My 2011 21.5 iMac keeps randomly shutting down
Hi, all -
I have a mid 2011 refurbished iMac that I bought last September from the Apple store. I love it, but it has a bad habit of suddenly shutting down on me. It started about three weeks after I got it. If I unplug it and plug it back it it always turns back on, although sometimes I have to do it three or four times before it'll turn back on.
Other times I try to turn it on using the power button and nothing happens. If I unplug it and plug it back in, it will turn on.
I took it in to the Apple store a few weeks ago and they ran all the tests on it and found nothing wrong. They did a reinstall of the OS but it's still shutting off for no apparent reason.
There's no pattern to it. Some days it doesn't do it at all and other times it'll do it two or three times in a row, sometimes not even getting past the bootup screen.
I found out the outlet it was plugged into wasn't properly grounded, could that be a cause? It's now plugged into a plug in another room that is grounded via an extension cord, but it's still turned off on me once in a while.
I've looked around and it seems this is a common problem with some iMacs, and some claim no cause has ever been found. I'm wondering if I should bother taking it back to the Apple store when they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Maybe it's something in the power supply to my house?
Any ideas out there? Thanks!
You can call Apple Customer Service and they should be able to provide you with Lion for your iMac.
Hope this helps

Imac g5 randomly shutting down
i recently purchased a used imac g5 from a computer store for around 500 bucks. I luv the computer, nut it began to randomly shut down in the middle of activity. I took it to the store and the technician said that everything looked fine. of course he ran it for twenty minutes and it did not shut down....get home later that day and it runs for about an hour and shuts down. I have been on it today to test it and it has run for 8 hours perfectly. Is this computer worth keeping? I see the numerous posts about this very problem. has anyone figured out exactly why these units do this, and should i get my money back and move on before i get in to deep?
Hey davie and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
Is this an ALS model?
Well look in terminal and see if there's something in the log. Go to; applications > utilities > terminal. If something's there post it.
Also there's this:
http://jimwarholic.com/2008/07/how-to-repair-apple-imac-g5.php
So check for bad caps on the logic board and also in the power supply.

IMac 2010 randomly shutting down, only reboots when power cable is unplugged and replugged
Specs
It's a stock 21.5inch iMac mid-2010, with the addition of some extra RAM - two more 4gb sticks bringing it up to a total 12gb - that I've had installed for roughly 6 months with no problems.
No problems with my Mac since we bought it from the Apple Store until the last couple of days when this started happening. I don't have AppleCare and obviously I'm out of warranty.
Problem
Seemingly random shut downs. I've tried to work out if it's to do with overheating, but I've been playing some graphically intensive games today and that hasn't killed it. The strangest thing is that most of the shut downs are when it's not even in use - the next time I sit down to use it it has been turned off.
I don't think this is a software problem as it's been happening on the OSX and Windows partitions.
Nothing happens when I press the power button until I unplug the power cable, wait a few seconds, plug it back in again then press the power button. This makes me wonder if it's a problem with the power cable? Any tests I could run?
Any ideas? Tests I can run? Or is it a lost cause?
Thanks in advance! After further testing, it seems to only be powering back on if I leave it unplugged for about 20 seconds. Is this something to do with resetting the SMC?

HP Pavilion PC keeps randomly shutting down without warning
My PC will randomly shut itself off without warning. This is especially annoying when I am trying to download the new Windows 10 update. I at least know it is not a virus, because I have done several scans and nothing has come up. If anymore information is needed to give a better diagnostic, please, do not hesitate to ask. Thanks in advance.

Firefox keeps randomly shutting down
Recently, I got a new laptop: windows 8. I downloaded firefox because that's the browser I'm accustomed to and I've never had any problem with it before. But now for some reason, I'll be scrolling through the internet, either doing something or doing nothing at all. I could be watching a video or reading an article it doesn't matter. But my browser will just shut down, as if I just clicked the X in the top right corner...but I didn't. There's no hang up. It just shuts down. And then I have to re-open the browser and that alert comes up saying that something happened and it wants to restart the tabs I had open. I've tried everything suggested on the crash suggestion page and nothing has worked. I've reinstalled firefox twice and nothing worked. This is just really annoying, I've lost important work done on the internet. Can someone please fix it?

Why does my laptop keep randomly shutting down?
My laptop for the 2nd time has shut down without warning. The battery is not empty and when I charge it it says it is full. Help
Yea. Apple Just released a new update to the SMC on MacBook Pro w/Retina. Im not sure what you compter model was, but it could likely be a overheating problem. Even if you computer is not hot to the touch, the SMC may think that your computer was overheating. So yea.. Just reset your SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow the onscreen instructions and every thing should correct itself. If you still have trouble create another post here and we can help you out!

I recently bought an IMac having always had PCs. I adore it now some of the initial teething problems with the HDD have been resolved (back up, clean disk, and rebuilding from scratch with a new copy of Snow Leopard)
Disk Utility now runs clean and the same can be said for ONYX.
But it keeps on crashing (since purchase - every couple of hours, or every few seconds).
This is putting me off the whole transition (not before I bought the NANO, Apple TV and various Software applications). It is out of warranty, and I have tried everything on this site - I would take it into a repair shop if I knew this could be resolved.
I am desperate for advice as I am looking like an idiot every time I try and show family/friends how kewl it is...
Cheers chaps, SophPost the first 50 lines only of the crash report

Iphone 3gs keeps randomly shutting down
My iPhone 3GS has just recently started locking up at random times; sometimes entering an app, whilst in use of app, trying to keystroke in, and when leaving an app. The screen goes blank but most of the time there are portions of back lite screen in random width and numerous vertical slices lite up in black color. I have to press and hold the power button for several moments to get it to start back up. In a 3 of the 12 cases after this occured the battery lost half its charge requiring a plug in power source to boot back up.
What could be potentially causing these failures? To make sure that it is not a firmware problem, reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button until the Apple logo comes back again. If this does not help, set it up "as new device" without using the latest backup, in case it is damaged.
How to set up your iPhone or iPod touch as a new device
Does it also start locking up when connected to the computer or adapter? If no, get your battery checked, this might be battery problem then. -

You have got a Mid 2010 15-inch MacBook Pro and the log shows that the NVIDIA GPU is damaged.
These MacBooks Pro have got a defective GPU that may cause unexpected restarts, black screens, kernel panics, etc. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
Apple is repairing all these MacBooks for free if they were purchased less than 3 years ago, so make a backup of your files onto an external drive with Time Machine and take the computer to an Apple Store or reseller. -
Why is imac randomly shutting down?
Hi everyone, My imac 24" intel (early 2009) 2.66ghz 4GB ram keeps randomly shutting down, It started after i upgraded to 10.8.1, It was running fine until then, I had the screen set to sleep if no one had used it for half an hour (not changed this for 3yrs) & it started to not wake up & i would have to restart then when i started using it would randomly shut down like someone had pulled the plug! When i got it going again it would do it again sometimes in 5 mins sometimes 10 mins, I spoke to apple on the phone did all the usual stuff they told me to do still the same, I'm going to the genius store tomorrow with the imac.
I have no idea what could be the problem.
Anyone had this before?
p.s I have had this 3yrs now so no warrantyHello,
Have you blown the dust out lately?

I having a problem where my iMac will randomly shut down without warning. Doesn't matter what app I'm using. The weird thing is that it ONLY happens after it has gone through a sleep/wake cycle. It doesn't happen after doing a cold start. The random shutdown happens anywhere from 30 secs to 30 mins after waking. I've tried the SMC reset, didn't help.
It is really starting to be a pain because I prefer to put it to sleep instead of shutting it off. Please help.I'm having same problem. Random shut downs are truly random with shut down interval changing from 2 seconds to 20 minutes or more. I've tried everything, including reset SMU, PRAM, disk diagnostics. Disk checks out. I also deleted the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file, then reset SMU again. No go!
From what I have read seems like a power supply issue. I guess I've got a good run since buying this iMac in Aug 2005. I read on another thread that www.synaptech.com has reliable replacements.
If anyone has any other ideas, then please share!

Macbook randomly shuts down after installing Mountain Lion.
I have a late 2008 Aluminum Macbook; as of last week I have installed Mountain Lion finally and I've come across a rather irritating problem: the laptop keeps randomly shutting down. I've noticed it primarily likes to go down when the battery is at 89%. I've never had battery trouble before, this happens even when the computer is not over-heating, so I'm fairly certain it's not a battery issue. After restarting the computer all the applications I was using are still open and any progression I had made on documents have been saved since the time of the crash.
I'm really at a loss as to what's going on with this. Has anyone experienced something like this or have any suggestions as to how to fix this?Hi ppl again :)
I found that screen is not disabled, it is only have a very low brightness. So I begin to wait because I saw that actually installer is still running. Finally, Mas OS was installed and after that I change brightness using keyboard (it didn't worked while installation). Now all is ok. I also tried to reboot and system loaded correctly.
I hope this will help. Unfortunatelly Apple support was unable to help me by a phone call.
Have a nice day! -
IMac mid-2011 randomly shuts down.
Hello,
My iMac was fine until yesterday. It all of a sudden started randomly shutting down. It looks like a power loss. As if i just pulled the power out of the wall outlet.
After it shuts down, the fans start up again but the screen does not come on. (so it's just the fans blowing) I have to "force shutdown" it from this state by holding the power button in order for the computer to start up again.
Things I have already done:
1. Reset PRAM
2. Reset SMC (by unplugging it for an hour)
3. Run disk utility, fix the disk permissions etc.
4. Run the extended apple hardware check. (all checks out fine.)
5. remove my Kensington RAM (leaving just the samsung ram in there)
6. Remove the samsung RAM (leaving just the Kensington ram in there)
7. Use another wall outlet, does not change anything.
8. I ran a program called memTest to check the RAM. It all checks out fine.
The RAM that i have bought has been in there for at least a year... So I don't think that that is the problem. It was the specially for iMac RAM. So it's not just some random RAM.
I have unplugged all external peripherals. Still does the same thing. If I look into the folder where kernel logs are saved there are none that match the times of shutdown. (also none close to it)
My model is the:
21.5 inch 2.7 GHz Intel i5 with Radeon HD6770M graphics card.
As it's a pretty old pc i no longer have warranty or anything like it...The machine is as clean as it can be. I even cleaned out the RAM ports (while replacing the RAM) Of course I did not check INSIDE the computer, but there is no way to get in without voiding warranty as far as I know. The environment is just regular room. Normal humidity, normal everything.
As for how old. Its the Mid-2011 21.5 inch model bought in october 2011-ish.
I have some new interesting findings. I reset the PRAM for the gazillionth time and the temperature sensors were back. So everything seemed ok again. The weird thing is though... It booted once with the PRAM messed up (fans blowing on max) and I decided to leave it that way to see if it was doing anything. It stayed on for an hour. Then I decided to turn it off and reset the PRAM. After the reset the problem was back. Within 5 minutes of booting it shut down again.
I'm really baffled by this. The temperature sensors all check out normal. (they're all 30-40 degrees) But the fact that it stayed on so long with messed up PRAM makes me believe the problem doesnt have anything to do with power supply or something like that... It might be in the PRAM itself. Would a reinstall of OS X fix anything? (I will be having a hard time getting my data off of the pc tho...)

Another iMac Randomly Shutting Down!!
Hey Everyone. I'm new to the forums, though i've always used them as a resource over the years to learn more or troubleshoot issues. Hopefully, now, someone can help me with mine personally.. :-/
I have an intel 2.8gH Aluminum iMac that I purchased fall of 2007. Only now, almost 2 years later is it suddenly (just started yesterday) turning off randomly. Everytime it will not allow me to turn it back on until a minute or so has passed. I have reset the SMC as well as the PRAM several times. This afternoon, it is now to the point where I cannot even keep it running long enough to download an app to up the fan speeds. Although, I don't think it is overheating in the first place.
I'm really hoping it is just the power supply, as I've seen that be the fix for SOME iMacs i've found at other online forums. Though, the upper corner of my iMac is not hot or smelling burnt out at all. I have found more than several online forums of people complaining about their iMacs randomly shutting down, and am praying it is not the logic board, as that is a $900+ fix.
please, someone give me insight to how i can check if its the power supply or something else? I use this iMac for recording all of my music, editing video, and (of course) playing WoW lol. Currently using my 1st gen macbook.I bought my iMac 20" in May 2006. I had been very impressed with it until one day I shut it down to move it to another room. I could not get it to turn back on. I had to leave it unplugged for a few hours. Since then it has started randomly shutting itself down, turning itself off and not starting up again until I unplug and leave it unplugged for a few hours. I had purchased the Apple Care? Extended Warranty, and the fault occurred during this three year period, though I failed to take the fault seriously and did not phone during the period. It was just after the three year warranty that I phoned Apple Care? about it and everyone I spoke to said they had not heard of this problem occurring. I wonder now, why the Apple Customer Service Team don't visit the discussions.apple.com where they will find quite a significant number of like problems occurring with the iMac sold in 2006.
My reason for paying the nearly triple price point for an Apple Computer was the quality of the build and my expectation that I would get far longer life out of my purchase. I don't like buying throw away products and I gladly save and wait longer to buy better quality products. Just as an example and point of reference. In 2000 I purchased a second hand Dell with 8GB HDD and 256Mb RAM. I paid $1000 for it and I gave it to my father when I got this iMac and he still has it running today. It has not had a single hardware issue in nine years. Good luck I suppose. However, after spending around $3000 on this iMac, and Apple now telling me the Logic Board is generically, non specifically 'failing', it goes against my pure desire for non disposable, throw away products to buy another Logic Board for AUS $1064. For one, I don't believe it has given me anywhere near the life that I expected from a product with such a high price point and solid reputation for quality, nor do I feel confidence in buying anything more 'Apple' after the dealings I have had with them over this problem. I am amazed that Apple would sell a 'failing' Computer to their customers and then expect that the customer will spend more money, considerably more, on a product that may be equally faulty and that they will not stand behind either.
