is,
    Xeon 5355 2.66GHz x2 (Octo cores)
    ATI Radeon 5770(Apple Genuine)
    8GB Memory(4x1GB kingston, 4x1GB OWC)
    500GBx2 1TBx2 HDDs
I disassembled and cleaned PSU and Fans, reapplying thermal pastes on CPUs and North Bridge a month ago.
Then I booted, system froze at desktop, so I shut it down, reset PRAM & SMC. it booted normally but the upper riser card wasn't detected at all. I cleaned the slot contact and reseated DIMM modules. It was detected after that.
Everything worked fine for a few days but then I got random kernel panics, reseated RAM, reinstalled Snow Leopard but still got random kernel panics. Then ran AHT for a couple of hours and got an error code 4MEM/6....
I contacted OWC and they sent me a new set of memory modules. While waiting for the replacement, no kernel panics at all but DVD drive died as well as IDE cable, so I replaced both.
I got the replacement RAM but past a week, MP fails cold boot every morning. Below is what's happening...
    (1) With Kingston Memory, CPU B error LED is lit, I press SYS_RST, one of DIMM LED is then lit (always DIMM A1). Or sometimes, Power-LED is blinking.
    (2) With OWC memory, boots normally, then kernel panic within a few minutes.
    (3) With OWC memory, CPU B error LED is lit, I press SYS_RST, one of DIMM LED is then lit (always DIMM B1)
*(1) with new and old riser cards
*(3) after replaced 2 riser cards
Replacing riser cards didn't help. After these happen, I shut down by pressing power button for seconds and it boots normally without a hitch. Never get kernel panics nor system freeze. It means when it warms up, MP just works just like it should.
    Replaced so far,
    -- IDE cable (Apple Genuine)
    -- DVD drive (Optiarc AD-7200A)
    -- 4GB (1GBx4) OWC memory
    -- RTC battery CR2032
    -- 2 riser cards
Is the logic board dead or PSU or memory modules are still bad?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I have a Mac Pro dual 2.8 ghz quad core, circa 2008. Recently, I have been required to depress the power button to end a failed cold boot, then press again to boot, usually with success.
Every hard restart freeze, and can guarantee you end up with
corrupt caches, corrupt file system, corrupt directory.
Safe Boot is not effective in such cases, fsck from single user mode has a better chance.
Booting from another hard drive, install your bought copy of Alsoft Disk Warrior to rebuild the directory (it has deep scavenge files also).
The longer you continue to do just Safe Boot and continue using it, the more trouble and less likelihood of being able to repair the drive.
SMART is not smart enough, it tells you about the past, not what could likely happen, or if you have had bad sectors and I/O errors.
Have bootable backup clones and a drive that is a clean Apple OS and drivers that isn't used except for repairs and maintenance. Don't rely on just Apple Disk Repair.
