Helping a friend - her imac G5 got the blinking folder icon with question mark and grey screen and then wouldn't start. She had OS 10.4.11. I booted from install disk successfully- Disk Util said No repairs Necessary. Disk Warrior hung (never had that happen before). Performed Safe Boot. Multiple reboots were all successful.
But a few days later, it happened again. Then I did a clean install of 10.5 and all software updates. Restored her user folder from a clone I'd made before starting. All seemed well.
Now, the grey screen with folder question mark still occurs fairly often. If she restarts, she does get booted. (so far anyway)
My question: what do I need to do to resolve the grey screen with blinking folder icon on startup?
Additionally, the computer is slower than before. Does Leopard run slower on these machines than Tiger? (I'd already advised her to get more ram)

The blinking folder means just that, it can't find an OS to boot to. Tray zapping the PRAM and it wouldn't hurt to run Rember and if the RAM checks out, she might want to add some, 512 is really a minimum, and Leopard should really have at least 1GB.

The graphic card is damaged. You can't do anything more than taking your computer to an Apple Store or reseller and getting your graphic card replaced.
Sometimes, when the graphic card is damaged, operating systems can't start. That's caused because the drivers that make the graphic card work detect an error, telling the operating system that the graphic card is unusable, so the operating system can't start and it restarts. However, you can start in safe mode because operating systems use a basic driver in this startup mode

If running 10.7 or later hold down Command-R at Startup.
This should invoke recovery Mode.
Choose Disk Utility.
Select your Hard drive. Inspect the SMART Status in the lower right of the window for "Verified".
Select the Mac OS X Volume (originally Macintosh HD) click (Repair Disk)
If errors, run again until it comes clean or gets stuck.
Report any error messages.

I do not know if it's relevant or not, but I got a message on my ipad while on safari saying that my iPhone has a virus. I looked it up and it seems it might have just been an ad from the website I was on, but it happened around the same time YouTube stopped working.

Slideshow - Problems, showing blank screens, etc.

I'm experiencing lots of problems with Slideshows. Sometimes it's showing me blank screens with just the Color Wash, other times it's showing each alternate photo in my current selection, i.e. 1,3,5 and 7 of an 8 photo selection. It does work correctly on some occasions though.
I've got a simple single screen setup and I'm running version 1.0 of LR on Windows XP SP2.
Can't see any posts along these lines - is anyone else experiencing this?

When trying to launch (D)iagnostics, iMac shows gray screen with lightning bolt and USB icons

Mid 2011 iMac with 10.6.8
Occasionally its fans would rev up to the maximum and stay there until computer is restarted or put to sleep. But today the fans were blowing (albeit more moderately) from the start. Previous solutions would not help and iMac would even put itself to sleep after a minute or less.
Resetting SMC didn't help, so I've tried to launch AHT while pressing D during the boot. It worked in the past, but now it showed gray screen with these two icons jumping around. On top of that, I couldn't find find both OSX and Drivers discs (facepalm). Luckily I had Lion install disc, so with it I launched Disk Utility and verified the disk. HDD itself passed, but OS partition was declared unrepairable and in need of format.
I have Time Machine, so I happily formatted and started installing Lion. But during install, every few minutes or even less, computer would go to sleep again. Despite that install managed to continue, but when it got to "Downloading additional stuff" part, progress stopped and countdown even started to go UP minute by minute.
I figured that every time iMac went to sleep (because probably it thought it was overheating) download had to start again and it would never finish. So I cancelled and restored Snow Leopard system from Time Machine. After booting from HDD, I verified it and it passed. But Diagnostics still won't launch.
Any ideas?

Apple Hardware Test comes installed on the hard drive by default, but it's deleted when you erase the hard drive or you upgrade OS X.
In your case, you need the Mac OS X DVD. If you haven't got it, call Apple to get replacement discs > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
After getting the DVDs, insert the Mac OS X DVD and press D key while your Mac is starting to start Apple Hardware Test. Remember to run an extended test

I would love to say that a refresh worked for me however it did not.It takes about 30 Minutes total I was able to trace part of the issue to a Registry Key that was tagging the processor. Because my BIOS manages its own temp gauge and windows is trying to
build on in I had to turn the BIOS one off as well as for some reason I get better funtionality with Visualization off.
I am still dealing with a lag but I was able to get ride of the freeze that made the computer completely useless.

Recently i have connected to High Speed internet and Hp Asistant shown a Bios update for my System and i chose download. after that my Hp Pvillion G6 2005ax with AMD Quad Core is showing blank Screen and Caps Lock button Blinks Randomly and F12 Button also on. I read your post about the BIOS, and wanted to assist you! The blank screen and blinking of your Caps Lock, is the system trying to give you the error code for the issue your notebook is having. You can review the following document for further assistance, if needed:HP Notebook PCs - Computer Does Not Start and Emits an LED or Beep Code Please note the blinking sequence of your Caps Lock, and follow the instructions in the document above. From the information that you provided, it is possible that the blink code will be related to a BIOS error. You can always try performing a System Restore, to set the notebook back to a previous working point. You can also try checking this site for BIOS drivers. Once there, you can select your Operating System and click "Update", you should be able to access and download the BIOS drivers. If you downloaded the latest driver from that site, try uninstalling the driver and installing the previous version. You could try a reset and see if that fixes it : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
If it doesn't then you could try restoring to your last backup and/or resetting back to factory defaults. But if it's a hardware issue then you will need to contact Apple.
