My 24" iMac is behaving really strange. Very unresponsive.

It takes forever to come up and then is very, very slow to respond to any command on screen. It's making an odd clicking noise as well. I ran Disk Warrior and it said it couldn't fix it. Ideas? Reinstall OS?

It's making an odd clicking noise as well.
Sounds like you hard drive is failing.  Go to this page and see if any of the sounds there match yours.
Run Disk Utility to see if it can repair your drive.  Boot from your installer dvd that run DU from there.
If it is indeed failing make sure you back up that drive ASAP.  Use a backup utility like Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to clone your drive to a make a bootable backup.

  • Cfqueryparam behaving really strange

    Hi!
    I have the following scenario.
    CFMX 7.0
    MS SQL 2005
    Col1 and Col3 are nvarchar and Col 2 is an int
    Working sql: (returns all rows matching clause)
    SELECT * FROM table WHERE col1 = <cfqueryparam
    cfsqltype="cf_sql_varchar" value="#var1#"> AND col2 =
    <cfqueryparam cfsqltype="cf_sql_integer" value="#var2#"> AND
    col3 = <cfqueryparam cfsqltype="cf_sql_varchar"
    value="staticvalue">
    Also working sql (returns all rows matching clause)
    SELECT * FROM table WHERE 1=1 AND col1 = <cfqueryparam
    cfsqltype="cf_sql_varchar" value="#var1#"> AND col2 =
    <cfqueryparam cfsqltype="cf_sql_integer" value="#var2#"> AND
    col3 = 'staticvalue'
    Not working sql (returns only one row)
    SELECT * FROM table WHERE col1 = <cfqueryparam
    cfsqltype="cf_sql_varchar" value="#var1#"> AND col2 =
    <cfqueryparam cfsqltype="cf_sql_integer" value="#var2#"> AND
    col3 = 'staticvalue'
    As you can see, using cfqueryparam with the static value
    makes query #1 work and adding 1=1 in the where clause makes query
    #2 work. But I find it very, very strange that query #3 shouldn't
    work - and whats even more strange is that it somehow at least
    returns one row...
    Has anyone experienced any of this behaviour?
    Regards,
    Johan

    how many rows does this return:
    SELECT *
    FROM table
    WHERE
    col1 = <cfqueryparam cfsqltype="cf_sql_varchar"

  • IMac 24" behaving really weard!

    This is odd.
    We've had this iMac for about 4 years.
    It just started flickering the display whenever we start it up (it no longer boots completely).
    I can never boot into the OS.
    I stuck in the original install disk, press and hold the C key to boot into the DVD.
    It accesses the DVD drive for awhile but then the screen goes blank. After a few tries it then succeeds in booting into the DVD.
    I completely erased the HD and then re-installed the OS (to Snow Leopard).
    After the install, it seemed to work for a few hours and then began exhibiting the same weard behavior of flickering display again.
    I wonder if the HD is begining to die.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    -Mike

    I would STRONGLY recommend running Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode, this test will take 30-60 minutes. If no errors show up then run the test another 2-3x to ensure there are no errors. If you get any error codes then take the machine to an Apple Store or AASP along with the codes. If you cannot get AHT to run then just the machine in for a repair estimate.

  • Macbook Pro behaving extremely strangely

    Today I took delivery of a new 11 inch Macbook Air. Started migrating over wi-fi from my 2009 Macbook Pro and obviously it was taking forever so I stopped it after a few hours. Now doing a backup restore to the Macbook Air from Time Capsule which seems to be going much quicker. However, my Macbook Pro has now started behaving really strangely. Particularly, it won't recognise clicks on my magic mouse and I have to press hard on the trackpad for it to recognise clicks have tried monekying about with trackpad and magic mouse setting but to no avail.
    When it started doing this, if I restarted the computer it would work fine for about a minute and then start doing this. Now it's just doing this. Also it seemed to have logged me out of my home network but now logged back in. It's running Lion by the way and has been a little glitchy since installing that anyway but so far nothing like this. Is it connected to the aborted migration or the currently restoring Macbook Air perhaps? Both computers would be having the same user account signed (that's ok right)? Please can someone help!

    Sorry to keep bumping this but keep finding new things. Ok, so if I restart my Macbook Pro everything works fine, mouse clicks are registered no problem UNTIL I touch the trackpad or close the lid and reopen. If I touch the trackpad it reverts to clicks not registering on the mouse and the trackpad continues to behave in this screwy way. Same thing for closing the lid and putting to sleep. Please, does anyone have any thoughts. Going to take it to the geniuses tomorrow anyway but if anyone has any thoughts it'd really be appreciated!

  • I just jazzed up my 2 Ghz iMac with 10.6.8, and 4 gigs of memory. I'm VERY happy with the results (fast!), but now I have a thin yellow line way over on the right side of the screen, which goes from top to bottom. This is really strange! Any input?

    I'm VERY happy with the results (fast!). However, the really strange thing is this - there is now a thin yellow line, way over on the right side of the screen, which goes from top to bottom, and stays there no matter where I go or what I do. I've never seen anything like this! It was not there before I did the upgrades. Anyone out there ever heard of such a preposterous thing ~ or have any ideas on how to get rid of it?

    Hello Mark,
    It's going to mean a lot of reading but you should study the 'More like this' legend to your post's immediate right.  >>>>>>>>   plus some of the links within each.
    The problem is well explored with much guidance on what to do and where to go.

  • A really strange issue in Stratus

    Hi,
    I'm facing a very strange issue in Stratus. Let me explain:
    I have two mac machines (i.e. One is Mac and other is MacPro). Both are in the same network. When Mac connects with MacPro, audio, video, text conversation goes really well but when MacPro connects with Mac, I see audio, video but MacPro can't send text messages to Mac but Mac can send text messages to MaPro. It's really strange I know but I'm stuck in that issue. Please help me out.
    Thanks

    Remember that the format you should use is:
    <share name>\<folder>
    and not
    \tempforXI\sender
    Where share name is in your case tempforXI.

  • Really strange network issue that is specific to OS X 10.6.8

    Really strange network issue that is specific to OS X 10.6.8 on both 2 iMacs and an older intel Mac Pro.
    Any system running 10.6.8 is achieving on average 15 –20 mb a sec transfer rates regardless of drive speeds, cables, network activity etc.. I've spent some time removing any cable , drive speed, router issues to the point where one machine dual boots into both 10.6.8 and 10.6.5
    The 10.6.5 system has network speeds of 60mb – 80mb p/sec transfer rates.
    Our older 10.5.8 PPC mac gets 80mb and my 2011 Macbook Pro 10.7.2 hits 60mb – 80mb consistently as well.
    Any idea what the cause is?
    Cheers

    Since your other Mac running 10.5.8 is not affected, you know that your AirPort router is functioning correctly.
    What changed on your Mac? This seems like a post for either the Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard support area, or the support area for your model of Mac.
    We normally handle questions about the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule in this area, but you can certainly wait to see if you receive a response here.

  • My iMac is getting really slow.  It used to boot in about 30 seconds, now it's over 3 minutes.  I am thinking I may backup photo's Videos and such and format the hard drives and re-install OSX.  Any thoughts on this?

    This computer used to boot up in about 30 seconds, now it's minutes, programs are starting to freeze, or take a long time to boot.  I suspect it's bits and fragments from programs that I have used and deleted over the years, but are still floating around inside my iMac.  I really don't want to re-format and re-install OSX  but the lack of performance is finally starting to irritate me.  (Haveing switched from windows in 2009, I can tell you, I used to reformat and re-install windows about every 3 months because I liked that fresh fast boot up feel.)  Any advice is welcome.  Here's a printout from a program that lists everything using my system.
    Thanks.

    In addition to Mike's suggestions,  you only have 4GB of RAM and Mavericks does use more RAM than other versions. You may also want to look at the apps that startup on login and the possiblity of upgrading RAM.

    My macbook pro is running very slow with some strange mouse and window movements. The trackpad is very unresponsive and when responding the cursor moves on its own and/or very erratically. When on safari the window suddenly zooms in or highlights words and looks them up via dictionary. I currently have a wireless mouse connected and I am still having the same problems.
    I fee like I may have a virus or my laptop is perhaps being accessed remotely. All of the sharing options are unchecked.
    HELP PLEASE
    Very worried!!

    Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
         Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
         COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
         after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
         Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
         Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

    Thanks

    Where do you see the default birthday showing as Nov. 30? If you can explain that, I can probably modify the below script to do that clean up.
    In response to the original problem:
    I'm not sure why I missed the original reply, but here is an Applescript that will change all the years of any selected contacts to 1604 (default for no year).
    tell application "Contacts"
              set thePeople to selection
              repeat with aPerson in thePeople
                        set theDate to birth date of aPerson
                        if theDate is not missing value then
                                  set the year of theDate to 1604
                                  set birth date of aPerson to theDate
                        end if
              end repeat
    end tell
    copy and paste it into a new Applescript Editor document. Select all the contacts you want to change (in Contacts), then run this script by clicking on the green Run button in Applescript Editor.

    Hi...
    My name is Turgay and have been using computer since 1982... 2 years ago, because of my friend's advice, i bought an iMac... It was the first Mac that i use... Till that, i was using normal PC's...
    I bought an 24" iMac on July 2009 and started to use... I realized that i spent my 27 years for using (fixing) computers. Because the Mac was perfect. After iMac, i was really fine with my computer... But after something, that doesn't bother me, happened. The screen started to get cloudy and black... And it increased. Because of this i took my iMac to your authorised distributor http://www.bilkom.com.tr...
    They changed my screen but in 2 months it happened 3 times and i wanted them to change my iMac with new one, under customer laws... In our country, the device must be changed with new one if the same problem occurs in 3 months. Because i know the customer satisfaction of Apple, i didn' worry about it but Bilkom refused my will... I spoke with them for 2 months but nothing happened, they just told me, it' not our problem.
    Because of this speech, i sued them on June 2011... Last week, i won the case but just for the return of invoince... It costs 3.200 Turkish Liras (1.800$) and there's no 24" iMac unused... Bilkom again refused to give me an iMac... I thought that Apple's customer satisfaction can't be like this... I didn't write anything to Apple till now but if i can't get an iMac, i must return to normal PC after 2 years... And i don't want that... I offered an iMac 27" with core i7... No matter Bilkom accepts or not, they don't care of me... I'm a customer, they should do... I've never seen such a like company. I hope the real Apple will help my problem and save me from Bilkom...
    Waiting for your reply... Thanks and regards...

    Unfortunately, you are not communicating with Apple here - we are all other users volunteering our time to help with technical problems.
    Here is a list of Apple contacts; there is no email address  - you will need to write a letter to their corporate headquarters or call them:

    Although, it appears that your problem is with a third party store and that you have won in court - did you get your money back? 24" iMacs have not been made since 2009 or 2010. Now there are 21" and 27" iMacs.

  • LaserJet 1320 not being recognized, really strange

    Hello all,
    I'm having a really strange problem that I think is mostly my fault. I just recieved a LaserJet 1320, and when I first hooked it up everything worked fine.
    However, I couldn't figure out how to do duplex printing, so I installed HP's Toolbox software. A big mistake, and I ended up having to manually delete all of the file it put in /Library.
    Anyhow, now my Mac won't recognize the printer at all. Print Setup Utilities shows nothing. I've reinstalled the HP PPDs from my Tiger CD, still nothing.
    The Printer works (Tested on an old Linux Box) and the USB ports on my Mac work, but still I can't get the printer to be recognized.
    *pulls out hair*
    Any help would be welcomed.
    Thanks,
    Clark

    I had the same problem with a friends computer.
    She had put the CD in also.
    I nearly lost the will to live trying to fix it so I plugged it into my powerbook to see if the printer was OK. I could print perfectly.
    I then copied the printer from username/Library/Printers/ folder and then dropped in into her printers folder. It worked brilliantly. All you need is another mac that has never been near an HP install CD.
