My 2009 Macbook Pro turns off every 5-15 minutes

Yeah, the problem started happening a couple of months ago, but it wasn't that big of a deal. I found that if I were to turn it off nightly it would behave better. It was fine for a while, but as of late it will shut off about every 5-15 minutes. It was getting finiky too, if someone bumped the desk funny it would turn off. I tried resetting the SMC but that doesn't seem to have fixed it.
Any ideas? I've thought about doing a clean install of the OS again, but it seems like it might be a hardware problem, so that probably wouldn't work.

I would suggest making an appointment at the nearest Apple Store Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Provider. What you are describing seems to show a problem with hardware.
To make an Genius Bar appointment check:

To find your nearest Apple Service Provider check the link below and then click the "Service" box. There you will be able to put your location.

It might not hurt to run the Apple Hardware Test that came with your Mac's OS & Application Software DVDs and note down any errors reported by it. For more information about the AHT visit:

Hope this helps!

It would be helpful if you indicated the model/year MBP that you have and the OSX.
    Perform SMC and PRAM resets;

  • MacBook Pro turned off on its own and now won't turn back on.

MacBook Pro turned off on its own and now won't turn back on.  Battery had 41% just before this happened and green indicator on power cord is showing, so it seems like it's charging.  What should I do?

The led on the power adapter should be amber if it is charging.  Green just indicates that it is supplying power to the MBP.
    Try a SMC reset:

However mine skips this completely and just turns off. WHY? does this mean the battery is bad?
Resetting the PRAM (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/26871.html) fixed the problem in my case. then i did the calibrate the battery again this time it went to sleep not shut down i did this 3 more times why?
the 3 forced shut downs without entering SafeSleep. with logs indicating improper shutdown, will that cause severe corruption to the os and do i have to reinstall the os now?2.66 ghz 2010

This is a current sensor on the power bus. This seems consistent with your symptoms.
A faulty sensor on the logic board means  the board has to be replaced,  take in for repair:

macbook pro turns off when i unpliug

You either need to plug in your charger and if that isn't working if your machine is less than a year old take it in to your nearst Apple Store and let them deal with it. Or if you are out of warrantee you will need to get a new battery for your Mac

  • Macbook Pro turns off during OS install

I have been given a 1st gen MacBook Pro to upgrade (clean install of Snow Leopard and a few apps). Specs are 2.16GHz with 2GB RAM and a (non-standard) 640GB drive. It is second hand so I don't know the history of it. After booting from SL DVD and starting the install (format drive first) the laptop turned off after a few minutes. Repeated process and same result and also tried a Leopard install DVD with the same result.
Any ideas? Never seen or heard of this ever happening to a machine short of having a power failure! The battery is fine and it will boot and run normally from an external drive.
    Any help appriciated.
    Cheers, Paul

    Try a new internal drive.

  • My wireless connection (MacBook Pro) keeps on randomly turning off every 2-3 minutes and each time I have to reset connection to my personal network

    Hey
I just got a new MacBook Pro a few days ago and set it up on my home wireless network. But the Wi-Fi keeps on switching off and on randomly - literallly every 2 minutes or so - and I have to check my personal network again so I could get back online. I looked through settings and network preferences/diagnostics to make sure I set up my own network account right and all looks normal.
Why does Wi-Fi switch off/on so often and so randomly? what can I do?
Thanks in advance for the help!

There is a small PRAM battery (different from the main battery) on the logic board that maintains those settings. Yours needs to be replaced. You can try to do it yourself, but I suggest you have it done at an Apple Store or another authorized service outlet.

Reset the SMC (System Management Controller) and re-calibrate the Battery then see how it behaves, if it still does the same thing then I'd be calling Apple about a replacement.

  • MacBook Pro turns off during boot?

This is kind of a long story.
I have a 13-inch, Mid-2010 MacBook Pro running OS X Mavericks. I was using it near a bathtub, when a moderate amount of water spilled onto the keyboard. I immediately dabbed out most of it, and put it upside down for some time. It was running then, with all the keys and trackpad working fine. t turned it off, and tired turning it on after half an hour. Nothing. I decided to keep it switched off for 7 days, during which I would open the lid every now and then to find vapor on the screen from the keyboard which I would wipe and close again. I turned it on when there was no vapor spotted for 3 days. I plugged it in after 7 days, to see that the battery status indicator was erratic. It turned on with a sound from the SuperDrive (the usual click). There was no startup chime. A few minutes later, it turned off. I decided to reset the PRAM and SMC, and I realized that I can get to my account window successfully (and type a 22 letter password) as long as I keep any key pressed throughout bootup (option, command key, etc). I have tried many times, but it just turns off with a "nik" sound. I haven't backed up, and I have about 270 GB of important data stored that I CANNOT lose.
If it helps, it's 250GB drive crashed in December but it was replaced with a 500 GB and has been running smooth until this.
Please help me! Any advice at all is extremely appreciated. Thank you!

Take the HDD out of the MBP and install it in an enclosure.  Connect it to another Mac and see if you have access to the HDD.  If so, copy what ever files that are important to you to another HDD.
Then you can take the MBP to an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.  Prepare your self  for unfavorable news.

  • MacBook Pro turns off rather than sleeping

I recently had my MacBook Pro serviced by best buy as it is covered under their extended warranty. None of the speakers were working and they had to replace the speakers as well as the logic board.  Since I have gotten it back the sound is working again fine but I have noticed that every time the MacBook should go to sleep (such as when it is closed or sits idle for a period of time) it turns off rather than go to sleep. I must then turn it on and go through the rebooting process every time I use it. I am just wondering if I am just missing a setting, more is there now something else wrong with my computer?
