My 24" iMac takes 6 rimes longer to boot than my 20"

I have an early 25" iMac, 10.5.2 2.16, 2GB, 500HD. I takes nearly 6 minutes to boot up. I also have an older 20" iMac 10.5.2 2.0, 1GB, 250K with almost exactly same software, etc that boots in less than a minute. Why is the newer model so slow? I do have the 24" connected to 500GB USB for Time Machine.

Hi,
I'm not sure this will help but it's worth a try - leave your 24" on overnight go to the "Energy Saver" in Preference set the computer to "Never" Sleep and un-check the box at the bottom to keep the hard drive active. It's OK to put the "Display" to sleep. In the wee hours of the morning the Mac will run certain maintenance programs automatically that may help out your slow boot up. I have a 24"it boots from a cold start in about 30 seconds with several fire wire drives cascaded to the FW 800 port. Maybe you have tried this approach just thought I'd chime in.
Hope it helps,
Steve
Good advice Steve (and the Ancients).
Another option I have used in the past to handle system maintenance is MacJanitor, but it is not made specifically for Intel Macs, and can be buggy. I have found this alternative though, you may want to check it out rather than leave your iMac on 24hrs a day:

the site also has this:

Let us know how it goes.

  • IMAC takes very long to boot and and shut down.

My iMAC 21" takes very long (15-20 mts) to boot up and become responsive. It also takes More than 5 mts to shut down. The HW test and disk utility do not report any issue. I have Erased the disk and re-installed OS X 10.9.2 two times. On the second re-install, I deliberately did not restore the backup from the time machine. It works well after it settles down. I changed the mouse and have cheked the Apple wireless keyboard.
The problems began after the last security update to the best of my recollection. Since there does not appear to be any HW issue and I have re-installed the software, I am unable to determine what else I can do to resolve the issue.

Hello. Thank you for responding to my message.
I have shut down the system at 8.28am local time (took about 2 mts which is not bad). I then restarted and it took more than 10 mts to reach the login prompt. After login, it took several more minutes until all the icons were displayed at the bottom. After clicking on Safari and reaching the top hits pages also took an unresonable amount of time considering it is a quad core MAC and I am on a fibre internet connection. (Other computers at home respond quickly). I have to add that I am experiencing intermittent performane issues even when the MAC settles down after the long startup time. i.e. get to see the coloured spinning wheel several times.
I have tried my best to cut down the log size but found many unique lines as the boot took so long. So, apologies for the length of the log. The System diagnostics section in the Console app is blank with no reports at all.

  • Does Mac OS X in 64 bits takes longer to boot than in 32 bits?

Hello, Does Mac OS X 10.6.3 in 64 bits mode takes longer to boot than in 32 bits mode?. If I boot Mac OS X in my MacBook Pro 5.1 in 64 bits mode it takes 51.3 sec, and if I boot it in 32 bits mode it takes 33.1 sec. I just want to know if this is normal or not. And in case this is normal I would appreciate it a lot if someone could explain me why it takes longer to boot in 64 bits mode than in 32 bits mode.
Thank you a lot for any help that you could give me

Just the opposite for me. My early 2008 Mac Pro definitely boots (and runs) faster in 64 bit mode. As Barry mentioned though, you may not want to do this.
The main rule is kernel extensions. If you have anything that needs to load on boot that is only 32 bit (mouse, keyboard, scanner or other type of driver/software), then you must boot in 32 bit mode or they won't load.
As long as all of your boot software is 64 bit compatible, then booting 64 bit is fine. 32 bit software you launch after the OS is up and running will still run as 32 bit with the OS in 64 bit mode.

  • Why does Preview takes so long to boot up?

My Preview appliation on Lion takes very long to boot up.  Also, why does the program quit once I close it?  I have to start the program up each time I want to view a PDF.  Acts like windows!!

The first thing to do is startup up in Safe Mode and see if the machine behaves acceptably.  There is a second knowldege base article that may help give further guidance.

  • MAcbook takes too long to boot

From one day to another our macbook takes too long to boot. The problem is since we push the power button until the first grey apple shows up, it can take up to 30 seconds. Since the apple shows up it boot in a few seconds. All the process up to 1.20 minutes.

Also... once you are in OS X, go to System Preferences and Startup Disk. Make sure your OS X volume is selected. Sometimes this can change causing your system to look for another startup disk... and it needs to "time out" before it moves on to the next. This is most common after removing a BootCamp installation of Windows... but can happen for any number of reasons.

  • 'Processing Event...' iMac takes ages, MacBook Pro less than 1 sec! What?

I have an iMac and MacBook Pro of similar spec and vintage (2-3 years old) and use iMovie daily for work - editing skydiving footage. We need videos done FAST, and herein lies the problem..
When importing new footage from the cameras (ContourHD) and then opening iMovie, the iMac takes a long time 'Processing Event' while doing exactly the same action with the MacBook Pro 'Processing Event' either takes a split second or doesn't even happen, iMovie just opens with the new Event just sitting there - no processing required.
What is going on! It has been like this in all the versions of iMovie. We also have a new 27" iMac and this behaves like the other iMac, ie, takes a while (several minutes to Process Event).
Is there something that we have missed in Preferences in the iMac's? I cannot find any difference between the computers, in fact the MacBook Pro was rebuilt in the image of one of the iMac's from it's Time Machine backup. Also the Pro has half the RAM of the iMacs.
    Any ideas?

Yes on the iMac, no on the Pro. Uninstalled it off the iMac - no difference.
I might point out that the Pro sometimes does take a while 'creating thumbnails - processing event' so might investigate this further. It might be that the videos were first downloaded onto the iMac where the thumbnails were created then copied to the Pro afterwards for further editing. I'll check it out.

  • IMac takes a long time to boot up after login

I have a lab of about 23 computers, most all of them are running OS X 10.5.8. I have a couple running 10.6.7. DHCP server was down this morning. I rebooted the server, and still the computers won't let students login. I couldn't even login as root or admin accounts.
Finally after about 30 minutes, students could login but it takes up to 10 minutes for them to get to the desktop. All are running wired, not wireless.
These are iMac Intel based, Core duo desktops.
DHCP server is running now, you can remote in as well as ping it. I also rebooted the Xserve.
Any ideas on why they take so long to log in?
As far as I know, no updates were pushed out on Friday or of last week some time.
    Any help would be great.
    Thank you!

I suspect the HD has crashed. Locate the original disc 2 that shipped with the computer and run Apple's Hardware Test in extended mode 2-3 times. If it reports errors take it in for service, if you don't have the discs then take it in for service.

  • MacBook Pro takes too long to boot

I have a late-2013, 15" MacBook Pro with retina display.
It takes a half hour or more to boot if I reboot it after using it for any appreciable amount of time. Sometimes I can get it to boot faster if I boot it in safe mode, or if I interrupt it by powering off a few minutes into the boot process and then restarting it.
The computer hangs on the white screen with the Apple logo showing and the spinner spinning.
If I reboot it immediately after it finally boots up, it boots normally.
I've tried everything I can think of to diagnose and fix this problem. I uninstalled every bit of software I'm not using. I removed unneeded printers and other devices. I removed all my Login items except for DropBox and iTunes Helper.
I have no startup items (both /LibraryStartupItems and /System/Library/StartupItems are empty, and ~/Library/StartupItems does not exist).
Before I got the MacBook Pro I had a 2011 MacBook Air. I used the Time Machine backup from the Air to initialize the Pro. I never had any such problem with the Air. I also have a 2013 iMac, which has most of the same software installed on it as my MacBook Pro; the iMac exhibits no issues with booting or any other problems.
I've repeatedly repaired my disk and permissions. I do it every time I have to boot. It makes no difference.
At first I thought this was a minor issue I could live with, since I don't reboot my computer every day, but it's become increasingly annoying. On several occasions I've had the computer crash unexpectedly which meant I was out of business for half an hour while I tried to reboot it. Once this happened while I was giving a presentation to a group of people with a projector, which was extremely frustrating. In fact, compared to other Macs I own or have owned in the past, this MacBook Pro crashes a lot more often.
I've found several other posts about this problem. Is there just some fundamental issue with these MacBook Pros? Is Apple aware of it? Will they be able to fix it with an OS update or a firmware update? How long will I have to wait for that?

  • Imac takes 10 min to boot. (most of the times it dosnt even boot!!!)

Yesterday night my imac took 10 min to boot getting stuck at each phase !! left it for the night and turned it on in the morning to find it booting in less than 30 sec !! after which in the afternoon it took 10 min again nd then failed to even boot ,getting stuck either at the apple logo or at the blue screen.
So i tried disk utility from the installation disk nd it said it had an incorrect count of blocks for a file.
repaired it nd it still didnt work. so i tried safe boot which leads to the same prb( stuck at blue screen). nd then verbose boot, it said Disk0s2 I/O error gose on but still dosnt boot. tried disk utility again nd this time it had an incorrect block count error for another file . i shut it down nd left it for an hour after which it booted in 2 min.
Am now backing up all my data.
Kindly help in solving this issue.
P.S have windows installed on bootcamp which is working perfectly. have run the hardware test which says everything is fine and the S.M.A.R.T status is also fine.

  • Mac Pro suddenly takes very long to boot and won't shut down... just spins

My Mac started taking very long to boot up... maybe 10 minutes before the icon bar becomes available.
Also, it won't shut down... it just spins. I've waited 30 minutes with no results.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

    CBuss,
The long boot cycle points to preference corruption. And not the kind that can be corrected with re-boots etc., Check Hard Drive>Library>Preferences to see if the listings make "visual" sense. If there are a lot of letters with circles over them and numbers interspersed, you are skating out on thin ice.
Back up everything now, then do a clean install of your current OS. Do not to an "archive". That will probably archive the corruption as well. Go up to Snow Leopard if you can. Add your data back manually as well. If you keep going with these lingering start ups, you will shortly get the "?" at startup instead of the Apple/ Chime and the long, expensive, recovery (by somebody else) will begin.
As for the 'shut down" issue.. I am still in the dark. Something is still "running" and canceling the shut down cycle.
    Cheers
    Toby

  • Booting my iMac takes much longer when Behringer FCA 202 is attached....

    Hi,
just curious if anyone has a clue for this one: my iMac boots within half a minute, when my Behringer FCA 202 firewire audio interface is NOT connected.
When I connenct it, booting takes more than a minute.
When I boot in verbose mode, it says (amongst others):
kextd[31]: kextdwatchvolumes: couldn't set up diskarb sessions
kextd[31]: diskarb isn't ready yet: we'll try again soon
My theory is that the iMac thinks ithe FCA 202 is a firewire disk instead of an audio interface, and therefore tries to connect to this "drive".
By the way, the FCA 202 works fine
Is there a way to make the computer boot faster???
    Thanks!
    Regards,
    Jaap

Then I suggest you contact the people who make the audio device and tell them. Your theory about thr firewire disk maybe true, however if it is taking a long time to boot up, I 'expect' from experience of hardware devices, that the OS does indeed detect the device and is simply waiting for a response that it never gets.
Usually in this case the OS (or the driver that is trying to query the device) simply 'times out' and then continues on - so it is as if an expected response is not forthcoming.
You should be able to see this quite easily for instance if when you boot up hold down ctrl-v (this turns off the normal mac boot up screen and shows you 'under the hood') if the device is hanging at boot then you should see the messages stop scrolling while the device is detected.
This information, if you are interested, will be held in your logs on your mac.
Simply 'hoping' the bug gets fixed (if that is indeed what it is) won't get it fixed if no one reports it.
