My 24" iMac experience

I thought I'd post about my experience and thoughts on my new 24" iMac. I know when I'm thinking of buying something new, it's always helpful to read or talk to others who already have that equipment.
I have had the iMac for a week now and one word pretty much describes it for me .........AWESOME! Two feet of Mac (well, if you measure diagonally, LOL) is pretty amazing in itself. I have read about dead pixels and other display options, but I have not seen any of these problems in mine. The display is VERY bright and sharp. Did I mention, BIG?
I migrated all my files over from my prior computer, a dual 1.25 mirrored door. That went very smoothly and took about an hour to accomplish. The only error I got was that it said to re-install Missing Sync for Palm OS. No explanation given. I did re-install it and it functions just as it should.
As we all know, Adobe is not on board yet with Intel versions. I was able to launch Photoshop 7 and Adobe GoLive CS2 with no problems. Although they are supposed to run slower under Rosetta, I did not notice any appreciable speed slowdown. Photoshop Elements 4 launched once but subsequent tries only resulted in the icon bouncing in the Dock. So, I re-installed that and it is working fine now. I also use FileMaker Pro 8.5, Microsoft Office 2004, Toast 7, Reunion (genealogy software), Soho Notes, Launchbar, and FruitMenu.
In addition, I purchased Parallels Desktop for Mac, installed it and run Win 2000 in it. I have installed several programs into Windows (all genealogy) and it runs beautifully and with enough speed to satisfy anyone! I'm no expert, but it seems to run as fast as an equivalent PC would. I used VPC before and it was slower than slow, making any work done in it excruciatingly frustrating. Parallels runs seamlessly and is very fast. I connect to the internet from Windows and have access to all my USB peripherals including my printer. I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who needs to use Windows from their Mac. It was $79, but money well worth spending. I know Bootcamp is free, but because of the nature of my work, I need to be able to switch and copy things between my Mac and "the other." Besides, I already own a copy of Win2000, but not XP and did not want to fork over that much money. If you have a similar situation, Parallels works great!
The only other "problem" I have had with the new iMac is a buzz when I have an amplifier plugged into the audio-in port. (I am recording our old album collection to preserve the music and get it into iTunes and our iPod.) After posting on this forum, it was recommended to me to purchase a $15 ground loop isolator from RadioShack. I did and it fixed the problem! There is no buzz any other time.
Sound from the internal speakers, BTW, is very adequate. However, I still use my external speaker system ......gotta have that big base!
Anyway, I hope this will help anyone who may be considering this new iMac. Mine is the stock one but it has 2G of RAM. I use an external firewire hard drive for my backups.

My only concern about upgrading now rather than
waiting for MacWorld is how great the likelihood
they
will announce bumps in the speed or other aspects
of
the iMac hardware, or ILife 07.
Always a guessing a game. But there is a website and
I can't remember which one, sort of buying guide for
mac and they suggest when to buy or hold off on
certain models based on average updates. The 24" is
at the beginning of a cycle so it gets a high "buy
now" rating. Things like the Mac Book Pro and Mac
Books get a "don't buy now" as they are expecting
updates anytime. I'm sure its not foolproof, and I'm
sure we'll all wish we had the newer model when it
comes up. But now is the best time to buy this iMac.

  • 24" iMac experiences?

    Hi everyone,
I'm seriously considering splashing out and buying a 24" iMac, but I'm wary after reading a few horror stories on these forums. I understand that these people are probably (hopefully!) the minority, but I'm wary of spending all that money after buying a refurbished 20" iMac which didn't boot up properly (and has thus been returned to Apple).
The problems I've read are humming issues and temperature problems - are these isolated incidents or are many of you experiencing these?
    Thanks for your help,
    Dan
Returned faulty iMac Intel G5 Core Duo 2.0Ghz!   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I upgraded from a 12" G4 1.25GHz PowerBook (driving a 23" Cinema Display). And yes, the 24" iMac is amazing! The PowerBook next to it looks tiny and puny.
    Good:
    - silent
    - display brightness
    - speed
    - being able to play games (not that I don't have anything else to do)
    Lesser:
    - I loved to be able to have different Energy Saver settings on my PowerBook (makes total sense). However, due to the fact the iMac will go to sleep (even while I'm downloading data via one of the internets), it would make sense to have different settings to choose from.
    - mine has the 'brightness-reduction-hum' (I called Apple to put it in my file)
I went with the 2.16GHz model, but added another gig to 2 GB RAM, and the 7600GT card. Now that Apple gave us BTO, I figured I might as well use it and shell out the extra $.
    I'm very satisfied.

  • IMac failures

I have tried unsuccessfully to find an email address for Apple, where I can give critical feedback about my iMac experience and expect to have some response.  The only feedback channels make it clear there will be no response and I fear it disappears into a black hole.  So I'm posting this here in the hope that someone might offer a contact e-mail or reflect on my experience.
I bought a 21.5" iMac in 2010.  Just after the end of the Applecare agreement, the DVD drive failed and had to be replaced at my expense.  Last year the screen went blank, other than grey pixellated stripes and the faint log-in icon.  Assessment by our local computer repair shop (not an official Apple retailer/repairer, but experienced in dealing with Apple issues) suggested that the graphics card (Nvidia G-force, I think) had failed, probably with the solder connections having melted as this was a problem that had been a common issue with my model/age of Mac.  Indeed, they thought that Apple had repaired this fault free within a certain period of purchase.  They suggested the most economical way of repairing this was a specialist in London, with a three month guarantee.  I took this option and 3 months and 2 weeks after the return, the same fault occurred again.
I decided enough was enough and have bought a new iMac....albeit with some annoyance and without total confidence.
Am I just unlucky?  Am I unreasonable to think this level of component failure is unacceptable?  Apple charges a significant premium for its products (its record profits recently announced are unsurprising).  Given the quality of build and design that they presumably regard as justifying this, is a 4.5 year lifespan for an iMac the norm?  My use is purely domestic and way below the use that many Macs must experience.

Yes Apple had a succession of badly designed iMacs. The white 24" iMacs were a particular problem. I had two fail with identical problems.
I also had problems with the first 24" Aluminium iMac with failed network card and power board. I insisted Apple replace it after the second repair still did not fix it.
The hard drive failed in my 27" iMac 30 days after I bought it. I was particularly upset because when I researched it, it was a known problem, but Apple did not warn me and I lost a fair amount of work.
In my long experience Macs suffer from design failures due to Apple trying to slim down the design too much, causing overheating, or because of some other unusual and unconventional technology which proves more experimental than practical. Some of their components, at least the cases, are better built and better material but otherwise Macs are not any more reliable than modern PCs which if bought from major suppliers are very durable.
Apple works hard at the myth of superiority to justify their higher prices, it is hard to get them to even talk about problems, they will just go silent unless it flares up into a major media story.
As compensation the service and support from AppleStores is good and the unified hardware/software leads to less finger pointing when you have a problem, Apple has to own the problem and fix it if it is under warranty. I have had entire units replaced if I made a clear case for it, without too much fuss.

  • Problem: Sharing Folders with iMac and winXP

We have been running a small workgroup sharing so far two winxp machines over a wifi-modem-router-switch. The two pc share folders without problem.
I have now proudly made the switch over to using Apple iMac. Whilst the iMac experience is fantastic, getting to share the iMac with the rest of the winXP is turning into a nightmare.
I have spent 45 minutes with the tech support team of my ISP router supplier (ISP:Club-Internet - Router :AH4021/Tecom AH4222)
Every check & settings turned out to be fine, but they were unable to diagnose the problem.
I spent 3 sessions and over 1 hour (without counting time waiting over the phone) with the Apple support team, and whilst they were very friendly, they were unable to diagnose the problem.
I cannot ping the iMac from the xp machine, but I am told there is hope though, as i can ping ok my xp machine from iMac.
    All firewalls have been removed.
File n window sharing set on all machines.
DHCP manually setup assigning fix IP/DNS etc..
Same username on all machines, with unique machine name
Is there anybody who could help? Help!

Just hanged up from Apple tech support France, and this time, spoke to another friendly AND helpful support assistant named Simon.
Simon got me straight into the Finder>Go>Connect to Server
Type into your Server Address window : smb://and here your pc ip address you want to get to
    example: smb://192.168.1.2
Hit Enter key, and your pc should appear
    Thank you Simon!
Also, watch out for port 80 being hugged by apps like Skype...it might interfer
AND any port being specified into your NAT configuration in your router might confused the search.
    Voila!

  • Wi-Fi problem on iMac intel running 10.7.4

Both me and my partner have iMacs and also a MacBook Pro; no issues whatosever with the laptop running same OS but the iMacs experience almost daily problems with the wi-fi connection and it is becoming really upsetting havin to turn on and off airport to make things work again....anybody else with the same issue? Any clues? Many thanks! ;-)

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

  • Why can't my new iMac find my windows laptop?

Followed all the instructions but cannot get a connection between new iMac and a similar spec Windows 7 laptop.  Not a good start to my Imac experience but I'll blame the other machine for the moment.

Both or at least one of them should be allowed to be shared. On your mac, go into System Preferences > Sharing and see if File Sharing (at least this one) is checked.
Which instructions is a good question, of course. Instructions to what? The router, the PC, the iMac?

  • IMac crashes when powering off external Thunderbolt drive

    Hi,
I have an external LaCie d2 USB 3.0 drive that is connect to my iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011, 3,1 GHz Intel Core i5, 12 GB RAM) through Thunderbolt. Whenever I power off the drive by pushing the power button (yes I did verify: all partitions have been ejected correctly before in the Finder and verified in Disk Utility), the iMac crashes. It starts up again, displays a screen stating the computer was not shut down properly and then immediately restarts. After that it boots up fine.
This started occurring after having installed 10.10.2 Beta. I did file a report with Apple. As this was beta software I decided to completely reinstall the iMac from scratch (a complete fresh install, just imported my documents manually after) and everything was working fine again (10.10.1). Boom, after having updated 10.10.2 yesterday the problem is back.
I did manage to find a workaround: when I connect the drive through a UBS cable it works fine. Conclusion: this seems to be caused by a Thunderbolt related update in 10.10.2.
Question: is any one else with an external Thunderbolt drive experiencing this and has perhaps found a fix?
    Thanks,
    Kurt

    - iMac (27’’ mid-2011), Thunderbolt firmware version 25,1 and Port Micro firmware version 2.1.3 (as seen in System Information)
    - OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
Unmounting LaCie d2 disk partitions is OK: the drive spins down and goes to sleep without problem. However when I take the power off (with the small switch at the rear of the unit), the iMac experiences a kernel panic.
This issue did not occur with Yosemite 10.10.1, and does not occur either with another LaCie drive (8TB LaCie 2big Thunderbolt drive, model # 9000246). So the issue is specific to OS X 10.10.2, and only certain models of drive(s).
We need a fix from Apple - the Operating System should be rock-solid in any circumstances.
Curiously, OS X does not write a kernel panic log with every occurrence. It’s only after the 3rd or 4th kernel panic that it would actually produce this log:

  • How's Your New Intel iMac?

I've had my Intel iMac for a mere 12 days (upgraded from a 700 MHz G3 iBook). I bought the original "bondi blue" iMac when it debuted in 1998. My new iMac screams with speed, and the display is big, bright and beautiful.
Is anyone else having the same perfectly blissful iMac experience?

Glad to see there's a sizable crew pleased w/ their
    machines!
Ditto! I just thought I'd put it "out there." Seems like all I read in Discussions are problems I've never experienced with any of my Apple products. I'm on my 7th Mac and have two iPods. Not a single problem.
I'm loving my Intel iMac. I may have sold a couple of PC friends on Apple. They both asked where the hard drive is and couldn't believe it was inside the slim iMac display.
iMac is the quietest machine I've ever used and stays relatively cool compared to other Macs I've had. I haven't yet gotten into Front Row, but what I've seen so far looks pretty awesome. My Office 2001 runs really fast under Rosetta, and Safari, iTunes are snappier than ever.
Great machine! Thanks, everyone, for your input.

  • IMac rattling sound

    Hello people!
I really hope someone can help me out here.
My imac is rattling! I've had a loud fan noise coming from my imac before, but back then it was my hdd.
That was, after crashing and dying on me, replaced.
Now i have a same sort of noise coming out of my imac. This time i opened it again, thinking it was my hdd or something.
It was not, it's actually the fan thats behind the stand of the imac. I tried googling this but no one mentions it.
If you open up your imac, it's very hard to reach this fan, its behind the logic board(?) and almost all other components.
    Here is an image:
It seems to be from there. It's (usually) extra loud when i'm rebooting or waking it up from sleeping mode.
It's less noisy under windows in bootcamp (odd?). In osx you need to play loud music to cancel out the rattling.
Still its varries in loudness but it does not seem to relate to intensive use or no use at all. Quite random.
Any tips? Really hope someone had this before and knows a way to fix it. It destroys my serene imac experience, especially cause i've been running windows lately.. Blasphemy!!
I recored the sound but it does not let me add it to the post.I'll look into that if someone wants to hear it.
    Thanks in advance!
    Greets

On my 2006 I shutdown and vacuum out the air intakes (bottom grill work and HD vent behind the stand) a couple of times a year. I feel that vacuuming is better than blowing because it pulls the dust bunny's out instead of blowing them deeper into iMac and fans.
Sounds like one of three things:
    1. The intake and fan are choked with dust.
    2. A piece of tape or something has come loose.
    3. The fan is going bad.
    I would,
First give all the air intakes a vigorous vacuuming, then perhaps follow up by giving the HD air intake a good blowing out with canned or dry compressed air.
Second slowly ramp up the HD fan speed using smcFanControl 2.2.2 released. It's a little risky, but should help you to judge the overall condition of the fan.
Third dig out the Fan and either clean or replace it.

  • New to apple-Do you all have anything good to say about your macs?

Wanting to expand from our love of the ios iphones and ipads to the world of macintosh macbook pros and imacs but as I read on these forums it makes me want to stay away due to all the problems.
I thought apple was famous and expensive for its engineering, design and quality. Has anyone got a Mac that worked or wasnt defunk for one reason or another? Convince me to not run back to my Sony Vaio. I thought apple was supposed to be better than pc? Please tell me it is because I want to get a macbook pro and an imac and fully get intot he apple ecosystem, but all this b**ching makes me think its just as bad as windows.

    ata,
I just wanted to chime in and give my iMac experience.
    1. I was on pc's for 13 years. Got my first, and currently only, iMac in April of 06 and haven't looked back
    2. Four years later, it still runs like a champ and no hard ware failure.
    3. Less system resources taken up by anti-virus apps and other security apps so more resources are available for the work I want to do.
    4. No mystery files or apps left on my desktop after internet browsing.
Now, was it a night and day difference in my workflow? No. Here's why: The apps that I use pretty much have the same layout and functionality as they did on my PC. So, to edit a photo or create an animation involved the same steps as before.
During my PC days, I would reformat my harddrive at least twice a year if not more to get the PC to run at it's original optimal speeds...not necessary with the iMac. Just download Onyx (backup first!) and run the cleaning apps. That's it. No, Onyx has never deleted anything I wanted to keep, backing up is just a precaution. I'm not saying you even have to use Onyx, I'm just a little obsessive about file build up...
A lot of PC vendors like to install their own bloatware which is why some pc users will reformat and reinstall the OS right after they bring the unit home. Again, mac doesn't do this.
I know PC users that have just purchased a new unit which does not include the backup cd's for the original hardware...that doesn't make sense to me. My mac came with one install disk that included ALL the software that was installed on the machine at the time of purchase.
I think you'll be happy with the mac.

  • Mouse Scroll Issues

I've had my iMac since June and have had trouble with the mouse. The "scroll up" feature doesn't work intermittently. I'm on my second mouse now. The scroll up feature on the first one just totally stopped working after 2 months. It just started on my second one the other day.
It's the wireless mouse. Any ideas?

I had intermittent scrolling problems with my wireless mighty mouse, but never did confirm it was a mouse problem, as opposed to software or EMF. I did follow Apple's instructions for cleaning the scoll ball - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302417 - but don't know that it had an effect.
Finally gave up and switched to M$ wireless laser mouse 8000 and have been very happy. It's a full four button programmable mouse, unlike MM. I like the ergonomics far better than MM and it works with the native bluetooth in my Al iMac and iBook G4. I couldn't find anywhere in the M$ kingdom that the mouse would work with Mac, but it did after installing the drivers. It comes with a bluetooth dongle, which I didn't need, so sold it for more than I paid for the 8000 mouse.
My iMac experience took a turn for the better after switching to the 8000.

    Yuh think ! ? !
That was 75% of the reason. It was waaaaay overpriced.
The ports being on the bottom, where no one could get at them, was another big reason it was not accepted by the public.
I am among those who have been pushing for a desktop system with a mini-like footprint, but imac-like performance -- but I've been advocating this since before the Mini existed.
One idea I put forward in my Mac User Group's newsletter was for a machine just slightly taller than a mini that docks into a cinema display-type monitor. This would allow apple to sell them together for an imac experience, or separately.
Regardless of whether or not they did the docking thing, this is the computer system that could really bring about great Mac acceptance in the corporate world. But of course Apple ignores that space and seem deaf to the needs of industry.

  • IPhone 5 green glow at bottom of screen when 'woken up'

Got my black 16GB iPhone 5 from phones4u on the 17th November 2012. 2 weeks after I had it, I noticed a green glow appear at the bottom of the screen when I pressed one of the buttons to wake it up. This only happened when the phone had been locked for 5 minutes or more. Gradually, it started happening after every time I woke the phone up. I put up with it as I didn't think I'd be able to get it repaired/replaced. On the 20th December, the lock button on top of the phone started to not work on the right hand side, only worked if I pressed the left side of the button. Enough was enough and I made an appointment with a genius at my nearest apple store (Birmingham). I went to my appointment on the 5th January. The genius was really helpful and he replaced my phone there and then. Yesterday I started to notice a slight green glow around the bottom of the screen when it has been 'sleeping' for around 10 minutes. I have had this new phone less than a week and I am pretty hacked off. I don't know whether to go back and explain the problem and how angry I am, as I never had this trouble with my iPhone 4! It's not affecting use of the phone but it's an annoying trait considering the cost of it!
    Is anyone else experiencing this?

i got my 15" i7 HR glossy macbook pro yesterday, just like Webmaestro, i noticed the EXACT screen back-light bleeding behavior on my machine during it's first boot up.
however, beside this back-light bleeding, the screen is beautiful, very bright & crispy color, no yellow tinge , no dead or stuck pixels.
been going through several 27" yellow iMac nightmares in the past few months. right now i am struggling and worry if i'd get a replacement macbook pro which would come up with something even worst than what i am having now.
did some researches on the internet and found this :
    http://www.anandtech.com/Gallery/Album/649#
those images also show some subtle backlight bleeding at the bottom of the 2010 macbook pro screens which makes me think that there's actually no perfect apple laptop screen that ever exist. (…i got a 5 years old dell and a 3 years old sony laptop both are with the same resolution and their screen has zero backlight bleeding, very even back light illumination. )
i am wondering if it is just me being too picky for a perfect apple screen that will never exist?
the apple stores lighting here in ginza is just too bright that i could not check and see if there's any backlight bleeding on those macbook pros on display. Genius are nice but i know what exactly they are going to tell me if i ever ask them if my machine's screen is normal.
maybe there are many many other 2010 macbook pro owners who got the same backlight bleeding screens but they just don't ever care about that much?
if ALL macbook pro has this kind of "subtle" backlight bleeding behavior. i am cool with my machine; but if this problem belongs to the apple QC department, i am not sure if i want to get myself into another never ending replacement/return loop again after the very bad 27"imac experience.
here's the data of my screen: 9CB6, LTN154MT07.
thank you for reading, just wanna share some thoughts…
    cheers.

  • Gradient / Highlight / Glow at Bottom of Screen (15" i7)

I've already spoken with an Apple rep about this, and have an appt. to take my 15" i7 into the nearest store this weekend. However, I wanted to toss this out there and see if anyone else has seen this issue on their 2010 MBP. I'll describe what I'm seeing as best I can.
This issue is most obvious when a solid color is chosen for the desktop (or I have a large canvas in Photoshop with a solid color).
At the bottom of the screen, I have what I can only describe as a "glow" emanating upward about an inch. Imagine it as a faint gradient/highlight. I noticed it on my first-ever boot up, so I'm suspecting something naughty happened during its trip from China (probably had another box setting on top of it, or it got tossed around by the carriers).
The rest of the screen is fine, but at the bottom I have this odd glow... as if a little light is being cast up onto my screen. Viewing angle doesn't get rid of it either, just alters its brightness, as would be expected.
